What I see is the Raiders adding QB depth for good market value. Minshew was arguably the 3rd best QB in free agency and the Raiders only had AOC on the roster. Bring one of the 2nd tier rookie qbs in the draft and have a willing mentor in Minshew makes sense. I can still see the Raiders trading up for QB in the draft. At that point you have 3 capable starters and one of the better QB rooms out there.

1 of the reasons the Colts did as well as they did last year was cause Minshew did a great job of leading the team. You'll find quote after quote from lotta players stating how much of a blessing Gardner was to the team. No it's not a tangible stat but he brings higher level intangibles. @@man-zm3lj
DJ Chark's lone 1,000 yard season was with Minshew in 2019. His best year ever.
Guys keep in mid Minshew was 3rd in completed passes over 40 yards in the entire NFL. He was also 3rd in NFL in completed passes over 50 yards. He also played less than the qb's ahead of him. You are both smart enough to realize the Colts had 1 of the worst receiving groups in the entire NFL. Fun Fact: When Eagles played Cowboys in 2022 Minshew threw for 355 yards AT Dallas. It was a back and forth game. That 355 number was the most passing yards vs Cowboys at their stadium since 2017. Let that sink in.
He was 20th in the league in completions 20+ yards downfield, with 20. And 26th in percent of his attempts that traveled 20+ yards, at 10.4%
In 2022 Minshew started 2 games and had 11 passes over 20 yards vs 2 of the best pass D's in the NFL - Saints and Cowboys. He had 20 (as you mentioned) this past year. Think he would have surpassed the 20 mark in 2023 if he had those Eagles receivers... AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, and Goedert? I do. How would you grade Pierce as a receiver? He's bottom of the barrel in every metric when it comes to separating and yac. He also played the most snaps on the team in the passing game. He doesn't get open. He's slow and clunky. He;s a backup. Downs set a Colts franchise record with 68 receptions as a rookie. Minshew threw to him cause he knows how to get open. Where would you rank their receiving group as a whole? WR's, tight ends, and receiving backs? IMO they are bottom of the barrel. Pittman is very solid but not elite. If any of their TE's were good they would not play 4 of them and they still all averaged well over double digits in yards per reception. In fact their TE's all rank in the top 20 in the entire NFL in yards per reception. If you play fantasy football were any of those tight ends on a fantasy team.? No stand outs - bunch of Jags. Ballard failed to extend Pitt after year 3. Now it cost them more $$$. Who the heck did Ballard think AR was gonna throw to in 2024? How can you not extend Pitt sooner? Steichen had to manufacture an offense with his limited options at receiver. Zach Moss never caught a lot of balls in his career and JT missed a lot of time. They checked down very little in 2023. Minshew's rookie year he had 43 passes over 20 yards and the amount of pass attempts in 2019 & 2023 are almost identical? That 2019 Jags team had speed at receiver. Look at those 2019 Jags receiver stats and look at their individual careers. They all had their best year with Minshew at QB. Look at DJ Chark in 2019 and his other years. Check out the DEEP BALL PROJECT from the 2019 season. See where Minshew ranked (and he was a rookie.) You'll be shocked.
EXcerpt from an article before the Raven's game this past year: Since his NFL debut in 2019, Minshew owns the 11th-highest PFF passing grade against the blitz (82.5) in the NFL. He's made "big time throws" - a stat PFF tracks - on 7 percent of his dropbacks against the blitz, the second-highest rate among quarterbacks with at least 200 dropbacks. His average of 8.0 yards per pass attempt vs. blitzes is tied for 10th with Jalen Hurts, and it's not necessarily because he taken short completions - Minshew's average depth of target is third-highest (9.5 yards) in the same span, tied with Buffalo's Josh Allen. And he's put the ball into harm's way with a "turnover-worthy play" on just 2.4 percent of his plays against the blitz, tied with the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes for 13th-lowest; the 19 sacks he's taken are seventh-lowest.
The short version: Minshew has a history of handling blitzes well.
You guys do great work. I really enjoy your stuff. With that said, in order to truly understand Minshew you have to dig. His ability to drive the ball is his weak spot. His deep ball is 1 of his strengths. No one is gonna have much success throwing to the Colts group this year. If they didn't tag Pitt and they lost him, the Colts would not win 5 games in 2024. Some people don't understand why the Raiders signed Minshew to this contract. I think they are looking at some of the same things I am. He's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

