    Nice review. I have the Kiribi Kabuto with the same chrome finish as yours. Genius idea about storing extra flints in the bottom!

    I had a Corona Old Boy back in the 90s, and I found it was pretty flimsy (and expensive) and though I tend to be OCD myself it broke down after just a few months, both the snuffer arm AND the flint holder mountings failed. This Peterson lighter, on the other hand, has the same basic design but I find it _much_ more robust. I got mine in the same finish you did from the Pipe Rack in the UK...and after a few months it's as good and reliable as the day it arrived. I happily second your opinion of this excellent lighter. I especially appreciate their smart decision to get rid of the tamper that takes up too much room (and which I never used; that's why we have _pipe tools!_ That big brass tank is just marvelous. No question that I would recommend this over the Corona Old Boy. Sure, it IS a bit beefier, but proportionately so, and I have a hunch this lighter will last as long as I use it because of that sturdy construction.
    BTW, I don't know how much of a difference it'll make, but I'm using Vector Signature 14X cold filtered butane. A six can pack on eBay was as cheap per can as the cheapest Ronson or Zippo butane fuels, and I now pretty much have a lifetime supply. I will say I'm definitely not getting all that black sooty residue on mine, just a very light tan residue that wipes off easily when I notice it. There might just be something to the notion that these multiple filtered butanes are well worth using.
    For backup and for out-and-about, I do have a few of the Jobon dual flame lighters. For under $13, you usually get a reliable soft flame/torch capability. I haven't had one break in years, but they're so inexpensive I don't care much. I'm covered. The Peterson lighter, though, is just pure class...yup, I prefer its panache.

    Reposted: I recently ordered the exact same lighter from GQ Tobaccos as I FINALLY had tired of using matches. Very fair price with excellent service. It was delivered from the UK to TX by Royal Mail/USPS in less than a week... amazing. Thanx for the review.
    BTW, GQ was sold and reorganized earlier this year. Still trying to rub that spot off the screen.

    Hi Bradley, I appreciate all of your reviews. Also like your quality audio and lighting technique. Based on your Peterson pipe lighter review I have one on the way for 65 euros. I tried ordering from several tobacco shops and was informed they could not export this lighter out of the U.K. Again, thanks for your contribution of pipe and extensive tobacco knowledge. Fantastic review, I’m in the UK and have just taken up pipe smoking after a forty year gap , and i already had a Zippo, for which I’ve just bought a pipe insert.....but after watching your review I’ve ordered this lighter from GQ ....at £56 it’s by far the cheapest price,, other sites over here sell this chrome one for £80 plus. I’ve also subscribed.... thanks again 🤙🤙🤙

    Good review. Thanks for encouraging me to pull the trigger on this. A local pipe shop (nowadays they''re more "gift shops") guy has been anxious to sell me a Corona Old Boy, but it's so, so much more expensive, and I don't see any significant differences with the Peterson, either in form or function. So, I now have one in this finish on order from the UK. for even slightly less than what you paid. :-)

    I viewed this video and your review of the Brog model. I wound up with an Old Boy - the one with the pipe shape chart - because a friend gave it to me as a gift. Frankly these lighters are heavy to carry, and I worry about losing mine, so it never leaves the house. For me, the ideal lighter is the Linse, with the stupid labels peeled off. As always, I value your opinion.

  • @gunner525

    I've had a Peterson Old Boy for about two years now I think. I got the grey marbled one with just the Peterson P logo on it. I've enjoyed it a lot. My only gripe would be the charring or soot whatever you want to call it that occurs on the piece that holds the flint. It definitely has a bigger tank than the IM Corona and does hold up a bit better in the wind as well. I'd definitely recommend the Peterson Old Boy.

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube

    Bradley, I ordered mine last week, and I just got mine today. It was the same pinstripe design as yours.
    I think you would be interested to know that they no longer have the flames on the box. Apparently, they heard you guys saying that the box design could've been better. Now it is a solid green box and it still has the magnetic flap. I think the box is fitting seeing that it is for an Irish company, though, made in Japan. Let me know if you want to see pics, or whatever.

    Hi Bradley...great review and greetings from Dublin. I started piping a few months ago and got this lighter in the Peterson shop in the city center. Yesterday I went into Bray town to visit a small hardware shop to get some Zippo flints. They had none or even Zippo lighters that they normally sell. He said they cannot get them now and mentioned some trouble with Peterson. so I travelled to the next town Dunlaoghaire to The Pen Shop that has a great display of Zippos and Peterson pipes. ...The Zippos were gone and the pipes were stuck up on a shelf in their boxes covered in dust. He also said there was some trouble with Peterson and the flints " cant be got " I eventually got them in a newsagent. I did,nt want to go all the way into Dublin to the Peterson shop.
    Im hoping that Peterson are not in trouble or going to close down. I went to school in Sallynoggin right beside the pipe factory and we even got a school tour there in 1979 ( imagine that today ! )
    I mighg visit the Peterson shop this Saturday and see if I can get any more information.

