    Hey everyone,
Due to the negative comments we would like to address some things:
    1. Regarding the comments about the coffee shop scene: We did not mean to make light of the situation shown in the movie. We have read your comments and know this is something that does happen and we didn’t mean to offend anyone. The reason some of us weren’t engaged during that scene was because the acting by the American cashier was a little off-putting and when the music picked up and Shashi ran out of the coffee shop, there were points that seemed more dramatized. We still thought this scene was powerful (we said in the video that Sridevi’s acting was amazing in this scene!) and we would suggest that you watch our review coming out soon to understand all our thoughts on this.
    2. Many people are saying we talk too much during the react. I’m sorry if that is annoying to you but that is how we react. When we talk, laugh, and discuss points in the movie that means we are engaged in the film and love it! Our review of English Vinglish will show that! Also we don’t want to just copy other react channels, we want to be genuine and honest. If you want to watch the full reactions where there are points were we don’t talk as much, that is available on our Patreon.
    3. Some people are saying we are doing this just for the money. That is entirely not true. We make barely anything on these videos and definitely not enough to support three people. We all work full time (Ben works in IT, Mike is a financial adviser and Isaac is a mechanical engineer). We do these videos in our very limited free time! We make these react videos because you guys first suggested it! And we love learning about the Indian cultures! All these negative comments complaining about us really discourages us from continuing to dive into Indian culture. Maybe that’s what you want but we hope you can be more understanding to us as we continue to learn and enjoy Indian film.
Please keep the comments respectful to everyone. It is very discouraging to see war break out in the comments so often.

Well have had such experiences in America and in many other parts of the world.. Its 1000 times scarier for someone who cant speak the language and has been put down for NOT knowing english.. The point is to show the incredible amount of panic a person goes through in a foreign land and feels like they messed up cause of not being able to communicate.. further you dont hear the meaning of words you hear tone and expression of people around you.. Thats what propogates that fear.. That scene was needed to establish that emotion and tension. Its not your fault for not knowing that visceral feeling.

Came here to see if you even want to learn anything from previous comments, because I genuinely want to support you if given a chance..
Just take time to learn about what you are watching, respect and open your minds! The "negative" comments as you call it will automatically turn into immense support. Give respect! Receive respect as simple as that!

This coffee shop scene was so hard for me to watch in the theater. I can totally relate to this. Things are different in India. I once visited Malaysia on office work and I had a big cultural shock. I went to the cafeteria to eat at the office. There we first need to take all the items we need, and in the end there would be a counter, they check the items you have on the plate and give the bill accordingly and you have to pay. I was a bit confused, I still remember the people behind the counter laughing at me and whispering something, because I wasn't able to figure what to eat, as many food items were totally new to me. I felt really embarrassed and bad. It costs 0$ to be nice. Please be nice to people.

Especially for sashi, being the only one in her family who cant speak english she feels vey left out & the fact that they keep mocking her for it and subtly belittle her for it does not help. And all this becomes much worse when she goes abroad, and then she gets yelled at, at the coffee shop...for something as simple as getting coffee, that others can do within seconds, she stuggled so much just bcos she doesn't know english. So its very understandable why she started freaking out and crying, i dont think it was over dramatic or anything at all.

Guys don't laugh and judge the movies you watch cause the culture varies and also it depends on the time the movie was released. Most americans cannot relate to movies like this cause their language ENGLISH is learned and spoken by people of all countries mostly so they happily enjoy the privilege. Some americans make fun of people bacause of their grammatical mistakes in english which pisses me off so much cause bro they themselves just know one language and they dare make fun of people who are multilingual like be for real. Sadly english is considered a must for everyone irrespective of their native language and they are also made fun of . It must be so easy for americans for real. The way non native english speakers speak english is almost perfection but if someone from america has to learn hindi or something then they will be able to relate and also most indians are taught to adjust and adapt which makes them more vulnerable than others who demand and live their life as they wish

Good thing is that people get a lot of good jobs if they have good English because most of global business happens in English medium.
But the bad thing in our country is knowing English is cool and not knowing and speaking it badly puts you as an inferior person.
Good thing is we have very large English speaking population due to which we have strong services sector IT sector with sales services to the Western countries and get a lot of exports but the bad thing is a lot of people have bad mindset towards their own language and that's really distressing.

