      @@michaelcrenshaw689 it's all his sound too. Most bands never sound as good as the studio album, REO always sounded better and I think Gary's playing was a big part of that.
      It has always been said that it isn't what you gather that matters, but what you are remembered for that counts. Gary will live on forever through his playing and sound. RIP Gary, keep rockin the heavens!

    I have to admit, I hadn't seen this before and haven't seen Gary Richrath in years and it's very hard not to be taken aback by his appearance when he first walks out on stage. But, then I watched this whole video and, by the end, I went from that feeling of being a little bit shocked, to a totally different feeling. We all have our demons that we fight in this life and Gary is a human being and no different from you and me. Good for him for taking the stage and doing what he does. He has an unmistakable tone and he always has and he still does. You used to always be able to tell an REO song by the tone of that lead guitar. I can close my eyes and still hear it on this recording. Sure he looks different. So do I. I was in high school in 1977. Now I'm 54 years old. Change is part of life. We just need to roll with it. Sounds like a song title. I wish him well on his journey and I enjoyed his performance here very much.

    Kind of dumb to be focusing on the physical nature of whatever Gary Richrath has going. But the anonymity of social media sure lets people say dumb things. It's so unfair to judge like what some people are doing here.
    No matter what, Gary Richrath was one of the most underrated lead guitarists of the 70's & 80's and this performance shows that he's still got it. Whatever he's gone through (and may still be going through), it's awesome that he's still able to share his awesome talent with us. I'll always be a fan of Gary Richrath, no matter what he looks like.

      Awesome comment, very kind & very spot-on. Watching/listening to Philbin's interview here on YT, REO's been trying for YEARS to get Gary back in the band...with conditions, of course (weight, substance use, etc.). And, for whatever reason, Gary wouldn't / couldn't do it. Hopefully, with Gary having a taste of "fan love" and audience appreciation, he can be motivated to get healthy. He was always a tennis "nut." That, for sure, would be part of it...

    • @patricksmith7492
      @patricksmith7492 9 років тому +7

      Scott Marty I'm with you there. He was way more talented than he got credited for. I'm not even a huge REO fan but I've heard him make short work of a Les Paul guitar like no one else can. Same goes with some of these "Hair bands" from the 80's; you may not like how they looked, but damned if they didn't still know how to play drums and guitars and sing. Now we have is fucking rock 'n rap bullshit like Linkin Park, etc.

    • @rimetime6423

      did you live in an alternative universe ?
      Where was Gary ever ''underrated'' ? I think that word is overused, Gary was and always will be a guitar icon, never underrated anywhere i went

    • @patricksmith7492
      @patricksmith7492 9 років тому +5

      "Underrated" because he rarely (if ever) makes any "Top [whatever] Guitarists" list from ANY magazine, show, or publication I've seen. Underrated is not a bad thing. I'm 36 and never had the chance to see him play live with REO, but I know a damned good guitarist when I hear one. Gary blows away just about most of the guys you see in the Top 20 lists - and I'm talking good guitarists. As far as his being underrated, it's because most people only care to judge by Top 40 songs on the radio (and he was still awesome in those), but they don't care to look up and watch him play live. Looks to me like he hasn't lost his ability even 1%. Believe me, there's plenty of "underrated" guitarists and whether or I like the band, I give credit where credit is due. How many people never liked the band Cinderella but don't realize Tom Keifer can and does play any type of stringed instrument in any style (especially blues) like no other? Again, live performances will show who's who, as studios can simply pull gimmicks. I should list a Top 10 most "underrated" guitarists (regardless of band or type of music) and see what reaction I get. I did earlier but not sure it got posted.

    • @denniscassley9992
      @denniscassley9992 9 років тому +6

      Cool comment!! I think the affection for Gary is, 1) Songwriting (Golden Country, Riding the Storm Out, Only the Strong Survive, etc.), 2) Stage Presence: He was a BLAST to watch on stage, the moves, the smiles, etc. 3) Perseverance & Leading the Band, for at least the first decade, 4) Empathy, for the substance troubles & resulting physical condition. Even if he doesn't make it back to looking like a matinee idol, hopefully he gets healthy & vital again. The fans -- & the band -- would CLEARLY love to embrace him again!!

    There’s something very profound about this performance. Clearly, he had changed a lot since his heyday and wasn’t the young, cute rockstar anymore. And you are instantly forced to realize your own mortality and passage of time when he first walks onstage. Then… he starts playing… and you realize… the soul never does get sick or age. He brings you back to your youth and we are all able to forget, if only for 5 minutes, how quickly this life goes by… how quickly our youth goes by. Rock and roll is the great equalizer. 18? 30? 60? Doesn’t matter! Music will give you back your joy.

