Street Fighter II Comparison - SNES VS Mega Drive!

- Опубліковано 21 сер 2024
- Yes, another comparison video of Street Fighter II for Super Nintendo and Mega Drive, but, this video is a bit different from the others.
The game scene is very long, it's the whole game until the end, so... if you want to skip it, go to the 34:10 minute to see the comparison section directly.
SNES!!!
Snes win !
in snes version Elephant's sound work after victory
genesis colo hack 2014?????
no, no , no... to bad video
That's irrelevant, even with patches for color in the Genesis version, the SNES is superior in that section, of that there is no doubt, reason why I decided that there would be no problem to show the game with the patch, because that does not affect the result of the comparison.
Great video!! I remember falling in love with the visuals and sounds of the arcade version back in 91... I was only 8 years old and there was a lone arcade cabinet in the cafe at our local swimming pool with it's demo sound calling out to be played on after my swimming was done...and I have memories of needing to beg my parents for any spare change to try and best the ai or whoever happened to be near the machine....(I almost always lost lol).
A few years later I got to try the SNES version round a friends and even though it was only for a half hour or so, it was a much longer session than I had played the arcade version and I really felt like it was a true copy of the arcade version.
A few more years passed and I managed to get a copy for my megadrive, and as anyone will tell you the (standard out of the box) first thing that stood out was how the audio was scratchy and a little muffled for the audio samples but the gameplay and graphics were excellent (provided you had a six button controller).
I later got to experience the mame version and have to say the original game still holds up quite well considering it's age. It's interesting looking at the subtle differences between the legacy arcade ports on megadrive and SNES (and other systems! Amiga, PC engine etc) versions as they each have a slightly different 'feel' to them from the different hardware work arounds in the porting process.
Obvious SNES is the better version!! 😍
Both versions used the same game mechanics and graphic designs. The graphic and sound quality depends on the system limitations but at the end it isnt a deal breaker because both are pretty decent ports. For me its a fanboy decision, like a song cover. Do you like the SNES or Genesis groove?.
Not true the snes had a completely different game engine the slow down make it easier preferred by some
In SNES Version, Ken, Zangief, Balrog, Vega & Bison Stages, You Hear Cheering In The Background When You Win Or Lose.
That's true, but that's a feature that was added to the SNES. Even the arcade version didn't have that, so it can't be faulted that the Genesis' version didn't.
You've forgotten to mention two details: Ryo's stage: The palace and sky in SFT is on an extra parallax layer behind the wall, in SFCE it's one layer with the wall - and Balrog's stage: The stripper girls wear two different colored bikinis in SFT, the SFCE girls wear the same color. Both details are present in the arcade original too. I like both ports equally, but the SNES port has the best music, it sounds melodic, CPS sounds harsh and metallic, Genesis sounds a little hollow.
personally i prefer the genesis version, but using the color hack was cheap
The Genesis version only has 3 button control. It just can't compete unless you cheat and buy extra hardware
@@robertwilson3866 Except that the 6 button controller became standard with the Genesis. Besides, the SNES could have benefited from a new controller too, because the button layout on its standard controller was pretty awkward for SF2.
@@robertwilson3866 Cheat? LMAO.
@@wwjnz9263 Yes it's cheating to add extra hardware or add chips to cartridges. It's ok on the SNES to add chips to carts because it was designed for that from the ground-up. They actually took a chip out of the console on purpose so that they could add it later in carts. That was the chip that Pilot Wings uses to do extra math.
@@robertwilson3866LMAOSHISMS
You need to take that act on tour, it's comedy gold!
super nintendo
Their are times where I couldn't tell weather you're playing SNES or Genesis. The transition was that good. The only way to tell was to listen to the music and sound FX. Good video!
