I had the blessing of being involved with the first CreatorDLC (voice acting). I really appreciate your video, and enjoyed how in-depth you got with it. Vanessa's Curse was (and is) a blast to play! Online Party was always fun, but it never really felt like a stand-out feature. It needed something EXTRA to give it it's own identity. And Vanessa's Curse did a fantastic job of giving it that identity. I won't say it was all perfect. Online Party wasn't really conceptualized to be a lagless 1-to-1 experience. So now that Vanessa's Curse was attempting to do JUST THAT, it was really pushing Online Party's limits and showing it's weaknesses. Despite this, both the original devs and the Vanessa's Curse crew worked tirelessly over the following week to iron out a bunch of the glitches, adjust party size limits to correct connection issues, and tweak timers and mechanics to balance the game and make it fair for both teams. They stood by this product and made it shine as bright as possible! It's still by no means perfect. I really enjoyed this brief video essay, it felt well-thought-out and polished. My only advice is that the "Day 1 Experience" section went on too long without any sort of scripted voiceover, in my opinion. If you make another video like this in the future, perhaps consider putting scripted content over any similar clip reels, so that the video feels more cohesive. That being said, I really enjoyed the video, and I hope that you'll consider making more video essays in the future.
I kinda disagree. The unscripted segment kinda speaks for itself and ends up being really entertaining because of it. But yes I do agree it goes on for way too long.
Always appreciate the feedback! Honestly, the main reason the "Day 1 Experience" segment was so long was because I originally just wanted to do a standard gameplay video for Vanessa's Curse when it came out, but I put it off for so long that I felt inclined to make a more edited and scripted video like this. That segment was mostly a carry over from back then, but based on what you and others have been saying about its length I'll be sure to not overdo it in future projects like this. Glad you enjoyed the vid! (Also sorry for taking this long to respond, college finals are kicking my ass.)
yeah as a person who has made levels for a hat in time, I can tell you it's really, really easy to do. Hence, I probably couldn't tell you how they would categorize a mod as being "worth the creator DLC program." Also very good video!

I was stuck in the hospital for 3 days and got recommended this exact video. Watched it. Loved it. And for the next three days, went on a spree of your main and second channel. From TF2, a game I've never played, and the Wii Music video which kinda made me wanna pick up the guitar again. What I'm saying is, your content is awesome. Your Yearly Check-In #1 on your second channel gave some insight about how hard you work (in my opinion) staying motivated with uploading. I can't stop typing. But all your videos are really good and I hope you keep making videos. :)
Awesome video all around! It covers a lot of how I feel about CDLC and Vacu as a whole. I love playing Vacu with friends a lot, and have even made some stuff for it before (like a small Death Wish pack). It can be buggy, and latency can be hell depending on other OP player's connection, but it's still loads of fun, ESPECIALLY during all the events. They teased modders that we could maybe make our own Vacu maps at one point, but we never got direct access to all the tools needed to do so, so that'll probably never happen (especially since the online userbase is so limited). I feel the main reason a lot of people haven't shown that they're working on something CDLC-related is either that they're just keeping it under wraps until it's ready (Vacu, for example, was teased in a handful of very-obscured screenshots in the mod showcase channel on the AHIT Discord, and went silent for a good while until it was officially revealed), or some people just don't want to take the gambit that CDLC production naturally has. In order to make something for CDLC, you'd likely have to spend a GOOD amount of time developing the mod, either by yourself, or with a small team of other modders. Interest in developing a mod can drop fast, depending on whether or not there's incentives to keep going with it. I've ran into this many a-times myself with a lot of my mod projects. And when you can't truly confirm whether or not the effort will even be worth it until you present a decently-finished product to GfB (for all the final touches and assistance needed), hope to Snatcher that they approve, and you can get paid for all your time and labor spent, it cuts down a lot of people who'd be willing to participate. The idea as a whole is very neat, but it's very flawed for modders themselves who could potentially be interested in it. Modding as a whole is generally just a hobby. An addictive one at that, but something you probably would just translate into work elsewhere. The lead devs of Vacu are part of teams for other non-Hat games currently, so it seems CDLC would be something you would want to produce as a side interest, and not have be your main goal. As you said, though, what qualifies as a CDLC could truly vary, so maybe this statement would change if we ever get more. Great video overall; glad to finally see a compiled "retrospective" like this for the current state of CDLC.