All I had was the eye-test and I thought Minshew played pretty well for a place-holder the Raiders will draft a QB in the first couple of rounds. This is actually a pretty good QB class even Milton and Rattler have some juice I just don't like Nix.@@mikeronald3812

There are differences between Fantasy and real football. Sometimes I feel like we, as a fantasy community, see players more through the fantasy lens, than what they actually are in real football. Justin Fields is a very interesting player for Fantasy because of his rushing upside, but imo has never been a consistent great QB. In real football the gap between Fields and Minshew is not that big, it is more a difference in their style (pocket QB vs. dual threat). Fields would have been a lot more expensive, but I doubt he would have let the Raiders to a lot more success.

These guys put out great stuff and they are very knowledgeable. I have been disagreeing with their assessment of MInshew however. I know Minshew's game very well. Unfortunately Minshew Mania and his antics are his brand and people have a hard time seeing through that. If anyone really wants to get to the bottom of who he really is they have to dig. He is limited in some ways but he makes up for a lot with other things he does that go very unnoticed. If anyone wants to watch Minshew ball out watch the Eagles vs Dallas game on 12/25/2022. I am not saying he is the 2nd coming of Mahomes but I will say he's a lot better than people give him credit for. I'll bet very few people know he had zero D1 offers coming out of HS. He was a 2 star recruit. Troy U, then community college, then East Carolina. Then Nick Saban called him to be the backup at Alabama to back up Tua/Hurts. Then Leech called. He plaved 5th in the Heisman that year. His story is crazy.

Most of the Raider Nation loves O'Connell. The kid did well in 2023. But, you are right that Minshew is overall a better Quarterback. Minshew will be the Starter in 2024. I hope O'Connell can continue to develop and learn from Minshew.

They’re blowing fields
Luke Getsy is the part you guys are missing. Luke Getsy's offense is almost entirely short yardage. So this signing makes perfect sense if you know that. As a bears fan I know this he installed the same shit offense two years in a row and I can't tell you how many bubble screens and quick outs I have seen.

@@Random00Crap Its an offense that is the complete opposite of everything that Justin Fields is good at so no I don't think this was his solution to helping Justin. It was the exact same offense when Fields was out with injury for 4 games too. He wants a quick read short check down type QB that occasionally goes deep. They changed the offense mid season the last two years to adjust it to Justin's skills a little bit. Moreso in the first year but last year it was sporadic depending on the matchup.

Luke Getsy needed to bring in a QB who knows the West Coast Offense he runs, Gardner played in the WC offense in Jacksonville.
Fields struggled to run the WC under Getsy, so much so, they abandoned it for some hybrid that let Justin run.
Bagent was better at running Getsy’s offense, he just doesn’t have the physical talent of Fields.
I also believe the Raiders really want to draft a QB this season, which sets Gardner up as a high paid part of the season starter.
Justin Fields would be a “progress stopper” for the Rookie.
Y’all are underestimating Minshew.
Colts consistently put up 20 points or more in many games last years. Top 10 in NFL in scoring. All while their D gave up the most points in the entire AFC. Colts were 9-6 when Minshew started or played most of the game. Minshew does a lot for things that go unnoticed. Look at his sack yards for loss per sack, how many times he drew defenses offsides with his hard count (1 of the best hard counts in the NFL,) pass interference calls. Free plays, etc... The little things add up.
It's dumb to say the Raiders "chose" Gardner over Justin Fields. Gardner is a FA and they wud have to trade for Justin when they really need their draft picks. If they have any chance of trading up to get a qb they need whatever picks they might be able to trade and Gardner has shown he can be a great backup for a young qb. Even if they don't take a qb(and I think the chance for that is low cuz there are 4 qbs i the pool that are going to be drafted high( I only think 3 of them have elite traits) but one they like cud fall enough for them to take or Gardner will start next year and they will try to get a qb then. I like Fields but Getsy has shown he isnt good at calling plays for anything other than a dropback passer so I want Fields to go somewhere where they can use him right.
Last year Steichen could have signed a lot of different guys to backup AR. He wanted Minshew. Why? He knows what's up. Of all the things Steichen did last year I think the Colts front office was most impressed with Steichen's belief coming true regarding Minshew. They were expected to win 5 games at most last year.

