- My interpretation of how John Singer Sargent got a likeness from his sitters. This isn’t the complete story, but this is my interpretation of how he rose to such ability.

Who drinks while they record! WTF, slurp slurp, no one needs to hear that, jeez, it's like a gross sound effect board. Slurp, sniffle, cough, burp, clear throat. I'm outa here
Slurping your coffee makes for an unpleasant viewer experience. It distracts from your factual content which is interesting.
Also the pencil spinning. 🙄
Paused at 3 min just to read what others may have thought about frequent slurping and throat-clearing... Yep. I rest my case.
It’s annoying, takes away from the video…..
i’m dropping at 1:14
don't drink when you are talking into a microphone !!!
One thing mentioned in Sargent's biography by Evan Charteris was that he cared more about the shape of the head than anything else. According to Sargent, if the shape of the head was correct, then the eyes, nose, mouth, etc. were just adornments. He scrapped many a painting where he wasn't content with the shape of the head. Because this goes against common teaching I tried it and ended up with a likeness that was so accurate, it was astonishing. So the man had a unique approach that I think most artists aren't aware of.
Thanks for your comment-- I haven't read the Charteris bio, but I'm glad to know this fact. I've been letting Sargent's work lead me for decades-- warned by colleagues that I should choose a hero whose works are more "accessible", less polished. But the immense value of Sargent's work is always his return to simplicity. The presentation is surprisingly spare, given how well he works with likeness. Any decent portraitist would benefit from his work.
Some of these *slurps* are devious bro😭
yeah I couldnt take the video seriously because of the slurps and coughs etc. this also doesn’t teach you to draw like Sargent - it shows you how to copy what Sargent processed and translated to paper.
I do find the slurping very distracting
Bro loves his coffee ☕️ 🙃
Still slurping your coffee down at 6.42, I had to switch off, rude and a bit disgusting!
Me too. No subscribe from me
Came to say this as well. Can’t make a 15 minute video without slurping down a beverage? No one wants to hear that.
I suggest you put your light source to the right so your hand doesn't cast a shadow onto your paper. There is also a glare on your reference. Ditch the drink. I'd like to see this as a larger demo. Thank you for sharing.
Sargent is a favorite, and your analysis seems spot-on, and interesting. But that SLURPING!
I thought I could hang on, but I was out at 3:29!
I was expecting a toilet flush at some point.
Good job. I tapped out at 2:18. Sorry but it’s disgusting.
I left the video at the exact same time. I have an incredibly low tolerance for eating and drinking noises and this made my skin crawl which was a shame because I liked the information in the video so far.
3:28 for me. I'm sure there's more valuable information in this video, but I'll never know. I can stand slurping and eating sounds. To think some people seek out whole videos of this stuff. No thanks! I'm still subbed though.
Blinking slurping is so distracting. Thanks for the advice though!
I couldn't listen and had to turn off the sound because of frequent slurping and throat-clearing😖 . I put automatic legends
Great Info! I actually enjoyed the laid back slurping! F the system
The constant sipping is irritating AF.
Slurping?
I trained as a fashion designer but also did art school and when a young person asks me how to get to a certain level, I say "draw every day, draw all the time". One day one of them said " but surely not on evenings or at weekends too ? " of course you have to make it like breathing, second nature, there is no mystery and no get one great drawing you sometimes have to do fifty bad ones.
Slurping techniques
Very interesting and helpful.
Good information. I don't call myself an artist but I enjoy skecting/drawing ... at time I get fustrated and I leave it alone and come back it give me a fresh look as to what I'm seeing on my skecting.
This is applicable to drawing any thing 😮shape design rocks as my favorite technique 😎
Love your explanations! I need to study the rest of your videos
slurp.....slurp......slurp
I know, hilarious, especially with the throat cleaning every few seconds.😂
Omg i stopped watching. He’s lost a subscriber
Why do men always do this in videos and podcasts.
As if we like hearing it.
@@paulwoodford1984😮 oh no
i know. He’s awful @@silverblue73
This is awesome. Thank you!!! I can’t wait to watch your other videos - I feel like I’m on the same wavelength :-)
Excellent information, but difficult to watch with the light shining on the paper and the shadow of your hand preventing us being able to see what you are demonstrating.
Agree, and agree with previous comments pencil spinning, sniffling, coughing, coffee drinking, voice was “drifting off” sorry but not a good presentation of possibly good info. I had to stop watching also.
