Watching this video made me truly realize what this Island means for me and the fandom. Although we love to imagine that they would have just kept on chugging and doing their own thing from British Railways, it's very possible that this is what would have happened. Although I'm one of those people that thinks that everything would have been alright in the end, The thought of this alternate universe is genuinely chilling. This would have been the final hurrah for British Railways steam if you look at the date, and to think of the heart and love that went into the series and everything that it represents, it just makes it all the sadder. Still, in a way, there is something oddly poetic about this. It expresses the depth of feeling that all those felt when they watched the real end of BR steam in 1968. It helps to capture what we love about the steam engine and railways. This video made me treasure this little blue train and his little blue train universe just a little bit more, and for that I thank you. I hope that we as a fandom can continue to make stories like these to show why we love this world so much.

after the line shut down and the line that connected them to the rest of the mainline Thomas, Percy, Toby, Glynn, mavis, and the couches were placed in the very end of the line. Thomas was always silent, but the others still had hope, but that night as the engines and couches slept, Thomas awoke to a dark void but rails he was on. suddenly an engine he remembered and loved dearly buffered up to him smiling and she said don't worry ill bring your friends with after I bring you back to your new home. a few nights later Glynn awoke to a whistle he remembered all too well, when the doors swung open and the other awoken and they all saw Glynn smile for the first time there in front of them was lady, Burdett, patch, Lilly, junior, Mr. C, and Stacy wearing firemen and drivers wear. they got the four steam engines two diesels and four couches and luggage van hooked in a straight line. they steamed up Thomas and Percy to help lady. the set for the very end of the line where the town was now abandoned due to the line shutting down. as the branch line engines saw the towns and old sights, they came to the very end of the line but before they went through the buffers a little boy was sitting on the buffers. once they came to a halt, they found out his family abandoned him because he was autistic and was slow to learning stuff. they took him into an embracive hug, and they helped him into lady's cab, and they all started down the line and through the buffers and on the magic rails. once they all entered the engines gained the ability to move on their own. after they uncoupled, they saw Thomas, Donald, Mathew, Clive, hank, James, Derek, Dennis, and Norman were in a shed looking at them. they all moved down the line and joined them. back in the sheds at Farquhar the new controller went to talk to the engines about them going to new museums and heritage railways. but saw Thomas's dead body and he sold him to the national railway museum and then saw the picture on the shed wall that said the magical engines of sodors popularity. he then realizes he screwed up big time.
I'd say a story like this would have been better ending for the Reverend Awdry's stories. But the line became an industrial line thanks to the Ffarquhar Quarry Co, and a tourist line
This is actually very heartbreaking. There should be more AUs out there like this video. As one other person commenting on this video said, despite our imagination that Sodor would avoid any merging into British Rail, the events depicted in this video perhaps would’ve happened in reality. But fortunately for us, there are events after this that we can assume involving Thomas, Percy and Toby getting saved, so for us who believe that, it’s all good.
