    That was fantastic. So good to see you using a long rod. Why long rods have fallen out of favour for 8 foot wands, escapes me. Tight lines

      Cheers 👍🏼 It took me a little while to get used to a longer rod but it’s proving really beneficial now.

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL When I started spinning in the late 1970s for mackeral, you rarely saw a rod under 10 foot. Modern rods with their lighter materials and faster actions allow for longer casts, but for me a longer rod comes into own when playing fish off the rocks as they allow for better control when fighting the fish. I bought some Modern shorter rods 10 years ago but I still prefer to fish with my 11 footer. Keep ‘em coming

    You are right about using a longer, heavier rod over rough ground. Where's the sense in using inadequate tackle where you need distance and control over any fish you might hook into. The last thing you need is a decent Bass tethered to a snag with an expensive lure.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  Рік тому

      Yes mate I agree. Of coarse, you don’t need a long, heavy rod all the time but when appropriate, it really boosts your confidence of being able to handle a good fish.

    Liked that a lot,I make lures down here in cornwall had a great season this year,I've lately been experimenting with surface lures at around 35g-40g using my nebula 10ft 56g,seems I can reach places and reefs at low tide that I could only dream of in a boat, but it's the shallow water I want ,interesting times ahead👍

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому +1

      Nice mate. I've been liking the heavier lures lately too. It's a different way of fishing compared to much lighter rods/lures.

    Like your videos .........Im looking at the 30-100g Todos Travel rod as m=it will be mainly used abroad but i will use it here . How are you finding the 3500 size reel with that rod as i was thinking 4500 Penn Authority ?

    Cal content = excellent viewing. Fact. Was wondering what weight the rod is, but when I looked it up I saw the price first. Didn’t get to the weight :) “Dear Mr S. Claus” I be been a good boy this year etc. Keep up the vids mate. Great to watch always.

    I have been using a 12" carp rod for heavy spinners but it is a bit spinless. Over about 50gm and i find all three 9" rods i have cast further but it is a nice option to have.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому

      Nice 👍🏼 Yeah the 9ft rods might have a bit more back bone to them to punch out lures better?

    The days you can’t stand on that rock unless you’re in a wetsuit are the best for the 50g Enticer 😂

    As always a great video with great content. My reason for messaging is your safety. I've noticed in a few videos you're put yourself in some precarious situations where you could easy over balance and fall in. Should you not be wearing a buoyancy aid so if you did fall in and hit your head it would turn you around so you head is up on the surface. Have a word with Jai (Smash Fishing), for the best type for you. Having been in that situation years ago it saved my life. Safety first.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому

      Yes mate you make a good point. There are some occasions when I think a buoyancy aid would be necessary. With winter coming and big swells, maybe I'll look into it. Thanks a lot 👍🏼

    Good video again, thanks for sharing. How did you find your wrist after working the big patch pls? Just wondering if the longer rod end up tiring you out quicker.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks. Yeah it can get tiring after a while. I hold the rod and work the lures completely differently to how I would on my lighter rods. It just takes a bit of getting used to thats all 👍🏼

      Thanks for your honesty, it is appreciated. Grant is supposed to be bringing out a lighter version soon, so I am sure that will be of more day to day use for UK anglers. Keep up the excellent variety of vids, love the mix of species and tactics👏🏻👍🏻

    Good vid as always mate. What's your opinion on the slammer? Would you stick with it over a Shimano or do you switch between for different types of fishing?

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks mate. I've actually been thinking lately that I'm really impressed with the slammer. It's an ideal reel for that heavier rod. I'd still go with a shimano for my other set up. The vanford is an excellent reel

    I'm new to lure fishing. Want to get a bass rod. Found a 9ft Penn 4 piece. Not sure what size reel to get. I want something that will work for mackerel feathers too. I do have a cheap 7000 real but I was thinking a 5000. Is that too big for a bass 9ft rod? Thanks.

    • @samosborne37
      @samosborne37 2 роки тому +1

      3000-4000 if its a shimano, 2500-3000 if its a daiwa or penn

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому +1

      If you're wanting a 9ft rod to fish for bass and use with mackerel feathers then I'd go with a 4000 size reel. If you're throwing out a string of 5 or 6 mackerel lures and hook 5 or 6 fish at one time then you'll want a reel that can handle that. Penn also make very tough reels so maybe you could pair the two together. The penn pursuit is a good, affordable reel 👍🏼👍🏼

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL thanks dude! That looks good. I was looking at the Penn Peirce but it missed out a 4k. When straight from 3 to 5k. I do have a cheap beach caster Rod but looking for something I can fold down nicely for bass and take on my road strips around the south of UK. And I have some good bass fishing locally (so I'm told!) Thanks!

    Off to tintagel next week , is there a link for those lures please m8 and i didnt catch the name of the reel ? also cant find the rod on ebay ? second thoughts £25 for a lure is the dumbest thing i have seen in a long time .... im guessing your sponsored...

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 роки тому

      You’ve never paid £25 for a lure?? I suggest you do. Most good quality lures will be between £15 & £25. If you look after them they’ll last for ages. I’ve caught plenty of bass on £25 lures which are years old, just change the hooks when needed.
      I’m not sponsored no. The reel is a Penn Slammer 3500 and the rod is available from samsonfishing.com 👍🏼
