"I'm bored, I wanna do a tightly scripted intrigue set in a movie studio for owls!"
Me: .... _Go on_
Unironically one of the funniest levels in the game...
Hatty time is just pure, unfiltered wholesomeness, strong enough to make Yathzee feel childlike wonder and joy! That's how good it is!
Besides the Mafia, the other Mafia, the violent movie standoff, very-close-but-not-quite the devil, the tragic romance and the biologically self contractory resident megalomaniac that actually manages to succeed for once, if only for a bit, all with a side of the cutesy main protagonist who probably has undeclared mental issues.

The Hat in Time protagonist is inconceivably adorable.
just in case anyone is wondering a hat in time started development before Yooka-Laylee did
Wesley ???? And?
just putting it here in case anyone got curious
Oh ok.
It helps blow off the "Hat in Time just rode in off yooka laylee's coattails and is just a ripoff" argument some people might make to know AHiT *technically* came first in conception, even if not in release date due to a smaller less experienced team. So good on you for putting it out there for the curious ones.
SpectralRoses That makes sense, although I knew about AHIT before YL.
Just started playing A Hat In Time and not even an hour in and I’m already smiling about it. Being someone who loves dark games like Hollow Knight and Typoman along with Twilight Princess and Bastion, I think A Hat In Time might be one of my favourite games. Gotta keep playing it though.

Gotta say, HoB has some of the best level design I've ever seen like how the map constantly interconnects and expands in new ways. I've had nothing but fun with it, outside of it's initial performance issues.
A Hat in Time is like Titanfall 2 great game released at a horrible time.
PineAppleProductions It's actually like the Shovel Knight for 3D platformers, the game YookaLaylee aspired to be. But releasing at nearly the same time as Super Mario Odyssey....
Thats what I'm saying released at a horrible time.
PineAppleProductions Kinda wanted it to succeed too.
Same
Hopefully, Yahtzee’s fairly positive review will give people incentive to check it out.
So A Hat In Time's a 3D platformer Yahtzee actually liked
So it's part of a genre he said can't possibly work actually working, it's amazing how something well built can actually make anything work well
Edit: Seeing as I have everybody's attention, no I'm not going to beg for subscribers like what usually happens, this is far more imortant. It was announced on *The Escapist* this past week that the website is in *SEVERE FINANCIAL STRAITS* (by a volunteer community manager no less) and every single member of payed staff has been layed off except for one, Yahtzee himself. People have joked for a while that Yahtzee is the only thing keeping the escapist alive, but now it's true and given how dire the situation is, even that's on shaky ground. The Escapist could die and shut down tomorrow it's so bad from what I'm lead to believe. So enjoy Zero Punctuation while it's here, who knows how much longer we'll have it or where it will go if the Escapist kicks it
This is just a PSA so people know
(If you want to check the post out it's in the Escapist forums titled "An open letter to the escspist community")
TGX Game Reviews When has he ever said 3d platformers can't work? I know he said first person parkour can't work.
And some people judged the entire 3D platformer genre using Yooka Laylee as the basis.
Yeah, because one somewhat flawed game sure as hell represents the entire genre.
nceQon.BraSS He's said in the past that platforming in 3 dimensional space is difficult because you can't judge depth(which I disagree with) I don't remember the specific video but he has said it, when I firgure it out I'll post a response but he's defiantly said that before
He did say that about 1st person platforming, "because you can't see yourself in relation to your enviroment", that was said in the Mirrors Edge 1 game.
You know that he liked Super Mario Galaxy, right?
I’m glad were have another 3D platformer. We have so many indie games that are 2D but not many in 3D.
Same, 3D platformers are my favourite game genre but for years it was like all companies, except Nintendo, forgot they were a thing that exists.
And the fucking bullet hell games, sooo many bullet hells. Please stop. We don't need more of them
We don't get a lot of 3D platformers because they're hard to design. Just ask Sonic Team. There was a very brief renaissance where developers were forced to make 3D platformers to sell consoles, and we got a few gems out of that trend. But in general, the natural state of a platformer is 2D.
because 3D is hard and more expensive than 2D pixel art
Obviously 3D is harder to make than 2D, don't need to be a programmer to know that. It's probably not even about difficulty, it just takes more time but they'd rather stick to simple 2D designs than make more unique 3D designs because it means they can push out more games at half-assed quality.
I dont buy that 3d platformers are harder to make than 2d when most game middleware is designed for 3d games. I think the issue is nobody is nostalgic for dense fog about 5 feet away to cover up clipping and popin. Nobody's especially nostalgic for how early 3d platformers looked, where pixel art is now seen as an art choice and not a system limitation for the era.

