My biggest thing when I was with my grandad in his wheelchair was making sure people spoke to HIM. People would constantly ask me or family members questions on his behalf, like even “does he want a drink?” and I’d just have to be like “he is able to speak, he just doesn’t have legs” and I was only 5 at the time 😂 it really bothered me that someone would speak to someone I cared about like that, so I really make a point of reminding people that wheelchair users can have the ability to speak for themselves in a lot of circumstances.
You saying about not fitting in really hit me, it reminded me of my grandad and now he used to feel, I hate that it’s still the same almost 20 years later.

Awww. I remember my gran in her care home. She had perfect hearing, and was totally with it (she had parkinson's) but it really used to bug me how the staff would speak to her, like she was stupid. x

I have a SmartDrive MX2 which is an older model. I absolutely love it, and I depend on it to go everywhere. You can use it indoors and outdoors, but it doesn't work well off-road, and trying to do that will drain your battery. The battery lasts 12.3 mi on a flat no resistance surface according to Permobil's website. Mine lasts a full 8+ hour day travelling all over my university campus (including some steep hills), but I make sure to turn it off when I'm not using it. It does have some Bluetooth connectivity issues, especially with newer models. Mine doesn't work well in Walmart, and I assume Bluetooth is the issue. I've heard other people say that it doesn't work well in crowded cities like New York. I've had no problems in Atlanta though (a relatively large city). I prefer my SmartDrive over an electric handcycle attachment b/c I can leave it on my chair all day and go indoors, fit under tables, and go up to counters without having a giant trike attachment in front of my chair. If you plan to only use the power assist outside for walks, then an electric handcycle would work fine. I have a friend who has one, and she loves walking her dog with it (except the dog is running because she goes fast in her chair)!

Oh, so this is how it feels. And thats what it must feel like for the non disabled when they meet new crowds. Know what I mean??? I dont know if that makes sens. How are you? I have a smart drive and it’s awesome! While yes it’s more for taking walks or going in shops and such, but for me that’s all I need as I can’t go on bad terrains anyways (sensitive to vibration) and going out biking with anyone doesn’t happen either, I take walks with mum and maybe family friends so I only need a help engine fit for walks, and something which is very easy to carry up a flight of stairs and lift into the car and so on. The Smart Drive is super light and very portable and it doesn’t get in the way when going in shops and such. I’ve had my Smart Drive for a month now and I’m loving it! Though obviously not using it as much as I would have under normal circumstances as I’m obviously not going out of town for leisure trips to shops and such that I would have done if we didn’t have the C19 situation going on right now so I’m only going out on walks sometimes and doing grocery shopping

Great topic. I am hoping my brand new wheelie arrives next week. It also is a Motion Composites, the Apex. Loved it at the store, and after all the measurements blah blah we ordered. And of course fashion conscious moi needed the bells and whistles:) Ordered the Spinergy LX wheels with red spokes. The trim of the wheelie is all black.
Gem, I too am seriously thinking of a handbike or whatever they are officially called. Seems the name changes depending on vendor/website. But the Batec seems the granddaddy of them all. Which for me, here in The US are not approved by one of our federal agencies known as the FDA. I have however come across where I can buy here. I think one would be ideal for trails and parking the car somewhere and going a couple of miles and back again. Super sexy. I only worry about maintenance/repair.

I don’t have the finances to buy one just now and my therapist and I are in a good natured battle of wills as to if my next chair is manual (what I want) or powered (what she thinks is probably best). Given me being on the shielded list is curtailing me trying to keep myself moving both out of and in the chair and the nature of my condition means that what ever mobility I loose will be gone forever I am thinking my therapist is likely to come out the victorious but I am stubborn and that pigheaded nature has kept me going longer under my own power for longer than medics predicted so I’m doing all I can to make my dream lightweight active chair a reality!
