Balcony growing is the unsung hero of urban gardening. My fruits and veggies grew better than my plot at my local community garden because I didn’t have to worry about pest pressure. I’m impressed at how much they’re growing!
For sure! A lot of apartment balconies don't seem to get used very much so growing a bit of food on them could be really fun! It's also surprising to see how much can grow in such a small space. Thanks for checking out this video and have a great week :)
It's amazing how much food you can grow on a balcony. Mine is much smaller but I grow a lot on it. Having a worm farm is ideal for producing soil and fertilizer 👍 The visitors you get on your balcony are very colorful 🌈🐦 and so cute 🐕💛
It's wonderful to see people growing food in whatever tiny growing spaces they have, and Cheng Yee and Kevin's balcony is quite an amazing little testament to the ability to build in some food security into our lives wherever we are. Well done! Inspiring!
Ahhhh! I've been following them since they started posting on TikTok. 10th floor is scary high to me 😊 They post cooking videos as well. Great account to follow ❤
Beautiful girl & beautiful couple 🎉🎉🎉 They’re seem nice person!! Growing veggies & decorations gardening is great healthy habits!! It can avoid stressful & make you calm, living simple but happiness ❤❤❤ Congratulations youngful couples & bless your family 🎉🎉🎉 Keeps positive 🙌
Wonderful video, thanks for posting. I have an AreoGarden so herbs, spices and veggies can be grown indoors. It's great as a starter for veggies too, that can then be replanted outdoors once they start growing, which is what a friend does. My last harvest was dill, two types of basil, thyme, mint, parsley. Just plant food, water and lights ...had several harvests from the last batch. In fact I still have some dill that I dried. :)
Great video, really liked it. :) Growing veggies in small space myself. This year I grew tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, pak choi, and salad on our windowsills. And the typical herbs like peppermint, basil, chive. With this limited space there are no big harvests but its a lot of fun and so relaxing. Also using two worm bins. :)
So great to see. I live in inner west in Sydney thats north facing. I grow veggies on my small balcony too!! It’s so satisfying isn’t it. Keep growing.
Just came across your channel by chance and I am so impressed with your balcony garden. Your dog is so adorable too. I really love to have a little urban garden as I live in an apartment in Perth, but I have a phobia about worms and caterpillars, and I must admit it has prevented me from planting vegetables and fruits. I wish you both all the best, and happy gardening.
Balcony gardens are great. Managed to grow lettuce and carrots this time around after almost giving up. Radishes ended up as duds because I overwatered them. Definitely trial and error.
This is such a wonderful idea. Having on hand vegetables for dinner! Though you need a strict management of the space but it worth it. As they are high level they must have less bugs. Like very much there organization for composting as week. Wish we can live in Australia to do this all year! Great job congrats.
Totally agree! I also think that when growing in such a small space it's important to do research and find out what to grow to maximize production. It would be nice to have more "indeterminate plants" that keep giving you food throughout the season. Thanks for checking out the video :)
One could also consider what the most expensive vegetables are to buy. Growing your own Fennel/Anise can save grocery money if needing enough of it for example. Just a thought. We much prefer heirloom tomatoes over hybrids for flavor. Purple Cherokee is our favorite. A single plant is producing more than enough. Here in Tennessee we're still picking them mid October. As an extra bonus you can save heirloom seeds for the next growing season.
No swarf lemon tree?? LOL!! That courtyard space down below can easily become a garden!! Melbourne CBD really needs too become more greener that's for sure!!
Congrats on the garden. You mentioned you had aphids. I don’t know if this will work for you…I had 8 rose bushes in my yard. When I started them (as bare root) I chopped up some garlic cloves and put about 2 cloves worth around by the roots, but not on them. I never had a pest. AND, incase you’re wondering, no, they never smelled like garlic. 😄
Have you. Guyslooked into how much weight your balcony will hold ? Have you thought about what would happen if it fell? The people you would kill and be liable For ? Forgive the negative side of your beautiful experiences but it did come to mind 8:39 😊!
In Malaysia 🇲🇾, an Urban Agriculture program has been practiced specifically for residents in housing that have limited or no land. Various agricultural methods are used according to the needs of the area involved. This program has the cooperation of local government and central government agencies.
A problem with the compost shown in the video is that they put tea bags and paper waste in it. Tea bags are usually sealed with plastic and the dyed paper may have heavy metals and PTFE in the ink. Rule of thumb: only put organic waste into compost
You still get them even with no added nitrogen. I've found them on plants i grew in pots with depleted soil that i had not fertilized. It certainly gets worse if you do add some nitrogen.
I would be afraid of all that extra weight on a balcony that was meant to hold a couple of light weight deck chairs and a few people. Wet dirt and potted plants could weaken the structure, especially as many as they have on that balcony. Just saying.