I'm right here with you, I have a migraine inching it's way in and the glare was too much for me. Sucks since the info is good.
Great presentation and insights, thank you.
Great video except for slurping of the coffee pretty annoying
I am because of we. Thank you this was very well explained and reinforced
This is great. I guess others want the same cookie cut video essay format. Super personable and easy to follow. Thanks for the content
😂😂😂😂😂
Great info! 🙌
Alot of wisdom here, but I wonder if Sargent's drawing was actually more conventional, while the essence of his painting technique was to make each brushstroke -- each patch of color -- expressive, from far away. That is, don't focus on abstract contour (drawing outlines of shapes) but on a dab of dark paint (with a big brush) as the shadow in the beard, or dab of light ochre as the cheekbone. Then gradually zero in on details, all the while stepping back to assess the whole. I'd guess that's what you do too when you paint (although I obviously could be wrong).
Great video thanks!
Drop the drinking, it is annoying...
Nope
Oh , man, the sound of your drinking tea is killing your good presentation, please watch for it ! may be American do like it , but , many of other cultures do not like the sound of your mouth. Thank you.
Hmm, I haven’t heard a single sound of sipping since I was so impressed with author explaining the techniques. Thank you
Loved the info but had to stop watching because of the noise you make with your throat and nose!
One can only hope that your production skills eventually approach the value of your content.
Great video! Thank you for your exegesis. I’m always looking at Sargent’s work I think he’s the greatest artist of the 19th Century.
Quit snorting and quit twirling your pencil.
Shhhluurps....gulp. Nice.
Great video. Had to stop watching though. The slurping became too much.
Thx for the video! I naturally came to this understanding of shapes and how to for a whole object using them. I must say though that if I focus on copying the shapes only, I start making more and more mistakes with overall picture. I can copy shape 1 correctly, then when I copy the adjacent shape 2 i can copy it a little smaller than it is in reality and so on. Shape after shape mistakes compound and I got screwed with overall proportions. To avoid it, I get the general "shape" of the whole picture first and then fill it with shapes.
Good points w getting the bog picture and losing lighter elements during squinting 😆
Yep squinting is where its at.
This is great information. Sargent is so compelling. On another note, editing software is easy to use. Give it a shot.
Yes it's a skill which DEMANDS 24 hour dedication which is where the talent comes in. Sargent already was, study him, learn, copy, then work, complete works. Admiration can lead to a stagnation of your own work!
Good video ..but please dont drink coffee slurping while talking ...
I'm just realising that I was already doing this at a completely subconscious level haha but now that I realise I actually do this, I think I will do it much better as a caricaturist, which in my opinion difference for portrait not just because of interpretation and humour, but mostly because of catching the whole person (likeness, mannerisms, etc)
Sound effects 😨
I really like this video format, and PLEASE do keep drinking and clearing your throat etc. by all means! Made it way more relaxed and made me smile
And of course the content itself: Absolutely great man ❤
❤
This a great video. Thank you so much ♡
It's like music. How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
You have a drinking problem that is interfering with your presentation. Burping, sniffing and coughing don’t help either. I’ll have to get the info elsewhere.
Excellent Video Please recommend supplies a Charcoal set and Graphite Paper
Nice video
Thank you so much sir!, very educational for beginner artist like me
The slurping, pencil spinning, etc are distracting from your message
Be careful to not have the glare on the photos. We can't see what you're talking about then.
I need 1 hour of slurp asmr asap
To anyone bothered by slurping, watch it at 1.5 or 2x speed, definitely less irritating lol
This may have been great information but all the sniffling, throat-clearing, drink slurping, pencil twirling, mug shuffling, and the white monstrosity strapped to your wrist made it unbearable for me to watch and even begin to concentrate on the material being presented. It's too bad because I was really looking forward to your insights.
He provided us with great info for free, and you had to write that comment so maliciously.
Constructive feedback can be delivered in better way, you don't have to be a dick about it.
You guys don’t actually deserve any of this good information, shame on you
Was enjoying the observations but gross to hear you sipping every few minutes.
Take off your watch next time
Noise of sipping whatever is disgusting!
Really??
Sargent was the best
bet he didn't slurp while he was sketching
Love, love Sargent.....and how all in a brush stroke or line.