Graphics - SNES
Non-vocal sound - tie
Vocal sound quality - SNES
Vocal sound arcade-faithfulness - Genesis
Music - Genesis
Gameplay - tie
Arcade-faithfulness - Genesis by a hair, both had missing animations and smaller character sprites but Genesis had arcade-faithful music, vocals, and intro
Controller - Genesis (6 button better for SF2 for sure)
Verdict - doesn’t matter… didn’t matter then and REALLY doesn’t matter now. I was a SNES baby in the 90s because SNES was so stacked with a host of other classic exclusive bangers so I was playing the SNES version as a matter of course and there are a ton of 100% arcade-faithful home ports today and therefore no real reason to play either the SNES or Genesis ports today except for the novelty.
Is this a fair comparison? What version is exactly the one from Mega Drive? It looks like some emulator, not to mention it is written "hack emulation" in the intro : /
Ah, if this is the hacked version on Genesis then this isn't a fair comparison at all.
There was a hack that fixed the poor color palette of the genesis, and or audio quality samples on the Genesis. Essentially this is what should have been released.
SNES WINS! Better sound and colours.
Both versions are great - spent many happy hours playing both. If sound and graphics are your only criteria for comparisons then it's a very limited view. The SNES has the better sound chip and a wider colour pallet. Yes the digitised speech is better on SNES but I'm not as keen on the SNES music, it has a much beefier feel to it - and truer to the arcade - on the Mega Drive. Graphically, SNES has more colour but the Mega Drive has greater contrast.
When it comes to gameplay then again it's close but for me the Mega Drive felt like the better version to play. It's faster and more responsive than the SNES - especially when you set the Mega Drive to he max speed setting.
Overall the Mega Drive is marginally the better version for me.
Super Nintendo wins
I agree. Despite I prefer SNES to Megadrive due to Nintendo games and its catalogue, in this case I prefer Megadrive´s version. The feelings are more similar to arcade. Besides I think Megadrive´s game is more difficult in hardest mode. It´s a real challenge to defeat it.
Ryu's theme sounds better in snes version
Sex Corpio lol. No. Listen to arcade version then come back and listen to these two. Genesis is closer
str8duval shut up 😂
@@str8duval Closer to a shit source than? So SNES did a better job than the acrcade?
@@23GreyFox Closer to the ORIGINAL source ;)
@@diego.92 True, but the arcade is still worse than the SNES sound ship.
Can’t wait for street fighter turbo to be on the snes classic
It is on it! I also got Super SF2 and SF Alpha 2 on my modded SNES classic.
Mega drive version is light years better
Snes wins
snes of course!!!!
The Megadrive is just not as powerful as the SNES. The SNES has so many custom chips and it can rotate sprites and display polygons like in Starfox and Doom.
Hardly surprising seeing as the SNES was released 2 years later then the Mega Drive
The Megadrive had a faster processor than the SNES by the way
@@robcowleydnb The SNES was faster. That's why it could draw more sprites and move more scrolling layers around. There was just no 16 bit console as powerful.
@@robertwilson3866 I'm sorry but you are incorrect, the Genesis CPU had faster clock speed than that of the SNES. What the SNES did have over the Genesis though was the ability to display more colours on screen at once, hardware polygon processing, among other things.
@@robcowleydnb What would happen if you put the Genesis CPU in an Atari 2600? The answer is not that much. The CPU means little. It's all about the GPU.
In alcuni scenari e in alcune musiche prevale il Mega Drive in altri il Super Nintendo, entrambi capolavori assoluti!
Good video, well researched!
The video doesn't talk about CPS1 chains. These are present in arcade and Genesis, totally missed in SNES. That is a huge deal, as a lot of combos and poke strings that work in arcade and Genesis, do not work on SNES. The team that Made the Genesis version was way more Arcade savvy and knew all the little details. The fact that Genesis has CPS1 chains, factually makes it the better playing game. It's just overall more faithful to the arcade in general.
Also, the CPS1 and Genesis have pretty similar hardware, both being Motorola 68000 based systems, making it easy af to port CPS1 code to the Genesis. I'd love to see a Genesis and PC Engine port comparison though, since NEC Avenue were always amazing at arcade ports.
