    I am a 79 year old retired carpenter and I am sooo jealous of you all. When I was in my 20s I gutted an old farmhouse for the company I was working for. Watching your videos bring back the memories of doing the demolition and the hard work that was involved. Sadly I was not involved in the rebuild but through your videos I will get to experience the transformation of your grandpa’s old mansion. I went on to build many homes throughout my career and was the foreman on many and built many kitchens as well. My last project was building out a van to enjoy my retirement years in. This will surely be my last major project but after all these years I have finally built something for myself and my wife to enjoy and live in for a few years. I look forward to each episode and enjoy the anticipation of what will be next. I love the banter back and forth between you guys as you compete your daily chores. I was always able to get the work done and have fun at the same time like you guys do. Love the way you pay attention to detail like you do. That house will surely stand another hundred years and most likely more. Keep up the great work. Ron C.

      Ron, my husband is a retired builder too. He started out in upstate New York but couldn't work enough there due to weather, so he moved to Texas and worked on a building crew finally starting his own business as a renovation carpenter with his own crew. After many years at that at the end of his career went to work for Home Depot and was popular with the customers because of his knowledge. The last major thing he built was our retirement home finished in 2014. Now he helps the kids with their homes and helps friends now and then. We traveled 2016, 17, and 18 with our 5th wheel RV and in 19 we went to a rally with Adventure Caravans in Albuquerque at the balloon fest. Definitely a must see! In 2021 we again went with Adventure Caravans to Sevierville TN for Christmas in the Smokies. Stayed home since but he still has building projects off and on. Hope you enjoy your travels with your wife, we loved traveling!

    I'm 77 y.o. & I'm finding it fascinating to watch the videos of the rebuild. Roman is really good at explaining the different steps, why it's being done, and how it's being done. Ive realized it much more difficult to rebuild a very old home than to build a complete new one. I'll keep watching & I'm hoping for any memories of the old house.

    I am just drooling over all the still usable pull out lumber. I am a 78 year old woman who built my 1520 square foot home for my husband and four daughters from others pull outs. Kept us debt free while homeschooling and gardening while my husband worked a job. God guided and provided every step of the way. Reliving those memories through your videos.

    Justin and Roman are great at demo-ing and rebuilding and explaining how to 'build better'. Its pretty interesting how our 'forefathers' built homes in the 'early days', with the subfloor being built with diagonal planks of wood. Lots of points of interest..... ;) Surprised the 'old' electrical box was still in use, should have been disconnected and its out of code, haven't seen one of those in a LONG time. 👍

      Remember, when this house was built plywood hasn’t been invented yet!! It wasn’t invented til Dec 26, 1865 in New York City, so probably wasnt available in Iowa til the early 1880’s. Until then, planks diagonally placed, was how houses were built. I think it also prevented racking in high winds.

    I really loved learning about the “knotty” part of compression & tension.
    It made complete sense and when your not a contractor who knows what their doing with simple science well then I guess you don’t want them building your house 😊
    If I have ever have a house built I am going to ask all the crew if they can pass that test 😊❤

    • @jamesrobinson1022

      There is codes on what can be done to structural lumber such as drilling or notching. Typically a hole can't be more than more than 1/3 the height of board, most within the middle 1/3 of the height, has to be so far from the ends and certain amount for spacing. It can vary depending on what the code is for that area and what the manufacturer of the lumber recommends.

    • @greghamann2099
      @greghamann2099 3 місяці тому

      A really good contractor would not use that board at all. The knots make it too weak to use. It should have stayed at the lumber yard. That board did not pass grade. They might have failed my test. Contractors are not to be trusted. They love to cut corners that you will never find out about. It all gets covered up in the end. Look at all the things the original builders got away with.

    • @roncurtis8331
      @roncurtis8331 3 місяці тому +1

      @@greghamann2099 there are plenty of places to use that board in the house that’s not structural. I would cut it up and use it in shorter pieces and cut out the knot. Waste not want not--

    My dad was from the Jamestown NY area, most of his family still lives there. Many years ago the county was accepting bids for the demolition of an old schoolhouse. The husband to one of his cousins submitted a bid to demo, he asked for the lumber and any other materials he could salvage. He built a 2 car garage out of the lumber and used the hardwood flooring for their basement floor. A definite win-win for him and the county.

    In the uk we install blocking or dwangs/ noggins so every sheet edge has bearing on a solid grounds. Also stops the joists twisting and makes for a much more solid floor. Creaky or squeaky floors can also be caused by wood rubbing together. Im surprised you skipped this step as you keep going on about it,,

    Living in Small Town South Dakota, my house is Deeded 1889 ? (Yes Question mark) I absolutely love my Squeaky floor. Squeaky floors are also a tattle tale. (You’ll understand when your children are older)

      Will you be writing anything special on lumber or include a house prayer within the walls as you build. I know a house blessing was suggested; I hope that will happen. Gratitude for safety of all who helped renovate, is appropriate. I loved hearing Romans sweet comment🙏

    The last video introduced Justin's son, as an apprentice carpenter. The pride in introducing him to all of us was visible. Enjoy the time together, and hope you two get to collaborate more as the years go by.😊❤ Roman is wonderful at explaining everything, and Cole is a great student...a position that is not familiar. When all of your children are older, you can tell them about how you and your friends fixed up their home. ❤

    Some notes about “new builds”
    If you put insulation on the interior walls, it dampens bedrooms and bathroom sounds.
    If you put the sink under the window (like before) you’ll have something nice to look at. A huge regret I see is not leaving the island free of a cook top or sink. Keeping the island for prep, and hosting is the way to go; no dirty dishes or hot pots next to party food.
    Open kitchen / open concept means cook smells go throughout the house (aka into the fabrics) something to remember. It also is means cooling and heating is a bigger task but I know you have a plan for that ◡̈
    Lastly, remember you’re going to grow old and fraile in this house, build it now for your 80yr old self. Doing stuff like a guest room on the main floor, laundry on the main floor, slide out cabinet draws, so you don’t have to get on your knees to look in the back of the cabinets, stuff like that 😊 ask your dad what he wish he had in his house, that could tell you a lot ❤

    Amazing work you are all doing. We did a similar refurbishment ( incl roof off and 11 steels)
    Dont underestimate the amount of sockets you need. With all of your design draw up every room and cut things out like water, sinks, loos so you can play about. Then make lists of what you need last but not least take loads of pictures when you do first fix. It will save you in the long run as you can find out where electricity runs when you want to drill in your wall to hang a picture…😅

    While you are doing all this plan for some sort of a tech closet. Basement area will be fine. Run either cat5 or cat6 cable to every room in the house and out to area's where you want cameras. This will allow you to put storage for your youtube material on network storage, have a good camera system with the traffic on the cables vs eating up your Wi-fi bandwidth. It can provide a central spot for Sat TV to enter the house as well as be a central place for amplifiers if you want to do whole house audio.
