A lady from my church heard a couple at the mall speaking a language that sounded similar to when she speaks in tongues. She asked the strangers at the mall what language they were speaking and they said “Hebrew!”. So, she spoke in tongues out loud to them asking if they understood her and they said, “Yes, you’re praying for your mother!”
    That’s miraculous.

That would indeed seem like a word from the Lord.
Did your brother have an intentional message known to him? (as in Acts 2, where they knew what they were saying and praising, but we're speaking in tongues unknown to them, while heard by others in their own languages).

While in Bible class my pastor was praying in tongues. I heard very clear in my mind he was quoting Isaiah 61. After I told him, he explain he and his son were praying Isaiah 61 that morning. I then gave him a word that pertained to valentine signature candy and God calling him to intimacy and he explained his favorite candy is love signature candy.
Be careful not to limit the power of God. I sometimes hear what people are praying in the spirit in English and a lot is scripture. I do not know my pastor at a personal level.

I was just teaching on this on Monday. In our denomination it’s usually like prophecy where the interpreter who would stand and say what is being said and the speaker and interpreter would go back and forth just as you see interpreters do in “real life”, those interpretations are weighed as would any prophecy. There is also a lot of worship interpretation. I’ve had a girl would got saved, few moments later spoke in tongues and another lady who got saved the week prior interpreted, the message was God encouraging us to continue evangelising and saying how much people were being helped by our ministry. And then more people got saved because of what they saw. So you find a lot of encouragement and comforting also. That’s what really cemented my belief in these gifts.

I believe that speaking in tongues in a corporate setting is allowed in certain applications (when non believers aren’t present).
The context in 1 Cor 14 is about a clear message being portrayed to the church for edification. If the person leading the prayer meeting for example asks everyone to pray in tongues for 1 minute, that is not going against what Paul said. If the speaker were to speak in tongues, and not have an interpretation, then that’s going against ch14.
But if the whole congregation knows that it’s time to pray in tongues, there is no confusion there because everyone knows what’s going on and that isn’t a violation of ch 14

I frequently listen to a word of faith church online where the pastor is teaching (from the Bible) and frequently, the Holy Spirit will, thru a church member, interrupt and give and share his love and direction regarding the message. There is always an interpreter, and it always edifies the church and lets the church know that not only God is there but he’s listening. It’s wonderful. I wish I had the gift of interpretation, but I don’t. I’ve prayed for it, but I should probably pray more in tongues myself before I receive that gift.

I just want to encourage those asking "Why? Why do we need these if we have the scriptures?" The gifts give specificity to our lives in a way that scripture sometimes does not. The gifts help us to live more intimately with God (and often woth others). The gifts give us the privilege of participating in what God is doing beyond what we can do in the natural. Even an uninterpreted tongue in your bedroom is a participation in the work that God is doing to bring glory to Himself. The gifts are a gift!

I'm a very recent former cessationist, as in I began investigating spiritual gifts last summer, and didn't fully believe in them until earlier this year. The funny thing was I've had the gift of tongues for at least 5 years and was in denial. When I started studying spiritual gifts I was still under the impression that all tongues are a human language (not sure what I think now), so to "test" that I really had the gift I started Googling the syllables I was saying to the best of my ability (which wasn't great lol), BUT what I usually ended up getting was that the fragments I could get a translation for were praise or prayer, and they were usually in Urdu/Punjabi or possibly Hebrew. - Has anyone else had this interpretation experience or is it just me? lol - Anyhow, all this to say I'm encouraged to hear that tongues are usually interpreted as prayer!!

Also, on the question of "Why do we need tongues to (or another spiritual gift for that matter) edify?", it's been my experience that that's God participating with us and living within His church. Maybe that's partially what is meant by being "partakers of the divine nature." Before believing the gifts still exist today, I didn't feel or understand in what ways we were truly connected to God. He was in Heaven and He had given us this Book to live by, and one day we would be with Him that was all.

