    UBI is better than free College. Because College is a waste of money anyway

    • @maxchienbinh
      @maxchienbinh 5 років тому +7

      i would like to disagree with that. college does help a lot of people but also left a lot in debt. but to say college is "completely" useless and waste of money is too harsh. I rather have option to go to college or spend money elsewhere to pursue different careers where college couldn't help

    • @MonetASMR
      @MonetASMR 5 років тому +2

      Yeah I totally agree with you
      Fionán. For the most part, I believe that college is so disengaging and ends up stifling people's creativity. Being creative is an essential tool for figuring out what you actually want to do for a living and, working towards that productive future.

    • @satyricon451
      @satyricon451 5 років тому +5

      Although I catch your point and consider UBI the better policy alternative compared to free college, I think it depends on how you look at college. If you look at it purely from a potential income perspective, then it's not the sure deal it once used to be. If you look at it from an intellectual enrichment perspective (a luxury these days it seems), then it may appear more as an investment.

      thanh nguyen Pretty much anything you’d go to college to learn as an undergrad, or even a master’s, you can now easily learn online in half the time. Sites like Khan Academy, Skillshare, Udemy, Udacity, Coursera, Edx, etc. are offering high-quality classes for a fraction of the cost of a college degree. All you need to do is take a gap year, learn a skillset, put together a portfolio along with your CV and you’re good to go. I personally know way more people getting jobs that way than people with degrees getting jobs right out of college (none). Unless you’re becoming a doctor or a lawyer, college really isn’t necessary nowadays.

    Cenk said Bernie Sanders has already sponsored legislation that supports a universal basic income. I have searched the Internet but cannot find anything to corroborate this. Does anyone have a link to confirm this clam? I did find a 2016 video where Bernie was asked if he supported UBI and he said it was an “ideal” and a good one but America was not ready for it. Other sources suggested Bernie was warm to the idea, but nothing mentioned any legislation being supported. I am also very warm to the UBI idea and the more I study it, the more I agree with Mr. Yang. Thx.

    You can clearly tell Cenk is backing Bernie, nothing wrong with that. But, UBI is Andrew Young thing, not Bernie. Bernie is smart enough to know that UBI is a much MUCH better strategy than raising minimum wage(more employment layoffs) or free college tuition(because college is NOT for everyone), that is why Bernie try to pass the bill. The beauty of UBI is that, it’s still NOT enough(12K a yr., is still below poverty line), you still have to work and if you’re too lazy to work, you will definitely going to have to blow all of that check in your local economy, which will benefit local business....
    UBI is the way to go, let the people decide how to spend the money not the government. For too long, the government has been getting billions on programs like the massive 750 Billions we spend on military defense, which btw, more than the next ten countries below US combined.

    UBI_3 What Do The BEST ECONOMISTS SAY about UBI? Top Nobel Prize Level Economists ENDORSE Universal Basic Income. UBI is endorsed by winners of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, commonly referred to as the “economics Nobel prize”. The economists were participating in the 6th Lindau meeting on economic sciences, which ran from 22nd to 26th of June this year in the picturesque town of Lindau, Germany.
    • Speaking in a panel discussion on the garden island of Mainau, Sir Chris Pissarides advocated universal basic income as a solution to the inequality that arises from both globalization and the rise of robots and AI.
    - “We should not try to deal with inequality by stopping these global processes, because these have the capacity to bring more prosperity to the world,” he said. “We should welcome expansion of trade and the opening up of India and Africa, and improve R&D to bring robotics into production. After all, if there aren’t enough jobs for us all to do, we can take more leisure. We are ageing, so we can feel comfortable that machines will do more of the work that human beings currently do.” He warned that a high proportion of jobs are at risk, including skilled jobs. The social and political problems arising from automation need a policy response that doesn’t impede the march of technology. “We don’t need a new Luddite movement”, he said. “There are better ways of dealing with it.”
    • In the same discussion, Daniel McFadden advocated unconditional income transfers to relieve poverty. As an example, he explained how introducing casinos in native American communities along the Rio Grande enabled them to deliver a basic income to the poor. “A lot of economists would think that was not a good thing to do,” he said. “But what happened was that child abuse dropped drastically, spousal abuse dropped drastically, crime dropped. Simply handing money to poor people was salutary. It really helped them. Being trapped in poverty, with the stress and insecurities associated with that, is progressively debilitating. Sometimes even the simplest kind of transfers can break the cycle.”
    • Separately, labor economist Peter Diamond advocated universal basic income in a conversation with Steve Schifferes of City University, London. Professor Diamond, who shared the 2010 Nobel with Sir Chris Pissarides, has become increasingly concerned about income and wealth inequality in the United States, and in particular, about rising child poverty and lack of social mobility. In a recent paper, he approvingly cites Tony Atkinson's book, Inequality:
    - He argues for a capital endowment, a minimum amount given to each person on reaching adulthood. And he also argues for an annual child benefit, which the United States doesn't have, but many European economies do, to help support the finances it takes to help children have better opportunities. It appears to me that these are two very interesting ideas.

