To me the Yi lite looks better than the GoPro. Then you add in the GoPro cost and I'm glad I got the Yi lite. Heck for $200 I can have extra batteries, memory cards and mounts.

I got the Yi Lite, Bluetooth Selfie stick(with warranties), charger with 2 extra batteries and the 64mb card for $260. Amazing value, and the camera is excellent.
Great video. So I have stayed away from GoPro because of the higher price point and the availability of similar budget units. That being said, the fact that GoPro has their free editing software keeps me considering them. What are your thoughts on their software? Is there any real added value there? Whats your favorite editing platform?
Awesome video, I have the yi lite but the battery seems to die very quickly. I think its because I live in cold weather in the winter and I have only used it in the winter so far. does the battery die quickly for you on the yi?
No I haven't had that problem so far, batteries generally dont like the cold so hopefully when it warms up you'll see some improvement! 👍
a trick: watch movies at Flixzone. Been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.

Question: How long will they record? 5 min, 20 min, 30 min at a time? Not asking about card capacity Just how long they record at one time. But if you want to add the card capacity that will be good also? Thanks and really like your videos.

Yi Lite or Mijia Mini? I'm trying to decide between this two, but in some videos the contrast on the Mijia seems off (like the sky is completely white - just a bright light, you can't see clouds, while on the Yi Lite you can).
But on some other comparison vidios it's the other way around, well it's kinda hard to decide. Both stabilization seems to be good.
thanks for the review - nice and concise. Seems it really depends on what you want to use the camera for. GoPro for more down and dirty, bike riding, mud slapping type fun and YiLite for literally lighter duty filming.

Good review...Thinking about buying the Yi Lite...I do a lot of hunting, so I DO need waterproof capability. You mentioned that you lose audio with the waterproof case....Does that does mean that while the Yi Lite is in the waterproof case, you lost the MIC also? So while you are recording a hunting trip hunt, you don't pick up anything anyone is saying? Thanks

Definitely late to the game but love the videos. I'm taking an island trip in a couple of months to include scuba diving and looking at used/refurb GoPros. Depreciation seems to have hit the Hero 2018 hard, you can find refurbished on eBay for under $70. Worth it for the money or would I be better off getting a refurbished Hero6 black?
It would be interesting to have a poll to see who thinks which camera has a better image. Unfortunately image quality really is distorted by the compression going to UA-cam. Plus if someone has an iffy connection it's not going to look great either.
Yeah absolutely! That's why when talking about cameras so close in comparison it's really hard to make a definitive statement about the image quality.
The Everyday Dad The reality is that we have to rely on you to evaluate the raw footage to determine which has the better video quality. You say they they are close, so we’ll have to trust that. I will say the one thing I love be about my Hero 4 Silver after the last firmware update is the Linear mode. Have you looked at that feature from GoPro?
Thanks to your videos I finally decided to get the yi lite as my first action cam. Just wondering if you could share or give me advice in your settings when recording. My laptop is dead since some days so I have not been able to check the footage there, only in the tiny display, which obviously doesn't look good at all.
Looking for a action camera and don't know which to buy. Basically it's just for mounting on my guitar headstock, won't be using audio from the device. Do I go with the original YI, Yi lite, Yi 4k + for best quality or do I buy a second hand GoPro back edition 3 or hero 4 ? Apart from the original YI the prices are all very similar

Im new to action cameras and I would like to know how long does the battery last while recording. I want this camera to record my kids baseball games and I would like a cam that can shoot for at least 2 hours straight.
Okay I bought the Yi lite and I can only record up to 9 minutes per clip? Why is this? After 9 mins it just stops recording.

I've been watching a lot of your videos lately since I'm action cam shopping for my helmet. The Yi Lite I realize is less expensive, but by the time I add the waterproof case, cost went up. I do like the fact there are lens filters available for the Yi Lite. Still undecided.

I use a stabilizing gimbal when I use my Hero5 Black while mountain biking and with the placement of one of the microphones in the camera I get the annoying droning/whining sound from one of the gimbal motors but I don't get that when I'm using one of the cheaper (knock-off) action cameras. Do you know if the new Hero 2018 has the same microphone placement as the Hero5/Hero6 Black editions? When you did this video while mountain biking did you also use a gimbal or did you use the stabilizing feature built-in to the camera?
Yeah it's the exact same body (from what I can see as my hero 6)
And yes for the MTB sections I had it in my feiyutech g5 gimbal 👍

I rarely use the audio from my action camera, I dont think it does but I haven't really looked for it

Anyone know the which one has better audio? Going on a trip to Thailand in a little over a month, so I wanted an action camera that's waterproof (at least have a decent waterproof case), nice image quality, some form of image stabilization, and an audio that doesn't come out muffled or really sensitive to wind. I was considering the GoPro hero, but one look at the price compared to the Yi Lite, and I'm not so sure on what I should get. I was leaning towards the Yi Lite, but I would like to know if the audio works well.

Shreya Dawady the audio on the Yi Lite is very good.
Even though this is too late.... if you use waterproofing case on Yi Lite, you won't have audio at all. If you want audio and waterproofing at the same time, your only option is GoPro.