This movie is a gem. You know what nowadays also people like me could write English but speaking in front of people is not an easy job for many. As our native language is different we struggle a lot to maintain the decorum of some places. Even getting a job is difficult if you are not good English speakers. So English speaking people should understand although it is a global language it's not easy to learn a different language than your native one. So being sympathetic to non English speakers and helping them out is a good deed indeed rather than laughing at them.

The coffee shop scene is from Shashi's POV, that's why it's so intense. The coffee shop lady was rude, which is not an inherently American thing, but it was the language barrier that caused Shashi to panic. I think this is why they chose a black lady to play the role so that people won't misunderstand it as racism (not that it doesn't exist), since the focus of the movie is on language rather than race.

Yes thats a catholic school, or as known in India convent school. They r run by catholic Churches and missionaries, and they r sought after in India because Anglican-Christian education is associated with upper class due to colonialism.
The father had weak Hindi because he is from the state of Kerala, where Malayalam is the official language.
Altho church funded schools hv been in India (specially Malabar coast, Kerala where the father character is from) since 3rd century, English or Western education was established as the standard form under British rule by Lord Macaulay in 19th century, his intention was to create a class of people who wld be Indian by race, but English in every other aspects. Many Indians educated through this system wld go on to serve the British crown at the expense of their countrymen and when the Brits left, this new class of english educated Indians became the political and ruling class of India. Hence a lot of Indians push their kids to learn english in an attempt to escape the perils of being lower class.
Also u shld know that christianity actually started in India before it was legalized in Europe. Saint Thomas established the first church in Kerala in 52C.E under the patronage of Hindu dynasties, while christianity reached Greece during the same time through Saint Paul, it wasnt until 3rd century that it was a well established religion.

English is seen as an aspirational language in India, as it opens up opportunities in various jobs. Many white-collar jobs in India also deal with overseas clients because of which being well-versed in English tends to give you an advantage over others (who are not).
The schools in India are also divided into "English-Medium", "Hindi-Medium" schools, and similarly for other regional languages. The misfortune is that English-medium schools tend to be better in infrastructure, and overall education equality in general. Therefore people tend to draw a conclusion that a person who is fluent in English must be relatively more educated and smart.

The movie isn't too far fetched from reality. English is considered the language of the elite and in the big cities where people from different part of India lives ; a lot of the communication happens in english, especially in the newer generation. So the daughter is ashamed of her mom since not speaking english is often looked down upon. Often equated with backward or "uncultured" , especially in the upper social classes.
Also the majority of the older generation are not so proficient in english, and contrary to what the movie shows Hindi isnt the national language of India. India doesn't have a national language, hindi is widely spoken in the north, but the east and the south struggles speaking it.

Man... sometimes i think India is on par with America in every way, now, but then i see videos like this and feel so hurt, because a scene that is so hard-hitting for most indians, flew right over your heads. Its still common for me, even now, to ask my friends if their parents/grandparents speak English, before visiting them, so i know how to greet them. I clearly remember getting suspended from school for telling a teacher to shut up because she wouldnt let my mom, who is slow with English, speak. My grandmother knows 3 languages, 2 of which she learnt herself through books, far before the internet was a thing, and yet, she has to tell people over and over again "sorry, no english". If you havent seen the kindest, smartest, most welcoming and gentle people around you, fall short because of nothing other than not knowing English, of course you wouldnt know what that scene means to some people.

The English Teacher from the school is from Kerala which is a southern Indian state where Catholicism is more prevalent. In the southern Indian states, Hindi is not a common language and south Indians don't like to speak in hindi either. Thats why the teacher didnt know any Hindi.

    • @EagleOverTheSea
      @EagleOverTheSea Рік тому +1

Hindi belongs to the Indo-European language family. South Indian languages belong to a different language family that is endemic to India. Learning a language from a different family is always a little more challenging. This is also why non-Dravidian language speakers find it difficult to pick up Dravidian languages. Or a person like me who speaks languages from both families gets cold-feet when it comes to learning a Sino-Tibetan language (although I would love to attempt it someday). Some people have more affinity to learning languages than others. So it is not about dislike but just personal inclination / limitations that people in the south do not speak Hindi. Just as people in the North do not try to learn languages from other language families.

Times of India is an equally popular english newspaper here in Pune maharashtra (though there are many other english newspapers like hindustan times, the hindu, DNA and few more). English newspapers have readers only in cities, in non metro towns only newspapers in local languages sell. No Hindi newspapers here in maharashtra. This film's story is set in pune maharashtra.
