Great Container Tomatoes: The 'Black Krim' Heirloom - The Rusted Garden 2013

- I will be recommending tomatoes and other vegetables that do very well in containers. I recommend the 'Black Krim'. It is a heirloom tomato out of Russia with a fun history. The tomato has great color, great taste and does very well in containers. I highly recommend it base on its color, taste and relative ease of care. There are 30 plus tomatoes on the plant in the video.

I saw one person say that they taste best when still partly green. I never tried one that early. What I have discovered is that left to ripen a couple of days off the vine helps bring forth the smoky quality of the Black Krim. Eaten straight off the vine when appearing to be mostly ripe, I didn't pick up much of the smoky essence at all.
SOME HISTORY ON THE GENETICS TOO! NICE!
Hmm Black Krim I must add this to my next season planning....looks great...thank you
Very pretty tomato. I am going to try one of the darker tomatoes next year. Thanks for sharing!
My first year growing the Black Krim. Doing very well so far in Colorado Zone 5b. I love, love the flavor.
Thank you a lot for your advice and encouragement!
I will follow it and put to them again calcium.
BTW the tomatoes with the fertilizer "banana-egg" are doing great :)
I'm going to grow this... Looks good!
Thats great. That is what I was thinking.
I grew Black Krim this year and last. Its a great tasting tomato with a hint of salt. Mine don't look as vigorous as yours though. They are getting about 10 hours of sun a day but I think the rain has really hurt my harvest this year. Many days that weren't raining were cloudy.
Cool plant, interesting origins as well. Thanks for sharing!
He has great taste!
I just have to say I really enjoy your videos. My container tomatoes have had a tough summer, do to all the rain. The tomatoes have fungus and disease. I tried spraying them with a baking soda spray early in June, but I think the constant rain just washed the solution off and aided in the diseases. I had a really awesome patio tomato going into late June over 30 fruits but a deer came by and ate all but 4 off of my patio bummer.
Thanks. I try and keep things short but useful. Can be a challenge.
Nice looking tomatoes. I bought one from the shop and saved the seeds. I just rooted some and can't wait have some in the new year.
***** I hope it goes well. They are great tomatoes. They dont like high heat 95+ but I still grow them.
My son's favorite.
I had a difficult time with my 1st Black Krim plant, because I used a top soil, rather than a potting medium, and wasn't fertilizing enough. No diseases to speak of, save for some leaf curling that resulted from the prolonged heat wave we suffered about a month ago. I ended up planting a sucker in a decent potting medium combined with fertilizer and it's doing really well.
Unfortunately a few tomatoes got BER on the parent plant. I tried to fix w/pulverized eggshells, but lime slurry is next.
This tomato plant would be great to grow in hydroponics deep water culture. I wanna try it!
Krims are great for juicing, the flavor is awesome.
Yes, right off the vine they are great!!
I love your videos I have learned a lot from watching them could you please tell me the best company to get heirloom seeds
Your welcome.
This is my first time growing the black krim.. I'm excited for harvesting.... I'm also doing black cherry tomatoes.. thanks for sharing your insight... I'm addicted to preservation.canning... dehydrating etc. ❤
The black cherry variety is so good.

Did the heat take it out?
Stubborn. And I didnt learn that until later, years ago. I am going to plant differently next year. I am going to start the Black variety later and let it grow more into my fall.
Hi Gary,
Please, give me an idea about the following question that I have concerning my black krim tomatoes. My containers are 1,5 times bigger then yours, the tomatoes are 2-3 times than yours and the stem also. I did the mulching as you showed and the fertilizing too. But I got on some tomatoes blossom and rot. In other 15 variety I have no problem, but they are smaller than the krim type. I forgot one krim tomato to mulch and it does not have the problem too. I am so much confused!
Thanks!
Why do you think container tomatoes are smaller? Water issues, or a soil nutrition constraint?
I was excited to grow this one after watching your series on it, but I killed it with irregular watering. Onwards and upwards. Thanks for these videos.
I eat so many...i am a black krim 🤗
We are very arid/dry here. I never have any issues with fungus, blight or mildew type diseases.
Was the plant in self watering container? Do you recommends using it?
Just wondered Gary , why do you grow a lot of Black variety tomatoes which have been bred to grow in cooler climates, where you get such hot weather.?
If they are smaller, like a little bit bigger than a typical cherry tomato, they could be Indigo Rose tomatoes which start out being egg plant purple on the top and green on the bottom. Are they in bunches like a cherry tomato?
June 17, I just fertilized my Black Krim in a container. I'm hoping for positive results. I have been spraying with the baking soda solution and I hope to have some decent tomatoes come August.
GonzoDuke Good Luck! Sound like you got the plan in place. Now lets hope the plant cooperates along with Mother Nature.
How do you mean sick and dark color?
Thanks for this, about to grow my first black Krim 🙂
It is a good one

Did my in 5 gallon bucket with drain hole on the bottom with 2 drip that is 1gph..on for 10 min at 6am. Full sun all day on cement
Help! 2 of the tomatoe plants i bought this spring are producing black fruits with green bottoms. What are they?
I dont know another tomato with this taste. Cherokee Purple is close.
Just bad luck sometimes. Nice job on growing 15 varieties. Just give it some calcium and water it evenly. It should correct itself. Sometimes larger plants with big tomatoes can take out nutrients really fast. Or the suck up the water and the container dries out more so then others. Lots of variables. But Id say your doing pretty darn good.
I just planted this kind.. In a raised bed though, with a cage and stake. Hopefully it will be fine!
It should do well.

You are about 2 zones off from me. I am curious if you get leaf spot and blights on your tomatoes or do you think the climate change protecst you from those diseases?
And I thought i had all the tomatos I wanted... now Ihave to buy a pack of these
I really like them

@THERUSTEDGARDEN all tomatoes are temp sensitive. WTF you don't have a clue do you
Gary, I forgot to ask you what you are feeding your container tomatoes and how often you feed them? These tomatoes are beautiful.
rosalind24 Thats a tuff question. I change based on what is on sale. For my container plants I typically use non organic liquid fertilizer like Miracle Gro. Tomatoes are such heavy feeders they suck the life out of soil. About every two weeks till they are done.
My Starting Mix:
I mix the soil with a few handfuls of lime and or eggshells. This year they will get some bone meal and blood meal and a 3-4-4 fertilizer from Epsoma. To get them off to a good start.
The feeding with liquid fertilizer should start when first fruit sets unless your not mixing stuff in at the start.
Thank you very much! Hopefully it will go well. :)
Hmm. I dont know what that is.
Anyway, I did get to harvest a few Black Krim tomatoes and I've found that when allowed to ripen for a few days off the vine, the taste is really terrific. You can definitely catch a smoky essence to the flavor. Are there any other heirloom varieties that have a similar taste but grow larger on average?
My Cherokee Purple grew very large in the container. My Black Krims were abundant but smaller than the Rustic Gardens

How do you think this plant would have grown if you suckered and pulled the first couple flowers?
+John Motyl Jr I think that always brings up some size to the tomatoes.
dude you are the only youtuber who has even come close to explaining the tomatoes we are growing. yours look very similar but our are even a darker purple. I can't figure out why they are so purple.
I am going to try and do more spotlights this year on them.

The title should be corrected. Black Krim is a Ukrainian NOT a Russian tomato. Krim means Crimea in Ukrainian. Crimea is part of Ukraine, in spite of the hostile invasion and occupation by Putin.
Thanks
Crimea is Russia
The only part of Ukraine which is Ukraine is Lviv. everything else is old Russian lands which were given to you by RUSSIA from RUSSIA . and now we taking it back from the traitors .
