Amazing Aurora Australis - Brightest lights I've ever seen

- Today I'd like you to follow me on the adventure of a lifetime as I seek to capture the amazing Aurora Australis in all it's glory. This night was the biggest aurora event I've ever seen and possibly the largest for at least 20 years.
What started out as a struggle to find clear skies quickly escalated into the most magnificent night that I've ever encountered as an astro landscape photographer.

I think we all thought about Alyn that night 💔❤
Yes absolutely
Wasn't that one of the greatest shows on earth?!?! It was everywhere for hours! 😃 Maybe it was courtesy of the spirit of Alyn Wallace to get the world excited about the night sky. ❤ Beautiful and amazing images as always Richard!🙂 Cheers to you!
Thanks for your kind words Laura.
Richard, never have I seen you so animated during a nightshoot. Like a kid in a candy shop! The aurora does that to people for some strange reason. I'm so glad that night sky lovers from both hemispheres got to witness a part of history. This was officially the strongest solar storm for 21 years beating the Halloween 2003 storm. I just wished Alyn Wallace was still with us to witness it 💚 brilliant video
Thanks so much Tony. Yes it is easy to get a bit carried away ..!!
Loved the ending. One master of their craft honoring another master of their craft. They say you don't realise how much you appreciate someone until they're gone...;
Thank you for always bringing us awesome videos, Richard!
And Alyn, thank you for the lightshow, it was awesome!🌠
Thank you so much for watching.
More tripods! More everything! 😄. Man, I take my hat of for you Richard how well you were able to document this frantic and historical night! What an experience and boy, did you capture lots of great images with a good variety also 👌. Love how the reds were so well defined in Australia!
Haha, yes it's always a mad panic when these things happen Jeroen . .as you well know my friend.
You did better than I did...I couldn't even film a video, I was too flabbergasted by what I was seeing!
It was a special night that's for sure! Never in a million years would I have thought to see them like that just outside the city I live in in Eastern Canada. The colours were incredible!
2024 has been wild, Full Solar Eclipse, record auroras...what's next? (Hard not to think about Alyn)
Thanks for tuning in Jason. Yes it has been a big year.
WOW!! SUPER photography! Loved the Silos at the end 20:28!!
My favourite as well.
Breath taking images. I went out that night after my aurora app went nuts and felt the same exhilaration. I hope it wasn't a once in a life time event, but if it was, I'm so glad I got a chance to experience it.
Thanks for watching Rory
Amazing mate, we got to see it here very strong in South Wales about 20 miles away from Alyn’s hometown, a nice touch to mention Alyn.
Thanks for tuning in Lenny
Beautiful ending tribute and he would of loved your selfie shot too.
Many thanks indeed my friend.
Love your energy, Richard! You are THE ambassador of night sky photography! So fortunate to have you ...
You're very kind Chris
I am touched by your enthusiasm and the tribute to Alyn. Thank you for sharing this beautiful moment with us!
I appreciate you watching Rafael
Fantastic images Richard. Your tribute was very moving. Alyn was such an inspiration for so many and we are all so fortunate to have had the benefit of his work and knowledge. Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words Rod
What an amazing light show. Will be hard to beat this one. I have to admire your enthusiasm, it just shows us how much you love doing nightscapes. A lovely tribute at the end. Thanks for sharing. May all your travels be safe.
Very kind of you Darren. Always appreciate your comments.
I was out on the field on that friday too... While my D750 worked like crazy, i just stood there, with tears in my eyes and watched, how it dances on the night sky.
It was my very very first time to witness it, i still hardly can describe that experience, what i felt standing there. It was out of this world... 🥹
Yes it sure was out of this world.
Amazing as always. Here in Canada the whole sky was lite up. Such an amazing night.
Yes it sure was.
It sure was a night to remember Richard, I was fortunately in NZ when it went off and OMG what a night - your excitement in your video was just like us dancing around NZ and going wowww just wowww. Never thought I would witness a G5 in my lifetime but so glad I did. Keep the videos coming, your enthusiasm is infectious when it comes to night scape images.
