  • It's Monday! Yay! It's longform discussion day, tangental tales and an attempt to dissect what the music industry is all about. Today we're talking about how on earth I became famous and made it as rockstar in the fickle world of show business. What was it about my life that cracked the code? Is there a recipe all of us can follow? Tell me what you think after watching this, what was my secret to success? Please get involved in the comment section, we read them and appreciate all your input especially on these longer episodes.
Today features my producer Jenny May Finn once again!

Wow! There's a lot to unpack in this one. My opinion of you Justin has evolved quite considerably over the years. I have gone from hero worship back in the early days of The Darkness fame when I credited you with single handedly resurrecting from the dead the music I loved and making it popular and relevant again, to being disappointed when everything imploded, and most recently watching your UA-cam videos and thinking you seemed very down to earth and a nice guy.
This one surprised me though, and I found it interesting that you disagreed with Jenny's synopsis of certain situations that I felt she had hit the nail right on the head.
The most interesting aspect for me was the discussions around the on stage vs off stage persona and at times it felt very reminiscent of what I experienced with my (late) ex-husband who was also a professional rock musician as a long term member of a British classic rock band. I particularly related to the part where you showed indignation at the prospect of having to sort things out that might have gone wrong at home when you returned from tour! The nuts and bolts of life seemed to be something that he avoided at all costs and I just picked up that same vibe from that comment!
I do personally think that there's a huge difference between an on stage and off stage persona.
On stage is what you do, it's a performance, not who you are as a person. The best example I can think of is David Bowie and all the personas he created, but at home Iman is quoted as saying he was just David Jones.
You also have a larger than life stage presence, very entertaining and a massive part of the enjoyment of the live show. I totally understand for weeks you will have played the on stage character at shows, in meet and greets, with journalists and it must be difficult to switch off, and maybe it's just easier to continue to be that person? Or perhaps it's difficult to differentiate between the two now as you have been in the spotlight for 20 years?
Or potentially you might subconsciously think the off stage persona isn't interesting, fun or entertaining enough? (only a theory) I do find it all very fascinating... Just wanted to share my thoughts.
Oh, and I also wanted to share an anecdote with you from around 2005 or 2006. I flew out to the States to join my husband on tour for a couple of weeks. The previous occupants of the tour bus they were on had been The Darkness! Knowing I was a fan, my husband asked the tour bus driver out of curiousity which bunk had been yours. His answer was "None of them. He didn't sleep! 😂

Ohhh Helen, I'll bet you've got some VERY entertaining stories to share of your doubtless countless experiences in the rollicking world of rock! (And you must be a looker, rock dudes always have the hottest ladies--well, except John Lennon).
Here's hoping when you said 'late' you were referring to your marital status & not the passing of your man. If not you have my condolences.

This is one of the only long format shows of which I watch every second. This IS balance. The Yin & Yang. I'm also a complete unknown music writer who only writes music as weekly therapy for dealing with the mad world. 23 years of warning about NOW and still going strong. :) I LOVE you 2 together. B4 this show I had no idea about your band but now I absolutely love it. What an odd 20+ year trajectory your music took to finally get to my ears.

Justin is one of those “Brilliant” people. I hope he recognizes it. Seriously! I Love the 2nd intro as well lol. Justin’s breathy vocal sounded so beautiful🥰 I see Justin as very confident onstage and rightly so!I can tell that he absolutely loves it! Of course he’s going to feel and act different onstage as opposed to just sitting around chatting or when living every other mundane piece of daily life. I think it’s a feeling, combined with great talent. His voice is Amazing and so beautiful!! Annnnd, that stance with the microphone that Jenny May demonstrated Justin...keep doing it!!💓💓💓👍🏻

Oh and to put what you guys were talking about - how to be in life as a musician successful or otherwise - into one word - humble. Yes be as extroverted or introverted, crazy, zany, rambunctious as you want to be, but always have some humility, THAT is the key in my opinion and it is something I think is lacking with a LOT of people these days.

Great video Justin, I must admit I was never a fan of the Darkness in that Ive never bought an album or seen you live but I have always respected what you did and the way you did it, Jools Holland springs to mind and think your a thoroughly nice nice chap from one of the most beautiful parts of the country, I myself am from Norfolk. Personally I would be interested to hear about the Rock and Roll excesses and adventures you got up to, your craziest stories about LA and the mean streets of Lowestoft, I know its a very base question, but I do love a tale of Rock 'N' Roll debauchery. All the best Respect. Ben.

💯% agree with Justin’s philosophy of “burning bright instead of burning out.” I think that music fans show up for the so called self destructive behavior that drives musicians to achieve their goals. Could you do maybe a series of interviews of children of famous artists? For example, Rufus, are there any pressure or expectations whilst living under the shadow of his famous dad.
Maybe try & get interviews from other children of famous artists such as, Duncan Jones (Bowie’s son), maybe one of the McCartney children, or even Julian Lennon. You could ask him about THAT scene in Yesterday & how he felt about the scene.

