  • Leave a tip! bit.ly/3HTzq5r | I'm shocked at what this budget rifle package can do. This Savage Axis II XP, topped with an El Cheapo Nikon scope, beat two other rifles costing over 4x as much. It connected with a man sized silhouette target not once, not twice, but three times at 1,000 yards! Outstanding quality confirmed!

    Nope, doesn't surprise me at all. I've seen Savage bolts as the basis for 1000-yard budget guns a lot. Savage seems to have found a sweet spot. Make the things that matter most just good enough ( adjustable trigger, barrel, and bedding ) and don't waste money on other things. And as you said, barrel-to-ammo match is king. It's always nice to get a barrel that likes cheap ammo.
    I had no idea they'd dropped in price so much. That very model is listed at $320 as of today.

    When Savage first introduced the axis line originally called the edge, I got one in 308. It was a sub moa gun. I just bought my son the newest model basic axis in 243, I have found myself hunting with it more than my others. I'm wanting to try the 6.5 out myself, I'm wanting the 110 tactical but I know the axis line will do all I need.

    I love going back to this video again! I left my exact same axis rifle stock for about a year and loved shooting with my 150gr hand loads. I decided to throw in a match bull barrel and did some trigger work. I also got a Boyd varmint stock on it and this turkey is my most accurate rifle. Actually the most accurate rifle I've ever shot! That action is sloppy feeling as it gets and I am just astonished! It has been a really fun experiment. Thanks for the cool video!

    I'm just about 45 years old and the phenomenon of people spending lots of time/effort and/or money on modifications and accessories just to get Remingtons, Rugers, Winchesters, etc., to shoot as accurately as a cheap Savage usually does straight out of the box, has been going on since before I was born. Savage's centerfire bolt-action rifles have been inexpensive tack-drivers for ages. The theory is that it has something to do with their barrel nut method of attaching the barrel to the receiver, which eliminates the uneven stresses / pressure points you can get when threading a barrel directly into the receiver. There's a similar theory for the Dan Wesson revolvers with interchangeable barrels, which were (are?) very popular among long-range silhouette target shooting competitors.
    I've always wondered why people choose to buy other brands of centerfire bolt-action rifles when they are more expensive and probably not as accurate as a Savage. I guess they consider looks to be more important than accuracy (a lot of people think Savages, their barrel nuts in particular, are ugly), or they are somehow unaware of how accurate Savages typically are.

    I have the even cheaper standard Savage Axis in .308 and I still think the trigger is excellent (very light, very little take-up, and a very crisp release). I've only shot mine to 100 yards as its new, but so far I'm incredibly impressed with it. Mine is very finicky with ammo however. For example old surplus German 7.62x51 NATO ammo got stuck in the chamber after firing and I had one Winchester Super-X round fail to go into battery as it must have been just slightly out of spec. All of the rest of the ammo in that box worked fine. But I guess that is a good thing as it means that the tolerances on the Savage Axis are extremely tight (although oddly enough it feeds Tula steel case ammo just fine with only slightly sticky extractions). I haven't tried heavier grain match grade ammo, but PMC Bronze .308 ammo got me around 1.2 MOA which I was thrilled about. I have it paired with a cheap Vortex Vanquish BDC optic (amazing budget scope) and I am just very very happy with what is my first bolt gun. It blows my mind how accurate of a rifle you can buy these days under $500. It's my most boring looking firearm but has quickly become one of my favorites to shoot. With cheap steel cased ammo, it's also incredibly fun for doing rapid off-hand shooting on close range targets to practice for hunting hogs. I was genuinely surprised how fast I could aquire the target and nail it. What really blew my mind however asides from its accuracy, was how little felt recoil it had. It actually has less felt-recoil than my 7.62x39mm SKS rifle. I wasn't expecting that.
    The only downside is that even steel cased ammo in .308 isn't cheap, so I may buy a .223 version of this rifle just for fun shooting using a less expensive caliber that can still reach out to 500 yards easily. On the other hand, I've been eyeing at Academy Sports & Outdoors the Savage Axis 2 SR in 6.5 creedmoore. This is a 18.5" bull barrel version and it's only $399. I'm not sure however how much of a velocity hit I would get with the shorter 18" barrel, but at that price, it's awfully tempting. I'm surprised that there are no reviews of the SR short bull-barreled variants of the Axis2 on youtube. :(

    In the late 1990s 4 of us decided we would travel from eastern Kentucky to the Dakotas to hunt prairie dogs. I bought a Remington 700V in .223. Two others bought Ruger varmint rifles in .223. The last person bought a Savage in .223. We all spent months working up the best handloads for our rifles. We all found the sweet spot. The odd thing was the Savage was the only rifle that could shoot ANY of the rounds with good accuracy! My Remington hated the other rounds. The Rugers hated the other rounds. The Savage could still hold .75 MOA with rounds not optimized for it. Now, one of the Rugers ended up with the absolute best accuracy out of the bunch but the Savage was best when considering all of the different loadings. Ugly but great rifles.

    I bought this exact rifle 6 months ago solely because of this video. The Bushnell scope that came on it sucks. The reticle lines are too fat for precision distance work. Try to get one that doesn't have a scope for anyone interested in this rifle. I'm in the process of installing a new scope. Bought an Athlon Optics, Argos BTR, Riflescope, 6-24 x 50 First Focal Plane (FFP) 30 mm Tube, Illuminated APMR MIL Reticle. It cost slightly more than the gun after buying new scope rings and a 20 MOA picatinny rail. I'm going to try that out in a week or two at 1000 yards and see what I can accomplish.