Chill about Doki Doki guys, it's entire presentation is built around making you judge it as upbeat cartoon pornography so that it can pull off the twist. It's perfectly reasonable to assume that it is what it looks like.
Don't pretend that you didn't originally play it because you thought the same thing.
I don't think it's really a twist. I mean, once 'Psychological horror' is a tag you've kind of spoiled the twist. Plus, I could direct you to flash games on Newgrounds that have done the same thing since the early 2000s.
Those tags are user-defined and weren't originally there. That's like saying Sixth Sense doesn't have a twist because everyone knows it already. And I never said it was a shining star of originality for doing so, so no clue what you're on about there. Kimi to Kanajo did it first and better.
To be fair, they put 'not for children or the easily dismembered' on the first screen of the game. You can't warn people 'fucked up shit is about to happen', then pretend you don't want them to know there is fucked up shit about to happen - either the warning was pointless and counterproductive, or that's not actually the twist.
In this case, I'd argue that the twist in Doki Doki is really more about what happens, not the fact that anything happens at all.
(And for the record, I actually did play it for the horror. And you have *no* idea how many 'psychological horror' games on Steam I've bought only to find out they... weren't)
Lewd Cynthia Actually the game's multiple warnings should be plenty indication that something horrible happens. Doki Doki isn't meant to be a "trap" where someone plays it, then unexpectedly it turns into horror. It's a horror game, and Team Salvato want you to treat it as such. Dan Salvato is simply fond of the visual novel format, and it does make for excellent contrast with the horror.
@@Aurichalcam
Except it isnt a horror game
Its impossible to consider it that unless your under the age of 10
"Upbeat cartoon pornography" He has to know, I mean, he's just barely cutting off the tag "psychological horror".
Jeffrey Medvick maybe he didn't see it, didn't consider it, or didn't believe it. Or maybe he does know what it is but just doesn't care.
Then again that tag is somewhat of a meme for bad games so he probably brushed it off
Okay, but IKEA Virtual Pancake Kitchen is also tagged as 'psychological horror' so
Jeffrey Medvick he personally dislikes visual novels and it is historically accurate to assume it might be pornography because well there is a lot of that in the medium however since this review he's actually reviewed the game. I didn't watch it because he's going for an in-depth analysis so he's no longer dismissing it but this was a dismissal a joke yes but still a dismissal in his piss take of visual novels
When he got around to reviewing it, he sounded like he didn't know that at the time.
I'm loving Hatty Time. Cuteness overload.

A Hat in Time far exceeded my expectations. Definitely one of my favorite games of this year
It's a shame that 10% of the comments are actually about the games in the video, and the other 90% are about what sounds to be another "Game that isn't what it seems" game and so everyones going crazy wanting to see Yahtzee be surprised.
Because it is a noteworthy experience.
Well you know what else is a noteworthy experience? The games the video was actually about.
Well its a two way street you can complain but you can't complain and let's be honest very little comment sections are on topic of the subject of a video let alone zero punctuation.
Wolfwood2057 yeah, it is actually a shame. As someone who has played the game in question I can say I understand why people want to spam Yahtzee comments to play it. But it is a shame that that couple seconds joke in the intro takes away focus from the rest of the video. It's not relevant and if anything it'll probably make him want to play it less. But that's the Internet community in a nutshell I suppose. Have to push on trends and personal agendas. And can't take jokes. At this point I think those are ground rules for anyone who use the Internet.
P. S
That said, if you haven't played it yourself I do recommend giving it a try. Even if you're not into the Dating sim formula (I'm not either, literally never played one before). The story the game is *actually* telling is incredibly interesting. And how it tells its story is equally interesting. That is as long as you can get past the beginning part. It plays like a normal dating sim for quite some time before things... change. But it effectively throws you off the loop. I mean. It's free. So little reason not to give it a chance at least.
weeaboos for as far as the eyes can see.
Hob was great, was always something interesting happening around the corner with its level altering puzzles.
Steam releases wave after wave of visual novels, Yahtzee just happens to make fun of the meta one and the smug weebs come out of the woodwork.