Seriously though, how often do people actually use those chains? Looking at this tournament, only rarely:
ua-cam.com/video/7f5poA5zYWQ/v-deo.html
@@madspunky I participate in those tournaments and this tourney was like 90% ST players that don't utilize it much.
Shoto players utilize it the absolute most. Is it required? No, but its added layer to the characters. More tools.
The name of the game is accuracy. I use cps chains often. I can more accurately play my gameplan on the genesis version. It's a better representation. In this Era, it's moot point as these versions are irrelevant
@@SabreAZ thanks! I wasn't aware!
9:07 Damn that throw was worth a lot of damage.
SNES
You should use World Warrior for SNES music and sound, It's the same samples and the same tracks but in Turbo, they used too much echo to the point it distord horribly the sample. World Warrior may have this "crappy early SNES Capcom quality" but at least it's the "real" SNES renditions of every samples.
Personally I grew up with WW in 50Hz and didn't even know that SF2 was an arcade game. While i can clearly see how arcade is far superior (Vega CPS1 sounds sooooooo good) I think SNES and Genesis have their pros and cons on for each music translations. A lot of people tend to claim that Genesis is superior to SNES because it sound faitfull to the arcade but in my opinion not that much better than the SNES actually. CPS1 was 8 channel four operators FM + 4 ADPCM channels for drums and sound effects. While one can assume Genesis MAY sound closer because it's FM too is wrong, because in the end, the Genesis OST had to be adapted to 5 FM channels (4 op like the arcade fortunately) + 1 PCM (split in two actually) + 4 PSG channels. So for example, ken's stage on SNES, while sounding crappy because of "early SNES capcom music" as I said earlier, you can still take the CPS1 version and the SNES version in audacity and they will sound exactly the same for the pitch and the timing while on the Genesis, it is slower, they didn't even reuse the same FM instruments as CPS1 and the drums are totally different.
So i'm not trying to bahs the Genesis because I learned to love this OST too. But I think it's not "faitfull" to the CPS1, it's jsut an adaptation like the SNES. And in the end I love the SNES one despite the shitty sample quality because of nostalgia and i grew to love Genesis too for what it did with the hardware, while not being like the arcade.
SNES won trust the comments!!!
Snes best sound.
snes wins.....
The Genesis hardware was like a downgraded CPS1, so it looked, sounded and played a lot more faithful to the arcade but with a general AV downgrade. The music in particular is almost identical to the arcade just missing those bad ass crash cymbals. Also the genesis uses the actual voice/sfx samples from the arcade machine where the SNES uses re-recorded "approximated" samples (compare how Ryu says "Hadoken" in the SNES verses the Genesis, also announcer voice etc etc). Reversely the SNES was like a downgraded CPS2 which is why it has the more faithful Super Street Fighter 2 port
damn, the music on Kens level sounds like it was played on a fog horn on the SNES 14:28
Blanka song was wayyyyyy better on the saga. But I’ve got them on both systems and I love’em!
Wow Ryu is 53? And chunli is 50
Snes version are the game. Power sound and colour
Sega genesis sounds great. It's that muffled death cry that irritates your ear.
The Mega Drive port is closer to the arcade, but suffers, from a technical point of view, on delivery.
The SNES port on the other hand, while not as faithful to the arcade, is a cleaner and more interesting/unique home port because of its modified sound effects and music, which sounds very different to the arcade. Its colours are arguably better than the arcade too.
I'm always drawn more towards the SNES ports, because they felt like you were getting a version that actually took specific advantage of the SNES' individual unique hardware capabilities.
The Mega Drive version is the better attempt at emulating the arcade though, it's just a shame the colours and bitrate of the sound was lacking.
Both versions great for different reasons, but will always gravitate towards the SNES over both the Mega Drive and even arcade versions, because it just had its own identity as a home port.
I prefer both 16bit ports to the arcade because of the higher speed and better gameplay 👍🏼
@@greensun1334 The console versions didn't really have better gameplay, it just seemed that way because you had access to the higher difficulty settings in the options.
