- Singapore Airlines flight: CEO apologises for ‘traumatic experience’ | BBC News
Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong has offered his "deepest apologies to everyone affected" after a flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence, during which a passenger died.
The man, named as 73-year-old Geoff Kitchen, died of a suspected heart attack.
Seventy-one wounded passengers are being treated at a hospital in Bangkok, where the plane made an emergency landing. Six are in critical condition.
Singapore's new PM Lawrence Wong has promised a "thorough investigation”.

singapore airlines taking responsibility even when it's not their fault is such a class act. one of the best airlines!
The CEO apologising isn't an admittance of guilt. He's just being compassionate and mitigating any future issues.
This is an ‘act of god’ anyway. This is nobody’s fault
@@extrude22Don’t be silly.
@@helenpauls1496you’re the silly one wtf?
@@helenpauls1496I’m pretty sure they’re referring to the term ‘act of God’ not that it was an actual act of God. Either way… a little bit of kindness would be nice!
I wish you well.
@@extrude22that's a ridiculous comment. #dontbeaplonker, there's no god. Science is the only theory here.
This displayed Thai's impeccable quick reaction force in handling a medical situation, bravo!
Im also very impressed with Singapore Airlines PR, ground staff and all-round service. Highly detailed and very prepared. In other videos i noticed how they quickly build barriers and even despatched a team of staff to escort every passenger to prevent reporters from getting close and impede their privacy. Such a well-thought out and highly efficient execution by SIA. Truly world class!
And their socials were constantly updated on their status really reflects their commitment to contunually communicate for the benefit of pax's loved ones. CEO apologising, really reflects their humane side.
It's unforeseen turbulence. The CEO has nothing to appologise for.
It didn't sound like an apology; it was an entirely appropriate statement of regret. BBC characterized it as an "apology"
I certainly agree that the airline has nothing to apologize for -- unless it develops that they had prior warning of turbulence and chose not to divert. Nobody I've heard is saying that.
It wasn't turbulence, it was an air pocket and the plane radars do not detect that in advance. So get your facts right matey.
@@ADY99ish you're the one that needs to get his facts right, matey. "An air pocket, also known as clear-air turbulence (CAT), is an area of rapidly changing air pressure that can cause sudden and violent movements of an aircraft." There is technically no such thing are an air pocket - its clear-air turbulence.
@@KK-lg8uz Looks like you have just Googled that and done a copy and paste matey - 🤣🤣🤣.
@@ADY99ish But he was right....time to man up and apologise?
Everyone showed compassion to this accident
Thank you Thailand and all officials Excellent help👍👍👍👏👏👏
They shouldn’t apologise, the pilot did a great job in a stressful situation, things this like this happen
SIA's tagline is "a great way to fly" which did not obviously happen for this flight. The CEO is probably apologising for that.
You don’t get it. The woke need warm and fuzzy apologies for anything that makes them feel icky
@@1rstTry, you incredible dumbo. You really don’t understand Asian culture, stupid ignoramus. Losing face is one of the worst things that can happen to you in most Asian cultures. It has nothing to do whatsoever with social injustice, which is what being woke is about. But clearly, you are also too mentally challenged to know what that word means.
it is Asian culture to apologise, only woke liberals in the west would never understand

I think someone dying is a bit more than feeling "icky"
I guess if it was your family member you would just be ok with getting the body back and nothing more said ?
Yet if you're an American you'd probably be consulting a lawyer to see who you can sue.
That gentleman with head injury is very well spoken
great reminder of the importance of fastening a seatbelt
Try to imposed that on long-haul flights.
@@abrahamlevi3556 then dummies will get bounced around the cabin
@@abrahamlevi3556 If you are not walking about (going to the bog or whatever), it doesn't hurt to have a belt across your lap. Volvo-developed 3 point seat belts as in cars would be better. I wear one when driving my car and think nothing of it. On a long air trip, it could help to hold a pillow if you want to take a nap. Without doubt, fewer people would have been hurt if they had been wearing seat belts. I don't want some cavalier idiot flying across the aisle at me or a 9 year old bouncing over the back of the seat via the ceiling, thank you very much.
