    I know for myself, I was super into the arguments between denominations of Christianity, "Catholics BASED" "No, Orthodox BASED", "No, Protestants BASED"... but eventually it comes to a point where you drive yourself nuts. Just pick a church, find a young adult group and some friends there to go camping with or something. Imagine upwards of 60% of people thinking someone's choice is worth more then a potential life. And they always bring up extreme examples like in cases of r***, or if the mother's life is threatened. When these account for a very small percentage of abortions. It's life-denying ultimately.

The women? The greater collective/"your people" who dont multiply enough? I think to know ones own motivations for holding a position that affects the decisions of others is really important. I for myself do feel pity for the young women who willingly give up their child, that connection to another being and the opportunity to be mother. Out of curiosity, what are the core texts of paganism? Is there an unbroken line from the pre-Christian days to now? I ask, because it doesn't seem to me that there is. What I have seen from the neopagan movement is a desire to piece together a belief system from the scant material remains left from these ancient cultures, without much success.

      @monkeymoment6478 Рік тому +8

      @@Safe-and-effective
      I think you are looking at it the wrong way. There are no “texts”, pagans didn’t have texts, their beliefs came from a time when written records were impractical or non-existent, save for Ancient Greeks, Latins, and Indians. They didn’t have a concept of “religion”, the world view was in turn with nature and was synonymous with history. Neopaganism is reconstructionist and uses archaeology and cross referencing of what little written materials and accounts we have to piece together a comprehensive cosmology and mythos. There isn’t really a necessity for an “unbroken” line as the belief system has always changed and adapted to the needs of the people that followed it, it is a living belief system. A lot of pagan beliefs and practices survived in Catholicism and Orthodoxy, which can be “de-christianized”.

    • @travismitchell210
      @travismitchell210 Рік тому +3

      @Safe-and-effective that was the right question to ask. The answer is unfortunately not a yes or no answer. Neopagans and neopaganism have a very shaky foundation if they have one at all. Being that it is a "reconstructionalist" religion, alot of people just make things up entirely or get hung up on historical details with little emphasis on the living parts of a religion. That said, I do think it does exist. Firstly, our laws, our democracy, our western philosophy, and even Christianity have preserved the heart of paganism in a massive way. Most of the Greco-Roman ideals are still alive and well, Norse mythology is also well preserved, and to the east we have Hinduism, which, while not entirely "unbroken" had remained an indo european pagan religion for thousands of years. In short, it's not as easy as going to a church where you have everything laid out before you, but true paganism can still be a viable solution. Furthermore, I would argue that it is this original western culture that holds the components needed to actually help and change things within our society. But that's another long argument on its own.

    To say Eastern Orthodox Christianity is "a symbolic language"
    doesn't really encompass it
    All of life is a pattern ( as Pageau says - a fractal pattern ( he means a self-similar pattern
    ( mathematicians might quibble on this definition.. but, most people understand what he
    means when he says this ( like a tree and branches - self-similar ) ) ) ).
    Eastern Orthodox Christianity is kinda like a Rosetta Stone
    Participation in the Orthodox liturgy = learning the language of life
    Reading the Bible / Church Fathers = using Duolingo,
    Participating in the liturgy ~= Living in the country of the language
    Having an existential moment = experiencing the pattern first-hand

    That's why you don't find many atheists amongst 1st responders & soldiers. Because they are constantly dealing with the tragedy' of life and things that are outside of other people's control. I’m not religious at all, but I’m not going to advertise that fact if it doesn’t serve my purpose to do so. Religion is a useful psychological fulcrum to move the world of individual believers if you have the stones to move them. It’s a coping mechanism for death anxiety (Heaven) and for dealing with injustice by one’s betters (Hell) like any secular one (Utopian state vs climate change apocalypse, for example). Not to say that that’s bad, just that it’s not special or desirable in any sense except the Darwinian one, since religion survives and propagates into the next generation.

Christianity is unique, as it has two sides, namely the New Covenant, which focuses on the individual and controlling the animal-instincts, similar to Buddhism, but also the Old Covenant, which focuses on the community and controlling the external environment, similar to Paganism.

    They’re not. The western world is rapidly becoming atheistic.
    One example of someone turning to religion, i.e. Tate, is not indicative of the majority of people in general becoming religious.

      Right now the conditions for a change or a collapse are being configured under your nose - the mainstream western religions are being stripped down of the dross and being taken over by hard core types.
      What is going to happen to European welfare when the pension crisis hits in the next year. The states will fail - that is certain . The religions may well rise again - they have a good chance

    On the woman question in the west, I think it's a lot more natural then we think. In a way, woman have always had privileges that men have not, all throughout history. Its much more simple. Tradition and religion are a new counter culture. In the age of inclusivity, equality, acceptance etc, its not interesting to younger population to comply with what is officially accepted. Who are the new "cool" kids now? So called sigmas, chad, trads. Young people are drawn to things that are not as welcome, that are seen as odd and weird. Few decades back you were basic if you lived normal and traditional life, now you are cool if you do it because you fight the mainstream culture of the modern day. Of course not everyone is like that, but on average you can see such waves of behavior. I agree with you on most points, but people dont think that deeply about things.

    "W-Well, I *act* like I believe God exists."
    essentially, people are tired of just being confused, and at the same time they have become more cynical about political narratives, so they're retreating to 'just do what [insert religious tradition here] says' as a safe alternative. they'll take any source of moral certainty they can get, even while they know that they're just pretending to believe in it.

    You've made a strong argument for religion serving the purpose of "life" and fundamentally I think you are correct. I would argue that a religion has to also provide truth. The lack of truth is why religion waned in the first place, it's why people get stuck in their heads, and as a Perrenialist, I am a firm believer that this actual "truth" does indeed exist. You will find it within the vast majority of religions and philosophies, you'll find it in tales of heroes, and in the Conversations you have with better men. There is unfortunately, despite all of this truth, a ton of lies and faulty pretenses within every religion as well. For example, if one finds his peace by becoming his "true self" he cannot deny his earthly existence. That's a whole other topic, but I'm staunchly opposed to the idea that I'm not of this earth, that this earth is evil or an illusion, and that I don't belong here. Too many religions preach this kind of doctrine and it holds men back from reaching their true potential, yet they all claim to be concerned with becoming your "true self." Pacifistic doctrines completely embody this mismatch, which is why I think pagan gods provide the best example of what I should strive to become.

    Uberboyo, have you looked into Integral Theory (Spirituality, Psychology..etc) via Ken Wilber? It would be fascinating to hear your experience exploring this framework which lays out an evolution of worldviews….premodern, modern, postmodern….and beyond those….higher integrations. It lays out and honors the strengths of each rung on this developmental ladder while observing its limitations, risks…etc. Going forward to a new level can mean taking a deeper look at prior stages in order to honor and integrate them.

And markets are telling us that religion is pretty worthless, considering the poor earnings prospects for people who graduate from college with degrees in theology, religious studies, biblical languages and other wastes of time. Religions don't have to be factually true to be beneficial for you and your community. Even if God isn't real, belief is certainly real.
    We need something to handle the non quantifiable parts of life, the matters of morality, the passageways between life and death and the universal symbols of humanity. In physics, we learn what is and in metaphysics we learn what ought to be.
    Even if you just accept Spinoza's God, there is room for spiritual and mystical experience that is separate from what is logical and material.