Coming from the mod community, when this discussion appears in my own circles is that we really absolutely don't know what "fits" the CDLC standard, like you said, its very ambiguous so anything fits, the problem is we are concerned over the quality, there's a lot of modders who can achieve said quality in very high standards similar to an actual game, but then the next question comes, "do we really need to make this behind a price tag?" and ends up with just releasing the to workshop page instead. I've been in many projects that were discussed privately to be "CDLC worthy" but we were concerned over the same things I've mentioned in the last paragraph so it never really passes filling the form in the end and we just release the mod for free.
As a day 1 one enjoyer, I remember realizing that multiples games where taking place at the same time, creating bugs, that's why players where cursed at the start or where not able to be cursed or where able to go in locked zones...
It rather shocks me that it's been 2 whole years since Vanessa's Curse released... I won't lie, I speedran buying out the shops and haven't touched it since. The issue is that A Hat in Time is essentially a dead game when it comes to the devs directly working on it, but with a bursting community it's mod support is thriving. Nobody wants to see it die, but unless you're on PC it's full-on dead in the grave. Creator DLC is super cool, but it's a scary task for a simple fan to come up with brand new content for their beloved game... so nobody has really stepped up to the plate since. But to at least give some hope that somebody will is reassuring to have.
Good video, the day 1 segment felt a little long for a discussion type video though. Anyway, I've been wondering what was happening with AHIT's creator DLC for a while now, it's been so.. weird how they made it and then basically dropped it as soon as possible
i actually thought for the whole video that all of this was made by a bigger channel only to realize that- HOW DO YOU HAVE LESS THAN AT LEAST 1K SUBS MY FRIEND??? to be honest, this video is SO well made, but i do agree with one of the commenters about the "day 1 experience" section going for too long without a scripted voiceover i hope your channel will get bigger in the near future. your content is just... chef's kiss, is all i can say. good luck on your journey!!
What a nice little video UA-cam suggested to me randomly. And it's about one of my favorite games, too. Hey there. As I'm someone who is occasionally making level based mods for Hat using the official modding tools, I thought I wanted to share my thoughts on the Creator DLC and your video. Back when the program was announced, I immediately thought about trying to apply one of my mod ideas, something I just started working on at the time, but... since it was a mod that had a wastly different playstyle from A Hat in Time's usual 3D platforming, I wasn't sure if it was going to cut it. Maybe it would be "way out there" and "hard to get into" by casual players. This different gameplay style was also heavily reliant on, if not outright mimicking some parts of other games, mostly Nintendo games... and as we all know, we don't want to mess with Nintendo when it comes to copyright or monetization. Plus, as the mod kept growing, becoming more and more ambitious, I wanted it to "feel right", and considering where the inspiration came from, it couldn't have been complete without using copyrighted music or some other assets from those very games. Even thought I managed to write a whole story using only base Hat in Time characters and a few OCs, I still thought about including some actually existing copyrighted characters for bonus content, and... At one point I just decided "You know what? Maybe CDLC is not worth it if I want my mod to be as closely realized to my ideals as I wanted it to be. Let's just make a normal mod instead where I can get away with stuff, I don't really care about the money any more." So yeah, to this day, I'm not entirely sure what would or wouldn't be eligible for the CDLC program, and I think it's the same for most modders: they either think it would have to be something that stays relatively close to how the base game's gameplay works, and they think their mods are "too ambitious" to be "restricted" like so... or maybe they don't have the resources to make something look as "officially passable" as Vanessa's Curse, what with all the custom assets and whatnot. So while the idea of the program was good, I wonder if it will have any future at all, with how A Hat in Time itself is losing steam now so many years after release. Who knows, maybe if Hat 2 will eventually come out, with CDLC outright announced, people will be more willing to try again?
