Hikaru reacts to Andrea asking Magnus how the knight moves

- In today’s Game 5 Press Conference, Andrea Botez of popular channel BotezLive asked Magnus Carlsen "how does the knight move?"
Do you think this was funny or otherwise? Let’s keep the discussion in the comments.
Plus Hikaru Nakamura's reaction
I can see where hikaru is coming from, but 90% of the questions at the press conference are stupid and visibly frustrate the players so making them smile with one is not a bad thing.
, Only magnus understood the joke there😆😂
@@pedrochalaco1 There is no joke!
You got yourself a deal man. Anytime, anywhere as long as there is proctoring.
@Ayush Gupta there is a joke. In the past Magnus asked Andrea if she wanted him to teach her how the knights moved
Yes but that is literally an inside joke that no one at the press conference would even get or understand…..
I'm pretty sure chess will survive this episode
yeah sure but doesn't mean it's ok. if i steal some money from you then sure you'll survive but still there's going to be some impact.
@@nicbentulan What impact is that? It was an inside joke between the two, and Magnus gave her permission before hand to ask it. The question that was an epic fail was GM Maurice Ashley saying to Magnus that he had early hiccups an his performance wasn't smooth.
@@2ndtonone1000 but this isn't their stream this is the world championships. This is serious. If Andrea wanted jokes then just keep it on Stream or youtube. It's like how r/chess, r/chessbeginners or r/tournamentchess asks memes to go to r/anarchychess instead. Memes take up space for serious posts like how to improve on this or that or news chess or 9LX.
All the more this is an INSIDE joke i.e. people might not know the reference. I think inside joke makes it worse.
Seemed like a very unprofessional question and a waste of time. The impact I find is the opportunity cost like someone else could've asked something instead of this seemingly pointless question.
Or what memes and jokes and stuff bring more people into chess and no such thing as bad publicity?
P.s. Hikaru doesn't like the question too!

Seems like Hikaru is becoming the tightly wound chess traditionalist that he was criticising not too long ago.

It was a reference to the same question Magnus had asked Andrea around 7-8 months back.. a silly question to lighten the mood once a while I think is okay.. it's still a better question than other journalists asking whether the opponents will share a drink/cake!!
Yeah, but world championship is not an appropriate occasion to ask that question
It's just weird because it's like an inside joke, so it makes it awkward for the other people in the room, particularly for Ian. Don't think it's a big deal though
@@rakshitpandey1413 lol it also went viral and now many people know the finals are going on. To expand chess you need to lighten the mood.
I left my underwear at Magnus's house the other day. Should I have asked him at the press conference if he still has it?
@@guptayush179 Yeah, that's basically what the question sounded like to me. I really don't care what "inside" stuff is going on between Carlsen and Botez. I understand the championship is a serious event. That being said, I feel like chess can really have a pompous self importance and indignace to any fun or humor. Magnus clearly found it funny, and this is the kind of stuff that will make chess accessible to the next generation. Stern faces and suits aren't entertaining.
Yes, Magnus found the humor. I didn't because I had no idea what it was about. Why are "inside" jokes in a press conference meant for a general audience?

@@MichaelAllen-ks8gq It's like asking Messi how does a ball roll. Largely a harmless question, but just a bit weird and silly.
Hikaru just thinks that it is not appropriate to ask that kind of joke question during the world championship press conference.
Similar antics are usually frowned upon in most events (there was this one guy Barry Bremen who was famous for impersonating umpires/refs/players in sporting events, for example). They seem fun every once in a while, but are generally frowned upon so as not to encourage more people to do it and cause it to go from "haha it was funny that one time" to "ugh, again?".
With the advent of the internet, if they let one person get famous without ramifications for doing what Bremen did, you know for sure people will start doing it in droves until things got disruptive. Now you'd probably get a lifetime ban for doing what he did.
In this case, Andrea set a precedent for making these interviews a content farm for content creators by making jokes.
Not as disruptive to events, sure, but the general idea seems to be the same as to why some people think it's inappropriate.

@@otakurocklee Who cares if it's an inside joke lol. Ya'll weird chess snobs need to lighten up.
Not quite the same... asking if someone's going to have a drink with someone else isn't an inside joke. "How does the Knight move" literally advertises itself as an inside joke. At the Reykjavic press conference, the Soviets were asked "if they have any proof that Bobby Fischer exists." Everyone chuckled at it, and although the question was tongue-in-cheek, it still wasn't an inside joke. Inside jokes should not be made at press conferences.

