I’m trying out this self imposed hard mode I saw on the railroader discord where you take out all your loans when you start, buy the track to Sylva and the Dillsboro yard, and then delete all your money and your rolling stock except for the mogul, the coal hopper, and the caboose. Then you hire a few shop workers at both shops, and you only run trains with ai engineers because you have to pay them. I think it’s a fun challenge, and it gives me a reason to stay in first person and use the caboose like a real conductor.

I do use the caboose, have 6 of'em, I use'em on every train. They add a bit of complexity, but I do it because I wanna get a feel for how things would have been done circa 1950's.

I need to try bringing one along. I wish you got some kind of benefit from having one. At least switches returning to normal behind the caboose like you have a rear end crew lining them back for you.

I use one caboose on my Bryson-Whittier local. My minerals train and road freight use a wooden passenger car as a caboose. That way after i do my pickup at Alarka Jct, i can check the box on the car and get the notification when it gets to bryson and whittier. That way i dont have to babysit it as much and wonder where it's at, while i work other jobs. Once it gets to where i need it, i just tell the AI to stop and let it hang out until i need to move it.