    Hey, Bradley. After years of watching your videos, including this one, I've decided to treat myself and order this lighter from GQ Tobaccos. Hopefully it doesn't get taxed to hell by our lovely customs here in Brazil, haha. Thanks for the videos.

  • @siredith8846
    @siredith8846 3 роки тому

    Thanks for the recommend Brad. The fact it’s Made in Japan was a deal-maker for me. GQ Tobaccos IS cheaper than in Australia or the USA. Even with shipping. No tax payable too which is cool. Loved the pin stripe design so I chose that over the black and marble. There was one that was light green with drawings of pipes on it which I didn’t care for, and it cost a little more. Pity it isn’t windproof because I smoke outside. But, I prefer a gentler flame over my current torch lighter. And Zippos and Bics burn your fingers.

    ~My Old Boy arrived today and must say she's a beaut in her all mat black color.
    ~From the looks of your Peterson Lighter, I believe they are made by Kiribi in Japan. Therefore I think the Old Boy and the Kiribi is a fair comparison. Here's what I found....
    ~The Kiribi and the Old Boy are essentially the same height. Visually, the Old Boy is obviously thinner in thickness and less so in width. This is confirmed when measured with calipers. While smaller, the Old Boy however feels a tad heavier. I didn't weigh the two lighters because I couldn't find my scales, but the heft can be felt in the hand.
    ~I believe I the two lighters are made from different metals, I think steel and brass. However, I don't remember which one is which metal. I think the Old Boy is made of Brass.
    ~IMO, both lighters are superb instruments for lighting tobacco in a pipe bowel. Both are quick and easy to light and both have a great feel in the hand. I find the Kiribi is a bit easier to grip and to light because of it's tad larger size. I can feel the size difference when using the lighter.
    ~I give the edge to Kiribi & Peterson Lighters because of size, ease of adding fuel and subsequent more butane storage.

    First lighter was a Kiribi Kabuto in Silver Satin. It was very nice but only lasted about two years. I just purchased the identical one that you have only I'm in the states and it was $108.00 with free shipping. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy this lighter very much with my Savinelli pipes.
    The Old Boy Coronas were about $134.00 for the similar design and I've read that there have been issues with the Old Boys so I choose the Peterson.
    Great review by the way.

    Addendum to my earlier comments: my Peterson arrived today with my regular GQ order and is every bit as delightful as you claim. I was expecting it to come in the 'flame' box but my box is plain dark green...? I wonder if this is old stock or the new classic design - the flames were too kitsch for my taste anyway.
    As I sit here fondling it - and it feels so good in the hand it is impossible not to - the tobacco even seems to taste better... of course that is not possible... must just be the joy of using it.

    hello, i like your reviews, you describe stuff and things in a very spontaneous and relaxed way, which tends to be the opposite of what most reviewers do. after seeing this video and comparing a bunch of lighters, I finally purchased a peterson but now I'm wondering: what are the best flints to use in these lighters? and what is the best butane? could you give me any advice? thank you.

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube
      @stuffandthingsyoutube  8 років тому

      I use Zippo flint, and they work just fine. As for butane, the brand isn't that important. Just make sure it's 5x refined.

  • @zthetha
    @zthetha 5 років тому

    I have a bunch of low to medium priced lighters which are less than reliable - some useless - but which together far outprice a Peterson. I like a match but since Swan upgraded their product I also find them unreliable either failing to spark or having bits fly backwards. My petrol Zippos are completely reliable but taint the tobacco.
    Your review of this Peterson is very persuasive and even if it only lasts 2 years it is good value. My guess is that the filler valve will fail eventually and I doubt is replaceable...? So I shall get one and see how long it lasts. Your reviews are top notch.

  • @spajdude

    Is it true that the lighter leaks gas when you open the cap? I'm looking for a new pipe lighter, and I'm tired of those piezoelectric ones that stops working after a while. So I'm looking for a good flint lighter. I'm not sure that I want one with a cap, because maybe I would find it annoying having to open a cap everytime before using it, and if it leaks gas that's just a waste.

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube
      @stuffandthingsyoutube  9 років тому +3

      spajdude - Opening the cap is what turns on the gas so the lighter can be lit. It's not "leaking" gas, that's just the way it operates. You open the cap, light the lighter, and then close the cap to put it out.

    Wow. You've only had it for less than three weeks and the flint was already almost gone? That seems quick to me, but then again, I'm still a newbie, and your mention of how long the Xirkar and Zippo lighters last before having to refill them also seem *fast*. It is what it is, though, I guess. I bought a Colibri Connaught II quartz ignition lighter for about the same price, but found out after purchasing it that piezo-electric lighters don't necessarily last very long, but so far, so good.

