Summary:
The Tubes are a Bay-Area band best known for their skewering of popular culture issues of drugs, celebrity, and their namesake: Television. At this Bill Graham-produced show, the Tubes had sold out the Winterland for the first time. The band's stage antics are as lively as ever, owing to the festive spirit of New Year's Eve. Less than 25 minutes into the set they count down to 1976, with lead singer Fee Waybill endlessly insisting that there is another minute-and-a-half to go and feigning a broken watch.
The Tubes had only released one record at the time of this recording, 1975's The Tubes, which was produced by Al Kooper. That record contained the derisive "White Punks on Dope" as well as the disco-rock sales pitch "What Do You Want From Life." Both songs contained ample background noise and bizarre vocals.
We are at some disadvantage being unable to see the stage show (we don't know why exactly the "tube job" during the sketch "A Word From Our Sponsor" is eliciting such whoops, for example); but we can hear sketches like "Sputnik," a sort of interstellar sitcom, and there's no mistaking the live marching band that covers Steve Miller Band's "Living in the U.S.A." after the New Year's firecrackers are done exploding. (Other notable cover choices include the Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting For The Man," Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual," and the "Theme From I Love Lucy.")
From their debut record, the Tubes play "Up From The Deep," Space Baby "Malaguena Salerosa," "Mondo Bondage," "Haloes," and the aforementioned "What Do You Want From Life" and "White Punks On Dope." But they had been busy putting material together for six years at this point, and had already prepared a good portion of material that would end up on their second record. From that album, Young and Rich, they play "Tubes World Tour," "Slipped My Disco," "Stand Up And Shout," and "Proud To Be An American.
There is a load of vulgarity and fun throughout this show. And the long and irreverent program comes to a tee when Waybill puts on his "Quay Lewd" alter-ego and introduces his band as the Cocaine Piranhas.
The Tubes continue to tour today.
The Tubes are the most underrated band in the history of Rock and Roll. They deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Definitely. They had some very good numbers and I saw a lot of rock concerts in my life, got the chance to see them two times in Brussels (waaaaaaay back in time...I mean at the beginning of the 80's) and they were just brilliant ! Actually those were the most spectacular rock concerts I ever saw : rock, cabaret, parody, tongue-in-cheek or gross humor (like Zappa sometimes did, to shock people), costumes, lots of things going on on stage, fun for the band and the audience... The musicians were fantastic and Fee Waybill is/was a stagebeast... O-ver-whel-ming... :)
I liked their first albums but I think they came to their best sound and compositions with "Remote Control" and "The Completion Backwards principle" that were made after this concert from 1975. They absolutely deserve a place in the Rock'n'roll hall of fame, you're damned right !
And thanks for this great video document whoever posted it !
Frank Z You know, I ignore all the x rated concerts....I just listen to the musis...
The Completion Backward Principal is my favorite album...SO many great songs and melodies!!!!
R&R Hall of Shame is about sales and popularity . Just like the Academy awards . We should start an online monetizing website to collect funds for a Tubes monument next to the property of the Cleveland r and r Hall of Shame
Vince Welnick is in the Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead...
I think Roger Steen was a very underrated guitarist too!
47 years later and I'm still singing along,,,,
I've watched this show 1000s of times .My Uncle worked for PBS
In the early 1970s
He had this on a reel to reel.No one will ever read this ever .I fucking love this !!!!
I wonder why all the winterland shows were in b and w.
It’s cheaper
Those were the days. THESE were The Tubes.
Absolutely! They were HUGE in the SF Bay area before their "commercial" success with "She's A Beauty" and "Talk To Ya Later". The other thing close to "early" Tubes was Zappa & the Mothers.
HOLY SHIT!!! I saw them on this tour! I was 13yrs old in California! They blew my mind!!! I still have their first two albums in perfect condition! I can not thank you enough for posting this. It really is a gift of memories! 💗💗💗💗💗
Amazing! The greatest group I never saw live unfortunately. Top notch performance art and musicianship.
