Correct me if I am wrong, basically IDS is like a door alarm that pretty much alerts the security team but the intruder can still enter anyway while IPS is a door alarm with an auto close feature when it detects an unusual access.

Yes, IDS give only Alert it can't directly block attack
IPS it can block attack, source IP, Resetting TCP connection
So we can say that IPS is the extended version {better version} of IDS