A helpful take-away for me from this conversation is the idea of delineating between a public space where uninformed/unbelieving people are present and a space where everyone present is mature in the gifts. I will have to think about this more. I am a pastor in the Foursquare Church and grew up in Foursquare. It is common during conferences, camps, etc. that the whole room is encouraged to pray in tongues if they have this gift. But as I've studied scripture I've become convicted that the practice of praying in tongues out loud in a group setting, is (at best) unwise and unhelpful, if not totally unbiblical. So for years, when in these settings, I've prayed in tongues but kept my voice low so that others couldn't hear. But I hadn't considered that perhaps at a pastors conference setting, where everyone present is mature and informed in the gifts, it may not be inappropriate to pray this way corporately. Still considering this, and open to feedback.

I am part of a non-denominational charismatic church and we definitely flow in this way. We call them believers meetings...They are technically open to the public as are all of our services, yet they are focused on the training and equipping of believers to continue the work of Christ. These are the times when we pray corporately in tongues because people under what is going on, they are learned. I have even seen it happen on a Sunday morning as well, but maybe 3 times in ten years and only when the pastor knows there aren't visitors present.

If no unbelievers or unlearned are present, it is not out of order. If an unbeliever or unlearned is present, God will be faithful to supply the interpretation of the people are willing to cooperate with what the Bible says and not act on their own accord. I understand how you’ve felt on this to and have be relearning what I just stated after looking at the text again and again.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEMATIC PRACTICE OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES AT CORINTH IN 1 COR 14?
23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
When I was a new Christian, someone told me that speaking in tongues without interpretation would drive people away from the gospel. "It is madness to them," I was told. I was confused and wanting to do the right thing, I stopped worshipping God in tongues during the corporate worship part of the service. I so wanted to live a life pleasing to God. Then in seminary, I asked a godly scholar, about this passage. He unpacked this for me in way that left me speechless. The answer was so obvious, yet I missed it.
The context is "the whole church comes together." (v. 23) So, we're talking about practice in community worship and fellowship. Look at the parallel structure.
      If.......all speak in tongues (v. 23)
      But if all prophesy.....(v. 24)
Whatever the practice, it was the same for tongues and prophecy. The "all" practice can only be "ALL AT THE SAME TIME" or "ALL IN SUCCESSION." There are no other options. But if it is talking about all at the same time, prophecy would be just as confusing and disorderly as tongues. Think of the whole congregation all reading from a different portion of Scripture at the same time. This would be just as unedifying to the mind as all praying in tongues at the same time. So, this passage clearly does NOT address the problem of all speaking at once. Now, let's consider all in succession. If this practice refers to both gifts, the passage makes sense. Imagine a service in which each person stands, speaks in tongues without interpretation, and sits down! Indeed, unbelievers or ungifted attendees would think they are crazy--UNLESS THEY ALSO INTERPRET. (1 Cor 14: 14-19) All prophesying in succession would make perfect sense of the passage.
So, what does 1 Corinthians say about a congregation worshipping God in tongues. Nothing. The Scripture doesn't address the issue. People worshipping are not addressing the congregation but God. I've been in non-English speaking congregations in which everyone has hands raised and is praising God in Chinese, Tagalog, Spanish, and tongues. I was not confused. I don't think they are mad. Their words don't need interpreted. They are not talking to me, teaching me, or addressing me; they are addressing God. The principle that applies is 1 Cor 14:39-40, "So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But let all things be done decently and in order." Someone yelling at the top of his or her voice every week during worship in tongues or prophecy or constantly interrupting a teaching time with tongues or prophecy might still be out of order. I felt so freed with this clearer understanding of Scripture. If I am worshipping, with my indistinguishable voice blended into the din of praise, no interpretation is needed. I am using the gift in the context of worship and prayer not to address the congregation. The practice stands up to Biblical scrutiny.