I'll be honest, I was hoping for more...
I like the manic-ness of the stage show, but the music, at best, sounds dated. At worst, just not good. Kinda unmemorable.
I mean, it's '75, so in rock history there is still a lot to come, but with what I've heard about The Tubes, and what I hoped for, this was kind of a letdown.
I think it was a 'You had to be there (and on dope) to get it' situation.
Man, Roger Steen on WPOD is simply amazing. Prairie, too. This band is so much heavier and brilliant than their couple hits in the 80's would suggest. Tubes Forever.
I don't care how bad things may have seemed at times growing up. The Tubes never failed to put a smile on my face.
one of the best bands ever... I saw them in around 77' Celebrity in Phoenix... Best Concert
fanfreakkingtastic show! loves the Tubes, love the Celebrity Theater!!!
Saw every Celebrity show. Great band in a great venue.
Met them at a signing at Tower Records on Thomas Rd.
Got a laugh out of Fee when we presented a bicycle tube for his autograph.
He corralled the rest of the band and we got all their signatures. Free tix, too.
The best in west. Had to shop for derby, then try not to wear it out. Success on both. Love you tubes, totally tubular!!!
Dude I saw that concert too!
I saw them twice @ Celeb... does anyone have the dates?
I was there! A night to remember.
What I want from life is more videos like this
+dave butcher ...and a baby's arm holding an apple! "The Tubes"
me 2
Can we get Bob Dylan's un-listed phone # ?
The audio for this 75' tubes concert is better than the youtube videos of the tubes 78' and 79' imho
Excellent recording and footage for the day
Pure genius...in just their first two albums, they explored new wave, disco, rockabilly, classic rock, greaser rock, progressive rock, flamenco and probably a dozen other styles that I've missed.
Growing up during the 70's and 80's, I had heard of The Tubes but never really paid much attention, considering them a novelty act. I may be over 40 years late, but I'm so glad that this music exists.
I wrote them off as a novelty act as well. This may be (arguably) the most sophisticated, comprehensive band that ever existed. The level of execution blows my MIND!
This is soooooooo fooking good! Music like this, obviously goes over the radio format and casual listeners of poop music. Brilliance at it's best: Amazing players and compositions.Fook normal!
always come here when im depressed . it really is a great pick me up
Thank you, thank you for posting. Saw them in early '76. No way you could convey this concert to anyone. You have to see it. Amazing show. Extremely talented musicians! Using video long before anyone else. Too far ahead of their time. Spooner and Steen, thanks foe the great guitar licks. Prairie Prince, what a drummer. Great work with XTC. Fee Waybill. You were born to entertain.
I was most definitely at this show. One of the all time greatest bands and best live shows ever.
Thanks for posting. Was front row balcony at this show at the ripe old age of 16. Great show. Incredible memories.
Salute
Such a great Band. I remember hearing them on night in Suburban LA....I asked what the heck is that Party...and just like Van Halen in that era, they were playing a Party like 7 blocks away....fantastic.
It is so cool that I can google the concerts I saw at Winterland. It was a magical place.....Time Capsule for me .......................Thank You.
My favorite rock concert of all time . a little something for everybody ! Greatest satirical band who could play anything , and could really rock,
my favorite rock concert ever
Just cracks me up seeing these guys again. Saw them with the Ramones at Winterland. Great stuff🔔
Spooner.
Wish i coulda seen The Tubes in their heyday! Looks like a great time!
The Tubes were one the greatest satire , stage performance companies , rock music bands of all time . nay more ! I mean they were one of the greatest in all the aforementioned categories(and then some more i left out) of all time !
Such an awesome band! I was lucky enough to get to see them live in the 80's and they did not disappoint. I love the Zappa influences as well. Absolutely amazing
Boy did they get their moneies worth!!! What a great show!!!
this was art rock at it's finest
ITS finest. Not it's. Now write it down 100 times.
Saw them in Birmingham,UK in 1978. Couldn't believe my eyes, had to go see em again the next night as well.Happy days.