After Thomas, Toby and Percy got put into storage their coaches were turned into an outhouse and two chicken coupes. Thomas who was the most heartbroken cried to himself wishing for one last miracle to have his surviving friends spared and him taken instead. as they fell into a deep sleep for a few years the shed fell apart and like Glynn they were moved around the island to random old sidings out of the way. toby was rescued by the earl of sodor. Percy was bought by the GWR, but Thomas was still lost only his driver know old and couldn't make the way to his location anymore finally came to see him one last time, but Thomas had grown rusty and broken which made him very sick some kids came with his driver but all they saw was an old engine dying in front of them. his driver walked up to him and said it's ok Thomas old boy i will join you soon, you can rest now. the kids were using tape recorders and the filmed what happens when an engine dies. Thomas's face turned to dust and the wind carried it away. the kids gave the footage to the news and the United Kingdom was outraged even the queen had all those responsible for the downfall of sodor put to death for the heartless behaver and all sodor engines remaining to be saved from the torch and restored back to steam and the diesels already on sodor from the stories spared as well. the fire engines to arrive back were James, Murdoch, and molly and the memorial of those lost to time and the torch was held after a few days the kids who found henry told the search and rescue where he was, and he was soon restored as well. flying Scott's man returned but with another sodor engine named Emily who was able to escape to his line. but Hiro was going to stay in Japan because he was happy to be reunited with old friends. and hank, Rosie, porter, conner, and Caitlyn all went back to America and live at a museum. bash, dash, and Ferdinand went back to misty island and brought some of the sodor engines as well like Arthur, Nevil, and Oliver and toad. they returned as well but still worked on the misty island railway for they ground happy with the island peacefulness. in time the NWR's reputation was restored, and new steam engines were brought in but the magic that was stood over the island was still forever altered. but Thomas was on the magic railway were dead locomotives and rolling stock go and he was reunited with Gordon, Edward, the Scottish twins, and Derek who died in an attempt to give him a refitted motor. they were still happy to see each other but they still missed their friends, but they were happy, nonetheless. (Finish my story please)
"Nwr numbers 1, 6, and 7 'thomas allen', 'Percy Macdonald', and 'Tobias' were abandoned in 1967. Thomas allen at Knapford harbor, percy at Elsbridge, and toby at Ffarquhar. They would be preserved between 1970-1974"
Now here’s an idea for a movie or multi-part series: It’s 1969, a year has passed since Steam was abolished on the Mainland. But Dr Beeching finds out that the NWR on Sodor still has steam engines in service, much to his fury. Wanting to make his Beeching Axe plan successful, he does the unthinkable and invades Sodor, threatening to scrap every steam engine on the island. Thomas and his friends must fight to save their home! Can they stop the NWR suffering a similar fate to British Railways? Find in this great adventure!
This is a genuinely heartbreaking piece. Love the effective use of Magic Railroad OST here too. In fairness though, what did Thomas do if not the exact same thing to the Coffeepots first? :P
Sorta but the coffee pots were kept on for a while after Thomas came to the branch. It could be argued that the last was Retired in 1951 when Toby came to run the tramway.
No more vicarstown and knapford, We now have newer staions, Knapford rebuilt and moved, Vicarstown changed too but the same spot, Elsbridge was built over old knapford, Since then Thomas, Toby and Percy missed there branchline until the work was done.
‘Then, hard times came. The quarry shut down, and the line was closed. NWR No.1 takes a final train, nobody wanted the engines; they thought them too old. The Drivers & Firemen greased and oiled No. 1, No. 6, & No. 7 one last time, before covering them with tarps and applying wood preserver on No. 7.’
This is my take and it’s a little happier D199 is on trial and at the same time the last passenger train on Thomas’s line is scheduled While passenger service is no longer active The stone trains and tourist trains we’re still running D199 was soon sent packing after accidentally going on the peel godred line and fell into the marsh None of the main characters are scrapped
I got some head-canon about this. It's painful for my Thomas sensitive self to type this, but here goes. Thomas: begins to cry so hard he sobs over his branchline closing, big tears falling from his eyes. If you consider JBS canon, engines can sob. Percy and Toby well up and weep along with him. Thomas in a choked voice: I loved this branch line so much and now it's gone. Maybe we shall all be scrapped, like my siblings. My iron heart's broken in two. Percy tearfully to Thomas: You've been the best friend I could ever ask for since I came to this island. Thomas in a broken voice: Before you, when I was the only tank engine on the railway, Edward was my best friend. But you being a tank engine like me, I had to befriend you. Toby just as wet as the others: It was what I feared would happen after my old tramway closed, what's happened now. Thomas in a quivering voice: All I've ever done's try to be a Really Useful Engine since I got this line and now it's all over. Well, if it's the end of the line for us, we shall meet up on The Big Railway In The Sky*. All 3 engines just sob and cry as they reminsce about their line until there's no more tears left. I've read some Thomas fanfics in which him being the last of his class comes into play with him crying about the loss of his siblings. If Thomas lost his branchline, I'm sure he'd cry because he loves it so in canon and he's the only to cry twice in one season in the classics. He cries when stuck in the snow and after falling down the mine. * Inpsired by the Railroad/Railway In The Clouds and is in Edward's End Of The Line, one of my Sodor Tales. Read it and weep, if you tear up over fanfics, so tissue/hanky warning if you're that kind of person and don't want to get tears on your computer/phone. I cried inside writing it because poor Thomas is sobbing barely able to speak over his friend Edward's death and I never cry over fanfics, except dry cry. It's like a whimper with no tears.
