    About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

Great job with repairing the stone wall. Maybe the gates would benefit from a coat of anti-rust treatment and then a coat of anti-rust paint on those gates. Look at how much you improved the staircase railings by giving them a lick of paint. It boggles the mind how hard you have all worked & how much you cooperate & work as a team. I really enjoy seeing Jonathan and Little dog Patrick! ❤️❗️❗️👍👍

I think you are right. The stone with the metal half moon was buried with the metal half moon exposed & used as the backer to the inside of the bottom of the gate so the gate wouldn't accidentally be pushed too far inward which could compromise the gate itself & the hinges...Always impressed with your families teamwork.

I was watching some prior shows with Ash on them and realized he is just the sweetest and hard working person and his light just shines through every segment he is in. Ash and Terry are an amazing couple. Watching how your love story manifested such a beautiful dream, how it draws in others to participate in it is so refreshing in these tense times in the world. You all are an escape to a dream of a more simple loving time. Also you all remind me that reality is the life you create and it is worth all the hard work and dedication one can muster. I haven’t seen Tony on the show for awhile but hope there will be future segments of his appearance. Jonathan seems to have adjusted well and thriving in his new home. Your show is by far my favorite these days. God bless you all!

Are there drought resistant hostas? I was thinking that with the lavender that Terry mentioned, perhaps dusty miller or sea drifts both of which would compliment the lavenders for height and flower colour plus are very drought resistant.

I don't think hostas are very drought tolerant. I have many - some are good in part sun but definitely need to be well watered. Rhododendron might be good there once established. It's getting them established that may be the issue.

@@ashleywaters7198 I had a feeling that you were doing the running when I just saw glimpses of you.
I'm really glad to hear that you're going to wait to begin planting. Since you already have a plan, the pathways, irrigation system, water features and statuary can all start as soon as possible. That would be enough to keep even your gang busy until fall, when you can just drop plants into the ground and let nature run its course.
I'm aware that you want to use plants that are drought tolerant and will thrive in your climate, but a drip irrigation system would be advisable to get you through lengthy dry conditions. It's worth the investment in saved plants. I lost an established Serbian spruce because I assumed it would make it through a dry spell. I wept real tears when it died.
A walled garden of your size would be extremely difficult to water efficiently without irrigation. Beside running hoses around your parterre will damage too many plants. As it is, you'll probably always have to do some hand watering of new plantings, etc. You'll need faucets located strategically around the garden for filling water features, hand watering, spraying down walkways, etc.
I'd suggest running the water lines under the pathways.
Does the ground freeze there during winter? Do you have a frost line to consider?

Dear Terry, Tracy, Ash and Jonathan, you have made this dilapidated, sad, overgrown entry a beautiful place to come and go from. You are the hardest working family ever and as a result you have developed so many skills. The walls are stunning and the border walls are perfect. Even though you never planned on doing this area at this time, makes this accomplishment that much greater. I’m so happy for you!!!! Patrick gets right in there while keeping his eye out for the mice! So cute!! xx

suggest you put the stone you found with the piece of steel in the middle of the drive to support the end of the gates. Now they are hanging then they are supported.

What a great job!! I have a large garden on the Isle of Skye and I pick up tips as I watch you all learn as you go, building, planting, renovating, so thank you!!! I am going to attempt to build my own small wall up the driveway. It is so overgrown. Exciting times! 💜

The "little service entrance" looks quite stately. Love the round walls that you created and that emphasize the gate so nicely. Aliums and Lavender will suit well too.

HI Tracy, Terry & Ash, Another big job done and checked off the ever growing list of work to bring the Chateau back to life. Your guys are brilliant, as they say but Tracy always deserves honorable mention simply because she can usually run circles around the guys. Keep up the wonderful restoration on the Chateau. How far you have come and the skills you have developed. It was exciting when the pin was put back and the gate worked! You will not regret rebuilding the pillar/wall. This area is so nice with lots of shade.

Lovely new entrance to Chateau grounds. Good idea for ferns outside gates near road. A few Daffodils along that wall at road edge would be super too with wall as backdrop. You will love having that new entrance for family parking. Great work effort for all in the team. Keep it up! For walled garden, it might be nice to get hardscaping organized well before planting, then you can tackle planting by sectors enclosed by pathways. One sector at at time, with intensive watering of new plantings for that sector, for initial week after , before reduced watering. Only after that sector has settled in, begin working on next sector for new planting, then pamper for first week or two with extra watering to establish, and so on.... other wise you will go 'NUTS" racing about with intensive watering to settle in that massive entire formal garden daily.... which will give you no time for anything else and perhaps water shortages from your well. If you know some of the plants you want to plant in the formal garden already, to save money you could buy a few then using cuttings propagate additional plants to reduce cost, or start seeds for same purpose.

Phenomenal job on the wall and gate! Excited to see when it’s all pointed and finished. There may have been just a single row of stone right under the gate when it’s in its closed form for all those large stones you pointed out. Just a guess.

Absolutely right and the stone with the half moon metal piece is in the center to hold the middle frame of the gate so it stays straight and in line. Sorry, you will have to dig and fit those large stones in the dirt but you will be pleased with the result

If you find large stones with the iron imbedded loops...those are for tying up horses. These were both placed outside and inside the gate area. Love the work your family is doing....hard work, but very rewarding.

I think it's good that you can't plant anything right now, so you can focus on getting all the pointing of walls done while the landscape is bare of plants. I'm loving the transformation of the back entrance, I hope you'll throw a coat of paint on those gates, and maybe add some carriage lights. And of course I look forward to seeing those walls finished, it's already looking so much better, it's going to be incredible when the walls are done and everything looks nice and cohesive.

Terry, you HAVE become an expert builder of rock walls! You and Tracey should be so proud of yourselves for all the backbreaking work with the stone walls around the Chateau grounds. And not forgetting Jonathan who is becoming quite a jack of all trades around the place and a great helper. I do get worried seeing Lord Patrick running around close to machinery operating and wonder if you can buy doggie Hi Vis vests ‘cause his colour is almost camouflage against the earth tones.?😅❤️😊

Fantastic effort by all on the gates and entryway. Terry, I think you may be correct in your assumptions that the big stone with the iron separator went between the two gates, which would mean there probably was a series of cobbles at least across the gate closure. By the thickness of that stone, you would need to dig at least another 8-10 inches down to restore it in place and to add the course of cobbles on either side. Since you don't have all of the pieces or the extra time, laying down gravel is the easiest and fastest solution and will allow you to move on to more pressing issues. The "gate gardens" are going to add more beauty and serenity to the area, and I look forward to seeing them in bloom one day.