Nice. Saw them on this tour, brings back memories
So sadly underrated. Mostly due to the fact that alot of their stuff never got radio play due to length or content. The Tubes, like many other bands (Black Oak Arkansas comes to mind) had to be seen live to really be appreciated.
That's because radio's too busy playing livin on a prayer for the 5000th time,,but that's ok more 70s tubes,,black oak,,wer willie, etc for me
Best concert I ever saw
Just saw the band at Reading (England) - after all these years they still have the desire and energy to deliver an excellent show. Bl***y marvellous !!!!!!!!!
After ALL these years, (Im 52 now) I am really taking Notice that These guys are really a Great Band! I am enjoying them all over again, the Hits like Shes a Beauty and Talk to ya Later but Beyond the hits, their live stuff and Studio stuff is great!! Definitely an Underrated Band!
They are great satirists and dare i say at times, have the superb musicality of early Yes .... Bill Sputnik Spooner is really rocking it on guitar during boy crazy starting around 1:15:35 and near the end of Stand Up and Shout
A very Strange, Eclectic Band, The Tubes, also, a VERY underrated pile, My Brother turned me unto the Tubes during the Late 70"s, and, So very glad that he did so. Why Be Normal? I HATE Normal Sheeple! Awesome Music, Thank you The Tubes for your contribution to the Genre of Music! Rock On Bitches!! Cheers!!
Greatest rock, satire, humour, theatrical all mixed into on concert . the greatest concert ever imho !
What a fabulous and brilliant band they are. This is amazing footage to see from 45 years ago. I did see them in 1981 in Bristol (UK) unforgettable gig.
Also as showman one of the best in all rock and variety of styles
Brilliant amazing band...so underrated...
Noooo, this was not the same year I was born?? Man. I am a Tubes SUPER FAN. I can't even believe they were creating such brilliance and Fee was singing such perfection when I wasn't even yet a sparkle in the eye of humanity. Frack, man!
im in love w/your comment. Rock On!
These guys were all very talented musicians. Ahead of their time in my opinion.
Thank 4 POSTING! 🍺😎👍
I bought the WPOD Live album when was released and wow, what an aural experience. I didn't realize that they were still performing, they need to come on over to Australia so that I can see them live.
I - was - there !!!!!!❤❤
Love you tubes. Your the man of Celebrities turn style. Still got the memories, hot stuff! God bless you all.
Thanks for posting this concert and the additonal info. There's no doubt about it, they're all as mad as a box of frogs, albeit an extremely talented, entertaining box of frogs. I saw them a couple of years ago in London and met the band after the gig. What a privilege to be able to thank, in person, the people who have brought such a lot of joy into my life through their music. I'm going to see them in Bristol in August this year, can't wait. Take care.
The same for me in Denver in, I guess, 2009. Small club, maybe 200 people. I actually got to talk to Ric Anderson for several minutes in the crowd before the show. What a GOOD dude. And I got to meet Fee, Ric, Prairie, and Roger after the show and sign my CDs. WHAT a good group of guys. I only wish they would do a reunion tour with all the surviving members of the band, including Mike Cotten and Bill "Sputnik" Spooner. "Tied for the number one group in the world"? BULLSHIT!
Sss
Daphne H Galang Eh?
greatest rock concert of all time !
Always exciting going to a Tubes show in those days! That marching band was several years before Tusk...
Great voice I was expecting him to sound like grrrrrrnnrrr
When they went into boy crazy that was killer!!!!
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing. This is awesome.
In my next life I want to come back as The Tubes lead .... kazoo player .
240 Comm ave in Boston, penthouse apt 1975 we wore their album out..................... epic band!
Oh man, thanks for this.
“oh hau hau hau...thank heavens...the Tubes world tour! A mighty, important crusade!” I would LOVE to have attended this show...but considering this took place on my 6th birthday and I didn’t move from NY to SF ’til 1997, eh...probably not possible :) THANKS for posting this show...it’s just brilliant!
best New Year's Eve i never had .