A Hat in Time is definitely rough around the edges, but it's just too adorable and funny
I figured Yahtzee would enjoy a hat in time because I played it shortly after finishing psychonaughts and I can’t help but feel that it’s also taken a smidge or two of inspiration from that too, if at least enough to ensure I was having enough fun where I actually wanted to 100% both because it didn’t feel like a chore 😁

Isn't it good news that it is not a generic romance visual novels with a choice of girls who all have equally generic roles (childhood friend, Tsundere, Yandere) and a supporting character who has no role other than helping you get with a girl.
I am confuse!
Yahtzee actually having fun?
When did I go to another dimension?
I´m so pissed at the idea of A Hat in Time. I mean, I just checked it out, ...... and it looks amazing.
But, why did it take Yatzee to make me find out about it. I knew about Yooka Laylee for years, but this game just pops up and seems a lot better.
I feel like it will be similar to the new Ratchet & Clank, which I feel was severely overlooked, so people will keep on going about how 3D platformers are dead, yet they won´t buy this or R&C.
Well, at least Cuphead was successful commercially and critically, so maybe indie developers will start making original cool material again, hopefully.
it´s a shame that indie developers don´t really get the support they need, so they often need to make a quick cashgrab of a game. I mean, just imagine how demotivating it must be to make a great game, and then see a clusterfck like No Man´s Sky get a lot more attention.
Thus indie developers start making huge concepts they can´t keep up with, and make horrible games.
Strip it down to the basics, come up with a cool concept, and make the gameplay fun. It´s not that hard.
Undertale, Shovel Knight, Owlboy, Cuphead, Bastion, Hotline Miami all got those things right, and they didn´t try to act like a AAA developer. They knew their limits and built on them.
Sadly there are many games that just go under other peoples, and unfortunately even my radar.
+SkyRip And the good indie games that do get attention have fan bases that turn people away from the game E.g. Undertale, Cuphead etc.
I completely agree. There are always a bunch of great games being pushed under the rug for triple A titles that seem to just ride off the popular of a particular title or indie games that seem to never have a complete and unique experience in mind outside of being inspired by something. I feel like people really have to dig to find some awesome games. Hell, right now I'm excited for some neat looking games like Fight Knight, Jimmy and The Pulsating Mass, Indie Pogo, Beardblade, and The Mummy Demastered that should be coming out next year. =Y
Hat in Time has been in development for 5 years now. It's Kickstarter goal was a very modest £30,000 and it greatly exceeded that expectation. It kept getting delayed because the devs really wanted to make the experience perfect, but I think a lot of people just kinda lost interest in the project. Currently it's one of the most positively reviewed Steam games of all time and with the great workshop support and additional FREE content in development, Hat in Time definitely hasn't finished it's song. All it's going to take is for a couple of bigger UA-camrs to do some in depth coverage of this game and it will take off.
It may even end up like Undertale, how the game was significantly overlooked on launch but after a big UA-camr covered it, it went viral.

Doki Doki LIturature Club. "Upbeat cartoon pornography". Yatzee, have you ever heard the phrase "never judge a steam game by its thumbnail?"
It's almost like he's not serious.
Also, the game wants players to think that. Ever heard of the "bait and switch"?
I’d love to see one of these ‘exploring ruined civilization’ kinda games where the civilization was recently destroyed and you’re looking for what did it so you can prevent some kind of apocalyptic chain reaction. I mean sure, the overgrown ruins thing is pretty and all, but why not take a pretty advanced city, take a mountain sized hammer to it all, and make that our world to explore?

