At -15 in a dry climate you can jump out to get firewood in a T-shirt and not get cold. At -23. You need at least a sweater gloves and a tuque. You can get frost bite in minutes. Your eyebrows and any fuzz or exposed hair freezes and stick together instantly. At -40 you don't dare go out without being fully dressed. It will kill you without precautions. Your breath hangs in front of you like a small cloud.

I went to Iceland and only had the outfit I was wearing and the one I packed. Key for me was bringing the appropriate clothes and layering (merino items are a must for me plus anything that is moisture wicking). When out on my tours I had a sports bra, tank top, base layer, fleece, shell, rain jacket. Two pairs of leggings on, merino wool socks, water resistant faux fur lined boots (this was the only boots I could find last minute). Beanie (not merino wool, wool gloves, and while out on one tour I picked up a merino wool buff. The coldest it got was -10 at the lagoon we went too people who seemed dressed warmer then me were freezing and everyone was trying to huddle in the coffee/gift shop tbh I was a little cold as -10 was a new for me but I was warmer then 75% of the people there.

Always have a scarf with you, and wrap it around your nose and mouth if windy. Frostbite can happen in 15 minutes and it is very painful! Cotton is the "death fabric", choose fleece instead. Have many layers so that you can take off some if youre getting heavy exercise and sweating. You don't want the sweat to get cold and stick to you. Don't get wasted if you have somewhere else you need to be for the night; people do get disoriented and freeze to death sometimes. Try not to drink too hard, and keep active as possible during the winter. Good luck!

Consumption of hot and/or sweet drinks will cause the body to lose energy since you will have to work harder to maintain a consistent body temperature. stick to room temperature or warm NOT HOT drinks if possible. Second, do NOT wear more than 4 layers as it will restrict the body's breathability making the likelihood of becoming cold greater since you can not circulate body heat properly.

I do the simple thing to adjust my body for cold. I do not throw on extra clothes. I just embrace the cold as it comes. By the time temperature falls in winter you will find me walking around in a T-shirt. Because we are animal and your body can adjust to the weather just like most animals. As cooler temperatures come your body makes you eat more and a special layer of fat start to build up to protect your body. In the spring the fat starts to leave.