Saw them at the very beginning of their popularity, they gave it 110% .They never really got their dues! Most overlooked Rock band of time.If you didn't see them so sorry 😐. But thanks for posting this concert. Long Live Fee Waybill The Tubes.WPOD...
For a band who'd only released their debut album earlier the same year its not exactly a low budget stage show!
I love you!
Saw them last month in EAST GREENWICH RHODE ISLAND!!! For the 6th time. Brought my 2 adult kids and their spouses. Tight, tight arrangements still, stage show is just as entertaining. Wild to see Octogenarians SCREAMING White Punks on Dope along with the song... Theme of the show was The completion Backwards Principle. Thanks for everything!!!
This reminds me of my youth first saw tubes soon after this show in 5 1976 winterland aunt snuk me in at 16 dressed to the hilt nobody carded me all night..wow..that was the life of my youth..renoruona
bitchin'!
Growing up in the S.F. Bay Area in the 1970’s, they were always part of the musical soundtrack background of activities, thanks to KSJO, KSAN, KOME and KFOG.
“Not that way”.....M.DUNG
Incredibly good!
....JUST.....GREAT !!!
...........it is 05.11. 2018 and now it is 00:00 and i am 400 God bless The Tubes !
What a fantastic document of one of the most underrated rock bands of all time. Three things got in their way: 1) The music business has never taken the blending of humor and rock very seriously (Zappa, Ray Stevens, Primus, Weird Al); 2) Sputnik left the band and they were never the same again; and 3) Fee thinking it would be a swell idea to abandon fans and pursue pop fame with producer David Foster (Celine Dion. Kenny Rogers, Genny G, Groban, Streisand).
Cliff Seixas that may be so...but they had the most beautiful rock ballad of the 80's "I don't wanna wait anymore"
Brings a smile to my face every time I think of the Tubes. It was great growing up in the Bay Area and get to see this group in full costume!
Absolutely unique and entertainig, and funny, but they also kick ass and can rock.
The early version of Slipped My Disco is just....just.....just so funkyphenomenal
They were a band that needed to be SEEN to be appreciated. But the band came of age before MTV could help them.
+John Harris MTV would have ruined them, they had enough problems with the 80s looming. They were a ROCK band with satire, not POP BOYS.You are right about being good live,do you hear that bass? drums? What good would some mini movie them?WPOD
John Harris for me it works the other way around. With only the music I appreciate the music and the band even more.
But it sure is a treat to see them on stage,,, very very entertaining
The 1st "proper" band I ever saw live, and hundreds of gigs later still one if my favourites. They are almost cabaret 😀
Vince Welnick Bourgade Catholic alumnus I salute thee!! Father Tepsic still remembered you in 84 bro. Respect.
I was at this show. All I can say is wow. No comparing them to anyone else at the time.
what a show holy moley betcha that crowd was lethal too!
fan-fucking-tastic. great music/ great shows. saw them live twice. oh yeah !!
It`s along way from Europe to the U.S., so this is the first time seeing this awesome band live in their prime. Frigging! Unbelievable!
I really wish I had been born a few years earlier. Would have loved to see these guys live.
What an absurdly talented group of artists and musicians...
the drummer is amazing style
Tight one of my favourite drummer. The band great. Prince. Forget his first name.
Good times and days.
If I had a time machine I'd be
Back and leave this this mad
And dangerous world behind.
Do you agree.
The video doesn't clearly show that after they stacked up the "amplifiers," both stacks came crashing down on a dramatic note. I actually fell for it at first as a teen. And other stuff happened, like during the music, a kid would run up to the stage with an album and Fee would sign it, they'd have a few words then, Fee would punch the (planted) kid right in the face and he'd get knocked out.. These shows were absolutely amazing.
