@@majesticeagle5461 While simple, you need experience with firearms and firearm safety to ensure nobody dies on set, otherwise you end up with Alec Baldwin. There's a lot of background you need or should have in order to manage ammunition and firearms on a set otherwise people can die. Not specifically experience with fake ammunition, but with firearms and firearm safety in general. It's not just the managing of fake ammunition, that's just surface level.
It may be a simple thing like putting on a hardhat in construction or checking your air before you scuba dive, but experienced people tend to know to do this and minimize safety issues as the people who don't either don't get employed, certified, or die in the process. When other people's lives are at risk you need to make sure that even simple things are observed every single time.

the ball bearing in the bullet is a trick I always use for our P&P game "Set Decoration"
I got a load of complete bullets without powder, pull out the projectile, put a drop of oil in the primer to deactivate it and put in a ball bearing before pushing the projectile back in.
this way, ifanyone ever gets suspicious about potentially illegal things in my home (germany has strict gun laws), I can just shake the bullet and it's easily solved

In the military, we had some practice with dummy ammunition before our first shooting instructions. The dummies we used had holes drilled at their side, but, even then, our very chill and absolutely exemplary liutenant demanded we treated everything around as live ammunition in our pistol training. One of my squad colleages decided to fool around by fake-shooting a friend of his: liutenant went almost litterally ballistic on him: he interrupted his talking mid-sentence to scream at the guy about how much of an animal and a monster that guy was. I still have no idea how come that guy got no time of disciplinary arrest for that fake shooting.
Our crazy-ass captain, however, wasn't half as carefull. In the dummy ammunition rifle training, he would demonstrate how to aim and shoot with the thing while pointing the fake-ammunition rifle towards a whole auditorium full of us, and would have the people taking their turn trying the guns to do the same. We didn't like him.

Back in the 1980s I made dummy rounds for indie movie projects and live theater plays for friends who were on a tight budget but were safety conscious.
Back then I drilled holes in the case, and used expended primers or fake metal inserts for the primer pocket. But the BB inside to rattle check is brilliant - I'm ashamed I never thought of that trick years ago.

I feel like a lot of the audience in the movie Nobody missed the fact that the main character could tell that the burglars in his house were using an unloaded revolver. They had to be told. If you know how revolvers work and you see what he sees in that scene it makes it a different scene. It's kind of like the scene in Saving Private Ryan near the beginning with the two men who aren't German soldiers and didn't shoot at the Americans; they're explaining the situation and then they get killed: that scene just hits different if you happen to speak whatever language they're speaking.

Piece of advice that some of you may already know: if you need to use dummy rounds, _always_ get them professionally made. Don't try and make them yourself, that could end up causing serious problems.

I love your content and I love your puns and dad jokes. However, in light of the thankfully rare events that have happened on sets where the appropriate level of respect for and training in firearm safety were problematic, I fully appreciate that you gave this video with all the seriousness it required. Thank you.

It’s almost like the movie I won’t mention by name didn’t have any experienced staff. They could have arranged that direct into the camera shot SO MANY other ways that didn’t put the camera crew in the sights of any firearm, loaded, modified for film, or otherwise. It’s like the train crash shot in The Fugitive. An actual train was derailed for the film and one shot showed the train coming at the camera. The shot was done through a mirror instead of putting a camera on the tracks. I se no reason at all they couldn’t have used a different arrangement any time we have a shot like this.

I understand that the ball bearing makes a distinctive sound but to say live rounds don't rattle is wrong. Live rounds can make a kind of rattling sound if the amount of powder in them doesn't produce a lightly compressed powder charge. When you make bullets (especially precision rifle hand loads) the amount of powder that is needed to fill the void inside the case is not the amount of powder you want for the gun to be either safe to fire or accurate.

  • @johnsmith-jk9ol

NOT ALL LIVE ROUNDS ARE SILENT WHEN SHAKEN !!!!!!!!
In many live rounds you will hear the powder inside moving around when shaken.

Didn't Brandlon Lee get killed by a dummy round? They used the dummy round for a shot where they showed the bullet in the gun, and then reloaded the same gun with a blank for a shot where it was fired. Except something went wrong and the dummy round ended up lodged in the barrel while the blanks were loaded. The blank went off, and turned the dummy round into a live round

He has another video where he shows the entire procedure. The gun is supposed to have a rod forced down to make sure that there’s nothing in the barrel before you fire blanks. The movie the crow did not do that.

If you can't hear anything when you shake a live AR-15 round, then something's up with your hearing! I can hear the powder shaking around in there very clearly. I'm sure it doesn't sound like a ball bearing but saying "one is louder than the other" is very different from saying "one makes noise and the other is totally silent".

For the record, a "Blank" is still increadibly dangerous. And should never be fired near anyone. Blanks still have gunpowder in them and can can kill.
I like the idea of having a hole in them for easier security. But I would also place a hole where the primer is. That way those rounds will never be mistaken with real ones.

You understand that nobody’s asking for your opinion. And he didn’t just make this up. He’s an actual prop master in Hollywood. This is his job. He’s explaining to you what the safety precautions are supposed to be. He’s not asking for random suggestions from the Internet.

Do you not understand how the internet, let alone social media works?
He wants feedback, opinions, suggestions, and general community interaction. It keeps his channel active and engaging. It's the same for ANY creator on ANY platform.
As for my comment, it IS NOT a "opinion". IT'S A FACT. Blanks literally have gunpowder in them and HAVE killed others. Particularly at close range. His being "a prop master in Hollywood" has absolutely nothing to do with anything I've stated. And it certainly doesn't mean he can't still learn new things.
Grow the Hell up. You illiterate leftist sure love to find any little thing to complain about.

Some producers and staff get a bit rusty , thanks for the primer on gun safety.
If some dummy draws a blank on safety, regardles where, more than just excrement is about to hit the fan.
Btw, how about replacing primers with hard rubber plugs, makes them also look and feel different, in addition to the ball 🐻.