Has Gary made a ton of mistakes, sure, but anyone who was around in the 70s when the band originally created all these tunes, well we are all over 50 now and I will be the first to say Ive screwed up plenty in the past too. Holy shit Gary was a monster player until the end. For someone I never actually met, I always loved this guy. Such an amazing guitarist who made one hell-of-an impression on my guitar playing so many years ago, back when REO was played on Mtv every hour on the hour. I've been so 'out of the loop' as far as most of the bands that I grew up listening to, that I didn't even know that he had passed. If every future guitar player starting out would listen to everything this guy ever played, they would have all they need plus some. The players like this who had their own very unique playing styles, are the best and make the deepest impressions, especially when they're as humble as he always was. It sucks so bad that substances and/or chemicals can make such a mess of people's lives when they're at their best, and take them down into the blackest pits of depression and shame. I know the depths of those pits very well myself. Nobody ever puts themselves there,,, you just wake up one day and you're there, and you can't even imagine mustering the strength and courage to climb back out. Anybody who's never been there will never understand. Anybody who thinks that he wasn't very well aware of the results that came from the unfortunate choices that he made, is nuts. We only have a little evidence of him in this condition, but he had to live with it every day of his life. I just hope that he found peace and happiness before he passed. RIP Mr. Richrath... The whole is going to miss you, and most will never even know they're missing you... I feel blessed to have seen, heard, and known of you.

    Gary Richrath was and still is my very favorite lead guitarist of all time! Not even a close second!! Many good guitarists can be copied. Not Gary! His
    Unique style has never been copied by anyone; including his replacement! That having been said, the very first time I saw him in this condition, I don’t mind admitting that I broke down and cried. Had I not known it was Gary, I would never had been able to guess it was him!! Had anyone shown me a picture with no caption, I would have never gotten it right!! I’m 70 years old. I choose to remember the old Gary; the one I watched amaze audiences in the 70’s when I was in the audience! I met Gary personally when the band was trying to get started and played many places in my hometown. We aren’t far from the U of I where they had their beginning! What a nice person he was! I choose to remember that Gary Richrath; not the one in this vid ! RIP Gary! You set the music world on fire!!😇🙏👍

    His playing is the same and his body mechanics are the same when he plays. He struggled with the booze and I'm speculating, but may be a result of liver disease. I think he understands how his looks have changed, give him some credit for having balls big enough to get up on a stage and play.

      I read somewhere that someone said that he had diabetes. Regardless Gary could still play like no other, and I would rather listen to him play, than the guy that took his place in REO. I'm not saying that the other guy isn't good because he is, but he just doesn't sound like Gary.
      RIP Gary! And keep rockin the heavens.

    It just makes me feel so sad to see the changes that probably we're a big part in his way TOO EARLY passing😢 I just hope to God he wasn't in too much pain, a man whose talents gave so many people so much enjoyment and pleasure in such beautiful music and watching those magic fingers just work their way up and down those strings and that poor guitar straining to keep up with him! I can't read a note or play an instrument at all but I did notice how he worked those controls on the body of that instrument!, it all went together his movement, and 'THAT SOUND' WOOOOW😲

    I agree that Gary never got the mass credit he deserved as a player, but real rock enthusiasts and those that study guitar know how amazing he was/still is. Gary was also one of the best looking rockers of all time, but anyone that makes comments about his looks is most likely under 50, because us old farts can appreciate what happens as we age. My own comments are limited to Gary's courage to get up there and tear it up at his age, particularly considering his battle with the bottle. He was and very much still is a guitar hero!

    Gary has a style all his own. It's not fancy. He's never been into any real effects other than a wah wah pedal. He did switch to a strat style with a whammy bar for the Life as We Know It album and tour, but for most of his life it's been Les Pauls. Lots of note bending and sustain. He was at his peak in the '70's, all the way thru Nine Lives. I didn't get the same vibe from his playing during the eighties, but he was still great. Whatever his personal issues have been, it's obvious he still knows his way around a guitar!

    I've been a guitar player almost all of my 50 year life and I respect the legends like Gods, but Gary Richrath, beyond a shadow of a doubt, was my favorite "guitar dude". In the day he has fun, charismatic and what a great style that was purely Gary. I have watched for him for years on the net and rumors of his health and or death were wide spread. 4 or 5 years ago a video showed up and he was sloppy and didn't look to healthy, I thought he must not be playing, but he was alive and right there on UA-cam, I am so happy to see him and as I watch him, I feel a tears forming for the guy and I hope it is around for a while and gets healthy. If you are not familiar with the good old days of REO Speedwagon, check out "You get what you play for" (I know there are better REO albums) and treat yourself to Gary Richrath's style.

He could've flown into another Flying Turkey Trot solo and these idiots would've still botched about something. The cool thing about live shows is that we are now allowed to record them.