    • Professor Diamond notes that Thomas Paine advocated using the estate tax to provide a dividend to young people turning 21, to help them launch their careers, and to provide benefits for sick, disabled and elderly.
    • But how to pay for all of this? Both Sir Chris Pissarides and Professor Diamond advocate higher taxes on high earnings. They also recommend wealth taxes, though they disagree about how these should work: Professor Diamond is strongly in favor of a well-functioning estate tax, while Sir Chris prefers capital gains taxes on property transactions, including family houses. Perhaps the strongest endorsement of wealth taxes came not come from these economists, however, but from their fellow Nobel memorial prize winner, James Heckman. Speaking on the inequality panel, Professor Heckman noted that the falling cost of capital was driving down wages. To correct this, he advocated shifting the burden of taxation to capital rather than labor.
    • Universal basic income is a radical policy that requires a radical funding solution. Reform of taxation must go hand in hand with any attempt to introduce it. For most of history, labor has been abundant and capital scarce, so it made sense to tax labor more highly than capital and demand that people work for their living. But as we enter an ageing world in which capital is abundant and labor relatively scarce, it may make sense to tax capital at least as highly as labor. And if the need for humans as workers and producers declines, as Sir Chris Pissarides predicts, then some form of capital redistribution will be needed to enable the many, not just the few, to take their leisure and enjoy it.

    Martin Luther King Jr. in advocating for a Guaranteed Basic Income (UBI) said,
    "We are likely to find that the problems of housing and education, instead of proceeding the elimination of poverty, will themselves be affected if poverty is first abolished. The poor transformed into purchasers will do a great deal on their own to alter housing decay. Negroes, who have a double disability, will have a greater effect on discrimination when they have the additional weapon of cash to use in their struggle.
    "Beyond these advantages, a host of positive psychological changes inevitably will result from widespread economic security. The dignity of the individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his own hands, when he has the assurance that his income is stable and certain, and when he knows that he has the means to seek self-improvement. Personal conflicts between husband, wife and children will diminish when the unjust measurement of human worth on a scale of dollars is eliminated."

    VAT is a CONSUMPTION tax paid by consumers, not business owners.
    How will taxing consumers to provide those same consumers with a universal basic income work exactly?
    Call it what it is.
    A YAT.
    Yang Added Tax.
    He plans to Yangk money out of the wallets of the rich and middle class and give it to the poor who will then spend it on consumer goods.
    UBI is a Universal Business Income.

      Even if you say it equates to a 10% sales tax, that net benefits any one person who spends less than 120k per year or 240k for a couple. That benefits most people.

      No. Taxes are theft. One group of people has a utopian vision so they tax everyone to make it happen?
      The government imposes a tax on your income (the fruits of your labor) but you have no control over what you get back in return. Will the government give you value in the form of roads and schools etc. Or will the government send billions of tax payer dollars to foreign countries?
      Either way you dont have a say in what is done with your money and if you refuse to pay your taxes the government will seize your assets to pay your tax liability and most likely throw you in jail.
      Federal government should be cut to the bone with a corresponding reduction in income tax.
      All state and local governments should be cut to the bone. Same reduction in taxes.
      Let people spend as much of their hard earned money the way they see fit.
      While we are at it. Get rid of the federal reserve bank. Its a scam.

      @@DaveWard-xc7vd individuals do not really own money, they use it and store it and colloqueally "own it" for the surcharge we call taxation. Thats why you cant burn it legally and why countries can limit how you use their currency.
      If you want to avoid that surcharge, don't use a country's markets or currency or financial infrastructure. However the taxation is theft meme is just nonsense that fails to reflect real world realities.

      So people "own" money for the purpose of paying taxes?
      There I was thinking that money and currency were just better ways of exchanging value for goods and services.
      Money sure beats carrying a chicken under each arm.

      If someone takes something you have without your permission it is theft.
      Someone steals your wallet or purse you call the cops.
      If politicians decide to impose a tax or raise an exsisting tax rate they are effectively taking your money without your permission which is theft.