I have a question: in you guys experience, does someone with the gift of interpretation actually hear the tongue in a language that they can understand, or does God speak to them separately about what was said. For example, if a group is “practicing” the gift of interpretation, should they all listen to the tongue and see if it comes to their ears as a language they understand, or should they listen to the tongue and then pause to ask God what was said? If both, what is the most common way you see it done? If it was the latter way, how do you protect against you yourself or someone else simply coming up with something that sounds good from their own mind as the interpretation? Thanks!

Super helpful distinction made between practicing in the church service and outside the church service. I had never thought of that-thanks! Same seems to go with prophecy. No other prophets seemed to be around to test Agabus' prophecies.
Something I'm still confused on: If the gift of interpretation is a "visiting" gift like healing (I forgot what you called it... not a permanent gift), and you never know whether someone in the church has it at the moment until the tongue is spoken, doesn't that effectively make it impossible to know whether an interpreter is present, and impossible to practice it in the church service? It only makes sense to me if "interpreter" is something like an office or a known gift, or the tongue has to be in someone's native language.

In contrast, I think it is clear in vs 9-11 together that Paul means people in general will think you are speaking into to the air, even though you yourself know you are speaking to God and edifying yourself as he already said prior. He even continued in vs 13 and said again, speak in tongues and pray that you would interpret it so the church can be edified, and said that he does it more than all, but that he would always will to speak intelligible words in the gathered assembly to be certain people were taught. My question as it relates to the concept of known human languages vs heavenly/angelic languages that no one understands is this…
Isn’t it more likely exegetically that the reason why what they tongues speaker is uttering is a “mystery” and that they’re “speaking to God” and “no one understands” … isn’t it more likely that the reason for that is that the persons present in the congregation just don’t know the language being spoken rather than creating a totally different category of tongues speaking?
Especially since the tongues of angels thing isn’t definitive. Idk I’ve never found the argument for a separate category of tongues to be very persuasive. It seems much more natural to the context of 1 Corinthians 14 that we’re still talking about known human languages. Especially since later down in the passage in the Isaiah quote .. human languages were in view there. And then after that where it says “there are many different languages in the world and none of them is without meaning”… that in the world there… idk when I hear schreiner especially make the case for known human languages, it’s very strong and persuasive versus the “separate category view” ..
    What do you guys think?

Hi there, guys. Love your channel! A question: it seems the issue is confusion to unbelievers and not simply a corporate setting. Would it be OK for instance for a group of believers (insiders not outsiders as I think that the early church had these kind of "closed " meeting ie. love feasts and the Lord's Supper as well as public meetings where everybody was invited and welcomed to come together and pray and worship together, where everybody has some form of understanding of praying tongues and in the spirit and singing in the spirit and that is speaking and singing to God, and that it is for edification of self and that that communication and edification of self could /should lead to also receiving direction/unction/word from God. for instance, if people are encouraged to pray corporately out loud, communicating with God, one is not really able to hear everything that everyone else is praying and that might also be very confusing to people that are not accustomed to this practice. Conversely, I have personally experienced in a meeting of believers that have received this gift to pray in the spirit that one is able to pray in the spirit and be fully able to hear what is being prayed in the understanding of a believer in the group. Something that is virtually impossible to do if everyone is praying out loud with their understanding. would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I find frequently people who "pray in tongues" pretty much repeat the same 2 or 3 syllables in quick repetition. Is this a legit form of tongues? (I'm a continuationist but at the same time I realize that just because people call something _______ doesn't necessarily mean it is __________. So far no one has interpreted.) In a small prayer gathering in a church without visitors I'm like "okay whatever" but they're not afraid to do this out in public while prayer walking (loudly). I'm much more hesitant about practicing that. That seems to open up the door for God to be profaned instead of celebrated or worshiped by on-lookers.

