Connor mentioned that David quit American football because he thought his invulnerability would be discovered but he really quit because his wife-to-be found it to be too violent, at that point he had no idea he was invulnerable.
In fact, he faked an injury in a real car crash as an excuse for quitting and ended up believing it later, further convincing himself that he could be hurt

    • @trequor

Indeed, he faked the crash causing an injury so he could quit playing ball because she said she'd never marry a ball player. Key indicator that she was "the one" in his opinion.

I would say that David knew he was an exceptional footballer but didn't understand why. It's kind of like he needed to go on this journey to discover his true potential rather than spending that greatness all on football. Not unlike the first superman movie where his earthly father says "It's not to score touchdowns".

"Men need a purpose. If they don't have a purpose they would rather go out into the woods and die. ---Adam Lane Smith.
That really does connect together with UNBREAKBLE and the themes that run through the entire trilogy.
Throughout the film, Bruce Willis feels more like a ghost than he did in THE SIXTH SENSE, he feels barely connected to his own life, just going through the motions of it, what generally gets referred to by the internet psychologists as "survival mode," which the bare minimum: "keep moving, keep eating, keep functioning," with no higher experience of either joy or fulfillment.
It is only when David Dunn finds his purpose, acknowledging his own power, yes a Masculine Power, to change the world, the small low level world of individuals we all exist within, that he can finally be fully human, fully alive.
What people failed to realize about GLASS, not unexpectedly, was what the film posited as the real villain of the story was not Mr. Glass, it was the forces that tell you to "do nothing and be happy."
It's not fair for some people to be exceptional while others are not.
Where have we heard that before?
There is something fascinatingly elevating about the sentiment that, the worst thing you can be is not a supervillain (like Mr Glass) or a monster (like The Horde). No, the worst thing you can be is Nothing. Neither Good (David) or Evil (Elijah), instead what the Bible calls "lukewarm," taking no side, standing on no principle, letting others decide your fate, going through the functions of existing but never thriving, never challenging, never reaching the peak of your potential, even if it's your potential for what's wrong.
Isn't that what you see when you look around in the West? A comatose population like David Dunn, going through their day just trying to sustain themselves, keeping their heads down, going wherever the majority goes?
Then you have the "Clover Leafs," the people who "don't exist" yet tell us they know what is best for us, about what is fair?
The entire ending of the movie turns the question on the audience: "No. It isn't about what these characters will do to be exceptional. What are YOU going to do to be exceptional?"
The next issue of the comic is for YOU to not just write but to LIVE.
    Thank You for Reading.

"There have been several airliner crashes where there was only one survivor out of hundreds of passengers, but one of the most well-known incidents is the crash of the 2005 Air France Flight 358.
On August 2, 2005, Air France Flight 358, an Airbus A340-300, overshot the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport during a thunderstorm and crashed into nearby Etobicoke Creek. The aircraft burst into flames, and of the 297 passengers and 12 crew members on board, only one person survived.
The survivor, a 24-year-old woman named Juliane Koepcke, was sitting near the middle of the plane and was thrown from the aircraft as it broke apart. Despite suffering a broken collarbone, a gash to her arm, and other injuries, she managed to make her way through the woods and find help.
Koepcke's survival is considered miraculous, and she is one of the few people in history to have survived a commercial airliner crash with only minor injuries."

I can relate. I know I have great potential. But in order to realize that potential, I have to take risks I can't afford.
People depend on my humble but "secure" earnings. Like my indebted parents and my future child (due in july 2023). So I can't throw all of that to the wind and dedicate myself to the pursuit of self realization.
What kind of man would I be if I abandoned my family who needs me in favor of the pursuit of realizing my potential?

Since I know at least a couple of the guys are gamers, just thought I'd share a perspective from that space:
A rare example of such things as virtuous is why I actually quite enjoyed RE Village. Ethan Winters was mostly a blank slate in the preceding title, but even then had the latent drive to reclaim and save his wife after going into a mad situation utterly blind. He persisted even past the point of death, when weaker men would have succumbed and lost all sense of self. And then even after physically perishing upon saving his daughter, saved her AGAIN when she was trapped as a teenager. I'd argue that a portrayal of straight white male in such a protagonist light has actually dwindled more in games than other media.