You're very kind Judy. I'm glad you saw it as well.
Beautiful. So lucky to have witnessed something special.
I live to Caboolture, the only Aura lights we spotted is 🚔👮 lights
Thanks as always Derek
I really like the photographs especially the tribute to Alyn at the end.
I'm glad you enjoyed it Russell.
Thank you again Richard. Fantastic shots with a lovely tribute to Alyn. Cheers.
Thanks so much for your comments Adi
So beautiful impressions of the Aurora from Down Under 👌🏼🫶🏼!
I'm very pleased you like it. Thanks for watching.
❤🤩♥️ What a magnificent show … 😱
So beautiful …
Incredible ❤
Alyn would have been going crazy like so many of us all over the world . He surely loved the picture you took ❤
You’re so good, my Dearest
Luv ya
Very kind of you as always Carole, thank you my friend.
Absolutely beautiful! So awesome. Once in a lifetime, and you got it and got it perfectly! Simply amazing!
Thanks so much.
Bravo, Richard! Wonderful photos, wonderful behind-the-scenes footage, and you conveyed your excitement and enthusiasm perfectly. Your tribute to Alyn Wallace was beautiful.
Thank you Doug, always appreciate your comments and support.
wow, spectacular night, it is a shame Brisbane couldn't see the aurora. thanks for sharing and it is absolutely stunning.
Yes lots of clouds up your way unfortunately.
@nightscapeimages.richard no clouds on Sunday, I went out to Wivenhoe Dam and no Aurora, still able to take Milky way and star trails.
Wonderful photos Richard - truly awesome - and a great choice of music as an accompaniment! Congratulations. And a lovely tribute to Alyn. Thanks for sharing!
As always I greatly appreciate your comments Darrel.
Superb and epic theatre on the sky Richard. Thank you. In my country i saw Aurora Borealis on 10th May 2024. It was the first time in my life. I took more pictures during one hour. . Wonderful experience.
Thanks as always for watching Peter, what a wonderful night it was.
A special night for million of people, once in a lifetime experience unless the Sun continues to impress us this Year. Good shots.
Thanks so much Robb
Absolutely stunning!!! Amazing shots!! Alyn would’ve loved this.
Thank you, yes I'm sure he would have.
Think I was just as excited as you obviously were. I watched it from the NE of Scotland and still working my way through 3000+ shots taken that night. One I will never forget
Thank you Duncan, appreciate your comments.
Thanks Richard I am really appreciate sharing this amazing event and your work.
Thanks so much
Great video documenting a very special night. Lovely tribute to Alyn at the end.
Thanks so much for checking it out Mike.
Superb video Richard, loved watching this, a spectacular show and I can really feel your excitement on location. Beautiful images and a once in a life time show indeed. We had an epic show in N. Ireland, best I've seen since 2003 and like yourself I can't believe how lucky I was to get a clear night. That isolated red beam in your footage away from the main aurora looks like SARS, often a precursor to STEVE. Fantastic vlog and hope you are keeping well.
Thanks so much for watching Martin, yes I'm doing well thanks.
Love, love, love this video Richard. It brought back all the excitement I felt while I was out this night. My husband also watching said "he sounds like you" lol. It was such a beautiful night that will stay in our memories forever.
Haha, we must be tarred with the same brush Anne-Maree . . !!! Thanks for your great comments.
So so so glad you made this! Thankyou for documenting how amazing this was here in Victoria Australia!
Thanks for your great support Rob
Thanks Richard, for yet another brilliant video. It brought back some great memories from our adventure last Saturday. When my wife and drove down to Bells Beach from Melbourne with the hope of evading the clouds and seeing our first Aurora and WOW it was brilliant. Love you work and thanks so much.
Really appreciate that Pete
Nice touch on Allyn. Bless him and you. Wish I could been there so exciting. So many great shots here in the USA. Down as far South as Key Largo Florida. My beloved niece and her husband sent me their Raw fillies to work on. They live in dark sky country of far Western South Dakota. Oh how I wish could have been there or anywhere away from light pollution here in Southeast Virginia. Just had my shoulder replaced on Wednesday. Maybe there will be another time. Great shots and energy Richard. Thank you again so much for sharing. Keep them coming.
Thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement Charlie. I hope the shoulder heals well soon.
Surely was amazing.I must have been the only one to miss it😢great captures Richard
Not the only one..........
A few did miss it. Lots of clouds about in certain areas.
i missed it also cobber.
The excitment in your voice Richard echoed mine exactly when I caught my first on the 11th May, I had no idea on settings as Ive never sought to shoot it before so I just left the camera on what I would normaly have for tracking apart from a shorter shutter speed but in the end if the pics didnt work it didnt matter I just felt so privelaged to have witnesed it in real time with the naked eye watching the beams come and go and the colours where other worldly, what a night, and to dedicate it to Alyn just sheer class, Im sure he would have loved it, thankyou
You're a legend Nick. I'm so pleased you guys in the west are seeing these events as well.
this is absolutely amazing. your enthusiasm is contagious
And you are so very kind.
Oh my goodness, Richard! What amazing photos and video! Definitely looks like a once in a lifetime event. Never seen an aurora, so thank you for sharing and allowing us to witness it through your imagery.
You're welcome Robert
Wow Richard! This video was spectacular! Seeing you so jazzed up and almost speechless with the show you were seeing was going to be the best part of the video. Your awesome images were going to be the frosting on the cake, then you got the tribute to Alyn Wallace in! That put it over the top for me. You really outdid yourself! By the way, the conditions in northeast Wisconsin may be looking good for some Aurora hunting tonight.
Thanks for your kind words Pat, always appreciated.
Best Aurora I have ever seen! You got some amazing images! Thank you for sharing!
Yes it was a beautiful night for sure.
Absolutely stunning photos Richard, I always love your work. 😍
I very much appreciate you watching.
It was awesome here in northern hemisphere too. Was great to be out under the night sky. Spent some time driving around too. Tried the next night again but too much forest fire smoke.
Thanks for tuning in Guy.
My tears started rolling on that last frame. I'd like to think that maybe he helped color the night we all experienced. Certainly, if he was still with us, he'd have been a pretty excited guy!! Great images, Richard! If I ever see it again, I'm going to do what you did and keep moving through the night to capture different images and foreground.
Thanks so much Andrea. I had to keep moving as I didn't want to get stuck with the same composition all night.
What an amazing event. I love the excitement and panic in your voice trying to capture it. Know that feeling very well.
Haha, yes I guess we were all chasing our tails a bit that night mate.
Richard, that was a fantastic video!! So glad you got to witness it where you were. So jealous of the lack of people !! But at the same time I’m so very glad that so many people were able to witness such a spectacular event! The people who were parked next to Suz and I brought their kids out to witness it. They were not photographers. But they were in awe of what they saw. I didn’t get stunning compositions like you did. But very grateful for the images that I did capture. We were heading west when the notifications kept coming in so detoured hoping to capture it. I’m glad we did. I’ve never seen anything like it. Especially in Melbourne. So very glad to have seen your stunning images.
Thanks so much Jules. I'm really pleased that you and Suz have been able to get out a bit more in recent times. From what I saw your images are gorgeous.
It was a Fantastic! night Richard. Great excitement, loved the movie footage of it. Like you, I drove for 5+ hours to get clear skies, which meant I didn't last all the way until daylight the next day but I was very happy I did the trip. I have seen a couple of big ones in 2023, the one on Dec 1st/2nd 2023 was a biggee as well. Your second last image has to be one for the history books and should be a great seller. A finally the tribute to Alyn, very well done as usual my friend. 🙂
Thanks for your very kind words Les. We don't get really big shows normally where I live. . not like you guys and the Tassie folk . .But I was really pleased to be in my own district to see this one.
Love it Richard thanks a lot for making this video for us.
Thanks so much, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
That's amazing and magical light captured, Richard. It's so beautiful as you say 😍♥
Thanks so much Selva
Very enjoyable video. The star gods turned the lights on for a special event. Maybe in 20years we will see it again.