I have wondered the same thing about those who only speak 2 or 3 syllables. On the optimistic side, they're saying"praise God" over and over in tongues; on the pessimistic side they are not saying anything, just making noise. I hate to say this but a lot of the times that I have seen tongues being spoken I strongly suspect that it is fake. I don't want to believe this, and I sure am not the one who can tell whether it is true or not, it's just a bad feeling I have inside. I would love to see true tongues spoken and a true interpretation. That would make me so happy

If not, are you totally surprised later as to what you actually said when someone else interprets/translates whatever you said? I ask this question sincerely since I don't speak in tongues myself and because when I speak English, my native language, I always set out to speak in accordance with my own prior thoughts and so I'm always aware in advance of what I intend to say as I say it. Michael you mentioned that in Acts 2 those impacted by the Spirit, and speaking in tongues, were speaking in human languages because people from various locations understood them. What is your view on this? Peter says these men are not drunk as you might suppose, for it is only 9 in the morning. Now if a Japanese man walked into Covent Garden in London and heard another man speaking Japanese , and the man was English in his appearance, the Japanese man might be astonished that an Englishman had such a great command of Japanese, but he would probably not consider him to be drunk, just well educated. Therefor it seems to me that the tongues speakers in Acts 2 are speaking an angelic tongue (they sound drunk to visitors), nevertheless some (or many, or all) hear them in their own language, which, since the Holy Spirit is powerfully present, is in fact mass spiritual gifting for the interpretation of an angelic tongue.

There are three different occurrences in the New Testament regarding tongues. The first was on the day of Pentecost where the people heard in their own language. A representation of everyone would here the gospel. Then there is an tongue that comes forth in a congregation and then either the giver of tongues or someone else interprets the tongue and this always edifies the body of believers. If you are used to hearing tongues, you will immediately recognize this type of tongue. Then their is the private prayer language that is used to edify the individual believer. If God can confuse languages at the Tower of Babel, then he certainly can have a prayer language that is spoken to Him and it’s by the Spirit and you are participating in praying the will of God.

Note: Scripture is at the end.The word of God instructs us to sing spiritual songs and we are to lift eachother up as we celebrate and praise the Lord. I believe if the Holy Spirit is moving in a corporate gathering, the worship leader does not have to instruct everyone to sing in the spirit. Everything we do unto and by the Lird should be natural. Anything a part from Him is manufacturing His presence. While in worship we engage in heaven while on earth and that should be an everyday natural thing...including corporate gatherings. We are set a part as a holy nation and peculiar people bringing forth praise at all times. So of course when a non believer comes into a corporate worship setting, it will seem awkward because they are of the world. Only God can grow a person into understanding His ways. He calls us to Him and we have free will to gain understanding.Colossians 3:16

    1. How are we telling the accuracy of the interpretation? How can we verify especially if there’s only one interpreter present?
    2. How are tongues not a sign to a unbeliever, when it literally says in 1 Corinthians 14:22, “Tongues then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbeliever’s “. Also practically speaking if believer speaks a tongue that unbeliever knows that believer didn’t previously know would that not qualify as a sign?

Of course gifts exist today, the Bible says so. Just a basic thought on the first 10 minutes here, it appears you have built your own presuppositions on the gift of Tongues and the evidence or personal tongue in Acts and other places. The git of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12 is for the edifying of the body and Paul is clear that Tongues are for edifying the person who speaks.
Tongues only edifies the body or another person in the body, not just a group in the body, when there is an interpretation in chapter 12. We do not see this anywhere in the book of Acts. And each time in Acts every single person spoke in Tongues not just the person God chose to speak to edify the body.
You are Charismatics without healthy roots in Pentecost, and you thing acknowledging some wrong doctrine in some Pentecostal circles, as is in All others, that you can ignore the strengths God has give those who believe the Bible about Tongues.
Obviously if there was ONLY the gift of Tongues as mentioned in chapter 12 then only a hand full of people would benefit from being edified by the Holy Spirit praying secrets and wisdom to God. You have serious root issues about Tongues, yet people are listening to you.
Paul alludes to the personal use of Tongues and that it is for everyone, I wish all pray in Tongues, in chapter 14, but his main topic is correcting the Corinthians who fell behind in NO gift on how gifts listed in chapter 12 should be used in a public time of TEACHING/PREACHING.

