The painting is great. I really appreciate the detailed explanations of how he worked, which is often lacking in other videos about Sargent.
Thanks! You might really enjoy the next video I’m working on now!
This painting is nothing short of a visual symphony, harmonizing colors and forms.
Thank you so much!
Just came across your videos. Youre a great teacher and painter. Appreciate your dudiliegence to find articles on sargeant and sharing them. His technique truly is the best. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks and welcome!

Lovely master copy of Sargent's painting ❤. Thank you for sharing and simplifying the whole painting process. I'm glad to have stumbled upon your channel. This video inspired me to pick up my brushes and do portraits again! Cheers 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Really nice painting and video Patrick! Cheers!
Thank you!
Beautiful rendition! It's so inspiring how you convey your technique. I really appreciate the way you explain each detail. Looking forward eagerly to seeing more of your work!

I think you may well be a reincarnation of Sargent!!! Just beautiful!!
HA I wish... I'm just me though
Gorgeous result! and the changes done in the flipped painting stage were so significant!
It helps so much!
Deserves a subscribe❤
Thank you Patrick. I found you today and Subscribed. I love the idea of copying the masters.
Awesome! Thank you!
Very well done sir 😊 thanks for sharing
thank you!
You should make live tutorials for portrait like Yupari Artist, it’s so helpful and your vision is amazing.
I’ll check out his stuff, thanks!
Can you make a video about how to sight size ? I always struggle with that method
Wii of course 🥖 I was sight sizing this off my phone but it would have been hard to explain here
Nice!
Thank you!
👍👍👍
🙏🙏🙏
Amazing! May I ask which particular brush you are using?
Thank you! I was mostly using Utrecht bristle filberts here!
great video and copy!!! how long did it take you?
Thanks! The footage was around 4 hours before I sped it up. I took a few breaks here and there, but this was done in an evening
legitimately an excellant sargent copy, you captured his bold brushwork and colour variation very well. I`m curious how you developed this skill, i can only paint grisailles at this point, whenever i try colour i always get the values and tones wrong compared to my black and whites :/
Over a long time, but there was a period of my life where I went to an academy and drew and painted all day everyday for almost 4 years.
One point about color is that it’s tied together to the value. Color is light and vice versa. I don’t think it’s so important to focus on grisaille. If you get the right color you will have the right value. Great exercise is doing loads of small 6x8in mastercopies in color
@@patrickokra doing small 6x8 mastercopies is an interesting idea. Im guessing this basically means a tiny portrait where i need to simplify the tones into big simple planes of colour? Also, how would you recommend to move from monochromatic bust/cast paintings to full colour portraits? thanks so much
It’s definitely easier to start with a limited palette, and add colors over time as you get comfortable/feel the need to push your chroma.
And yup, on a way you can consider them as color studies. Just gotta get those reps in, better to do dozens and dozens of small studies at first to really get comfortable with color mixing
@@patrickokra hey patrick, ive been doing colour studies the last 2 weeks, since im on uni break, about 8x8, using sight size, how would u recommend transitioning from these small colour studies, to larger, full size studies?
What a great video, I really dig the way you explain the process of the mastercopy. I'd love to try a portrait out, do you have any recommendations for a first try on a mastercopy of Sargents? I've never done a portrait and I am new to painting still.
Pick something you want to have in your studio, like if you have any of your own favorites from him! It might be a really good idea to pick one of Sargent’s early portraits that were “unfinished”, those would be a good lesson in simplifying when painting
@@patrickokra Great I'll give it a try, thanks!
Patrick this is absolutely wonderful.
I have seen many Sargent copies, but this one is one of the best I came across
Thank you very much!
Beautiful job! I appreciate the historical information too.
How do you mount and frame the paper?
PVA, gatorfoam board, and a heat press
Where did you go for training? Do you provide online classes with feedback?
I went to school at a school that is now closed, but most of my teachers now teach at Lyme Academy in Connecticut. And I actually have a patreon with a mentorship tier for one on one training - patrickokra on Patreon! Thanks!
What were you using as a reference, were you just painting from an image on you phone?
Yup- basically 🤷♂️
This looks very much like Sargent to me
thank you!
