***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Tuesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Jerseys always seem to have calcium issues as soon as they calf, their body just leeches all of the calcium out of her body and dumps it into the milk. Many cows will die from it before the owners realize what happened. This is a good video for new cow owners to watch.

Watch for them being lethargic, they also feel cool to the touch. I used to check by feeling their ears.

Resting Bitchface how do you treat it? Can it be prevented by giving a supplement?

    • @Riverwell_Farm

Not always. We’ve almost finished calving our 280 jersey cows for the year, and we’ve only had about 5 with milk fever. We find it’s only an issue for over 5yos. We always supplement with Mag pre calving and Mag and Calcium post calving. They generally bounce back really quickly. Just like Hope did.

Yes I have always heard that of Jerseys as well because of mass amount of milk they produce before birth of calf.

As soon as I saw the picture I thought calcium! Grew up on a dairy farm and this was a common occurrence. We always kept Calcium drench on hand, mom would put it in one of the big old glass coke bottles, hold her head up and pour it down the throat. Worked like a miracle, glad Hope is ok.

Hi, love your videos. I live on an island 8 miles off the south west coast of Ireland 🇮🇪. We always keep a bottle of calcium in the house. It'll last for years, and if we don't need it, guaranteed someone else on the island will. Because we're so far out to sea, an hour by boat, the vets only come once a year to do the annual TB testing . I enjoy your channel well done. What'll you name the baby?

@@Dobviews So sorry to hear of your illness. I too have been very ill with 3 years, hence youtube is a lifeline. I was very active and fit. Then I got Lyme's disease, Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Myeloma. I'm getting stronger and doing everything in my power to get better. On maintenance dose of treatment now. I've given up carbs, so no bread, pasta, grain of any kind. Just meat, fish eggs and dairy. I do a bit of fasting, one day a week and thr rest of the days I eat in an 18/6 or 20/4 eating window. I started in March and it's been a game changer. When I went back to the hospital in July the doctor was dancing with delight. I had lost 37lbs and ALL my white blood cells and other markers were in the normal range. So we can help ourselves too. Never give up battling!!

Seems more and more people making videos turn greedy the more popular they become. Makes me upset because they appeared to be thoughtful people. I had such a close relationship with my dairy cow I named her Mama. The morning she delivered I had gone out to feed. She was laying on the ground with a low moan. I was there when her calf was born. She just laid there didn't move didn't get up. I took a towel and cleaned him up a bit then I picked him up and moved him to her sight. She slowly lifted her head her eyes got bright and she was up in a flash! She was making a noise like oooh oooh and started cleaning her son.
She was so excited. Then Mama got milk fever and despite early treatment she developed mastitis. Mama couldn't have anymore babies. She lived out her life grazing in the pasture. I still get tears in my eyes when I think of her. Of all the animals we have owned she was just special. They have their own unique personalities she owned my heart.
So happy things worked out well for you. The smile on your face says it all.

It is actually an imbalance between phosphorus & calcium. Giving calcium supplements can be a dangerous thing and actually cause more problems than not if they aren't having a specific need for it.
CMPK has the phosphorus that keeps things balanced.
I would recommend keeping the tube of CMPK on hand so that it can be given immediately if needed.

On a different UA-cam site a vet was called out for exact issue on a jersey momma. He said that there is actually a feed that you can give a month or so before calving. The feed teaches the body to pull calcium from the bones so as not to end up with milk fever.
I thought this was really interesting.

Please be careful round her, from a dairy farm here in Northern Ireland, dairy cows can be very protective of baby so always keep an escape route!

We have some calcium as a drench on hand for kidding season just in case to get the goat(s) through until the vet can be here. Can't hurt!

I was wondering if there was some preventive measure you could take a few days before the calf was born to prevent this happening

V all gestational birthing ruminants are at risk for milk fever, some worse than others.

@@RestingBitchface7 Especially those bred for producing lots of milk. It's that big flush of milk produced that is the issue. Beef cattle don't have as high of incidence, since they don't produce as much milk as dairy cattle.

At the age of twelve, my grandmother gave me my first cow in exchange I had to milk by hand and help with six other milk cows. We sold milk, butter, and made ice cream.
So glad your cow is doing well. In thirty years we only had one cow to get milk fever, she recovered also. Thanks for sharing.

I was so scared for Hope! Thank God you were able to get a Vet out fast enough to help her! I cried when she stood up for the first time after receiving the meds. And then again when she was reunited with her calf. That was scary! I’m amazed you stayed as calm as you did. I love Hope and have enjoyed watching your journey with her. Please do more videos with her and her calf. I’ll be anxious to hear what you name it. God bless you, your family and all of your animals!! 💕