@the everyday dad, how do you transfer videos from the Yi Lite to your computer? I transferred a small video file and when I played it from my laptop, the footage is pixelated and choppy. It's awful. Am I doing something wrong?
I just use my sd card.
Thanks. I tried transferring directly from the SD card and it was still bad. Did some Google research and it appears that the problem is my that my laptop can't handle the high video quality :-(

I want to see the Yi Lite attatched to a drone at with the image stabilization on 1080p 60fps slowed down half speed in post to see if it can get decent cinematic video

Have you had any issues with any of your GoPro or Yi cameras so far?
I've been using 1 canon g7x & 3 sjcam4000's for like 3 years now mounted on a Samson MK-10 boom mic using their frame mount + a 1/4 male to female thread - And they still work fine (though I don't know if one is a fake or not, but it still works lol) BUT, one of my cameras gave out on me the other day..
I think I've narrowed it down to these, but if you know something else that would fit my needs better Please let me know. Cuz if the one I get is way better than my Sjcam's then I might get 2 more (so, cost is a factor)
GoPro Hero 5 Black refurbished = $220 each ($170 after $50 trade in for my sjcam4000)
Yi-4K (not 4K+) = $150 from their website...but no trade in offered.
*I do like that the GoPro Hero 5 Black has the Linear mode (cuz fish eye looks weird on drums)
**I also use Screenflow 7, if that makes a difference with those 2 cameras above.
These will be for UA-cam drum videos, SO...
1. I don't really need stabilization (unless it will help with #6)
2. I don't really need 4k either actually..
3. I'll be shooting in 1080p 30fps, MAYBE 60fps (if I feel like it would look cool)
4. The cameras will be on a Samson MK-10 boom stand using their frame mounts + GoPro Tripod adaptor.
5. I don't need the audio to be great (I get my audio edited)
6. I've noticed my bass drum does cause the video to shake with my Canon G7X (1st one, not mark 2), but that could just be because it's heavy while attached to my boom stand.
7. BUT they will be in low light. I use 2 neewer 176 LED lights, black background on my walls, no other lights on.

So I am looking at the Waspcam ROX 9941. Saw an ad for 49.00 US. Did not know nor look to see, that there are a number of action cams out now in that price range. What I am seeing is that, as you say about image quality, you get what you pay for. I mean that, after watching many videos now, that there seems to be little difference in image quality between the budget camera offerings. However, I also see that the image quality of some of the GoPro cameras is not really any better. I will admit this could be due to my computer limitations or other such things. Anyway, Thanks so much for these reviews.

Any thoughts on some of the bad reviews of the gopro water proofing? Obviously I don't know if the consumer is making a mistake causing the failure but I found several bad reviews that the water proof failed. Gives concern to not have the external case for water. Really enjoy your videos, newly subscribed.
David Cowan submerged mine without issue. Just make sure gaskets are clean and all doors are fully closed before entering water. Also don’t forget additional waterproof housings can be used to increase depth and add extra water protection. 😉👍
Great review, so this GoPro 2018 has EIS and now that I am in the market for a action camera it is easy to get the GoPro. One thing I dislike about a lot of other action cameras is not the cheap build quality but the lack of firmware support and fixing bugs. The advantage with the GoPro echo system is clear to me, and on top of that they do fix things with firmware updates. That in it self is worth the extra money, at least for these somewhat cheaper GoPro cameras.

M Lewis Sauerwein I know, then there is the audio input on Sony without needing a dongle, but harder to get all accessories and mounts. 🤷🏻♂️
The sony is amazing, the only thing I dont like about it is the shape.

I am still using the... don't tell at me..... the hero 5 session... I want a new one but this camera thing gets a little pricey if you don't want to sacrifice quality.
I never yell at anyone for using gear that works for them. Even if I say something is terrible I generally hope that someone can get it to work, thats why I rarely flat out say don't buy something because theres usually a market for anything.
And yes cameras are an expensive hobby once you fall down the rabbit hole!
I will say, when using it as "gasp" a camera (1080 video @ 60 fps with pictures every 5 secs), I have been thouroughly impressed by the YI lites 16 mp sensor. The pictures usually come out really really damn sharp

Obviously gopro is the winner. Coz if you will go for yi lite then you will spend extra for case and other stuff but with the gopro its already package. And whats the use of an action cam if its not water proof or durable?

Blake Ellis unless 4K is essential to you I’d go with the GoPro hero 2018 as the touchscreen and voice activation both bring massive advantages imo.

Thanks for the video. I have a really budget, $40 knock off, the image is it terrible, but the audio is absolutely worthless. How is the audio on both of these cameras? Obviously not expecting wireless lav mic quality, but is it usable?
It's alright, I'm actually surprised at how good the audio is on the gopro hero. The lowlight section is all audio from the hero 😁👍

Nice videos :) But I think that a fair comparison would with the YI 4k, because of their similar prices. Also a video comparing GoPro 2018 and the Hero 5 black would be nice, because the price difference is only 50 $ at the moment. I know that the black does 4k and stuff, but in some videos it seems that the newer model has better EIS and better colors.

I don’t get the hero 2018 purpose. I don’t know the pricing in other countries but here in Italy the hero 2018 il 219,99€ while the hero 5 black is 283,90€. The difference is just less than 70€ and the hero 5 black is still a great camera, it does 4K and 1080 @120 fps... really I don’t get why would anybody buy the cheaper one...

I don't see a big difference for my tastes. But you didn't give a sound check. I've had sucky microphone quality from GoPro clones. Often the mic was s buried in the case with no hole.
I like this Yi cam just because of a real tripod mount. Video in low light was better. But?? Microphone check please