You got a few top shelf photos
Thanks Phillip, always appreciated mate.
This was just breathtaking. Special for sure. Thank you for sharing it with us.
You're very welcome, thanks for watching.
Brilliant shots Richard, what an amazing night even up here in Townsville.
Yes amazing that you could see it up there Dennis

Thank you for watching my friend
❤❤❤❤❤ Exceptionnel ! Quelle chance et quel talent
MERCI pour ce grand moment.
Thank you my friend.
Magnificent as always Richard and a nice touch for Alyn at the end. Due to my location away from home I missed the whole show so thank you for documenting this in such a fabulous way.
Sorry you missed it. Thanks for tuning in.
Wow Richard, thanks for taking the time to document a truly amazing event, very inspirational and the final images are fantastic, great light painting on the foreground subjects.
Thanks as always for watching Ewan, really appreciated.

You're so very kind Ian. Thanks for tuning in my friend.
That was fantastic, Richard! So much variety in locations and amazing Aurora.
Yes I did a few miles that night.
Just WOW !!!
All I got.
Yes it was a bit like that.
Truly amazing richard. I was out that night myself in ireland and I can honestly say that I have never saw anything like that In my life before. RIP alyn..

Wow Richard glad you got to see and experience this magical event. Thanks for the video great to see it in action 😊📸
Always appreciate your comments Liz.
Absolutely stunning Richard. 😍
Really appreciate that Sharon
Richard, thanks for sharing your incredible experience. The mural and silo photo looks outstanding. I noticed the dancing lights in sky behind you during your last few seconds before you drove home; wow! My weather forecast on last Friday night, clouds until around 3 AM. Foolish me, I stayed home! I too like to plan my night photography trips so I take all the right equipment and know my location.
Yes it was amazing to see the dancing lights all through the night. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely amazing result/s Richard

Always appreciated Gary
Brilliant work Richard! The evening was like that for me too. A race to capture images and just amazing wherever you looked in the sky. I imagine you didn’t want the night to end. Love all your images and thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching Dianne, I really appreciate it.
Wow. Amazing. The best I’ve seen. A great capture.
Thanks so much for watching.
Best photos I have seen of this event Richard. Wait a minute these weren’t photos these were the best images I have seen and a fine piece of art. Loved your energy in this one and the real excitement that overcome you.
Thanks as always for your kind support Andrew.
it was definitely the most magical night of my life. We experienced Aurora on all horizons in central Idaho, USA. It was stunning! Awesome video, and stunning images! Thank you! ✨ Cheers to Alyn. ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words Veronica.
Richard, amazing!! 😍 It was a special night for everyone!
I witnessed and captured the columns of green and red dancing lights at ULURU!! 😍
Hopefully there will be more this year.
That's so amazing, thanks for watching.
Beautiful tribute to Alyn, Richard. Certainly, he would make great images of this aurora.
Yes Alyn would have loved this event for sure.
Absolutely amazing Richard, well done.
Really appreciate that Steve
Wow Richard! What a wonderful adventure you had. Fantastic shots for a once in a lifetime experience! Take care, Jerry
Thanks once again Jerry
My sentiments exactly. Epic storm in Montana that night. 400 images and every one is incredible. 360 degrees of aurora.
Thanks for looking Keith
This was probably my all-time favorite video of yours. Your enthusiasm was awesome. I drove over six hours back home from my best friends funeral in Kentucky that evening and then jumped right back in my vehicle 30 minutes later and went out to shoot the Aurora in Southern Michigan, USA. What an absolutely amazing experience it was. Your photos were absolutely stunning. Keep up the amazing work. I look forward to your next adventure.
Thanks so much for your kind words Philip, really appreciated.
I got lots of pics of it in way north Maine in the US. Awesome! Theirs going to be more nights like that during this high point of the solar cycle. Looking forward to it!
Yes we may well see plenty more like this.
Sensational Richard. These images are absolutely stunning. What a show, this universe never ceases to amaze with it's beauty, I'm just lost for words. You have captured it so well! ❤
Very kind of you Maz. Did you get to see the aurora ..??