Interpretation of tongues was demonstrated on Pentecost when ALL the people heard the words of the apostles in their own languages. It only requires reading what the Holy Spirit revealed through Paul in his letter to the Corinthians. But then again, the RCC and the Reformers had their own agendas and weren't about to pay attention to any wisdom given from above. That's WHY false doctrine is prevalent in almost all denominations today. Jesus still asks, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord and do not do what I say?"

In first Corinthians when it says speak in the tongue of man and angel people assume the tongue of angels is heavenly and no one understands it. Three centuries before Christ and for centuries after Christ we have writings that show the thought that the primordial language was Hebrew. What that means is an angel taught Adam how to speak Hebrew. At the tower of babel they all spoke Hebrew. Abraham continue to speak Hebrew. So the tongue of angels is Hebrew. The tongue of man is all other languages. I believe context matters. Not just what’s written but also what’s in the culture around them at the time it is written. So why what I just said matters. Interpretation of tongues is actually interpretation of a worldly language. The babbling in my opinion is not the gift of tongues. Just because someone says the thoughts you have in your head and the babbling you can do go together and that equals tongues does not make it tongues. It makes it not a miracle to anyone. There’s no apologetic you can give for that. It would convert no one. There’s no miracle in it so no one is blown away and says oh wow that’s amazing God is real. Instead they just hear babbling and have to take your word on it that that actually is from God.

So what language do angels speak? Or another question, why does Paul tell the Corinthians that when he speaks in tongues that no man understands. Why does he specifically call them unknown tongues? And finally, if the tongues were real languages used to communicate the gospel message, then why would we even need a gift to interpret them? Wouldn't the hearer who needs that message be able to comprehend with the gift of interpretation?

    • @UncensoredChristian

@@BEABEREAN10 “What language do angels speak?”
It seems that scripturally they speak whatever language the recipient of the message speaks. How else would they communicate with OT figures like Abraham or Moses without speaking Hebrew and then also communicate with NT figures in Greek or Aramaic. The same way God can communicate with believers of all languages.
“Why does Paul tell the Corinthians that when he speaks in tongues no man understands?”
This is assuming that the tongues in question are some unknown language (which goes to your next question), however if the tongues are of the same nature as what we see at Pentecost than they would be known languages. Imagine that Paul is speaking in tongues to a group of Hebrew speaking and Greek speaking people, but the tongue that Paul is speaking is another language like Chinese, in that scenario nobody would understand what he is saying.
“Why does he specifically call them unknown tongues?”
He doesn’t. “Unknown” tongues is not found in any of the original manuscripts for 1 Cor 14. If you look at modern translations like ESV or NASB you will see that they redact the word “unknown” since it is not in the original text.
“If the tongues were real language used to communicate the gospel why would we need an interpreter”
Simply put if someone is speaking in a foreign language wether a real language or a spiritual language it would have to be interpreted if the audience does not speak that language.

@@UncensoredChristian good input I appreciate it! My quest though still stands, even when you remove the word "unknown" the text still says that the tongues Paul is talking about is not for man, and it says no one understands him.
1 Corinthians 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
Notice Paul even says they are mysteries. This seems pretty unknown to me.
I am not in any way saying tongues is ONLY unknown, but to say that they always have to be known languages is dishonest. When Paul says no one understands, that's what he means.
Also to say that because angels communicate to men in man's own language means that they don't have their own heavenly language is a fallacy. If I know multiple natural languages and you hear me speaking to someone in Spanish, you can't simply assume I don't also communicate to my family and friends in English. It just happens to be what you hear at that time.
Also, I agree that if God gave me the ability to speak Chinese to a congregation of people who don't speak Chinese, then the gift of interpretation would be needed. But, again, there are people in the world that understand Chinese, so why would Paul say no one understands and that it's communication between you and God.
In summary, between Acts and Corinthians, I see the Bible teaching two kinds of tongue's. Known tongues to minister to men, and unknown, mysterious tongues that ministers to God, but can be interpreted to bring edification to the body of Christ.
Let me know you thoughts! 😃

