I'm just old enough to remember hearing it on St. Louis's CBS TV affiliate. Of course, since St. Louis has a very well known CBS radio affiliate, the tone isn't lost on much of anyone.
I remember it well. Today I'm 48 and find myself in instant tears the moment I hear it. Good for CBS continuing to use it for radio; that's where it was born. Above all other networks CBS maintains the strongest relationship to her radio roots, and I for one REALLY appreciate that.
A bus was hijacked. These days, they'd cover that non-stop until it was over and have 40 experts on to tell us various possible outcomes, what caused it, and why the hijacker isn't really bad, just misunderstood. I miss the days when news was news and it was kept in its own time slot.
My friend was a Vietnamese refugee who was stuck in a squalid camp just outside Hong Kong for 3 years in the 70s. He waited patiently to be processed/vetted and then came to the US and is now a gastroenterologist in Seattle. He is furious about the situation at the southern border today and has NO sympathy for anyone who crosses illegally without proper processing. If he had to wait, why shouldn't they wait
The entire CBS Monday Night schedule was preempted and included these shows. The Jeffersons Shields & Yarnell Maude All's Fair The Sonny and Cher Show They were preempted for Our Happiest Birthday: A Bicentennial Retrospective (A CBS News Special) and They Said It With Music: From Yankee Doodle to Ragtime
That Burger Chef commercial also featured Patsy Garrett (a.k.a. the Cat Chow lady). I remember that there used to be a Burger Chef in Charleston (WV). Now it's a Hardee's restaurant.
There was also a Burger Chef in South Charleston and St. Albans WV. The St. Albans location became a Hardee's while the the South Charleston location became a Godfather's Pizza. Both locations are something entirely different now. St. Albans location is a Corvette sales lot and South Charleston sells truck toppers.
Rooney's CBS "essay" was originally intended to be "Goofing Off In America"; but when Andy discovered that virtually all of the people he interviewed actually worked hard at their jobs, and were proud of them, he changed the focus [and title] to "Mr. Rooney Goes To Work".
This does bring back memories of watching TV as a kid. I love old news clips. I do think that TV has gotten better. MUCH better...does anyone really want to see that 'special' they teased? ;-) Network news, however, has suffered greatly since then. It's very sad.
If you have the original series "Hawaii Five-0" soundtrack album, you'll recognize the CBS Special "jingle" at the end here as a piece of a song therein. I always got a kick out of that when I played the album!
@Superbook4Eva The only real connection is that the founders of Burger Chef were a couplea guys who who hired to create a flame broiling machine for Burger King. After they built the machine they decided to use it for themselves and open their own burger place, and Burger Chef was born. The company was eventually was sold to the Hardee's chain, who still bring back the Super Chef sandwich every year or so.
WOW! I thought that was Cromwell in that ad...then thought, nah...couldn't be him. Poster: thanks for sharing this. How do you know for a fact it was Cromwell?
Two questions: 1) When did CBS stop using that 'Special Presentation' graphic? If I remember correctly, it was being used as late as 1984 to 1986 - I have memories of seeing it used before the annual airing of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" on WJBK-TV in Detroit. 2) What is the Burger Chef/Burger King connection? I thought I read somewhere that BK bought out Burger Chef.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not that I'm terribly upset that Maude got bumped, but this "special" looks like a turd. And as the saying goes, you can't polish a turd.
Jason Robards was in this garbage right at the time he had won one Oscar (All the President's Men) & would win another (Julia) the following year too...

We're news'd out now. Local news is at least 1/3 of every station schedule, indicating to me that they no longer have prohramming imagination.
OMG Burger Chef -there was one on Rt 73 southbound right before the Marlton NJ Circle near where the Kohl's is today.

Wow... great attention to detail by whomever loaded the Maude slide and didn't level it. ;)
The lady in the Burger Chef ad is the actress who played the housekeeper in the movie "Benji."
The CBS reference is in unlit blue here. Also seen it in unlit green. Of course, with the fuse animation, it's lit in orange-red.
CBS Newsbreak old school television
Oh, no! They missed Maude that night! I don't know how life went on.
Damnit, now I'm pissed here in 2023 because I remember missing Sonny and Cher that night in 1977.
Andy Rooney reports: Americans love to work!
Boy how times have changed!

SCTV Season 4 Godfather parody brought me here; wanted to see Morton Dean.
I loved Rose Milk lotion! 😍

This news break? It's from a commercial break during a July 4 1977 television special.