O'Connell had us within 4 points of the playoffs last season and he finished the season 5-4 as the starter. That makes Minshew excellent insurance and thats what kind of contract we gave him. Minshew played for Mike Leach himself and adds that element to the game.

Great move he has never went into a season as the starter. However he has been above average when having to come in as a back up. Guy has a lot of upside yes he makes some bad decisions but if you can work on him to get past that he should be good. He also has never ever had a WR corp like he has with the Raiders.

Christian Wilkins was chosen by Antonio Pierce and Gardner Minshew was chosen by Getsy. It seems the Raiders are choosing Players in "Committee" fashion. Of course, this is my speculation. I think that all sides are in agreement for the most part, but these Players in particular fit the schemes that certain Coaches have. I think the Starter in the Quarterback position will be Minshew.

The Raiders chose a QB that has 59 TD/ 24 INT and a 90 rating, over a RB with a QB designation that can’t read defenses, can’t throw, and has some of the all time worst pocket awareness. Minshew did more in 2 seasons on a far worse Jags team than Fields has ever endured with the Bears in 3 seasons. Fields is a terrible QB. It’s sad how many people just run with biased media talking points. Fields has been a media pet, media golden boy, media darling, with every excuse known to man thrown his way as a reason to why he’s garbage.

I don't think AP, Telesco and Getsy are working under the same rules. Telesco won't let AP mortage the farm for Daniels so this is a back-up solution. Raiders will trade up and draft a QB. AP won't get that much time as a head coach if they fail so I don't see him riding with Minshew. Raiders offense is in good hands with Adams, Meyers, Mayer and White plus Tre Tucker. They need a right tackle and a CB. If Patriots draft JJ Mccarty and Daniels is still on the board they will trade up.

Good stuff guys, but I disagree. Yes, Fields has incredible untapped potential. But that has been his career story and going after him feels like it would be a reach for the Raiders.
AOC wasn’t bad for a rookie and should improve. Minshew is an upgrade over Jimmy. If Pierce continues to solidify their defense and they can sort out the rest of their non-QB offensive situation out so they can actually run the ball and execute play action effectively at the _beginning_ of the season, it isn’t unreasonable to think they could win 2 or 3 more games and be in playoff territory.
The Raiders were looking at, more or less, a bridge qb - someone that can start now but also teach AOC & whoever they draft (my guess is Penix in rnd 2 or 3) and fits in nicely in the locker room… Russ, Cousins & Fields are not that… Minshew knows what his role is - start now, teach young qb & be the backup next year and he’s fine with that (obv)…