I agree.. but how do we avoid using lavatories in a 12 hour flight.. like we need to wear diapers or something?
@@dane1563 Well, not saying can't go to the lavatory. I suppose just bad luck if you happen to be up during the incident.
Saying sorry is sharing the pain. Responsibility will have to wait for the investigation report.
He dont need to say sorry and its not his fault, because turbulence happens everywhere, are you trying to imply that someone are responsible???
@@remueltaran671He’s being compassionate.
@@remueltaran671 - That's for the investigation to find out.
Why apologize? It sounds like the plane held together and the pilots did a great job.
Assuming no structural damage, this is somewhat welcome good news for Boeing.
Even if the company has no fault for any unfortunate accident like this, protocol is to apologize anyway.
SIA🇸🇬💯
The pilots have weather information and usually fly around spots of turbulent weather. So I assume they will have questions to the pilots.
An apology isn’t the same as legal liability. It’s a gesture of goodwill. Doesn’t hurt to apologize, especially with the death and trauma that so many experienced.
I thought the TURBULENCE should be the one apologising.
It does not seem to be an apology statement. It is more about expressing his regrets and condolences to those who were involved in this tragic incident.
Love how many people treating an apology as an admission of guilt. If I ever say “Sorry for your loss” to someone in the future, I had nothing to do with their death, just putting it out there.
Rest in peace to that poor soul who lost his life, and God speed to those healing from injuries. What a horrific thing to experience.
SQ is a wonderful airline and I sincerely doubt the pilots intentionally wanted to fly into severe turbulence.
Respectful for apologising, but nothing to apologise for. All that could have been done by the crew and emergency services was done. Unavoidable accident.
Well a guy died? The airline is 100% responsible for the safety and health of passengers
We are @ an age where no apologies mean you are not fit for CEO,and can get sued !
@jakehowie442 if he did have some medical issues previously. who knows, any other airlines would appologize .... never.
Well at least the world learned a lesson. Always wear a seat belt.
Yep
I feel sorry for the passengers and crew who went through this nightmare! I also sympathize with the Singapore Airlines leadership and staff who feel shocked and apologetic about something beyond their control and present day technology. To the pilots - outstanding job! You landed the plane successfully in extreme turbulence and probability saved many lives with your corrective actions!
Singapore airlines is the best flight company , things like this happen
I'm feeling Sorry for the victim
he died of a heart attack......it could have also happened to him in singapore during some strenuous walking.
Oh WALKING! Thank god.
Best my ass.
When a passenger dies inflight protocol is to immediately land - Clear air turbulence (CAT) is unseen and a natural hazard of flight at cruising altitudes - Always wear seatbelts - The pilots do for a reason..........
He has nothing to apologise for. It is a terrible and rare occurence.
really?
It is rare, correct, won't be long till they blame it on CLIMATE CHANGE!!!!!!!!
Not apologizing seems callous when hundreds of passengers were traumatized and there was a fatality and some serious injuries. Even if it's not the airlines fault they're responsible for their passengers well being during the flight so it's only proper to apologize.
@@cutekitty3067 they'd doing the right thing apologising but they don't have to. You cant plan for "acts of god"
@@SydneyTravellersGuide Regardless of being an act of god, Singapore air still needs to compensate the victims and pay for their medical bills though.
Always trust your Airline, Aircraft and the pilot, and Singapore Airlines those of you who have travelled in a Airbus A380 in Singapore Airline or even Airbus A320 in Singapore Airline ,will understand it’s the safest Airline ,along with Qantas . Kudos to the pilots who had to fly in dangerous conditions and have landed safely.
Even when the engine explodes, they land the plane. Good.
Still it is better when you fasten the seatbelt!
@@Rob2That wasn't SIA. That was Qantas flying out of Singapore. SIA pilots wouldn't have been able to overcome a problem of that magnitude.
The passengers are so agonised with this experience that some will be scarred forever whilst others would end up becoming adventurers.
I think you should have a stop over ,a transit instead of travelling for hours together.
A very near relative of mine took a non stop 12 hours 50 minutes plane from New Delhi to Melbourne, route got to travel to Burma, and the places that come travelling to Australia. Melbourne is on the Southern Ocean very near to Tasmania.