To comment on today's video, specifically in regards of the on stage and off stage persona, I think, to a certain extend, we all "act" a part accordingly to the social circumstances we're in. When I was teaching in college I had to put on an assertive and confident facade which is a total far cry from the "real" me, but it's what we all need to do, I suppose, "wear the mask" those in front of us expect us to wear right there and then. It took its toll, I couldn't go on like that and I left after 10 years.
On a completely different topic, just for a laugh, I'd really like to point out this Italian band called Nanowar of steel and perhaps seeing your reaction, their oeuvre is already loads of fun, your commentary would make it gold! I don't know if it's allowed to post links on here, so I do apologise if it's not, but here you go: ua-cam.com/video/pJCxcdWqdto/v-deo.html

❤ Wow you made my day with the announcement to interview to your brother Dan the next week!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
    About today's episode:
    1. Authenticity: I think it's very important when an artist do something what he or she really believes in, because there are a lot of people doing things only because is a trend. And the result is shit. The difference between persona and person is maybe a cultural thing...the way a rock star must behaves and all that stuff... I don't care too much personally.
    2. Your voice: I can't believe that you feel this way about your voice. You sing great!!! I love to listen you singing or talking. You maybe feel more like a guitar player, but yiu are a wonderful singer, like an Axl Rose but with a better voice!
    3. Jenny May Finn, you looked very pretty with your rouge lips!
    4. My classic: Justin in white with the free chest ❤️‍🔥and Justin in hawaiian shirt 🫶

About number 2. Yes! I have to respectfully disagree with Justin here, too, and side with you. That VOICE... He's on my top five list, of over 40 years of listening to singers I like. (Axl Rose is not on it 🙂 though I like (liked) him.) Just my subjective honest opinion.

Played my first gig at 39… ‘cos 40 was looming… played guitar off an on since age 14, not very accomplished, knew I could get away with singing a bit due to pissed up pub karaoke. Auditioned, got gig as lead singer. Few years later started a side project that had me playing rhythm guitar and lead vocals. I’m painfully shy with anxiety… but once I get on stage, or have an audience, something takes over and I lap it up. Never really wanted to ‘make it’ but would have loved the opportunity perhaps. I reckon the excess would have been an issue and probably would have finished me off. Still, the chance to live it would have been good. Currently creating an acoustic set as I want to do solo performances, another ‘side project’ however this is the first time I kinda feel scared and anxious about doing it… but do it I will as I know I’ll love it. I wish I could carry off an alter-ego though.

The Last Dinner Party just got picked up by Hozier to open his European shows. They’re a band that’s focused on playing gigs for the last 18-24 months and building a “buzz” around that. It seems to be working. They’re brilliant!

Each path is different to “making it” Definitely should know your craft. Know your purpose and take advantage of opportunities presented. The best musicians I know people chase them. Most people won’t achieve fame. Also people that just want to to be famous are pretentious and probably don’t have the ambition or creativity to stay relevant. Just be you ride the wave and manifest your dreams.

I remember going upstairs at Morlings way back to get some strings and Mr Morling himself was there. He served me and remarked, Justin Hawkins was in, youve just missed him. I asked what he was like, to simply be told with a smile "he is like every customer....extremely valued". Nice exchange.
The shop is long gone, but as a town, we go.

Paused this, as Justin said his voice doesn’t move him - went for a walk and listened to his cover of This Town Ain’t Big Enough, and I swear the rock vocal performance to end all rock vocal performances made me feel like a Viking! What a record that is!

New topic for discussion - the importance of Artwork in establishing a band/artist. Part of the reason I'm interested is that we happen to share an album artist - Mark Wilkinson who did your cover for "One Way Ticket to Hell...and Back" was also commissioned by me to do the artwork for my album "The Light Broke In". He's such an amazing artist and a truly lovely guy, and the reason I wanted him involved was that I'd met him at a Fish (ex Marillion) convention, as his early work with Marillion was a major route in to album artwork with more to it than just a picture of the artist. I wondered how important you believe artwork is to the journey of the band/artist and whether good artwork can make or break an album.

I went to music school (Berklee), and I absolutely ended up hating music, guitar, and everyone around me. Wanting to practice and HAVING to practice are two different things. I loved to practice for hours. I hated having to practice in order to be in the “right groups”.
Welcome to my Philosophy Degree. Lol
I still practice four hours a day, but read 300 pages a night. Best of both.

This session has put the "air back in my soufle'"
Is that how you spell it?
    Great chat.
Justin on the deathsticks a bit of a worry though.
Anyway gotta say so glad Justin got out from the keyboards, grabbed the guitar and headed out to the front to play and sing.
Seriously one of the best frontmen I have ever had the joy to see perform live with the guys who are so bloody good too.
    Such great fun rockn stuff.
On another point discussed not sure if artists realise how lucky they are to be able to have their songs and videos instantly broadcast worldwide for free at the click of a few buttons.
    Not back in my day.
Only someone like Michael Jackson could do something close to that and at a great expense to the record company whatever.
Oh and have a digtal multitrack recorder in the form of a laptop computer in their bedroom.
    I mean Wow.

I don't have curiosity about other people either. Justin you've had a positive influence on people and their lives. You bring joy. I'd shake your hand. In my case, my son loves the darkness too. He was thrilled when you talked to him from the stage in Orlando last year. Telling someone to F off now and then is normal. I appreciate that. I think you're totally approachable.