@@Longlostpuss you have eight difficulties in the arcade version too (dipswitch menu). The gameplay of the 16bit ports is a little bit different, it's more fluid (maybe because of missing animation frames) and you can adjust the speed (10 variations in SNES/GEN).
Genesis music > SNES music
Sorry, but the music in the Genesis version sounds close to the original CPS1 arcade game...
I always preferred the Mega Drive version to the SNES version.
Your comparison is cheating because you're using a rom-hacked version on Genesis that came out 30+ years after the fact. The original Genesis version's visuals and sound are even worse than shown in this video and pale when compared to the SNES, especially some of the utterly terrible voice sounds. So SNES wins because it's not cheating. But, if anyone should similarly rom-hack the SNES version 30+ years after the fact and touch up basically every single aspect of it to be even better than the original, well then we can compare like for like properly and fairly.
i agree on what you said .. that is not a fair comparation. it will be fair VS if someone hack the snes version too .and correct the colors on the snes with that extra colors palatte .. it will look better . the guy who did the video must be a megadrive fan.. i like the megadrive too
Sound is better on the snes, Vega sounds really bad on the genesis.
40:20, the text (copy/paste) not match with the pictures! ^^ By the way, thank you! :)
Genesis for music and controllers
Snes for graphics and sounds
Both win period.
mega drive versions always got more content,, wonder why
Came out later on Genesis so they added a bit more content (at Sega's request no less).
The colour patch fixes what the game should of looked like on the megadrive anyway. It's no secret the megadrive had a reduced colour palette and need careful consideration.
That said it outshines the snes version every way. Both have had pcm samples. Graphics speed definitely goes to the megadrive.
Megadrive has far superior power to snes both video hardware cpu and system buses. The snes could of been better had it had a better cpu and more system bandwidth.
Both versions are the same when it comes to speed and controls. The only difference in gameplay is that the Genesis still had the CPS1 combos, which in reality hardly anybody used.
SNES WINS IT HAD BETTER GAME PLAY AND SOUND LIKE THE ARCADE VERSION
Charis Glaze Sorry but the SNES version sounded nothing like the arcade. Genesis was much closer
Not only color hacked...audio patched too
Yes, and it is totally functional in the original hardware, on the other hand, that doesn’t mean that it has better colors than in Super Nes.
Which audio is better? that depends on the point of view of each person.
SNES and Sega is an old fashioned...left with memories... Nowadays is an era of a PS4 Pro versus XBOX one X Project Scorpio.
sega ryu knock out sings "ooooh oh aww aww" snes knock out "oherr" kill me every time :D
I would say, sega wins with 6 button pad, but in ssf2 snes wins
Does the Genesis 6-button pad beat this: ua-cam.com/video/QRUMzw70Lvg/v-deo.html
GREAT ATTEMPT FROM MD
The Snes version have better graphics and sound
Genesis was good but SNES destroys especially in music and color.
I always cry when i hear the ending theme. Guess im in midlife
Recep Metin Erdem Genesis had better music and closer to the arcade.
Sagat face will always give me nightmares
Just gotta say fair play to this guy he is definitely a very skilled sf2 player.
No 60fps? :(
The Genesis version with the color and voice hack is better than the snes version. But the original Genesis version would not have beaten the snes version. It was still great but the snes had newer hardware so it had the advantage, other than cpu speed which was twice as fast on the genesis than the snes.
Who said this was a hack 😉
Anyone who says Genesis is blind and a fanboy. Everyone knew the Genesis version blew ass, even the PCengine version was better than SEGA’s
Ben Owen1 couldn’t have cared less, the graphics and sounds were awful on the Genesis, that’s what my eyes and ears saw/heard. No amount of tweaks after that gonna change that. No fanboy here, I had all the systems and some games were better on one console than another but THIS was not one of them.
Eh when you're talking about a fighting game, as long as it doesn't suffer from any glitches or slowdown, you've got a working port. Most kids didn't have both a Genesis and a Super Nintendo back in the 90s. The Super Nintendo itself was pretty expensive, especially compared the Genesis in the United States.