Thank you nice video. Well explained
You really are a chad
I need a coffee
I had to stop watching. The noises off were too distracting, if not downright unpleasant. Sorry.
Seemed Iike he had a sore throat. Seemed to be bothering him.
Kayess
Get a life dearie ❤❤❤
I actually started enjoying his slurping coffee noises
No need to slurp coffee during a video. Not good etiquette,
Really annoying herring you slurp coffee on your video!
Good vid.
Interesting, I agree about the super detailed drawings....clever but too perfect and loose the artist flare the artist may have.
😂😂😂Sorry Charlie but only the best will do. I’ve read the book. Enjoy your coffee.
Awesome info, i didnt care that you were drinking coffee or sneezing
For me it made it more real just like we were having a real chat
Thank you for taking the time an being generous in sharing important information ❤
After everything becomes AI created we’ll be adding these human characteristics back in 😂
It was unbearable. he needs to stop!
@paulwoodford1984 u can just... not watch it. If you guys comment, he will see that this video has good views and tons of comments. But if only a few of you comment, and the rest of you just leave the video, he will see "oh shit people dont like this, and the numbers speak for it" that is if he cares, idfk.
So he slurps, but does he owe you guys anything?
Gotta work on your proportion and value control, your shapes could be much more accurate or more designed and you’re really killing your drawings by over defining features . Look into how loomis draws faces tonally, he leaves out a lot of information. Try drawing bigger and see if that helps but keep up the work man.
His proportions and values look accurate to me.
Yes, it's important to know that much of Sargent's portrait drawings were actually done on large sheets of paper. Also, I'm not sure which kind of charcoal he employed because I find the kind I've been using doesn't quite have the same characteristics. Or it might be due to the paper used.
Why not loudly spit to add to your complete genre!! Bet yr not married.
For heaven's sake, people! Focus on what he has to say.
And stop drawing in the shadow - we can't see that drawing either.
Dont listen to the critics on the comments
Its a great video
Thnx king
...so, this is how the master achieved a likeness... well, I suggest writing a detailed script of the spoken material in the clip, editing it several times, and rehearsing, first without demo-ing on paper and finally, talking and sketching simultaneously...
Improvisation doesn't work here. Scores of artists, particularly in the US, tried to find an applicable answer to the question implied in the title. It seems to me that the subject goes beyond the powers of Mr. Jacobs...
I couldn't watch this video, I got nauseated in two minutes, sorry for telling you how I felt.
spinning the pencil - huge watch on your wrist - I had to stop watching
Who cares if he wears a watch and spins his pencil? No mention of the coffee slurping?
Lol
Omg 🫣😂 I did’t get that far, stopt watching because of the throat noises 😝
It’s such a shame! Why do that if you make á video?!
It’s a shame, you missed out
@@GarmanyRachel you are probably right but I can not listen to dirty noises 🫣
Quit slopping your coffee throughout the video, very irritating!
Quit slurping coffee during your video making! It was making me nauseous!
Yeh, few things sound more arrogant and pretentious than talking art and slurping from a mug.
I lasted 4 minutes
Great practical advice and I like your delivery. Ignore the negative comments and thanks for posting.
Shape and Value ..finito!!
I am just waiting him to say the word WOMEN after that slurp.
You've done nothing more than copy the shapes that Sargent already interpreted. Why don't you show how shape interpreting can produce a likeness using an actual model. Maybe then you'll offer more than your click-bait title..
Wow what a sensitive people, he is not farting on camera, it’s just a drinking sound… grow up.
Great info, everyone with the negative comments can f$&* off. Who where the references you mentioned for shape study?
lol, they were marco bucci and Sinix Design. All the best
You’re drinking coffee noise is very annoying fyi don’t have that in your videos please.
Gueez can't u make a video without the slurp, sniff, cough?
disgusting
Your otherwise good presentation is undercut by the throat clearing and the slurping. Especially the slurping!
From a voice-over artist, and a master instructor, drink water only before recording. Be aware of coughing and throat clearing. Do not do this at all. Edit it out if you cannot control it. The content seems to be sound, but you'll lose subs if you don't clean up and be ready before you record. It makes the viewer feel like you don't care if your product is not attractive and professional. And if you don't care, you lose all credibility, and thus a chance for increased viewership. Take this as an opportunity to improve. That's how it is intended.
Please have a cough drop or quit the coffee….
