I spent a week hanging out with the Clingers in 1967 when I worked at the warwick musical theater in RI. and they were with Robert Goulet. Great girls , full of energy.
Anybody who follows the career of Debby Clinger should check out the two albums she made with The Rock Flowers in the early 1970s. She sang with Ardie Tillmand and Jacquie Wiseman. Great songs, including some written by the legendary Ellie Greenwich.
Cool doc, I love finding out about bands like this. I would argue that they weren't the first all-female rock group because the Pleasure Seekers were kicking ass before them, but people can argue all day about these things. The Manson stories were creepy, glad they made it out!
I went on a deep dive about Debra Clinger last week because of Krofft Super Show and her work with the last great bubblegum band, Kaptain Kool and the Kongs. I had no memory of The Clingers as a group but I have been blown away. After discovering Fanny last year and now the Clingers the history of pop/rock music needs to be seriously updated to include these pioneers and all the other “girl bands” not given a real shot.
Same. I used to watch the Krofft Super Show as a kid and I remember Debra on Kaptain Kool and the Kongs, but I never heard of The Clingers before until just recently when Michael Lembeck mentioned it in an interview, which is amazing because they seemed so popular at one time. You would think I would've seen them in my old issues of 16 magazine or Tiger Beat.
How the heck did I miss these girls? I was in love with the Osmond Brothers back when they were little and I got to stay up late to watch them at the very end of the Andy Williams Show every week.
I was a background singer with Curt Boettcher, who produced The Clingers. I remember when they appeared. Melody married Jim Bell, who was a musician and singer with Curt’s company called Our Productions. Jim and I sang the same parts, and I lost contact with him when he got married. Does anyone know where he is now?
Last I heard Jim and Melody got divorced. I also heard that Melody is in North Hollywood, Ca. But as far as Jim Bell, I couldn't tell you for sure. This is all what I heard, not sure how accurate it is.
The first all girl rock band was The Heartbeats from Lubbock Texas founded in 1966. They won so many battle of the bands beating male groups they got a record deal lol.
okay. there were too many Girl groups to name.. they were NOT the first.. I was in Wild Honey/Fanny and the California Girls in 65 we opened for name acts and toured too.. but then everyone thinks they were first. lol.. I think Goldie and the Gingerbreads was the first.. except for the all girl jazz bands of the 40s
@@abcbatman1966 But the Gingerbreads were already touring since 62 and got signed to Decca in England before Atlantic pickep up their contract. They were on tour in England with Chubby Checker in 1962. Genya goes way back singing with producer Richard Perry's group the Escorts before that.

Love the way Patsy talked about their dad, wonderful to hear things like that.

The Liverbirds were the first all-female Rock band, debuting in September 1963.
Three years before The Clingers switched to playing instruments

I wish they had let Debbie finish her story about the Spahn Ranch
WOW! WOW! WOW! If only the marketing had been more positive towards females in rock and music! The Clingers were very good!
Thank you Clinger Sisters! You were great and your legacy is secure.
56:59 creative genius. Don’t forget creativity in genius.
The Clingers were the best girl rock group and the very first as well!!

Always liked Patsy! Great.
Why didn't Dick Clark let the Clingers play their instruments on American Bandstand?

Sort of travelled the same path as The Osmonds
they sure weren't the the first all girl rock and roll band. Goldie and Gingerbreads hold that claim
The Gingerbreads signed with Atlantic records and The Clingers signed with Vee-Jay records in 1964. Hard to say which technically signed first

How about the Luv'd Ones?