This covers basically everything I wanted to know about Vanessa’s Curse and the things I had questions about too! Thank You! A Hat In Time Is A Really Awesome And Unique Game That Has One Of The Best, If Not The Best Communities I’ve Ever Seen For Any Game. It’s Also Interesting To See How Many Hackers There Used To Be Back Then.
as someone who only played this game on the Switch i had no idea how big the modding scene was for the Steam version.. the footage shown in this video look quite exciting.. i should look into this some day!
Fun fact, CreatorDLCs can not have official translation support. So if someone wants to translate a CreatorDLC into other languages, they have to make a mod for it instead. Official DLC 1 (Seal the Deal) and 2 (Nyakuza Metro) have official translation support. But CreatorDLC can not get official translation support. I don't know why it's like this. But that's how it is. Official translators also never got DLCs for free or something, and I didn't want to buy Vanessa's Curse because I wasn't interested in MOBAs, so someone else thankfully contributed necessary text files that I was able to translate alongside other translators. That's right, I've translated Vanessa's Curse but I've never played it. xD
Oh god you're right, this IS a MOBA. I never really thought about that... That's really weird with the translations, but I'm glad people are still willing to get the translations out there. Even if I don't use them or anything, more accessibility for people is always awesome!
This was a great video, but like Undeemiss has noted, the "Day 1" part felt a bit too intrusive. Also the part about Creator DLC being "focused on building something that would otherwise be a struggle for a regular mod" felt a bit out of nowhere? At least that was not the impression I had when Creator DLC first rolled out - it always seemed more like Gears for Breakfast opening an avenue for their fans to participate in development of the game itself. Something bigger than just a mod, but not on a technical level, moreso on the "it's actually sold as a part of the game, instead of an addition the player may choose to change the game" level. Makes me wonder if the reason for the inactivity of the program is the fact that the creators who are truly passionate about creating the content for the game prefer the freedom of being a fan over the honor and profit of being a business partner. I hope more people see this video, maybe that's how we will finally get a second Creator DLC!
if you told me that snatcher was voiced by Geoni (you know the one "being a fish is an important step in a person's life" the Gabreal guy from ultrakill) i would rejoice cuz i think he'd be awesome at it voiceing'm
AHIT has zero servers btw AHIT is using a Steam API and the type of connection being used is called PEER TO PEER meaning someone is the host that everyone connects to for the online that's why it's exclusive to PC.
Nice video! I’ve come to appreciate smaller creators a lot more now, the content they make is often very good, it’s a shame that it doesn’t get as many views.
I love this video! Keep making more my guy! I agree with top comment, the day 1 section went on too long, maybe keep the gameplay going in the backround and then talk? Otherwise, incredible!
This was a cool video, will say showing that much of the day 1 experience was interesting albeit a bit too long, would've loved to see a comparison of the bugs between the launch day for the DLC and how it currently feels playing the game. I haven't really played much of the AHiT outside of when it first came out and the cruise DLC so finding this on my recommendations was interesting. I do wonder what the devs originally intended for the Creator DLC and whether or not they found the submissions (or maybe lack of submissions?) lackluster or wanting more. Lastly, the only shocking thing I found that you said in this video is the fact that you don't use Discord.
Looking forward to A Hat in Time 2!!! ( I Hope!) The flow of movement, colorful environments and cast of characters, and GREAT music is what sells thig game to me. I hope they make another game, or more official DLC!
One of the issues I see is that the modding tools might not allow a big enough experience. You can make something like Nyakuza Metro, but you can't make a new hub like your spaceship that leads to new levels or have proper story progression as you can't get time peices (though not sure about making a new collectable.) You can't make a DLC-like mod; it has to fit in a level.
I remember being really excited for this DLC but its buggy release really soured the experience for me. Still happy to support the mod creators tho and it seems like its a lot better now. (P.S. look there i am! at 6:46 !!! the guy with 0 points! wow!)
