Portland to Vancouver Recumbent Ride

- The Pacific Northwest Recumbent Cycling Group has a very active membership. There are rides posted almost every week on their Facebook Group page. Usually there are 10 or more riders attending and anyone is invited. On this ride, there were 14 riders. Some people, like me and Patty, rode to the start from Portland. The ride was 21.6 miles. Those of us riding from Portland rode about 50 miles. The day started very cold and clear. I met Patty at the Hawthorne Bridge and we rode north the skies clouded up. We had cloudy skies for the entire ride in Washington. This was a ride I haven't done in many years and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is always fun riding with this group.
On our ride back to Portland the skies cleared and temps got up to the low 70's. Fantastic ride!

I could get two magnet mics with dead cats on them and steel ear studs. I could trim them up a little and people wouldn't know I was recording sound. They probably wouldn't have a very good opinion about my personal hygiene though.

this is a very complicated route.. I would really enjoy seeing all the turns from taking Sandy up and getting onto the 205 bridge.. I tried it one time but couldn't figure out all the twist and turns at the end of Sandy.. So i had to turn around and come back.. Thanks Robb
This route didn't take the 205 bridge, we went over the I5 bridge. If you go to the website Ride With GPS you can find lots of cue sheets for riding to Vancouver from Portland. Take care!
@@TravelsByTrike Yes.. i know you are on the I-5 bridge.. it is too narrow for me and my trailer. I would like to see the route that takes Sandy up and connects to the 205 bridge where cyclist ride in between n/s 205 into washington.. I want to travel to eastern washington.. And i got lost with all the twist and turns connecting the end of Sanday getting onto the bridge.. :) would love to see and hear you call out each of the turns to get on 205 bridge north bound... :) love your rides..
I think it was called the multiuse path.. but it was not clearly marked for cyclist.
Nice ride! I hope someday to ship my Solatrike to Vancouver. Maybe you can do this ride again, that we could meet then.

@@dtbch haha, yes, this is a common mistake. The BC, Canada Vancouver is well worth visiting.
Ok all caught up. You didn't really mention that you were motorized so I guess that is just the way it is with the assist. I think I saw nothing but ebikes in the trike group. I am still waiting for my adapter kit from Utah Trikes that will adapt to the through axle on the Dumont. I already have a Bionix wheel to swap out the 10 speed Catrike stock wheel.
... hmmm all I need is a truck and a trailer. :o)
Yes, I would say 80% of recumbent riders I've seen locally, at Tater TOT and the Recumbent Retreat all have e-assist. I think e-assist is the biggest thing to ever happen to the cycling industry.

@@Iamkayaky yes, our local biking group used to be called Oregon Human Power Vehicle and we had to change the name. Now it's Pacific Northwest Recumbent Cycling.
Very interesting ride Sylvia. I'm impressed with how Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington have bicycle pathways throughout. Our bicycle pathways along roadways in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania are virtually non-existent. We do have a beautiful river trail along the Susquehanna River, but our streets and roadways are very dangerous for riding *sniff* 😥. Thanks for sharing. Keep on Triking!
yes, the cycling infrastructure, especially in Portland, is very good and always getting better. Other cities could use it as a model.

Thank you, Cathy! You can only get this visor at Tater TOT in June. Leslie makes them and gives them away. She even installs them on your helmet.

There are a few cameras. I mostly use a GoPro Hero9 and an Insta360 One X2. I also have a Sony ZV1 P&S, iphone 11 pro max and Skydio 2 drone. I think I have an illness with all these cameras but I love it. Many thanks!

OK, You seem pretty busy travelin' on, so who is doing all of the drone shots?
haha, yes, I'm using an Insta360 One X2 on a 10 ft selfie (invisible) stick as well as a Skydio 2 drone with a GPS beacon that doesn't need a screen - it's brilliant.
@@TravelsByTrike So you can program it to follow you? It seemed it was doing a lot more than just that! 🙂
@@k3wfnUTUBE yes, you don't have to program anything. The beacon has simple controls and all you have to do is push a button. Super easy!
Nice job - as always. I lost my bearings a bit at the beginning -- looked like you started across Hawthorne Bridge and then turned around but I couldn't tell where you went - you mentioned the Springwater but I didn't think it went that far north. Oh well...lovely video. I want to check out the Frenchman Bar area. Thanks!
Yes, you are right, sometimes I mistakenly call the esplanade path the Springwater. Thanks for watching!

Another pleasant, peaceful ride, this time through two cities. I'm always amazed at how wide the Columbia River is. We hear about big rivers in the eastern US, but the Columbia truly is a great river.
I too have had problems with my GoPro batteries seeming to have a full charge, then pfft--nothing. One camera seems to be bad, while the other (I have two) is okay.
I just bought a used Insta360 One X from another UA-camr. I'm still figuring out how to use the Insta editing program to put out my next episode. I have to edit the 360 footage first, then combine it and GoPro footage on DaVinci Resolve.
Man that bridge is narrow! If only cities were more proactive when it comes updating infrastructure such as bridges. I'll bet jurisdiction between the two states and municipalities plays a role in why it hasn't been replaced yet. Seen that excuse trotted out here in the Denver area. Let's hope they don't wait until it's falling apart before they take action.

Thanks! Take your time with the Insta360. It won't take too much to understand how it works. What's fun it looking at footage and seeing how you can change the point to view from front to back or up to down with super interesting and smooth transitions. It makes the editing process fun even if it is very time consuming. Best of luck!
I think that bridge dates from the early 1960's and am surprised that it has any pedestrian access at all. Pleasantly surprised. I think the two states are close to the end of wrangling over the new bridge and hopefully it will have wider bike and pedestrian access
@@TravelsByTrike Yes, I have done some of that. I didn't save it as it was practice work. It's all done with key frames. I have done a bit of that with Resolve, but not to the degree that's on the Insta program. No problem; I'll get it and start creating before long.
