- Is 1940s Bearing Grease still good? 75-year old Conoco grease tested for performance. Compared to MAG 1 conventional lithium grease. Both greases tested for water resistance, heat tolerance, corrosion resistance, and extreme pressure lubricant properties. I'll test full synthetic performance grease in future videos. I purchased both greases tested.

Video suggestion: Test engine break in methods (take it easy vs motoman break in method). Get 2 identical mower engines and compare the performance and fuel efficiency after break in.
Thanks for the video idea.
The best way to break in a diesel on tractor is load it at 25% for an hour then 50%, 75, and 100% each for an hour. I’ve heard that works good
@@gabehintzsche2064 You heard but didnt test. How were the reference tractors broken in and how did they manage to compare them again after 5000 hours in a fair way? People who make such claims have a lot to explain.
A lot of messages on here, I hope this reaches you. Imagine you doing a test on fishing lines and their strength before they break. 10lb. 20lb. 30lb. Wow! That would be a HUGE help, especially when fishing season is coming up.
Thanks for the video idea.
Fishing line is only as good as the pole it's used on. In my experience, the pole will break before the line does.
@@SergeantExtreme, that depends on the angle of the pole. But even with a broken pole, you can still pull the fish in - not so much with a broken line.
Definitely something I would test
Their strength is right in the name, a 10lbs line is tested to hold 10lbs before breaking, a 20lbs line 20lbs, and so on
You know what tests are performed in industry, you know what results to expect, you know why things produce the result they do, and you know exactly what to look for. Some things definitely were made better in the past, but I had no doubt that modern grease would be better. It would have been interesting to see these two alongside the cheapest lithium grease on the market today.
The 75-year-old grease could have also decomposed over time, changing its chemical structure.
Thanks for the feedback.
It started decomposing when the brontosaurus died, lol.

Considering its age, and made in wartime, I think under the circumstance the Conoco did very well.
Yes, I agree!
@@ProjectFarm I am left to wonder if the grease that was sitting in the can for 75 years still has the same properties it would have had 75 years ago when it was new. Not many products can be expected to have quite that long of a shelf life.
I'd suggest that modern lubricants would have very positive results as far as machine performance back then.
When I do a repair on my 20-30 year old motorcycles I always find old grease which is brittle and hard as a rock. Considering the conoco grease is more than double the age, it did very very good.
@@Chris-yy7qc The Conoco grease in this video was completely sealed since it was packaged, this plays a large role in preserving the properties of the grease. I would bet it's performance has not degraded significantly since it's production.
You brought back some great memories for me. My first job was with an old moldy greasy mechanic. He smelled, was slimy, kept his teeth in his dirty right pocket, and I was afraid he would stick to me if we ever came close enough to bump bodies. I've heard the old "ain't made like they used to be" my whole life and after tearing into several houses built in the early 20th century, that's a good thing.
Things are different now but they're not necessarily worse. What's happened is that everything is engineered for cost now with superior materials (except for today's lumber, it's terrible) rather than just being over built with inferior materials.
Great point!
How about overbuilt with the new materials? That's the way to go.
It's not that things were built better in the old days, it's the fact they designed products with durability in mind.
Now a days products are designed to only needs to last so long before the consumer needs to buy the product again, built-in obsolescence.
This shouldn't be the price we pay for better technology.

Hey, finally a topic I can share my knowledge on!
But first of all, thanks for your continuous testing of different products, I really like the videos.
I have been working for the last 7 years in two companies that produce and develop lubricating grease, among other things.
The overall better performance of modern grease was no surprise to me, as the development progress of additives over the last 50 years has been enormous.
About the Lubricity Tester: The old grease had a clear disadvantage, as the modern grease was able to keep friction and thus wear much lower due to its better AW-EP (anti-wear - extreme pressure) additives.
I am personally still interested in the corrosion behaviour of the greases in relation to copper sheet (DIN EN ISO 2160, ASTM D 130), the NLGI class of vintage grease, oil separation (DIN 51817, ASTM D 1742) and the behaviour in relation to water according to DIN 51807-1.