I loved A Hat In Time, and honestly I never played many mods for it, though I probably should have since the few I did were really good! I wish there were more Official DLC or Creator DLC, it would have been really awesome to see more stuff for the game. ... peck
they failed as a publisher so idk, this may be the end of times for it 😀 game wasn't really good anyway...cute yes, funny yes, hard no, long, no. control was mid , air dashing was garbage...a lot of roughness. and they just kept piling into it, instead of optimization. relying on fanbase for content is literally end of times

You said Hat Kart and now I can't stop thinking that has to be the next DLC, Hat in Time's mechanics translated into a kart racer somehow It would definitely be something that pushes the boundaries a lot, and should probably be its own game instead but you knoww Another thing I can't help but think of is something that actually makes use of the multiple characters feature, since there's all sorts of character mods out there but not really any official content based around switching characters.
@@Zeder966 Imagine if the kart was just an equippable badge and a lot of the characters' base abilities were still expressed. I think that would be neat-
As far as I know, the console ports are basically done in regards to new content, both official and community -wise. For community maps, you'll have to use the PC version.
I think Project A could be in the next Creator DLC. It's still in active development and it seems to have the high ambition and polish to be a complete new chapter for AHIT. just my guess
I would love to have smt like those cat women section in arkem city but for mustache girl like that cut subcon mission with her or the part during the end but for the whole game like a adds a new playable character adds new missions and adds more story and content for mustache girl who i feel like could have gotten so much more i dont know it would be like this as a creator dlc or smt from gears them selves but heck ill take both options
I actually asked a gfb employee if there would be any more normal hat dlc made by them. Sadly no comment, as it would be really annoying if they didnt make any more themselves
why is Vanessa’s curse not available on switch? I’ve always played this game for so long and I’m just noticing this. (I just figured out it's not official🥰)
It's a shame that Vanessa's curse isn't available in console versions, I feel like they should have tried to adapt the mode to a Singleplayer mode (or adapted online) for consoles because of the Ammount of cool cosmetics inaccessible to console players
So I could make a mod for hat in time where hat girl is replaced by sonic and bow girl is replaced by tails and hat girl and bow girl are now nova that join your team at stage 2
Is this game any good outside Switch? I tried it on switch, took 36 gigs, felt that only was worth it for the ''Cute'' factor, the story was boring, only snatcher had anything worthwhile, moustache was a non factor and then appeared out of nowhere, as a collectaton it has too few collectible hourglasses, the DLC ship was boring, the DLC yakuza was kinda interesting but ended in a ''battle'' that wasnt a battle, the platforming was repetitive and boring, I couldnt really care about the game because it felt like they just tried to fill the screen with cute stuff because the game couldnt carry itself on level design or platforming.
Honestly it depends on how interesting the mods and Online Party seems to you. There's legit a lot of good user created content for the game, enough to put me over 200 hours of playtime, but if you weren't already a fan of the game it's hard to say. If you see the game + DLC on sale for Steam and think the price is worth it to check the mods out for yourself, go for it. If not, don't feel bad about it.
it sounds like you just didn't like the game, so another version of it probably wouldn't change your mind. That said the switch version is definitely the worst-performing one of the bunch, and it's missing all the social and user-created stuff that makes the PC version stand out. It might be worth getting it on a steam sale, you can always refund it under a certain playtime if it doesn't suit you
Something tells me that the next creator DLC will end up being that Project A mod that was teased a few years ago.
I mean most mod creators wouldn’t be so confident in their mod that they would work on it for over 4 years so that’s probably true.
I hope

Anyway, I've been wondering what was happening with AHIT's creator DLC for a while now, it's been so.. weird how they made it and then basically dropped it as soon as possible
i actually thought for the whole video that all of this was made by a bigger channel only to realize that- HOW DO YOU HAVE LESS THAN AT LEAST 1K SUBS MY FRIEND???
to be honest, this video is SO well made, but i do agree with one of the commenters about the "day 1 experience" section going for too long without a scripted voiceover
i hope your channel will get bigger in the near future. your content is just... chef's kiss, is all i can say. good luck on your journey!!
I know, right? He has about as much subscribers as I do, and yet his content is amazing. Hopefully he gets millions of subs he rightfully deserves.
your videos have the feel of a bigger youtuber. keep it up lad! i feel that you are one spark from going up in flames (in a good way)
What a nice little video UA-cam suggested to me randomly.