i feel toby wouldn’t cry, he would say “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” and the three friends would spend their last moments on their beloved branch line
@@jamscotty5707 He canonically cried over his old line closing I believe, regarding Toby. I know the other 2 canonically get teary. In my little scene, Thomas is so sad because of how much he's loved his branch line his friends are infected, so to speak. There's a part of me that just likes to imagine in this AU the Ffarquhar engines spending their last moments on their beloved branch line sadly reminiscing about it all. However, I don't like this AU much because of being Thomas sensitive and how I imagine he'd be sad over the loss of his branch line.
@@jamscotty5707 Toby canonically crying? I guess I imagine the branch line closing, especially with Thomas being so sad over it, reminded him of his old line closing and how sad he was then. Play the video of the song Toby and see his grief over the line closing, as when lyrics about his old line closing are in play, he's seen being sad.
As Thomas came back with the final train, he was visited by Douglas, the last remaining steam engine on the mainline. Douglas recounted the story of Oliver, who he helped escape, to Thomas. Thomas thought about the story, and whispered something to his driver. Later that night at 2:00 AM, Percy and Toby where asleep in the sheds. They are woken up by Thomas, fully in steam and with Annie and Clarabel in toe. Soon after they where woken up, Percy and Toby’s crews came out of Annie and went in there engines. “Percy” said Thomas “You go to the quarry and get Mavis” Then Thomas looked at Toby “Toby, get Henrietta” “Thomas, what are you doing?” Asked Toby “First of all, us” said Thomas “Second of all, we are escaping from scrap”
It is sad to see Thomas and Percy and Toby preserved On sodor while all their friends dead And they will never see them again :( also to see their branch gone
Reality sucks. Oh Doctor Beeching what have you done? Worked for a Transport Minister who was personally invested in the roads to profit that's what. Huge conflict of interest that should never have happened.
@@JTrailroadinboi12 Keep in mind that American freight companies all abandoned passenger service because of their pursuit of the almighty $$$ (and tax breaks) and aside from stubby short lines, there's like... 6 major railroads, now, all of which copy each other's worst ideas as much as possible. CSX, NS, Union Pacific, BNSF, the two Canadian lines (CN and CPRail). I'd argue we're worse off now than we ever have been, and if Amtrak didn't exist there'd be no passenger rail outside of maybe the Chicago area. Even that is a stretch.
Dr. Beeching. If the Railway Series were honest, this is exactly what would have happened to Thomas and his branch line. Just like it happened to countless other branch lines all over the UK at approximately that time.
@@lautanbintangempatlima8350 The fat controller would've probably made arrangements to ensure that all his steam engines found homes on heritage lines or museums way before the thought of scrapping any of them.
Wouldn't the quarry still be open? Passenger services being made redundant due to roads makes sense but good services such as hauling stone would still be lucrative.
They were put in storage. It is unknown whatever happened to Annie, Clarabel, and Henrietta. We can assume they were either scrapped, sold to other railways, or also placed in storage.

Jesus Christ this almost made me cry for the simple fact it’s probably true, it is very sad how you made it
I'd say a story like this would have been better ending for the Reverend Awdry's stories.