At the end of the day, simply being able to play StreetFighter 2 at home was the most important thing. As long as it performed on par with original arcade version, who cared about a few cut corners?
The difference is there, but it's not really big. As a kid, i even thought both 16bit ports are a 1:1 "copy" of the arcade original...
i feel the same. the mega drive wins for me. but they both fail in not having the walking back animation which was prevalant to me in the arcades/
SUPER NINTENDO WINS BY FAR!!! Muffling sounds make qualities softer and smoother.
OMG, the sound on the sega sounds like it's been sent through a tin can... and the colors are horrible compared to the snes. so snes wins but saying this, both games are awesome
Nokou SNES version ain't any better
That muffled tin can sound was the snes.
True but that tiny bit better than segas version
Are u sure... I'll check it out as i own both games and consoles...
your comparing a hack version THAT IS NOT A FAIR vs if someone did a hack on the snes version it will look better beacuase of the extra color palatte the snes had
The genesis version seems to be modded, judging from the intro "color hack". Either way snes wins might be missing the intro but the overall game play is better as well as better looking and sound
dem gutts I think it's almost to close too call. The SNES looks better in some stages and the Genesis in others. Blanka's stage looks leagues better on the SNES, and the Genesis looks far better in Ryu's stage. Furthermore, if you look at Balrogs stage, the most frantic of all the stages the Genesis looks better. Chun Li's stage on the SNES, the second busiest stage trumps the Genesis version, especially in the clouds. They both play extremely well (I own them both now and when they came out). One fact that can not be understated, the SNES clearly has the sound, but the animation is better on the Genesis and Sega's machine that could is faster. Lastly, it's unfortunate that Capcom didn't put the necessary time in with the Genesis port as it has been proven that the sound could have been dead on perfect and the colors given the chance can hold there own. Shame on Capcom for doing that but does it really matter not really. Fanboys are going to cry no matter what, as I have said my entire gaming career (for lack of a better word) own them both, don't limit yourself based off of some undeserved loyalty that neither company deserves.
He asked which version I preferred: Like him I started with the arcades then I played World Warriors on the SNES and loved it. I bought the Sega Genesis version on the first day of release and like him, I was like my God Sega has done it. I bought the SNES version a few months later and even though I had them both at the same time- I preferred the Genesis version. They both are absolutely fantastic and that is just my opinion.
Sounds and music are ported directly from the arcade version on Genesis, which makes the sounds more accurate to arcade, just at a lower bitrate, due to cartridge size limitation.
Gameplay is what matters tho ultimately, atleast to me, and Genesis, plays more true to Arcade. The simple fact that the genesis has Cps1 chains and SNES doesn't is a pretty big deal when it comes to accuracy
The sampled sfx are also pretty scratchy on MD due to the subpar sound driver Capcom used here, but there's a hack that improves them.
Agreed. This is not the original Genesis/MD rom. Poor comparison. And just an FYI, I prefer the Genesis version because of the 6 button controller and the slightly smoother gameplay. Both are excellent, however.
SabreFGC If you're going off game play? SNES plays way better.
The MegaDrive/Genesis version is the only version that has the CPS 1 chain, therefore more faithful.
streetfighter.fandom.com/wiki/CPS1_Chain
True, but how often are they used?
Genesis version: better than nothing. Snes version: clearly, the most fateful one.
Megadrive plays much closer to the arcade than the SNES does
@@robcowleydnb of course, they just had to keep the 68000 code for AI and game engine from the CPS1
its a close one but i give the edge to the snes because they sacrifice a couple things for better sound and colour
Jonathan Bruce edge goes to genesis for better and smoother gameplay. A few extra colors < gameplay
SNES sound chip was good for orchestrated music, but sucked for "pop" or techno beats... Also, it was very muffled, and some developers got out of control with the reverb. I just prefer the Genesis FM chip for clarity. Same could be said for the samples --- Genesis samples might sound "rougher", but compared to the muffled/soft/echo laden samples of the SNES, they *can* sounds better.