Let's just make a normal mod instead where I can get away with stuff, I don't really care about the money any more."
So yeah, to this day, I'm not entirely sure what would or wouldn't be eligible for the CDLC program, and I think it's the same for most modders: they either think it would have to be something that stays relatively close to how the base game's gameplay works, and they think their mods are "too ambitious" to be "restricted" like so...
or maybe they don't have the resources to make something look as "officially passable" as Vanessa's Curse, what with all the custom assets and whatnot.
So while the idea of the program was good, I wonder if it will have any future at all, with how A Hat in Time itself is losing steam now so many years after release.
Who knows, maybe if Hat 2 will eventually come out, with CDLC outright announced, people will be more willing to try again?
I can’t wait for more of these creator dlcs!
this dude is so underrated, this is quality you'd expect from a channel that has atleast 50k subs, algorithm, boost this guys video

Great video mate, congrats!
13:37 Snatcher ascending to the gorillaz caught me off guard ngl
as someone who only played this game on the Switch i had no idea how big the modding scene was for the Steam version.. the footage shown in this video look quite exciting.. i should look into this some day!
Why didn't you ever mention the creator DLC theme being the homebrew channel music?
Hat in time is an amazing game made by amazing people and these people restored my faith in gaming.

Also stability of p2p are affected by every connected player so if someone have connection problem then everyone will have it
@@kuronya3582 Yeah that's true
@@kuronya3582 I don't claim to know everything these are just things I've heard from the devs, and that's how I know.
the "day 1 experience" part genuinely made me feel like i was watching a completely different video
Nice video! I’ve come to appreciate smaller creators a lot more now, the content they make is often very good, it’s a shame that it doesn’t get as many views.
Great editing! I loved the video!
Im giving this video a like. I havent finished it but the first words you said were my birthday so
Fellow November baby, rise up!! 😤
I wish there were a way to play Vanessa's Curse in singleplayer/local multi-player. I spent 20 minutes waiting for a match the other day :(
I'm still sad this is steam exclusive. I would have loved to play it on Switch.
I am so jealous of you steam boys
Looking forward to A Hat in Time 2!!! ( I Hope!)
The flow of movement, colorful environments and cast of characters, and GREAT music is what sells thig game to me. I hope they make another game, or more official DLC!
7:51 hey thats me (also some cheater game me those crown idk what happened)
I got Vanesa's curse like 2 weeks later and it was dead, then returned during the christmass event and it was full of people
One of the issues I see is that the modding tools might not allow a big enough experience.
(P.S. look there i am! at 6:46 !!! the guy with 0 points! wow!)

Where IS she, Nintendo?? The artist even xeeted about S3, yet no new collab...
really cool video!
Great video :>
underrated channel
I was so disappointed when it first came out, I was so ready for a new dlc and it was such a disappointment compared to how they hyped it up ;-;
I loved A Hat In Time, and honestly I never played many mods for it, though I probably should have since the few I did were really good!
I wish there were more Official DLC or Creator DLC, it would have been really awesome to see more stuff for the game.
...
peck
they failed as a publisher so idk, this may be the end of times for it 😀
game wasn't really good anyway...cute yes, funny yes, hard no, long, no. control was mid , air dashing was garbage...a lot of roughness.
and they just kept piling into it, instead of optimization.
relying on fanbase for content is literally end of times
@@GooFly-v3j"They failed as a publisher so idk" me when I'm delusional
@@robotmaster4515 you know they stopped making games and uh, just publish right?
Maybe look into stuff lol.
they haven't made a game since aHiT.
the next thing they did was published a cute casual platformer I forget the name of.
something to do with frogs.
anyways, that game sold pretty badly and as a publisher, that's a bad look especially when the last thing you did was make a triple platinum release 🤨
@@GooFly-v3j You have some good points. They're currently working on a new project but they need better QA. Sometimes when they updated AHIT the file size literally DOUBLED because they copy pasted the new version on top of the old version.
