  • I took an early morning walk down Sukhumvit Soi 11 in Bangkok, Thailand. This busy street has it all. Plenty of places to eat and party. Nice condos and beautiful hotels.
    Here's a few links for my favorite credit cards. I try to check the links often, but let me know if there is a problem. If they change the offer on the card, I may need to update the link. Full disclosure, I get a few airline miles for referring a new customer. You should get the same public offer at no additional cost. Thank you very much.

    Wow, wasn’t expecting to see a Bar Louie over there. We used to have a bunch of them in Chicago but most of them closed. Good to see they’re still hanging on. aloft is actually a pretty reasonably priced hotel chain. Have not had the chance to stop by that one. Thanks for another great video Joe.

    Perfect timing! Checking in at Soi 15 tomorrow, Samala hotel. And again you bring back memories. I visited the Havanna social back in 2018, I think? I do not remember an entrance fee or a dress code but we got ourselves a hat at the entrance to wear. Pretty cool place, a Speakeasy or secret bar if you will. You had to enter the correct code on the telephone outside in the alley to get in, even if that was mostly for show. Thanks for another great video and let me know if you are up for a beer or two!

    Aloft is a Marriott branded property. I thought about staying there once for the location but ended up opting for the Athenee. One thing about Bangkok that I’ve concluded is its really not necessary to pay 5* American branded pricing when there are so many local options for half the cost and just as nice. I always wanted to rent on the river next to Icom but the more I watch you I think somewhere between soi 20-40 might just be better.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  Місяць тому

      Yes, if paying cash local is the way to go. I go to Krabi soon. I'm staying at a beautiful place that's $38 US with breakfast. Normal price is $160, but low season, Agoda coupon, etc.. I talk often about western hotels, because I've had literally millions of hotel and airline miles over the years.
      The Hyatt Place on Soi 22 used to be a category one property. That's when it was 1 year old with a free amazing breakfast. You could get one credit card and stay there 10 days. Or extend the stay and spend $50 a night. It was a no-brainer. Today the Holiday Inn Express is almost a give-away. I stay for about $35. After a 4 day stay, I've earned double points and have a free night. Those miles add up fast. When I book an expensive property in say Hong Kong, every fifth night is free.
      So where I agree, local is usually best, I'm always going to be a miles guy. In a place like Krabi, the western options are $150. I'll save my points for Tokyo or New York City. Hotel.com has a decent get the 10th night free. But, Agoda seems to beat the price every time. The Agoda cash is weak, but I usually take the 5% or 8% coupon instead.
      If you want to stay by the river, go give that a try. Thonburi is where many expats settle down in Bangkok. I'm still out running around 4 or 5 nights a week. This area of Sukhumvit has more to offer a nite-owl.

    • @BirdDog.
      @BirdDog. Місяць тому

      @@EagerExpat I never used agoda but everyone talks about it. I’m Marriott platinum but I may not hit 50 nights this year. I don’t feel staying loyal to one brand is really worth it anymore. But like you said when it come time for a stay in Tokyo or HKG they sure nice to have.

    I know that Soi 11 is far from Vegas but why does it get so much hype? Seems to be like a street with a bunch of Hillary’s, Indian restaurants and a few night clubs and rooftop bars. What are other reasons for visiting this Soi? Sidewalk looks super narrow so can’t imagine going down there when its packed with people

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  Місяць тому

      There are way more than a few. I'd guess closer to 50 bars and nightclubs. Maybe 10 roof bars. It gets so much hype because it's the spot where many locals like to party. There must be a 100 places to eat. As far as busy sidewalks, every sidewalk in Bangkok is busy. There are 16 million people in the area. I was there on New Years Eve a few years back. There must have been 100,000 people all down the street. It was great. Then again, some people like an empty street. Good luck with that in BKK.