@@nightscapeimages.richard Yes I did, unfortunately where I wanted to go was going to be clouded out, according to the apps and a few comments I read from people that live out that way. I ended up going to a local beach, which was very light polluted, but still captured something. I still need to process what I got, just haven't had the chance. It won't be as spectacular as yours, my friend. But, by geez it was great being out there and seeing this show 😊😊
WOW!!!!!! Richard, there are no words! Absolutely beautiful images!!!
Thanks so much Gary
I love your obvious infectious excitement in this video Richard, and all the amazing images. Obviously one of the most amazing nights we will see. And where was I, on plane over southern India 😂😂😂. Thems the breaks, but the video helps make me realise how amazing it was. Love the tribute to Alyn at the end.
Oh no Eric. Bad timing for that journey wasn't it. Who knows, we may see another one soon.
It was a night to remember, the overhead ribbons at 11:30 pm in Tassie was something I’ve never seen before. Great you got to experience it too. Thanks for sharing
Yes certainly was a wonderful show Jeff
Interesting the difference in colours , I’m in north east England and we had purples and blues and very little red . Amazing night
We always seem to get lots of reds Simon
6:40 Hi Richard you we're like a kid in a sweet shop and why not what a fabulous display I was lucky to get also over the house here in the UK what a great video if you never saw them again I don't know if you could beat that I am well pleased for you lovely tribute to alyn also cheers Richard 😊 😊
Thanks heaps for watching Brian, really appreciated.
Richard simply magnificent photos, the panoramas of the Silos, its silhouette and the other photos are fantastic, it was a memorable night across the planet. On Friday morning, I and 3 friends moved 260km south to the darkest area of Portuga, during dinner, which was still daylight, one of my friends and I received an alert about the Northern Lights, but we didn't pay much attention because we thought they were only for northern Europe, when we arrived at our location to photograph (Noudar Castle) I was the first to take a photo and I was incredulous with the white balance that I had put on the camera, the entire landscape was Pink and Red, but no, it was really a gigantic Northern Lights that reached 37º Latitude, we stayed taking photos until the sun rose.
Thank you for sharing this magnificent Southern night with us, a hug Richard. Beautiful tribute to Alyn 👏🙏
Yes it was quite magnificent wasn't it Mario.
Absolutely spectacular that must have been to witness. Thank you for taking the time to make a video so we could experience it as you did.
Thanks so much Andrew
Man o Man! I mean Man Alive! I don't know what I mean!
So crazy good. Exhilarating!
Haha, you know me too well Joan ...!!!!
Great results, Richard. And a nice little tribute to the memory of Alyn Wallace at the end, I'm sure he was checking the aurora's out as well!! Thank you for your inspiration!!
You're very welcome John, appreciate you watching.
What a Night Mr Tatti your truly a nightscape machine not only capturing so many amazing shots but film your adventure at the same time….such a shame Alyn couldn’t share this amazing night with us
Thanks a lot Aaron. Yes Alyn would have been in his element for sure.
So many great images! We were at our Star Party on a property between Geelong and Ballarat and managed to get under 3 hours of clear views South. It was such a magical experience. Also, nice tribute to Alyn - He is on my mind every time I try editing my images from that night.
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Without a doubt, one of the most magical nights in my memory!
Yes absolutely Rowland
Glad you got out to photograph it. It was truly an amazing and historic night. I felt all the same feelings you experienced as I was standing in the mountains surrounded by light beams. I get chills thinking about it. Congrats.
Thanks so much for your comments David, I'm pleased you got to see it.
Love this video, Richard! Your excitement was palpable. I could easily have been out there, if I was closer! Keep up the great work! What a great sky for a canvas! 😀
Yes a great sky canvas for sure Chris.
Thank you for that. What a special event. I loved that you mentioned Alyn.... He might just have played his part in that show...., I like to think that. 😊
Yes I tend to think so.
I have been waiting for this video, I figured you would go nuts. Thanks.
Haha, well yes that did happen a fair bit Steve.