    I bought the Axis 2 stainless steel 6.5 Creedmoor (no scope or scope mount) at Walmart for $296 with $50 Savage rebate. I also bought the only ammo Wally had in stock, Winchester Deer Season XP $20 with $5 rebate. I bought on Amazon a Weaver Savage Axis 48347 one piece scope mount $15. I put on it a scope iv'e had for 10 or 15 years, Ohuhu 6x24x50 $50. I bore sighted it at home (at about 30 feet). At the range I set it up for (on a bench rest) 50 yards to fine sight it in. It was a very windy day, crosswinds 15+ mph. I left the trigger as set by the factory, about 3lbs. After 8 shots it was good, group at about 1" (2 moa) an inch right of dead center (wind was blowing that way). I set the target out to 100 yards thinking it might shoot a little lower and more to the right because of the wind. 4 shots grouped exactly in the same spot as the 50 yard range. 3 shots were 3/4 moa and one shot was 1.25 moa. I am over 70 and can't shoot anywhere as well as I did 25 years ago. But from this performance I have no doubt a good marksman with hand loads can shoot .5-.75 moa groups all day long with this rifle. The barrel noticeably heated up after 4 or 5 shots.
    Some pundits say the stock is lousy. Go ahead and spend $100-200 on a Boyds stock and pillar bed it. You may gain 1/10th moa more accuracy. I think the stock is just fine. However, if Savage ever offered their new accustock for a reasonable price, I may consider it. Unless you are competing at Camp Perry 1000 yard, why spend $2000+ for a bolt rifle, when for $250 you can buy one 99% as accurate? For hunting, it is exactly the same. Even for tactical police work out to 200 yards it will get the job done exactly the same.
    I had looked at four walmarts and it wasn't in stock (they had the 3006 with package scope). I had found the right Walmart that had it in stock with Brickseek. More recently I found it at other walmarts and now the rebate was $75.

I have a nikon p 308 scope on it. The action sucks compared to my other rifles but the damn thing is just about 1/2 moa right now. I am not going to cry if it gets all scratched up. Gets dinged up in the truck. It just shoots way better than a $350 gun should shoot.

    I once was invited into a million dollars home and the door knobs was 1000 dollars each and even tho they was only about a year old many of them had begun to break
    Expensive isn't always better I have a 40 dollar Amazon scope with horrible eye relief but shoots tighter groups then my 300 dollar vortex

    What this shows you is you don't need all that hype and expense to get the "very best" tool for the job. A good tool regardless of cost will get the job done.

    I just got one today. I can't wait to go to the range. I am imagining one raged hole groups at 100 yards. Not sure if I'll get that out of factory ammo though, maybe match stuff.

    As I’ve learnt more on my journey as a firearms owner. Looking at getting into larger caliber as I only one .22s as at the time in my state those were the easiest to get plus the 1022 is a sexy beast. But I feel the savage axis will be my next purchase as I’ve watched videos and talked with people it seems to be the Corolla/civic of bolt actions ain’t pretty ain’t fancy but it works and it works pretty well

    It was this very video that convinced me to buy a savage axis II xp in 6.5 creedmoor. I still have yet to find any American eagle 140 grain open tip match yet for her. I call her windcutter, I thought that was a pretty accurate name for it.

    1000 yards with the Savage in 308 is no problem at all. I've hit targets at 1000 yards with Sako gamehead 180 grain rounds a few times. Highly recommend that ammo.

    Doesn't always have to be an expensive rifle, Although I had a savage axis II in 25-06, shot great at 50yds, at 100, it was everywhere no matter I did. Sold it.

    I Was very surprised by this video. I used to hunt a lot as a kid and have shot pistol all my life. I'm now wanting to get into long range competition shooting now. I would really appreciate your opinion. I've been looking at the Savage precision rifles because I want to get to 1000 yds. and I like the 6.5 Creedmoor simply for the fact they shoot relatively flatter. Precision rifles can get really expensive. I need to keep it under $1100.00. These were going to be thing I had questions on for you.

  • @keagancranor7680
    @keagancranor7680 Рік тому +1

    Good Morning,
    I have this same rifle for elk hunting. My question is, with a 100yd zero, how do you know the holds for greater than that? I have the basic Weaver 3-9 scope that came with it.

    • @TheLateBoyScout
      @TheLateBoyScout  Рік тому

      Knowing your holds takes work. You need all the data on your round... grain weight, velocity, ballistic coefficient, etc. Usually that's marked on the box, but sometimes you have to measure it yourself. OR find it online from a shooter who has already done the work. You also want to know the scope over bore height, which you can measure yourself, center of bore to center of scope.
      Then you'll want to find a good ballistic app that already has your particular scope reticle as an option, and enter all that info into the app. By doing that, you create a profile for your rifle/round which the app can use to predict drop. It should also show you what that drop looks like through your reticle at varying distances and scope magnification levels. Wind hold is another thing to consider, and if you can measure that at your range, you can put that data in... otherwise it's a guess.
      The app I like to use is called iStrelok. There are several others though, so take your time and find the one that suits you best. Most importantly, understand that long range shooting takes lots of work and study to get right. Pulling the trigger is the last of many steps.

  • @flexr642
    @flexr642 4 роки тому +1

    I don't see anything wrong with that scope... I think it's a perfect example of a budget rifle. Yes, you could go "better", but why when you just showed what you can do with it. Nice vid
