  • What will our AI laws look like? Why do we need responsible AI? In this episode of Curiosities, Professor Ed Santow, human rights lawyer and one of the founders of the Human Technology Institute (HTI) at UTS is answering questions from our UTS community about AI and the law.
Ed’s work specialises in digital government, the future of AI regulation, AI assurance, facial recognition technology, and digital identity. Ed applies his expertise as a member of several influential bodies such as the Australian government’s AI Expert Group, Government Service Delivery Advisory Board, and the National Quantum Advisory Committee.
From 2016-2021, Ed was Australia's Human Rights Commissioner, where he led the Commission's work on AI and new technology; refugees and migration; human rights issues affecting LGBTIQ+ people; national security; and implementing the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture.
On 19 June, Ed moderated our premier public lecture series, The Vice-Chancellor's Democracy Forum (VCDF) with Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal.
Meredith was joined by a distinguished panel of UTS academics for an engaging discussion that explored the intersection of technology, ethics, responsible AI development, and their impact on our shared future.