because it's disrepectful
@@SpectacleChess Disrespectful? You know what's really disrespectful? Having the players go through an intensive interview after a 5-6 hour game In the most important chess tournament. Besides, how was this disrespectful? Andrea botez literally stated, 'who would have thought' in a sarcastic way and her whole statement was obviously a joke. Everyone who is going against Andrea Botez for what miniscule things she had actually done is a loner who has no friends. Formality? This is a press conference when the game was already over. If you enjoy chess then you'll keep playing it - but not cause of jokes or hoping for something new.
I mean magnus and ian both trolled each other by playing a "surprising" first move as a joke, so I don't think there's an issue in making a joke in the press conference, but ofc hikaru always likes to point a blaming finger on other successful streamers.
But let's be honest hikaru has a point...
It's a World Chess Championship afterall
(I didn't say Andrea is wrong )
Andrea and Alexandra Botez are both streamers that made it to around 2000 elo. Hikaru is a super GM who also streams but has dedicated his life to chess unlike the Botez sisters. No hate to them - they are great bringing in popularity to the game but this question was asked for content and not for seriousness and I agree with Hikaru's opinion on the joke...
Even the comments don't get it. Magnus teased Andrea in a 1-on-1 for not using the knight to take and said to her" Andrea, how does the knight move?" She was just doing a call-back to that funny moment they shared in a friendly game. It wasn't a "light-hearted" comment, it was an inside joke to tease him back. That's why he smiled--he got the joke.
Hikaru`s criticism is ridiculous. Very few events, and no people, are so important that there isn't any room for a joke. Not even the world championships in chess. As a matter of fact - it's about time it happened.

Hikaru is such a piece of shit honestly.
An interviewer once asked Vishy (after a defeat vs Magnus in the World Chess Championship) if he "really was thinking about a move all those minutes he spent". Vishy answered "no, I was thinking what I was having for dinner". So many of the "serious" questions are so bad, I can't understand why anyone would care.
I know. Most of the questions are awful. I remember one was “will you give Nepo some of your bday cake?” Like wtf, kind of question is that?
It was a better question than the question asked by another journalist: As you and Winston Churchill have the same birthday do you think you have something in common?'
One cheeky question every once in a while is good to relax the mood but I've seen that the "journalists" or the people who get the mic are having too much fun with the questions, since this is the world chess championship a bit more formality in the press conferences would be better IMO
And ask them what? "On move 35 computer x recommended a really complicated line that starts Bg4 and leads to a 0.6 advantage for white - did you miss this?" Like ffs if anything we just need to do away with these press conferences, theyre never needed
Probably the deluge of draws has (had! before today) taken away some of the grandiosity from the championship atmosphere.

I've gotta agree with Hikaru
I see where Hikaru is coming from, but it's just one question he needs to lighten up.
I wanna quickly sum up my perspective about this controversy (even if no one cares lmao, I just like sharing my insight on everything I'm way too outspoken)
First, I feel like the question itself was not too disrespectful, it was a joke, especially since Magnus actually knows how to take a joke, and since he actually has a sense of humor. Andrea asked beforehand to Magnus if it was an okay question to ask, and literally the two players are already extremely exhausted due to hours of chess, so why not just lighten the mood a little bit, not ask redundant and boring questions?
However, I understand why Hikaru said what he said, although I feel like he's taking this way too seriously. A big part of the chess community has become more modern due to twitch and a lot of chess streamers, and therefore there really doesn't have to be such a serious enforcement.
Lastly, I kinda felt like Andrea's statement before the question could be conceived as rude, when she said "great game today! Another draw... who would've guessed?". Both players really worked hard and endlessly to achieve that draw, and her tone makes it out like a draw made the game kind of meaningless and it was just in a really sarcastic manner. Anyways, again I know no one cares, but this is just my perspective.
Hikaru is exactly the kind of person Bobby Fischer was talking about as to why he didn't like chess
I'm into F1 and into Chess. I consider Magnus to be the Hamilton of chess with 1 main difference. He DOES have a sense of humor. Also, you won't see an angry Magnus when he receives a funny question, hell not even when he loses a championship, I'm certain about that.
it's better than asking Ian to compare magnus with a DOTA character or with a soccer player.

@@viveknamikaze761 no it doesn't. She wasn't actually expecting him to answer the question. It wasn't a real question. That's why you need context. It was a throw away question
@@phillytothemax Even though it was a different question than what everyone else asked, it was lame. The worst part is that most people there didnt understand the context as well. Even the starting line " Another draw, who would have guessed " sounded a bit too casual considering who he is, who she is and after all the effort he put in the game.
Magnus laughed at it, not a big deal lol
Oh look who's jelly
it's funny
and it's also funny to see all the people who thinks otherwise malding
If the Journalists covering chess events weren’t some how less socially capable then the players a question like this is fine. Some of the other questions that have been asked a conferences like this “while you were spending time on the move were you calculating variations” is just as dumb as “how does the knight move”
Yeah that should not happen. Asking about their fav color tho. THAT'S i think is in the top 3 most important questions. Maybe not top 3 but it's definitely up there
And Magnus used his knight the next day in the endgame to win game 6. Andrea inspired Magnus, the horsey was the key.
Damn, I was thinking bout Night moves by Bob Sieger. So thought it was a flirty question-Now, that wouldve been innapropiate, lol.
Yeah I can see both sides. However Magnus and the people sitting next to him, they looked bored So that question at least brought some flavor.
I didn't expect this from Hikaru... Just sad
I can playyy a fou-
