    Clarification: Ride to Happiness' drive tires roll the train back to the launch platform where guests can evacuate, not the main station. Although it would be awesome if they could send the trains backwards through the Jojo roll. That would be the best evac ever.

      I think I'd have been inclined to design them so they accelerate the train just enough to make sure it didn't valley. then there's no evacuation required.

      I got the “chance” to ride Pegasus and the many other “Olympians”. Below is my 10ish word for all of the coasters unless specified these were front or really close to it.
      Zeus-A fitting lighting logo but not terribly rumbly.(The day I went, I had the fortune of experiencing this in a downpour. It didn’t for the rest of the day but I thought this was worth noting).
      Hades 360(Mid-Train): Hell’s not this cruel.
      Hades 360: Tolerable but still hell on my body.
      Cyclops: Not an ugly monster but still a monster.
      Pegasus: I’d be in less pain taking on Spiral Pegasus.
      Overall: Glad I got to experience but not rushing back to it…maybe just keep to the water park…or not…who knows.

    The idea that Arrow Dynamics didn't think the upstop pads instead of wheels would be a problem on Magnum XL-200 before its initial release is... amazing to me. Let alone the metal lap bar... its nuts. With a coaster that large, and at that speed... it seems almost inevitable these would be issues. Regardless, a very interesting video! Look forward to the Lightning Rod one!

      I used to have an old VHS of an early test run POV on Magnum. At the crest of every hill, you could hear the upstop pads scraping the rails. It sounded like radio static.

    • @AlexAfferMetallica
      @AlexAfferMetallica Рік тому +1

      Ive always thought the same thing, like obviously pads would cause way too much friction and be way less practical than wheels, and why would they think to first try this out on a record breaking, limit pushing coaster like Magnum? Maybe they thought the upstop wheels wouldnt be as necessary since the coaster had no inversions?

    • @coasterguy
      @coasterguy Рік тому +6

      @@AlexAfferMetallica Arrow considered Magnum to be basically a very large scale mine train. The cars and chassis were pulled directly from that line - and those used the unstop pads. The first 'large mine train' model posing as a regular coaster was Astroworld's "Dexter Frebish's Electric Roller Ride" (later named Excalibur) that featured a large drop near the beginning of the layout, then basically did lots of helixes and mine train-style stuff, only way up on stilts. That drop worked just fine with the pads, except for the back car, which would smack those pads on the underside of the track and catapult back-seat riders into their lap bars (which were at least six inches above their laps). It was deliciously terrifying, especially for folks who'd ridden the ride many times, but never before in the back seat. The looks on their faces said it all.

      EDIT: I realize this is a pejorative comment, but as someone who very much prefers milder rides... RMC's fetish for adding unnecessary intensity to what had often previously been family or moderate-intensity coasters irks me to no end. And after what they did to Colossus, the one major coaster at Magic Mountain I was likely to work up the nerve to ride... I have little reason to go there.

    Here's another one that doesn't get brought up - the original audio system on Space Mountain at Disneyland. After the success of Space Mountain: De La Terre A La Lune, Space Mountain got a new audio system with a score composed by Dick Dale. However this system added a lot of weight to the trains, specifically the batteries. Not only did these batteries never get charged properly, causing the music to not play, it also caused excessive stress to the track and structure, causing it to be structurally compromised, and led to the 2005 retracking by Dynamic Attractions, as well as almost a complete rebuild of the structure, with supports being dug more underground to support the new track/trains.

    I'd jate to say it but Twisted collosus somewhat deserves to be there. As a Roller Coaster Operator i understand the pain of not being able to dispatch trains on time. From my experience, the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest, including myself, is not having loose articles ready/ or left at the queue or with a non-rider, taking bags up to the station. With only one train on our track, it severly drops our ridership per hour. BUT as a Roller Coaster Operator; the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest. not having loose articles ready, taking bags up to the station. My ride has one train and it does severely drop our riders per hour. IF TC gets a dual station, i do hope is simillar to Tatsus Station....

    I live an hour from Mt Olympus and have been on its 4 wooden coasters too many times to count. Pegasus is painfully boring until that last turn, then it's just painful. It's a neck breaker for sure, and it always catches you off guard. I would say Hades 360 is more painful on your neck overall though from sheer roughness. It's a cool layout but it's a guaranteed headache, neckache, and backache after 1 ride, even as a kid.

    I can attest to blacking out on Intimidator 305. My daughter and I road it on the first weekend and throughout that summer. She and I put our hands up on our very first ride. I saw on the turn that her hands had dropped. She was out cold until the airtime hill rebooted her. It happened every time she rode it through the summer until the trim breaks were installed.

    Couple things about Mr. Freeze. The two versions at OT and STL are actually different in that they are mirror images of each other. STL turns left into the top hat, and OT turns right. Second, the LIM’s actually push the train further up the spike, not pull it down faster than gravity.

    i operated mr freeze at st louis, the reason that one valleys is not the launch motors, one of the trains has issues with drag on the metal fins, i worked an entire season without a valley, however, the bad train stops before the station several times a week, sometime several times a day, the drag gets so bad the it almost cant make it through the tophat quite often, thats how you know its going to underpark

    3:14 I don’t think that’s right way it works. I think the LIMs actually pull the train higher than it would go naturally. Then it drops with gravity. I don’t believe there is any downward launch there.

    • @MColin28
      @MColin28 Рік тому

      That is correct. The spike LIMs are to accelerate it up the spike so it made it back around. They do nothing to boost the train after the spike “lift”. I came to the comments to mention just that very thing 👍

    Hey! Wood coasters are my favorite and I haven't been to Mount Olympus yet. I actually might be looking forward to the last turn on Pegasus more than I am Hades 360. I love crazy sudden laterals. The perfect example: I'm the only person I know that thought the entrance to the Beast's helix was better before the retrack. I miss the sudden punch in the ribs!

    • @OklahomaCoasterFan
      @OklahomaCoasterFan Рік тому

      I haven't ridden Beast since the retrack. I didn't know that they reprofiled the turn into the helix. That's so sad. It was one of my favorite transitions on any coaster. Not painful to me, just a lot of fun. That transition on Pegasus is also fun. It's also hilarious, because it makes no sense. It's not painful at all, unless the person sitting on the left fights the forces, while the person on the right goes with it, which could cause them to bump heads. I enjoyed Pegasus a lot, but still # 4 in the park.