@@anon4305 literally never had a machine that could run the game well which was frustrating, as i coul play DMC5 on max and no issues xD
just clunky UNreal engine 3 really
Yeah, I retuned Vanessa's Curse on Launch Day after trying to get a proper game without bugs for 30 minutes
one day we will get cross play for this. one day.
Crypt of the Necrodancer players/fans at 17:20 💀
Necrodancer's great! Even if I'm bad at it. I just didn't want to go down the whole list. 😓
@@Zeder966 Sorry I thought you mistook Necrodancer by Undertale 😅
I didn't even knew Undertale was one of the games featured in the indie cosmicube to begin with...
Still wish they'd make a Hat in Time 2 :c
Oh, dude, I only bought the creator DLC because of Vanessa's curse, I didn't actually know there was more to it
You said Hat Kart and now I can't stop thinking that has to be the next DLC, Hat in Time's mechanics translated into a kart racer somehow
It would definitely be something that pushes the boundaries a lot, and should probably be its own game instead but you knoww
Another thing I can't help but think of is something that actually makes use of the multiple characters feature, since there's all sorts of character mods out there but not really any official content based around switching characters.
Oh man, now you've got me thinking about it. Imagine like a SRB2Kart type of gamemode but with Hat.
@@Zeder966 Imagine if the kart was just an equippable badge and a lot of the characters' base abilities were still expressed. I think that would be neat-
I play aHiT on switch… I’m so tired… all the cool extra content is gatekeeped from me… I want something new…
Any news if there going to add community made maps on the console ports?
As far as I know, the console ports are basically done in regards to new content, both official and community -wise. For community maps, you'll have to use the PC version.
I think Project A could be in the next Creator DLC. It's still in active development and it seems to have the high ambition and polish to be a complete new chapter for AHIT. just my guess
Yeah
'boutta be 3
I would love to have smt like those cat women section in arkem city but for mustache girl like that cut subcon mission with her or the part during the end but for the whole game like a adds a new playable character adds new missions and adds more story and content for mustache girl who i feel like could have gotten so much more i dont know it would be like this as a creator dlc or smt from gears them selves but heck ill take both options
i *BADLY* want to buy a computer so I can play modded and online a hat in time. The Nintendo switch doesn’t get enough love 😭
I doubt another creator DLC will come out. still hope it happens
I actually asked a gfb employee if there would be any more normal hat dlc made by them. Sadly no comment, as it would be really annoying if they didnt make any more themselves
I have console version and cant get that DLC😭
1:01 are we just not gonna talk about it?
I am just now learning Vanessa’s curse isn’t fully official. Fooled me.
It's completely official, just not made by GFB
Yeahhhh let's go fuck ya baby we did it
As a new player I wanted to play the dlc when it only came out because I think that whould be more fun, but... looks glitchy
THEY MADE ULTRAKILL IN THIS GAME
That Discord criticism is a weird one, who's using Discord to store or host stuff directly?
It's a chat app, not an S3 replacement...
Ill never forget how buggy day one was
god i wish this came to ps
why is Vanessa’s curse not available on switch? I’ve always played this game for so long and I’m just noticing this. (I just figured out it's not official🥰)
It's a shame that Vanessa's curse isn't available in console versions, I feel like they should have tried to adapt the mode to a Singleplayer mode (or adapted online) for consoles because of the Ammount of cool cosmetics inaccessible to console players
So I could make a mod for hat in time where hat girl is replaced by sonic and bow girl is replaced by tails and hat girl and bow girl are now nova that join your team at stage 2
I would get it for my pc but my pc sucks so unless i get a better pc i will stick to my switch
Same
150 SUBS? WHAT? NO WAY

Now I wish that I could mod my game on console :(

i knew there was a good reason we aint seen shit for literally years.
actually garbage
🤡
it sounds like you just didn't like the game, so another version of it probably wouldn't change your mind. That said the switch version is definitely the worst-performing one of the bunch, and it's missing all the social and user-created stuff that makes the PC version stand out. It might be worth getting it on a steam sale, you can always refund it under a certain playtime if it doesn't suit you