      @@BEABEREAN10 Thanks for the response!
As far as I can tell you are equivocating the idea of tongues not being spoken to men and tongues not being for man. 1 Corinthians 14 never says that the tongues are “not for man” as if they are impossible for any human to understand. Rather in the context Paul is writing about that tongue is for communication between the individual and God.
This doesn’t mean that speaking in tongues is only done to speak to God because Paul tells them later in v5 that it’s possible for another person to interpret the tongues.
I agree, the tongues would be mysteries especially if the language being uttered is foreign to you. If someone was speaking to me in Chinese it would all be mysterious and unknown to me regardless of if they are speaking in the Spirit that’s why Paul says that the tongues would be mysterious to a bystander unless an interpreter was present.
“But to say that they always have to be known languages is dishonest. When Paul says no one understands, that’s what he means.”
I disagree that it is dishonest. It seems fair to understand tongues as being human languages that most people don’t speak. After all that is the example we see play out in Acts 2.
Let me be clear, I never stated that angels do or don’t have their own language that they communicate. I simply stated that in every instance in scripture that God/angels speak to man it appears that it is done in a human language. The problem is when we try to assume/force some unknown angelic language onto the meaning of “tongues” when the use of “tongues” in places like Acts refers to human languages.
“There are many people in the world that understand Chinese, so why would Paul say no one understands and that it’s communication between you and God”
Because if you are speaking in a language that is unknown to the audience then the only one who would understand would be God. Paul points out the importance of speaking in a tongue that is either understandable or interpretable in 1 Cor 14:9-11.
Once again if “no one understands” the tongue then it would be foolish for Paul to expect that it’s possible to have an interpreter. Now to be clear I’m not claiming that the spirit has no influence here. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for someone who only knows one language to be able to interpret another language through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Anyways I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

@@UncensoredChristian good stuff here! Keeps me on my toes! I think you may have missed the point I made about there being two kinds of tongues mentioned in the bible. There is the supernatural mysterious tongues that is between you and God but could also be interpreted by a gift of the spirit to bring edification to the whole body. This kind is often where it would be seen as tongues of angels since no man understands it except God, but not limited to that either as it could be a natural language. And then there is the 2nd kind of tongue like we see in Acts 2 which is known human language's given supernaturally to minister to people. I think the Bible is very clear about these two kinds of tongues.
I do find it a bit interesting that you say "if no one understands then it's foolish for Paul to expect that it's possible have an interpreter"...this is disheartening because you assume that the holy spirit would not be able to give someone an interpretation of a language no one understands. But please do this for yourself, pretend for a minute you believe there is a language of heaven that men don't know, now why couldn't the HS give us this language AND also give us the gift to interpret this language? Do you really think that's not possible? It seems to me this would be the exact reason we would need a GIFT to interpret the tongue is because no man can understand it.
Secondly, I think you are wrongly equating the words translation and interpretation here. Paul says there is a spiritual gift of interpretation, as the Spirit wills.
      Interpretation=overall message
      Translation= word for word
      - in acts 2, they didn't need the gift of interpretation by the spirit to know what was being said because they knew the language and could translate it back to others word for word. The tongues were supernatural, the hearing and translation was not. This is different from the example in 1 cor 14 where Paul says to pray that you'd interpret it since he realizes that there is no one present to translate it naturally, so it requires a gift so you can gather the overall message of the mysterious language to edify the body. Again, this could be a natural language and no one who speaks it is present, but I don't think it's an accident that Paul mentioned tongues of angels in this same context of spiritual gifts.
Again, thoughts are appreciated! I love this stuff!