Pride Resurrection I
Yes
I agree on the color issue too. Darker colors in Genesis, while looked a bit "last gen", didn't look as washed out and blurry as SNES
This is not always true. In games like Side Pocket on the SNES the soundtrack sounds like real 1980s synthpop, on the MD it sounds much more artifical.
sucked for techno beats??? check vortex on snes...
sega sounds sucks
sega chip sound is older and made by yamaha , snes chip sound is sony
Sounds on MegaDrive version is awesome, i dont like the SNES version.
SF2 on MD feel arcade games, on SNES i feel a home video game like others games without something special.
Indeed
The digitised speech is better on SNES but the music and sound fx have a more beefier feel to them on the Mega Drive - more like the arcade.
The sound on the mega drive / genesis is just too good.
Was it not always the case that the SNES has better graphics/sound but the Megadrive was faster? So they were both neck and neck in the end? Cheers. J
Snes
Snes-over use of echo filter on sound and sound effects makes the game sound like it was recorded in an empty bathroom .
Snes has more colors ,but the character sizes are so big they just seem stretched out.
Street fighter was a better game on sega genesis even with whatever short comings it had (scratcy voices & less saturated colors)
Snes animations also seemed a bit weird,
As if their over animated, sega genesis animations seem tight and direct no extra animations that take too long to play out for the sake of looking smooth.
The genesis version when u kick someone in the mouth,it felt like a direct hard kick the animation was direct the sound effect was direct everything played out like a hard ass kick in the mouth..
On the snes,a kick in the mouth sounded like three kick and the animation played out in slow type of the way,the impact doesn’t coincide with the sound effects
Snes because sega has awful sounds and colors
Ryu stage best stage to make comparisons!
Mega Drive
snes version sounds clear, but in a bathroom setting while played thought a pillow. Every sound on snes SF sounds wet. mega drive is crusty but sounds like arcade samples. even the music on mega drive sounds more like the arcade. To me the snes takes getting use to..... but consider this, many people actually remember the snes version more than the arcade because they first played it on snes not arcade..... but if you pay more attention you see the megadrive version was more faithful to the source. the only problem i have with sega version is.... they could have done more. the resolution should have been the full MD 320x224 not 256x224 with boarders, and as this colour patch shows, the MD would have done a better job if more time was spent analysing the palette.
I love version Genesis but snes wins
Anybody saying SEGA is just being stubborn. The graphics, sprites, and sound is clearly better on the SNES.
James Matthews No. Most people saying Sega are true things of the Arcade original. Most of the tracks sounded a lot closer to the arcade. The voices all tho scratchy still were the arcade voices and that the sped up crap from sft. The Genesis version just had more the Arxade touches that were recognizable as shown in the video.
Graphically... duh. The SNES can display more colors on screen at once. But is that the whole story. What about gameplay? It's universally agreed that the gameplay is better on the Genesis/Mega Drive.
If you have a Genesis in 10mhz, 60hz with Game in 50hz, and hack Game and 6 bouton joysticks 👌
sega 😍😍😍😍
A lot of snes funboy haters around Sega is infinite better more frames, and rich bass themes compare Honda theme
Most of the themes from the megadrive just sounds stupid
Ryu, Honda, Guile, Ken, Zangief, Balrog & Sagat are better in SNES. The rest in Genesis. SNES is better.
Frames were dropped on the SNES version, but sound a music were better, but megadrive played smoother....
TheT0nedude The music on the Genesis was much better meaning closer to the arcade. The SNES was more like a remixed version
Just so everyone knows, these home ports of Street Fighter II games doesn't have to be exactly like the arcade for them to be good. They could be too much like the arcade and still sucks for bad framerates or control.
Now do streets of range....oh wait
nice video
MEGA DRIVE
What’s with the Genesis version’s KO sound made by the characters? “Ooooowwhaaaaaaaaaa”. Terrible.
Sega Genesis all the way baby
The Sega version is definitely better, but for some reason they dropped the ball on the Super Street Fighter 2 for the Gen/MD.
