Great interview, i have watched only two movies by Fukasaku to this date "Street Mobster" and "Sympathy For The Underdog" and was totally blown away, one of the best movies from Japan i have watched, looking forward to watch his other works.
Moving homage by one great to another. The Fukasaku films, of course, are must-sees; artistically superior in my book to Coppola. And speaking of artfulness, it's gratifying to see Friedkin back on form again with Bug and Killer Joe.
I love Friedkin and adore Fukasaku but everything Friedkin is saying is a cliché. I'd argue that saying that Fukasaku's films are very original its an oversimplification. From a literary, screenwriting perspective they're very similar stories, specifically when looking at his crime films. To such an extent that the movies have similar plots, and sometimes similar scenes (like the cutting of the little finger in both Street Mobster and BWHAH) I think the nuances of the characters, the story and his visionary directing style are what's original in his films. The fact that a movie could end like Graveyard of Honor, that's what I find original anyways
Well, I have not seen much of Fukusaku’s work, but I’m pretty sure Friedkin is fairly clear in the originality lies in the style and voice of the films, not in the specifics of plot and character.
One of my favorite directors talking about another of my favorites. What a wonderful speaker Friedkin was. RIP Legend.
Friedkin is a legend in his own right (French connection, to live and die in la, the exorcist, killer joe) and gives a good interview here
Fredkins is great to listen to, this was especially great as I'm a huge fan on Fukasaku

Definitely one of the very bests.
Dear Sarke2, I don't know if you went to see more of his movies, but I can't suggest you enough The Battles Witouth Honor and Humanity films serie.
billy on one of the greatest

Definitely superior to Coppola. Fukasaku's the Hitchcock of the gangster genre. Not just of Japanese cinema, in general.
great tribute
RIP
donald trump
why does he sound exactly like him!?!
Gangster films. Better than Godfather, Goodfellas or Casino….

I think that's pretty much what he said here.