    Nice looking lighter and thanks for demonstrating it to us , but to me the modern piezo lighters are the thing and it’s only my humble opinion but that’s not a well designed pipe lighter, excellent for cigarettes but I much prefer the right angled flame , but each to his own and I know some old fashioned things have a definite appeal even to me such as the Zippo pipe lighter , I suppose I’m old fashioned being 84 , but no the modern piezo pipe lighter for me .

    Have this lighter. Loved it's ease of use, however, I went through 2 in 9 months because the stopper break off after awhile. There is nothing inside the lighter keeping the stopper on except a weak meal connection. It's poorly designed, which I find surprising considering its cost. I would not recommend.

    I didn't notice that this video was 5 years old until minutes after I posted my previous comment here. I'm now wondering if the gentleman who made this video could post some information on how the Peterson lighter is holding up now that he's had it for five years. I was ready to get one based on the review, but seeing that the Peterson, the I.M. Corona, and the Kirbiri lighters get mixed reviews in the comments section below, I'm thinking that maybe the Old Boy design is inherently temperamental and prone to breakage because of the slender arms that hold the stopper and the flint being exposed. One commenter even said something about the rubber seals giving out after a year and allowing butane to leak. To be sure, Corona makes some flint lighters with an angled nozzle for lighting pipes that follow the Dupont pattern of having a lid that closes and a roller on the side so you don't have to put your thumb directly on the flint wheel or uncomfortably close to the flame, and I'm wondering if perhaps those are less problematic?

    So... What is the best? The Peterson or the IM Corona Old Boy?

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube
      @stuffandthingsyoutube  9 років тому

      Kasper - I guess it depends on what you want. The Peterson has a higher butane capacity, and the Corona Old Boy includes pipe tools in the body of the lighter.

      Not at all. It may be a little awkward though because the flame is angled out sideways.

    It looks great!I'm seriously considering to buy it. Before purchasing it, I want to know,
    1) what kind of material that the tank is made of, plastic, teflon, brass?
    2)Open and closing lid functions, are they smooth?
    3)Does the nozle rotate?
    4)It's been more than a year, how it is doing? Any notice since?
    5)Did you find any better one?
    I have more than 20 pipe lighters, the best one I think is pipe magie by im corona.
    I have a fake chinese old boy by jifeng. I don't like it. teflon tank, unsmooth lid function, the nozle rotates 360degrees.

      +PM Off - I believe the tank is brass, the lid does close smoothly, It's still working well, and I haven't purchased any other lighters since.

    The actual Kirbiri-branded lighters are great too, but I don't think they offer this awesome silver pinstripe finish that they put on the ones that Kirbiri makes for Peterson. Some of the Kirbiris have the tamper and even a bowl scraper blade. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can get the ones Kirbiri sells under their own brand name for $75. The least expensive Kirbiri I've seen is $90. I must admit I started shopping for them only yesterday, however. I agree, Colibri couldn't be any better. Kirbiri has done away with that metal thing that breaks on the Coronas. I doubt Dunhill is any better, either, although they invented the Old Boy lighter in the 1930s, or maybe it was the 1920s, and are Swiss-made, and cost MANY hundreds more.

    • @Doctoberfest
      @Doctoberfest 5 років тому

      They are similar simply for the fact that Japan has a manufacturer with the tooling required for these lighters. So when Peterson or Kiribi or IM or say another company wants this style they only have maybe a handful of manufacturers to pick from.

  • @T.R.A.N.C.E

    Peterson lighters are made by Tsubota, who also make lighters for Kiribi (owned by smoking pipes). They all use identical bodies, with only minor differences like the caps. I really dislike this, makes your lighter feel generic when 3 other "brands" are built exactly the same due to same OEM...

      Its amusing that you'd post the above on a video in which I praise the Peterson lighter. My review states pretty clearly how much I like it, so I'm not sure whom you're trying to convince. BOTH lighters are made in Japan and are of high quality. Also, I state pretty clearly in the review that it's an "old boy style lighter." Many manufacturers have copied that style. If you like the Old Boy better, enjoy. I certainly won't try to convince you otherwise, but to say the Peterson is junk is completely ridiculous.

    • @TablaWalaKC

      And IM Corona is a replica of a Dunhill Unique style lighter which Dunhill has been making for a century now. Please explain how IMC is better than Peterson.
      Also, FYI there are tons of chinese made knock offs made by Yibao on Eb.ay.
      I've been using a $12 one for a few months and it works just as well as a $600 Dunhill I have.
      Cheers.

      I got a Corona Old Boy - after three months use, the flint tube was out of alignment, the cap spring didn't work properly causing it to need refilling in less than 24 hours (leaked), and the fill valve also leaked resulting in spray back every time I filled it. I sent it in under warranty (they jacked the repair price up to $38), it took 3 months before I got it back, and within one month, the spring wore out again and it leaked. A fill now lasts about 4 hours and it's gone into the junk box. Very different experience than you had with it - I wouldn't buy another Corona.