The review makes it sound like the only challenging part of A Hat in Time is the bosses, but a lot of the platforming sections can be pretty difficult too. Also those lines that guide you to the goodies in some occasions are quite necessary, otherwise you would spend a lot of time combing through some rather complex scenery all over again.
Yea, Doki Doki Literature club. I DARE you to play that one. Seriously, I DARE you Yahtzee
oh man I bet he will now but only if you DOUBLE DOG dare him!!!
Man, you're challenge is so super cereal. I imagine there is some very super cereal stuff that'll happen if he doesn't make good on your challenge.
i can already hear his cynical british voice being unimpressed, he's a self-speculated video game masochist who has had to review every other game there is, including undertale and bloodborne, between just the two of those his bar would be set pretty high when it comes to it, especially since everyone on the bloody planets winking at him telling him to play it
WHAT EVEN IS DOKA DOGU LIBRETMURE LAB??? PURPLE IS NOT A NUMBER!
It's a horror-themed Ren'Py game, that tricks you into thinking it's "upbeat cartoon pornography" about lolis.
Finally decided to give A Hat in Time a chance and, yeah, it's a really charming little game.
Little rough around the edges but still pretty fun, despite its length.
Review Doki Doki Literature Club, Yahtz.
Yes, please.
He doesn't do books.
Doki doki is not oki doki
B1tPixel It's close enough to a game. Its a VN and i would count VNs as a type of game.
Red Pandai isn't it more of a dating sim then a visual novel. Or, I guess really it's a psychological horror with the structure and game play of a dating sim. But regardless, you know what I mean. I guess I wouldn't know though, since I have very little experience with both VN and DS. Only having played one VN (which I still have yet to finish) and 0 DS's
I want this game to have a bigger fandom!! It deserves more fanart!!!
Im seeing a lot of Doki Doki recommendations for Yahtzee, which is fair as it's good, but definitely not something for Yahtzee himself to play. Doesn't strike me as his cup of tea.
idk if it's a good game to do a full review on in general, as basically everything of note that happens in the game is in massive spoiler territory - his reasons for not properly reviewing Undertale come to mind.
I feel like he has already sat through it
Yeah I agree. You can't really *review* Doki Doki Literature Club. But what would be cool was if he streamed his first playthrough of it.
He has since reviewed it. Yahtzee thought the horror part was like a badly-written "evil video-game" creepypasta.

He'd probably realise that Sayori is just a cute, female version of himself and join her in death.
Once again, it's one of those games that are best experienced blind, so you can't tell people why they should play it besides that their preconceived notions are 100% incorrect.
I feel like it was trying too hard at some points, but that, kind of, makes sense with the reveal towards end (and hinted at throughout the whole game).
Analysis aside: Yuri was best girl, Natsuki was the most interesting, and Monika was the most dynamic (because of course she was).
Nothing is forgotten.
I so disagree with what was said about hob.
From the very start of the game the end goal was pretty clear if u were paying enough attention (get to the floating tower thing) sure it wasn't entirely clear why until the end but it is still there. The puzzles were fun, the platforming was fun the mechanics were cool and implemented well the combat was fun and sometimes hard. It also isn't done in an hour like most of these indie games nowadays which is really refreshing.
I don't really see why he found hob so boring, it seems like a game that does all the hings that he complains games don't do but oh well, opinions are a thing i guess.
It just makes me sad that this game doesn't seem to be getting any exposure right now and I feel like it really deserves it.
I found it far from boring. In fact, I found it extremely hard to put down to get back to work.
Marty Dmf glad I wasn't the only 1
Yeah. Something you two, and anyone who may come across this thread, should know is that the developers of Hob and Torchlight (Runic) got completely gutted last year, along with the Gigantic devs (Motiga), by the publisher Perfect World (because Hob isn't actually an independent game at all, as one would think). So we may see less of these lower tier, tightly designed games like Hob and The Sexy Brutale, as publishers like Perfect World move towards the "live services" business model, in the next few years. Tis a shame.
“Advanced” and “Rotherham” are not words that go together correctly 😂
I really enjoyed hob, probably my most enjoyable game this year
After several months of putting it off, I finally watched the review for DDLC, and one part in particular that I remembered quite well was his story on how his awareness of the game began. Here. This video. Amongst these comments.
I didn't know to what video he was referring to at the time. But The I watched this video, saw the reference, and immediately remembered the DDLC review. Of course, I had to scroll to the comments to see what he was talking about, and lo and behold was his analysis of the various reactions spot-on.
This series, Yahtzee, and this community are all just so great.