If a choach being able to make success with Gardneer, the only way that’s a bad point like you say it is, is if you have a bad coach!
It doesn’t matter how good the QB is if the coach sucks!
So if the coach is good, and he can “manufacture” the wins then why is that a bad thing?
Context matters. He's never been brought in with the intention of being the guy before. Build a team and give the guy a real shot. He's had success in the NFL, and in most cases, it was on short notice. Worst case scenario, Minshew is a cheap bridge QB that can help AOC and another potential rookie.
Minshew will end up being a Qb2 signing. Even at $15M. Fields would be a huge mistake to trade for by the Raiders. Trust me as an OC and Qb coach at the collegiate level….Fields just makes way too many mediocre mistakes.
Getsy’s offense was just so limited with Fields. Watch the film and compare it to Tyson Bagent. The personnel packages, the balance of the Offense. The quick game. Fields had to be in mostly 11 personnel and his reads were deep, to flat to run. His sack % never went below 10%. Fields never would change pass protections….the running game was actually more productive under Bagent. Sack % decreased from 12% by Fields to 3.4% under Bagent.
Getsy loves the quick game with empty sets mixed with gap and zone run schemes.
Fields struggled majorly with the quick game.
Minshew and Aidan both do just fine in the quick game. I recognize neither of these Qbs r top tier Qbs. But I much rather have them than role with Fields.

Fields is going to want at least 35 million a year, for 4+ years, based on what Fields has shown that would be crazy. Minshew will get them by as they develop another QB without bottoming out and getting pierce fired. Fields is going to have a wake up call..
Luke Getsy’s system wasn’t good for Justin Fields. He tried to put Fields into what they’ve described will be for Gardner. It’s dink & dunk ball control with a running game. There’s a QB coach, who describe some details that would work with a veteran, but not with a young quarterback, with some of the plays. Getsy might be best with veteran QBs rather than developing QBs like Fields considering he’s already been fired from Chicago trying to do that. Was glad to see the Raiders get Christian Wilkins today. AP has a vision for defense. But yes, I would rather see Justin Fields run a six back offense & it would be exciting & he would be good at it. Getsy doesn’t run that or won’t.

This is clearly a Plan B option for the Raiders. He is a more than competent backup to whoever they draft. This is simple-minded analysis, but at least they admit they are “confused” by the move. If Fields has so much upside, why has every team passed on him. Only a fool would believe this is the final QB move for the Raiders. I may need to go elsewhere for competent analysis.

I think this is poor analysis. He’s being brought in to compete and bring flexibility to the Raiders at QB. Now we can trade up if Daniels falls, or trade back/ grab a tier 2 guy (JJ, Nix, Penix) in late round 1 or round 2. Minshew can be a bridge QB too. And, who else was out there- Cousins fleeced the Falcons, Fields/Getsey isn’t a good combo.
I really think the Raiders are going to get a qb in this draft. That's why they got Minshew to compete with him. Gardner has run before he can do enough to get out of pressure. They clearly have not seen enough of Minshew play. If they got Justin Fields then he would be the main qb and they would not take one in the draft. So I don't think Fields fits in their scheme or obviously they would have picked him up. I do not think Fields has had a good opportunity with the Bears. Their offensive line is terrible.
No one is trading for Adams after this year when his money goes way up I would trade him while he still has value we are not winning a SB this year anyhow.

Dude. The raiders are still drafting a QB. Minshew is an insurance policy to compete with Aiden. By having an adequate at least back up they aren't hamstringed to have to draft. Field is done. Minshew is a backup/bridge, 2 years 15 million guaranteed with the potential to get up to 25 million with meeting incentives. In reality he's only making 7.5 annually, that's a backup salary. I can almost guarantee they draft a first or 2nd round QB. Also Fields makes it to where you have to commit to him as your starter and he's sucked. We need a rook.

O'Connell is better than Minshew. O'Connell is better than the QB's in the draft. He can actually read a defense pretty well. Fields couldn't read a cereal box back when they had less preservatives no one could pronounce. QB isn't the Raiders problem, OL DL are the main problems. Adams is another problem. Think on this. The Raiders defense is about to be a monster and the draft hasn’t come yet. If the Raiders could beat the Chiefs with Aiden O’Connell barely throwing the ball. What do think they will do with Gardner Minshew tossing burners down field to Davante and Jakobi? Point is, the Raiders are going defense and offensive line. You can win a championship with a team like this. They had the Chiefs flustered and they will be even better next season.
