I’ve had a Corona Old Boy for a year and I really like it. It lights well and is good and solid in the hand. It certainly improves my smoking experience! I usually smoke inside the house: I’m a widower (sadly) - but it does mean that there is no-one to complain about where and when l smoke. 😉
Zippo all the way. I appreciate a small whiff of gas before I begin a nice smoke. It’s the American way. Thanks for the video.
After listening to your thoughts I think I will stay with my Zippo. Thanks
Hey Wilson! Thanks for following up with a video. It's definitely helpful to hear your thoughts.
I've had good success with the Yusud trench lighter. Very consistent lights. Works well outside in a slight breeze too. Has an adjustable soft flame wheel on the bottom that can be turned without the use of a tool or screwdriver. Sort of dressed up in gold with a rosewood shell. Price is right... currently about $15 on Amazon. I also picked up a butane purge tool. Gets the air out before refilling.
Wonderful long term review, Wilson. Thanks! I use my Old Boy for false lights and first lights. I like its precision and small flame. But after the first light, I use a Zippo with the pipe insert. And if I ever smoke outside, I use the Zippo the whole time. The Zippo evenly heats the whole top of the tobacco bed with a single puff, even in my deepest bowls. As much as I love my Old Boy, it's just not as useful as the pipe Zippo.
I have exactly the same, about 3 months. It has already been on the floor several times and it doesn't like that - I've had the giant flame issue, once, which fixed itself and I've had the overnight leak problem, once. Also, the little grub screw for the cap lever nearly came out after I dropped it - needed a jewelers screwdriver to sort that out. It's a bit dinged up, bent, the top plate is a bit loose... it still works! And I really like it for the soft flame, best.
Good Afternoon Pastor 😊 Im a Matches Guy 😂 Use a Bic Lighter while im driving 👍🏼 Thanks for the review on this product 👏🏼 Have a wonderful Memorial weekend ❤ God Bless You and Your Family 🙏🏽 Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
I have an old boy corona that I bought second hand which is a great option to bring the price down. I have heard the Peterson has a bigger gas tank than the Corona as it doesn’t have the pipe tamper. The corona build quality is amazing had no issues. It does need a regular clean as you say. Zippos still look good even when a bit toasty.
Solid review. Thanks
Thanks for the review I put a deposit down on one after my colibri broke and am picking it up later this week
To be honest had old boy for three years just lost it at work. I am still looking for it but it was best lighter although the fuel was normal butane. I used zippo flints. The only issue i had was the flame tip was stuck when it arrived due to shipping it overseas solved it by inserting a pin at the flame tip hole while it was filled with butane and it worked! Will keep looking around if I didn’t find will be purchasing another one. The feel and the way i can easily light the pipe is far better than any other lighter. The only wish is they release one without a tamper for bigger fuel capacity.
Appreciate the detail in your video - and there are pros and cons - however with the title being “5 Years” that kind of gives away the overall summary especially for a lighter 😀 if it’s still in the rotation after 5 years I’ll call that a win!
I had to send mine in for repair for the same issues that you did, but after 7 months, it’s happened again and it’s outside warranty now. But I loved it when it worked. And getting almost 3 years out of it was worth it to me. I’m going to get a Corona Old Boy next.
Good old zippo. I’m glad I made the investment and skipped out on the expensive ones. If I receive one as a gift, so be it, but I don’t think I’ll go and buy one.
Just got this for 70$, finally a nice pipe lighter instead of cheap BICs that start to burn your hand
great price
I have found on my Peterson lighter does like to leak, I tend to make sure the cap is super clean, every time I clean clean my pipe for the day I run a bit of everclear over the cap and it has helped a lot. The other issue I had was it is a leather wrapped Irish Harp and the leather peeled, sent it in and they fixed it.
I've had my Peterson lighter for about 6 months now. No problems so far.
Thanks for the review! I’ll stick with my Zippo lighter.
I’m a big fan of the Bic candle lighters. They’re cheap, reliable, and readily available. The extra length is really nice for a pipe. I plan on getting a Corona at some point, but the funds are better spent elsewhere at the moment.
Wilson, love the waistcoats and the stach. Where do you get your vests from?
I wonder if you could just do your own repairs on it. I have one and will probably take it apart if an issue arises. I believe little rubber gaskets are used and probably some springs. Just a thought.
I have the IM Corona version of this and it is lovely in design but if there is even the slightest breeze it will blow out. Not a great lighter for outside which is were I predominantly smoke so most cases I end up having to pull out my zippo. I would say for 99% of people a bic lighter or a zippo with a pipe insert is the best lighter you can use.
I have a Kiribi that I purchase from @ThePipeNook 2+ years ago and it works great. It's my daily lighter, smoking 1-2 bowls a day and have never had a single issue with it. Would highly recommend it. If I'm hiking or fishing I bring Bic EZ reach lighters that have the 1 inch stack on them.
I also purchased a Kiribi (Kenshi) from The Pipe Nook. While I haven’t used mine a ton (I don’t smoke a pipe as often as I should), I have had zero issues with mine. I do go out of my way to clean off the carbon, with a pipe cleaner, after every use.
If you watch the video at speed 1.2 it's so much better!
I'll stick with my standard Zippo Lighter, I have two. One is in my computer room and the other is my everyday carry. The maintainance factor is a relatively small price to pay for a long lasting lighter
Myself, like other seasoned smokers probably have a variety of lighters. They all serve the purpose.
Old Boy styles are no good outdoors. Zippo is better for that. Best suggestion is use the best quality fuel you can find, Best meaning Highly filtered, and quality flints as well. Zippo flints will work, I think they are a softer material. Also clean the top end when you can. They do get dirty and soot buildup will occur. Mainly just enjoy the hobby. If you get a turd for a lighter dont use it.
Dave
You ever smoke that MacQueen Ranger? It’s one of my favorites.
While not stylish, I find a small but stemmed Bic lighter suits my needs. I could just get a large regular bic but they always burn my thumb.
Hey Wilson, these seem really nice. Where are they made?
Japan
I got a Norman Rockwell lighter as part of a set. Nice lighter...but it quit working after a month. To me not worth th bother of getting it fixed. Still looking for a nice lighter but for now, wooden matches and off the shelf disposable lighers get the job done.
Zippo, butane pipe insert, job done, and would easily get you to a 10, 15, 25 +++ year review while still smiling
Lol is that a Juul I see in the background? 😆
Im still looking for my lighter fir my pipes
IM Coronas Old Boy….all others are copies.
I bought a zippo shell on ebay and put a butane insert in it. so far so good for $25.
Man I love the look of these but I hear they are finicky and need repairs. I think I’ll stick with my zippo which I love to use and it’s almost bulletproof. People complain about the taste but I think that’s overrated. You do have to fill them often, but there’s no perfect solution here. You can use a bic lighter but it’s not very elegant. Matches are probably best for taste but they’re terrible to use when relighting alot or if there’s wind. Me personally I like the zippo pipe lighter. It’s a generational piece of good quality that feels good and is nice to use. Who doesn’t love that zippo sound?
A lighter that isn't really impact resistant doesn't seem like a quality lighter to me. Any lighter over $35 should be just as if not more durable than a Bic
Definitely NOT wind resistant
I’d rather put that money towards more tobacco or another pipe. Flames are flames.