Even in the later years with the scaled down shows (because as you can guess from this show they were losing hundreds of thousands of dollars)they were hilarious. For example, there was a song on the Remote Control album that had a great roaring saxophone solo. Live, they played the verses of the song, and when it was nearing the instrumental, Fee walked out on stage with a huge tenor sax and it was like, "Wait--HE'S going to play that solo????" He puts the sax in his mouth and he's blowing and you can't hear anything while the band is playing the back-up music. Fee takes it out of his mouth and starts pointing at the sound guys and tapping the microphone and shrugging his shoulders as if the mics weren't working. GREAT stuff!
Other notes: Keyboardist Vince Welnick went on to play for the Grateful Dead, and later unfortunately committed suicide after a cancer diagnosis and years of depression. The other Tubes keyboardist/synth player/art designer Mike Cotten, has gone on to be a MAJOR show and content designer. He's done Diana Ross and Michael Jackson tours, among other newer artists and has staged the Super Bowl and Olympics. See www.mcotten.com
far out, man! :D
I saw this show in October 1975 at Masonic Temple in Detroit. Blew my mind !!! A friend of ours was at the concert, and so high on downers and beer that he stayed in the back of the half empty auditorium instead of sitting with us in out 15th row seats. He finally decided to come down and sit with us late in the concert, and as he walked down the main aisle, Fee chased him back to the rear of the auditorium with the chainsaw. Classic moment seeing him run back down the aisle.
15:06, is one great solo and man that choreography, gods!
Discovered this amazingly brilliant band as a 16 or 17yo after seeing an outlandish group pic in a US music mag. I just had to hear them and I adored their music. Bought all their albums up to Completion Backwards Principle. Fast forward to now and I have just watched this concert. It is the first time in my life I have seen a Tubes concert, the good ol Tubes, all 8 of them plus entourage. Fucking blew my mind. How so many musos can weave such a captivating and brilliant sound amazes me and always has. I never knew Michael Cotten was such a mover! Seeing the band singing together, creating those brilliant harmonies ... Vale Vince Welnick. What a band. WOW. Rick Anderson is a fabulous bassist and his long hair is great. Prairie Prince ... outstanding. Roger & Sputnik supply more than enough and Fee ... a brilliant voice and such a presence. So fuckin' good!!
Steen and Sputnik tied with greatest dual lead guitarists Hunter and Wagner who back l reed in 1973 concert and then joined alice cooper
Yep.
I'm where there are live recordings of that Lou Reed concert
You know the world ain't right when , for example , Taylor Swift get hundreds of millions of views and this legendary Tubes concert not even 70 thousand views .
Way ahead of the times...terrific band...a brilliant comet in the sky of rock & roll...
magic!
AWESOME !!!!!
wpod is one of the greatest rock songs of all time
So great full for UA-cam and for the person who uploaded this 👍
Wow... Kinda awesome!
I saw these guys @ The venerable Hollywood Paladium in 1977..I won 2 tickets from KTYD radio station but I had no car and nobody to go with so I had the radio station announce I had a free ticket for a ride down to Hollywierd. OMG this girl comes to my apt. and she is a stone fox! She also had a tab of acid we did and FRIED!!
Thats really intresting Video full sending my regards 🤠
Great stuff..
I saw this show in Phoenix, at the old Civic Center, June 1976.
fukin beautiful!!!!!!!!!
ancientofways true artist, creators. so very sad when Vince joined the 'Dead' as I had a BAD feeling which ended up happening. Saw ya's with Rundgren's Utopia in the early 80's in Beantown, where they made us sit fn down! Until Fee came through with the chainsaw. wink wink
There are bands I love. But the Tubes are the clearly most unsung. The Good Rats another, but at a different plain. I was blessed to photo shoot these guys twice in 2011/2012. Amazing people.
Honestly - I have been a big Tubes fan many years saw them live several times in the blue/orange period, but had never watched an entire show from the old days. Fee was always a great singer, as was Sputnik- I just never realized how involved this show was, and how very good Fee was. "Mondo" back then was actually scary, and he is throwing those girls up on his shoulders like feathers. The "Unusual" scenes were hilarious.
winterland the greatest fn venue ever.....even saw the ice follies there when i was a little shit
The best!
