  • On April 27, 1813, American forces defeated the British at York (present-day Toronto) and captured the capital of Upper Canada - but not before suffering their own losses. These events at York, precipitated by the explosion of the Grand Magazine, proved to be a turning point in the War of 1812, after which the conflict degenerated into a bitter cycle of retaliation and retribution with the White House being stormed and set alight.

@Dan Snow, you’re a fantastic historian, but left something important out of this documentary. The reason that Madison and the US declared war, it was to combat a serious and illegal practice during the Napoleonic wars of press ganging American merchant seaman into the British navy.
In the lead up to the war, literally 10’s of thousands of Americans and their ships were taken into service without compensation or recourse to those kidnapped and forced to die for a country many had no affinity for nor allegiance to. Many of them would die as slaves of the British Navy never being allowed to even write home to their families. The treatment of Americans as still being subjects of the crown despite years of formal protests and numerous agreements with the UK that were not honored was the reason the US felt compelled to pursue the adventure of war.
Otherwise great documentary. As with so many moments in history, emotions took over where facts and objective decision making would likely have seen a kindler / gentler treatment of those that the US wished to integrate as citizens.
Something we all should keep in mind whenever emotions are riding high and especially when lives hang in the balance.
    Thanks

yes, it's a huge thing to leave out, and they called them ''war hawks'' instead, like US wanted to conquer the poor peaceful British empire for no reason at all xD

Wrong. The British impressed sailors because their laws saw them as British. Madison used this as an excuse to seize Upper Canada while the bulk of the British forces were fighting Napoleon. It was a stab in the back and had nothing to do with impressment. Brock had no option other than to form an alliance with Tecumseh which proved unassailable to the invaders. There was never going to be a US victory once the Napoleonic wars had reached a conclusion as the loss of Canada so soon after the loss of the US colonies would have been intolerable to the British and without doubt would have resulted in a full invasion of the US with a very real possibility of the ex colonies losing their hard won independence.
The idea that the war started because of illegal impressing and ended because the British promised to go home and be good boys is absolutely laughable. Incredibly this nonsense is still doing the rounds of the US education system.

Let us not forget the Battle of Lake Erie was the end of the War of 1812. The Brits decided to go home and promised not to Impress naval service upon American citizens. Just like the Battle of Fort Mc Henry and the birth of our National Anthem. Truly, never give up the "ship."

    • @footscorn
      @footscorn 8 місяців тому

The British stopped impressing because of the Napoleon's defeat in Europe. This released the bulk of their forces to take on the yanks. The war ended because the US invasion had been a failure with virtually zero chance of victory so saving them from further humiliation.

And then Jackson defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Probably the largest land battle during the War of 1812.

Watching historians, archaeologists, scuba divers, and other scientists turning over land
somewhere - where apt. buildings, malls, corn fields, and parking lots now are, - feels real strange, - because all this time people have been living right above them, - working and keeping apointments, laughing, crying, and hoping and dreaming, picking up the kids from school, grocery shopping,
getting their hair done, and having birthday parties, -
AND ALL DURING THAT TIME, - HISTORY NEVER ENDED - IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT THERE -
    right under your very feet.

The simple fact that for whatever reason they fail to realize and mention why the war actually started, makes me then tend to disbelieve everything else they are saying.

How can you say the War is forgotten, when there is a song about it, sung countless times yearly, mainly before sporting events.

This is by far the only piece of American history largely forgotten. I always wondered why have we forgotten this war while remembering the other wars that America fought after the war of 1812. As a student of history I feel ashamed being an American

Oh, no way is this the only piece of American history that's been forgotten! Ask several people how many of them know who the Buffalo Soldiers were. That's just one example; there's plenty more.

You feel ashamed of being an American? Because we established ideals for whole planet? We hold these truths to be self-evident…. That causes you shame? No one will deny that we haven’t lived up to them, imagine that, we as a people are imperfect. But this nation and its people have done more good for the world than ANY other people or system. And it isn’t close. If I were you I’d rethink the stories you’re telling yourself.
