I left Chicago in '94, one of my best days ever in L.A. was when The Jesus Lizard came through and played the parking lot of Aron's Records in Hollywood in '96.
Finally this has been uploaded. I haven’t seen this in almost 20 years! My buddy bought a vhs copy from the director then and I haven’t seen it since. I have been on the prowl too. I sent email and asked folks and looked at record stores. So kudos to whomever uploaded it. Looks like Kevin from Triple Fast Action did. Thanks Kevin! TFA was the reason I wanted to see this in the first place. After searching for the Jesus Lizard and having this pop up was like finding Decline Of Western Civilization at the video store when you were a kid!
wow! it only took me 20-years to get a chance to watch it. This was a very good movie and I would have adored it at 17 just as much as I do now....actually, watching this at 17 would have probably given me some much needed perspective on what a music industry is...or was at that time. The highlight for me, obviously the T3FA stuff...but during the Wesley Willis interview, I saw a T3FA poster that I have in my garage, still T3FA stuff. Thank you Kevin!
THANK YOU so much for uploading!!! I've been searching for the VHS for years. I used to run a video store in high school and would put this on every single day for a year just to be around it.
One thing I remember about Chicago's 90s punk scene is the "here today-gone tomorrow" indie labels, for instance, Firebrick records that had a few little bands that never went anywhere.
"Once you see the Jesus Lizard once, you get their schtick. It's one song." Dude, don't take it out on the band because you're too fat for the pit. I've seen the Jesus Lizard 10 times...every time was unique and wonderful.
Has there ever been a more incendiary force of nature live than early 90s Jesus Lizard? I used to joke that Jesus Lizard were the Stooges of the 90s - never as a pejorative, but as a sincere description - but the older I get, the more I realize they were on par with any live band. Ever. David Yow is just about the only person this side of Iggy Pop who can hold the audience in the palm of his hand like that.
"There's only one song" What a douchecannon. The reason why I still listen to The Jesus Lizard more than say than Hammerhead, Tar, Cows, God and Texas, etc. is because they wrote amazing songs. They had far more dynamics than those other bands and each song was different. Duane Dennison was a FAR better guitarist and that was what made them phenomenal. Cows could have been that off the chain if they had a guitarist who could do even 20% of what Duane was capable at the time.
Was watching an analysis of the movie "Nope" and made a comment about it being bizarre that the actress was wearing a Jesus Lizard shirt.. and how i grew up in Chicago in the 90s... and then yootoobe recommended this?!? Holy shit, god bless the algorithm!!!
Biggest thing that happened in the Chicago scene in the 90s, which started the year this doc was made, wasn't Smashing Pumpkins. It was Pitchfork Media and the effect they had on all indie music in the 00s.
So many of these Chicago bands of this era have such strident, upper mids in their guitars with very liyyle low end. It’s the exact opposite tonally of doom. ..not a criticism, the make it work.
Not much to watch after the Jesus Lizard and the Wax Trax sections. The rest of the bands are pretty dull. I scrubbed ahead once I realized the bands were boring. I did watch Wesley Willis though. (How can you talk about Wax Trax and not mention Strike Under?)
I remember seeing the poster. It had Chris Holmes on it. He's as well known 20+ years later as he was then. (*To be fair, this movie's only slightly more pathetic than Decline of Western Civilization Pt. 2. Come to think of it, Chris Holmes was in that, too. But that was the Chris Holmes with a swimming pool. And a mother.)
Guess they got what they wanted - every note perfectly autotuned, chorus soundly in-line with 1980s Big Bird sing-a-long, and wall-to-wall vocals from wannabe Beatles artists who couldnt wash Paul McCartney’s socks. Cheeseburger critic aughtta be real proud of himself. He obviously uplifted people like these bands did. Maybe he’d like to lay his head in Luke Bryans lap?

R.I P Steve Albini. Nice that this doc opens with one of his songs. Big Black made the best unatural guitar sounds.
Absolutely brilliant! It is so important to document those times, the people and the music. Well done to the film maker. Thanks for sharing this
This is an amazing example of how music journalists have far bigger egos than bands sometimes
“Criticism is the expression of an unmet need”
Few things are attention capturing like "The Power of Independent Trucking."
That was a fucking masterful creative choice.
The "Groove" is David William Sims.
Sims is just superb.
the jesus lizard, theres one song? wtf??!!
I always wondered what song he was referring. Probably Puss since it was on a Nirvana LP, but that's not even in my top five
@@words911 Pretty sure it’s Monkey Trick - the song playing when the critic is runnin his mouth
haha that critic was terrible
@@andrisig I had forgotten about how much of a tool DeRogatis was back then. I imagine he is still unreadable now.
I was sad to see Steve Albni leave this world to early. Jesus Lizard for ever and ever

The Veruca Salt clips and interviews are awesome.
Duane hit the nail right on the head with what most people (including myself) think of critics.
Had to come here after the tragic passing of Dave Riley. He will be missed so greatly.
RIP Steve!! Albini is god

More like the audience holds him in the palm of their (collective) hand :-)
I used to describe them the same way, the Stooges of the 90’s.

Who is the dolt that said it’s 1 song? He needs his art spoon fed to him.
Duane Dennison is how guitar should be played. If you had lips and Monkey trick are just wizardry
thanks from NZ, rock on chicago!!
Cool! I saw this in 1997 and I have been looking for this on digital forever. All I have is my crappy VHS copy.
Same here. Saw the showings in Chicago when it was released.
lol the critics in this
great upload!! thanks

6:25. 7:30. now i finally understand how the others got along with david. ALL band members are grumpy freaks 🤣. I love them.🥰

Triplefastaction. Best band ever!
there's not just one song dude
Making me homesick and youth-sick.

What is the name of the Seam track played live?
Two is Enough
Albini is really handsome here
He looks exactly like the typical italian nerd
Amazing!!! 😘🥰😍🤓🥳🤩😊thank u!!!
Huh. Never realized that Tweedy stole his whole thing from The Pulsars.

Jim Derogatory.
Chicago Kick ass!

ALBINI WAS GOD
I've been spit/drueled/fountained on by more CHI bands than any. Including Ohio.
lol @ bill wyman
Bass player from the Stones ?
no doubt about it, Jesus Lizard were the kings of Touch & Go
if that was accident (i doubt it was) when the elephant broke that's awesome.
Duane is such a narcissist. Years later, they have zero influence. Jealous just like Roger Osborne that troll that sings for the Melvins.
😂……no influence? Well you’re a mighty piece of excrement. They’ve influenced a TON of musicians and bands. Go listen to disturbed you abysmal twit.
Wut?
Huh
Dang..
All time fav band. The jesus lizard Not really fond of somes political views but cant take aaay my memories
Of all the bands Albini doesn't like, Veruca Suck gets a pass? Really?! Doesn't like UO but their dreck isn't shat upon?! Signs and wonders...