You can speak in tongues, to show or manifest the anointing of the Holy Spirit. There is a relationship between the presence and power of the person of the Holy Spirit and his gifts. If we speak in tongues as a believer, we are allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through us to the Father and the Son. We are participating in the Body of Christ. We are speaking languages gifted to us by the Holy Spirit. This is not even realized by most believers. Interpretation in tongues comes the same way that prophecy comes. The Holy Spirit shows the meaning to the mind of the believer or provides a realization or revelation of it. This can be the result of the believer listening to the message in tongues in the church and praying, "Lord, if you are willing provide me the interpretation". Why not just prophecy if the goal is to communicate a message that is understood? There are a couple of reasons why tongues is a separate gift. The Holy Spirit may want to perfect praise through the believer. Using human languages this might not be possible. To this I would say it is a correct rendering of Matthew 21:16. Yes Jesus used it in a different context but the conviction he gives me is it is totally appropriate in terms of an expression of tongues. Tongues can be a prayer and following on Romans 8:26. It can of course also be a message to the church when accompanied by interpretation. In relation to not everyone has the gift of tongues, this is sometimes forwarded as an excuse for not speaking in tongues ie "not everyone has to", but tongues is available to everyone through the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Jesus wants everyone to be baptised in the Holy Spirit just as much if not more than he wants us to follow him and identify with him through baptism in water. Being baptised in the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues is a matter of obedience to the Lord. Tongues as a message to the church is not the same as this though. Not everyone can give a message in tongues and interpretation. In church speaking in tongues is different from your personal prayer language which you can exercise following the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I deal with some of these issues in my videos on my channel.

Tongues in a church has more of a cadence and phrases to it than personal tongues. It is more in the form of a message. It is the Holy Spirit speaking to the Church. If you want the interpretation of a message in tongues you need to firstly ask the Lord for it. He will give it if you are bold, full of faith and ready to step out and begin. The Lord wants to speak to us more than we want to hear from him. You can ask the Lord for the message in tongues AND the interpretation. Like a prophecy, as you begin, trusting the Lord to take what you are offering him in your beginning in faith and boldness, you will find the Holy Spirit can meet you there and take what you begin with and give you a revelation. Receiving a revelation from the Lord is an amazing experience. God will also give you the interpretation if you ask as you should be ready to give the interpretation if no one else starts out. Again you are concerned to show the Lord, to give what he gives you and only what and as he gives it to you. Personal tongues isn't a message to people and therefore might not have this form. A revelation comes as a spontaneous and unfolding realization provided by the Holy Spirit. Then there is the opportunity if you ask God for the interpretation and someone else gives the interpretation it is very edifying when the interpretation they give is the same interpretation that you received by revelation of the Holy Spirit. This is the ministry of confirmation which you can also participate in as a believer. The same ministry of confirmation applies to prophecy.

Is there any spiritual gift that was meant for personal edification? I do not see any evidence of that. It would seem to me that any gift was always meant for the edification of the church. The word for tongues in Greek is glossa and there's nothing that suggest it was anything other than an earthly language. When it comes to the language of angels, all interactions people had in the bible with angels appear to involve use of earthly language. I do not see anywhere where the spiritual gift is used for personal benefit. What am I missing?

There’s no such thing as a Tongue of Angels man.. read the scripture again my guys. Paul was being hyperbolic. If you know that In Acts 2 it was known languages that they where speaking why do we have to insist that this is something we need to be practicing? It’s God that distributes this gift according to the need. I think That advent of Pentecostalism and Charismatic Movement over inflated something that has been historically understood within the Church.. I am not a Secessionist but, I can actually say that this Gift was unique to the fist century church or the early church because of the walls of geography made it hard for people to understand languages… Today we have Google translate. Some guy in my church was speaking in tongues and the dude next to him was translating and they were no unbelievers there. Completely out of order man.

There may not be a tongue of angels, but there very well could be as well right? We don't actually know for sure. But one thing for sure is that Paul actually talks about an unknown tongue that when he prays, no man understands. So if we say that all tongues should be known languages, then Paul is contradicting this rule. Not to mention, if they are always known languages used to speak to others present who speak another language, then why would we even need a gift of interpretation? It seems to me, the interpretation gift is specifically for the time when unknown tongues are being spoken. This could be angelic language as Paul alludes to, but again we cannot be 100% sure. But Paul is clear it's not always human languages, don't you agree?
