FINALLY. An actual video about the history and origin of waacking. So much false information out there, so I'm glad I can just post your video whenever I see false information floating around. Thanks so much, Kumari! 😘💖💝

+Kumari Suraj Yes ma'am! I just seriously got into waacking about six months ago. And my friends and I (who have been, I guess, tutoring me) will be seeing you in Dallas in August! We can't wait! Thanks for the reply!

This is amazing. Everyone wants to appropriate the dance and the culture, but I never see people show this kind of love for its origins. You really make my heart swell with this. Also, I've only ever known the east coast side of the story. Everything about the LA side you talk about here is entirely new information to me. Thank you!

    • @RhythmAddictedState

Could you please share the "East Coast side of the story", if that's not a burden for you? I'm a baby waacker who is trying to learn the dance's history, and there is so much misleading info. :)

As a gay man who's always been "at home" in the style of waacking, thank you so much for creating this video. I've been dancing for years and it's always been a struggle to explain what waacking was to others because of all the conflicting resources online. I'm going to show my fellow dancers this. :)

I am so lucky to have seen and taken class with Kumari when she came to SF. She made the class feel so inclusive. And her performance for "Say My Name" was so beautiful. I may try to take waacking again. I was trying to learn hip/hop and house at that time, but at times it felt so intimidating.

    Thanks Kumari,
Entertaining and informative. Came across the term on a BBC news article about an Indian film, thought I'd investigate. Turns out that this is pretty much how I have danced after I got into dancing, ('88 in a squat in Northwest London). Still do it in the living room today. Maybe I should go out more and strut my funky stuff? May be old but I can still ping with the best of them's older mates.

I don't aspire to be a great waacker, or anything of the sort, but I want to thank you so much for this knowledge! Just because I don't see myself rockin the style doesn't mean that I don't want to know as much as I can about it. I love the All Styles community, and the way it brings different genres of dance together. I have always been curious about waacking since the big boom it's had in the battle scene over the past few years.

I brought Shabba Doo to Providence Rhode Island back in 2016 to teach some classes for me. He spent 3 days here in my city and loved the local scene and people, and one of those classes was - "whacking"" During our time together, we had a lot of talks about popping, locking, and whacking. It was a great time. I always wondered what it was he was doing in the films, flying his arms around and jumping about lol. I miss Him he was a great dancer and a good friend of mine.

I an fascinated by the desire "dolphin" 🐬 at 05:34 I mean the fact that whack like house is a club dance I wonder who contributed that move to the house dance vocabulary
also to clarify what will be a vague question, is LA gritty, or is that NY as vogue, unlike Waack (passionate) seems fierce yet I am confused as to why it would emerge from disco LAnd

    Hi Kumari!
Thank for the precious knowledge! I'm literally jotting down notes on my notebook so I will be able to understand and remember the culture and history of waccking so I can explain and share my limited knowledge to people who wants to learn more about the culture of waacking! This is also so I will be able to relate and apply it whenever I dance! However, one thing, I still do not quite understand was the part where you say punking is the action, and waacking is the reaction, (chicken before the egg kind of thing). Would you mind explaining it in simpler terms for people like me who are not exactly good in english thank you!
    Love from,
    Singapore :)

    • @KumariSuraj
      @KumariSuraj  8 років тому +2

Hi Chase. I'm glad this was helpful. Punking came first. Hence it is the initial Action. Whacking is a response or reaction to the initial Action. Whacking is the response and came second after the inspiration of Punking. Hope this helps.

After this (great) video, I was wondering: shouldn't we reclaim the word punking back since it was basically erased by ""correctness politics"", pushing back the very people that initiated this style? Or is it just too different from the OGs now and too far beyond the lgbt community and should keep being called it this way?

The name is kinda reclaimed. A bunch of people including Viktor Manoel, Ana Sanchez, Alyssa Chloe ,Bagsy , Kumari as well and alot more people actually do use the term but depends on who you listen to and watch they use the word in slightly different or similar contexts.

I'm currently a college student studying in Los Angeles and I come from Taiwan. I honestly do not understand why more people back home practice waacking a lot more than the people I know here. By far. Collegiate dancing, at least, that I see of, is dominated by hip hop.
Is what I see due to because of I'm in college so I don't know too much people out there or is there some other reason?

Of course the hets took the dance and changed the name to strip it off its queer roots. Let’s never forget its origin! I’ve been fascinated with it ever since I first found out about it.

i love this! i knew about the origin in the gay club scene, but not the full evolution from punking and into the mainstream :)
