- The sale of church buildings has become commonplace in France - but a recent proposal to convert a church to a mosque has triggered a nationwide controversy. Church congregations in France are dwindling and the town of Vierzon is no exception. With a population of only 27,000, Vierzon is home to six Roman Catholic churches. To balance its books, the local diocese decided to sell one of the churches. But tempers flared after a Moroccan Muslim organization said it wanted to buy the church and convert it to a mosque. As a Roman Catholic, I am sad to see this...But I am not surprised. It does no good to disparage people of another faith. Such behaviour is wrong, and, more importantly, does not get to the root of the issue. Look around: Muslims are comparatively serious about their religion. They are devout, while many alleged Christians are not, in France and across Europe and North America. Accordingly, we have only ourselves to blame when our abandoned churches are bought by others. Were Christians attending services, as Muslims do, this could not happen.
I am also a Roman Catholic. People must revert back to their old ways.
Hello, fellow brother in Christ. Indeed, those who profess the faith in word only, must demonstrate it by returning to the pews of His Church. The indifference is killing us! Christianity is dying in the West, while other religions are rising. We have grown too comfortable in our worldly gains and see no more need for God. We sit and complain about the spread of foreign culture and identity loss, all the while merrily tossing ours to the bowls of unbelief. In my city many non-catholic churches were either demolished or turned into business premises because parishioner numbers were close to zero.

Too many hatred souls here about the conversion church to mosque. Please look at the perspective of design and engineering. It is easier to convert church to mosque compare to other commercial buildings.
1st, all Churches has big prayer hall, can serves the same purpose of worship to fit many people without the need to tearing up walls etc. 2nd, church design also has super high ceilings, can accommodate good ventilation for many people. (There are many more factors to justify the building conversion)
So is it cheaper and less money needed to renovate former church as mosque due to the factors given rather than finding other commercial building for mosque.
We need to be more open and practical. By buying the church, it's a win-win situation. The local church adminstration can save money from maintaining many church buildings while the Muslim can practising their religion in more comfortable environment. It's nothing to do with Islam is replacing Christianity etc...it's all about practicality of the building use to the users...as simple as that.
The problem is give a hand and then the full arm is at stake.

Religions have the value of providing a common core bonding moral compass for a peoples. That is a good thing. It validates for us - our innate values. As a Muslim I wouldn't want a mosque to be converted into a church, so I get why they feel that way. But we also have no problem in praying in a former church as long as the community would allow it.