What is the carbon footprint of having the dog?
@@erikvinnesi) Worth it, and ii) why d'you think the lefty, greeny do-gooders at BP coined the term carbon footprint?

That’s my experience too. Less pests
I have found the same to be true!
That’s good to know as I’m about to move into an apartment and still want to grow at least some tomatoes
I grew, probably over 4kg of tomatoes on my balcony this year. I am in southern Ontario, and surprisingly my tomato plants are still alive.
That is so nice that they are able to have a little garden even though they live in an apartment. Thanks Matt and Danielle ❤

Awesome, I just don't know who is more cute is it the couple or their precious fur baby 🤪 . I guess all of them ❤️🐕♥️
That dog is SO CUTE❤️ I’m very impressed with their gardening - ! Nothing like fresh, organic food. It just tastes better. 😊
Love it! gardening in small spaces is such a cool concept that I'm always looking to learn more about

The Royal Horticultural Society used to have a series of books on small gardens. Quite a bit was useful for balcony gardens.
Good info. Still available you think?
You two are both an inspiration! Thank you for sharing.
Such an amazing and inspiring story.
This balcony is exactly like mine it gets windy. I live in WA. This is the perfect video for me. Thank you.

Maybe need more perlite for drainage. I live in Scotland and it rains all the time but my radishes turn out ok.

excellent
Well done. I'd be curious to know how Lentils might grow in your specific micro climate. Keep it up.
Hell yeah!
Soil is very heavy. I hope that balcony can sustain that weight
A balcony is typically constructed to hold 50 - 100 lbs. of load per square foot
Hello, I really enjoyed this video, thank you. Are you able to tell me where you got the larger grey colour 5 tier planter. Thank you so much.
I’m too scared of heights.. I wouldn’t be able to go out on that balcony 😬
It would be fantastic if I lived in a place with no winter 😭
I'm curious about the dragon fruit plant. Does the weather affect its ability to give fruit? Cuz a tropical plant
That balcon is bigger than my kitchen :)
Can’t even get carrots to grow in my inground garden yet your growing them on your balcony 😭
Balconies have weight limits per square meter. Ive just started it now, and its a terrifying thought lol
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
i used to have a balcony garden but once things started to grow i couldn't keep the birds from setting up nests on my balcony and eating up everything
*Good point.* 😫

I’d love to know How many hours a week do you spend on it?
HELLO ARE IN TORONTO CANADA?
Hardly getting any insects like caterpillars eating the greens so high up😂
Wow, how on earth do aphids get up there. They really are the mysterious random annoying bug of the night. Lol
It’s possibly from the soil purchased from stores. It’s not uncommon that bug larvae are in garden soil.
How do you grow mulberries on a balcony? I love mulberries but I thought the tree's always became massive?
❤❤
👍👍✌️😋
👍👊
Probably have less problem with squirrels than I do on my half acre
I'm curious to know what there neighbors think about water run off onto their balcony or if they have an issue?
THERE, now there’s no reason for nobody to say I live in an apartment, unless you have no balcony.
This won’t happen in Michigan 😢
If we can grow flowers, vegetables are smarter to grow.
Wut
@@bibhasdmusic
Smarter to grow.
I tried to grow a garden on my balcony and they all died within two weeks😭
Awww that sounds devastating! Do you know what went wrong?
Yes let us know!
You overwatered them. Don’t do that the next time.
Over/under watering? Over/under fertilizing? If you use a reputable potting soil you shouldn't have any problems. Top soil in a pinch if amended.
@@ExploringAlternatives I think I overwatered them and also I don’t think the lighting was right :(

Aphids.. too much nitrogen.
You still get them even with no added nitrogen. I've found them on plants i grew in pots with depleted soil that i had not fertilized. It certainly gets worse if you do add some nitrogen.
.
You two people need to move out to the country. Buy a acre or even half acre and go wild. Youll be much better off.
id love to test these for heavy metals, im all for self sustaiability but this seems dangerous, and definitely not a universal solution
I think growing your own organic produce is a great idea.,
And would be less contaminated than store-bought.
Mom always said ya have to eat some heavy metals before ya die. All in moderation.
Where would the metals come from using reputable potting soil?
@@joewoodchuck3824 city air obviously!
My bet is that it might not be as clean as a rural garden but still probably way ahead of supermarket food.
I thought they would have rabbits and hens in the balcony... That's not food, that's good for your food! Go zero carb to survive.
I would be afraid of all that extra weight on a balcony that was meant to hold a couple of light weight deck chairs and a few people. Wet dirt and potted plants could weaken the structure, especially as many as they have on that balcony. Just saying.
BEEF steer being fed and watered on the deck makes more sense.
The dog would certainly be happier...😂
Oh do piss off.