Well RIP Daisy then since she arrived shortly before closure.
She’s a Diesel tho so she has a much higher chance of finding work
After Thomas, Toby and Percy got put into storage their coaches were turned into an outhouse and two chicken coupes.
This made me cry but I makes me happy that Thomas, Edward, Gordon, Donald, Douglas, and Derek are in a better place now....
@@MichaelJones-vx7lt maybe it's time I finally finish the story
This is heartbreaking
"Nwr numbers 1, 6, and 7 'thomas allen', 'Percy Macdonald', and 'Tobias' were abandoned in 1967. Thomas allen at Knapford harbor, percy at Elsbridge, and toby at Ffarquhar. They would be preserved between 1970-1974"
Looks like Thomas, Percy and Toby are looking remorseful and Diesel 199 is having a bad day.
I cried watching this.
Hope the branchline crew find a new branchline to work on. Also I have that thomas model
Yeah its the Si3d model
probably wouldn't happen since their withdrawal meant steam was fully abolished on british railways and they would probably be scrapped
Wow didn’t expect to cry today 🥲😭
Now here’s an idea for a movie or multi-part series:
It’s 1969, a year has passed since Steam was abolished on the Mainland.
Wow, this made me feel sad.
This is actually pretty sad...
I'm so sad at this. Thomas was mmy favourite character in the entire thomas series
Eben in All Engines Go
@@Xx_I.S.R.A.E.L_xX Hate to break this to you but all engines go is cringe tbh
Me too, on the favorite. I'm Thomas sensitive, as I call it and that tells me I'm like you.
Is this if the Railway Series wasn’t successful
My heart. Sank
If only bocos relatives were seen taking over in this episode instead of them being on the scrap line at Carlisle kingmoor
This is my take and it’s a little happier
D199 is on trial and at the same time the last passenger train on Thomas’s line is scheduled
While passenger service is no longer active
The stone trains and tourist trains we’re still running
D199 was soon sent packing after accidentally going on the peel godred line and fell into the marsh
None of the main characters are scrapped
@@erical6338 i didn’t think about that
@@jamscotty5707 Toby canonically crying?
Nice
This is probably the closest we will get to a cinematic Thomas movie
And if that happens, I don't want the faces to look creepy. They don’t here but in a picture I’ve seen it looks creepy
It was time for Thomas to leave. He had seen everything.
Reality sucks. Oh Doctor Beeching what have you done? Worked for a Transport Minister who was personally invested in the roads to profit that's what. Huge conflict of interest that should never have happened.
That’s what happens when you have someone who like roads more than rail
And this is why America doesn’t have a one railroad owned by the government
Accept for Amtrak but even that’s not that good.
@@HHopebringer Yeah I guess your right
Why did the branch line have to close?
What's Topham Hatt do this to his engines?
I got so many questions
Dr. Beeching. If the Railway Series were honest, this is exactly what would have happened to Thomas and his branch line. Just like it happened to countless other branch lines all over the UK at approximately that time.
"It was time for Thomas to leave, he had seen everything."
This is a sad day for Thomas branch
Is the branchline closed where would happen to Thomas, Percy, Toby, Daisy & Mavis.
Well scrap like anyother steam engine at the time

Sure why not.
@@MichaelJones-vx7lt would you like to hear how they could do it?
I feel like Thomas Percy and Toby would be preserved as well as the other famous engines but I don’t see a good future for the others
This hurt my soul I hope you realize.
Wouldn't the quarry still be open? Passenger services being made redundant due to roads makes sense but good services such as hauling stone would still be lucrative.
that's probably what's happening. That IS the last passenger train.
Until the quarry switches to just using trucks and lorries.
Which is exactly what happened in Victor Tanzig’s stories of Sodor

Modernisation because it’s clear that all “Steam” engines are withdrawn because of the second video of Henry hiding in his forest and all the other engines on sodor would have probably most likely being scrapped
