  • I will be recommending tomatoes and other vegetables that do very well in containers. I recommend the 'Black Krim'. It is a heirloom tomato out of Russia with a fun history. The tomato has great color, great taste and does very well in containers. I highly recommend it base on its color, taste and relative ease of care. There are 30 plus tomatoes on the plant in the video.

    I saw one person say that they taste best when still partly green. I never tried one that early. What I have discovered is that left to ripen a couple of days off the vine helps bring forth the smoky quality of the Black Krim. Eaten straight off the vine when appearing to be mostly ripe, I didn't pick up much of the smoky essence at all.

    I grew Black Krim this year and last. Its a great tasting tomato with a hint of salt. Mine don't look as vigorous as yours though. They are getting about 10 hours of sun a day but I think the rain has really hurt my harvest this year. Many days that weren't raining were cloudy.

    I just have to say I really enjoy your videos. My container tomatoes have had a tough summer, do to all the rain. The tomatoes have fungus and disease. I tried spraying them with a baking soda spray early in June, but I think the constant rain just washed the solution off and aided in the diseases. I had a really awesome patio tomato going into late June over 30 fruits but a deer came by and ate all but 4 off of my patio bummer.

    I had a difficult time with my 1st Black Krim plant, because I used a top soil, rather than a potting medium, and wasn't fertilizing enough. No diseases to speak of, save for some leaf curling that resulted from the prolonged heat wave we suffered about a month ago. I ended up planting a sucker in a decent potting medium combined with fertilizer and it's doing really well.
    Unfortunately a few tomatoes got BER on the parent plant. I tried to fix w/pulverized eggshells, but lime slurry is next.

    Hi Gary,
    Please, give me an idea about the following question that I have concerning my black krim tomatoes. My containers are 1,5 times bigger then yours, the tomatoes are 2-3 times than yours and the stem also. I did the mulching as you showed and the fertilizing too. But I got on some tomatoes blossom and rot. In other 15 variety I have no problem, but they are smaller than the krim type. I forgot one krim tomato to mulch and it does not have the problem too. I am so much confused!
    Thanks!

  • @smeghed1025
    @smeghed1025 11 років тому

    Why do you think container tomatoes are smaller? Water issues, or a soil nutrition constraint?
    I was excited to grow this one after watching your series on it, but I killed it with irregular watering. Onwards and upwards. Thanks for these videos.

  • @christschool
    @christschool 11 років тому

    If they are smaller, like a little bit bigger than a typical cherry tomato, they could be Indigo Rose tomatoes which start out being egg plant purple on the top and green on the bottom. Are they in bunches like a cherry tomato?

    Just bad luck sometimes. Nice job on growing 15 varieties. Just give it some calcium and water it evenly. It should correct itself. Sometimes larger plants with big tomatoes can take out nutrients really fast. Or the suck up the water and the container dries out more so then others. Lots of variables. But Id say your doing pretty darn good.

    Gary, I forgot to ask you what you are feeding your container tomatoes and how often you feed them? These tomatoes are beautiful.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому +2

      rosalind24 Thats a tuff question. I change based on what is on sale. For my container plants I typically use non organic liquid fertilizer like Miracle Gro. Tomatoes are such heavy feeders they suck the life out of soil. About every two weeks till they are done.
      My Starting Mix:
      I mix the soil with a few handfuls of lime and or eggshells. This year they will get some bone meal and blood meal and a 3-4-4 fertilizer from Epsoma. To get them off to a good start.
      The feeding with liquid fertilizer should start when first fruit sets unless your not mixing stuff in at the start.

    Anyway, I did get to harvest a few Black Krim tomatoes and I've found that when allowed to ripen for a few days off the vine, the taste is really terrific. You can definitely catch a smoky essence to the flavor. Are there any other heirloom varieties that have a similar taste but grow larger on average?