So u guys are saying don’t apologise?? Then do what???? Laugh and smile on a vacation???
So much talk about the turbulence, one person died, many more injured. 228 people survived, yes they live to tell a tale. Where is the report on the pilots and the crew who did a tremendous job to save them? Talk about them.
Exactly!
He doesn't have to apologize over turbulence😂
He’s apologizing for a death and trauma that occurred. Not that any of it is his fault. 🙄
If anything the turbulence should be apologising, the pilots landing the plane in one piece should speak for itself.
Ppl are more sensitive nowadays so need to apologize for anything first, else someone appearing at any quarter will come and slam you for not apologizing. Also need to express condolences etc to appease and placate one and all and to be politically correct
Seatbelt doesn’t bother at all, people should only take it off when they go to the bathroom.
Two things compulsory - seat belts on and travel insurance.
Turbulence can come out off no where suddenly and unexpectedly once traveling these things are expected at times it's unforeseen tragedy my condolences to the family of the passenger who loss his life and may the other injured passengers have a speedy and full recovery
Turbulence is natural phenomenon. Pilots has saved the plane by emergency landing.
This was sympathy, not an apology. They are repeatedly rated the best airline in the world, and their crew and staff seem to have done a sterling job.
Everyone is busy to say the CEO doesn’t need to apologize, it wasn’t necessary, why would he apologized?
No.. the Brand (Singapore Airlines) are apologizing for the traumatic incident during their flight, simply being empathetic and assuring that everyone who was on board will be taken care of 100%.
Again, this is not pilot or plane issue, this is horrendous turbulence.
Praying for every injured passenger to get well very soon ❤️🩹
There are two things that need to be clarified. Why was the turbulence not detected and especially such a strong one and also why the plane plunged so steep for so long.
Yes..
Because it didn't plunge... I think one or two journalists saw the flightradar24 data and made assumptions as to when the turbulence occurred. The drop by 6000ft from 37000 to 31000ft happens over several minites. This implies a controlled descent by the pilots (i.e. it would have been very smooth).
There is a sharp bump in the altitude data about 10 minutes before the controlled descent, which is most likely the high speed drop that caused the chaos.
I have a brother moving from Detroit Michigan United States of America to Merida Mexico I will go visit but will still be afraid to fly. Sad to hear the man from United Kingdom lost his life condolences from Detroit.
The CEO's apology was to comfort the passengers and the people at large, a noble gesture indeed.
Normally, when an aircraft is about to hit an air turbulence, the captain would switch on the fasten seat belt sign without fail, but sadly enough, most of the passengers had failed to obey. This is a common problem among air travellers because we take the warning lightly. Let it be a lesson and be ready to expect the unexpected.
Noticed that as soon as the incident took place, all the world media, particularly the Western media, were quick set in motion as if they were looking for more stories that led to the incident.
20 people are still in intensive care. 6 with brain injuries. An independent investigation should be started.
Singapore Airlines is one of the most reputable and admired company in the Aviation industry. Just like cars, cruiseships, trains - Airlines encounter accidents too. Singapore Airlines will definitely make all the best effort to take care of the passengers especially those who affected. Be careful with United States investigators too. They are strict and unapologetic for this kind of mistakes.
God's grace and blessings be with all lives affected and their family members by this unknown disaster. Passenger who survived voice @1:37.
Worst turbulence I've ever experienced was in the strait Singapore - Jakarta. It's something else out there
Bermuda triangle monsters moving there or what?
People are missing the point of the CEO apology...the pilots have radars they can use...it is up to the airlines to say what to do about turbulence, as avoiding it, implies at times severe delays and more spent fuel, missed transfers, etc.
It’s clear air turbulence doesn’t show up on weather radar
some commenters here say that CEO no need to apologize. well it is an Asian mindset to say sorry whether guilty or not as a sign of respect for customer service. Things Woke westerners would never understand at all.
[Things Woke westerners would never understand at all.]
i was with you until your clumsy politicization of it. I invite you to DIAF.
English people say sorry all the time for every little thing.
As a Singaporean, your comment makes no sense whatsoever.
And, when will people like you stop with this criticising everything you don't like as 'woke'? That makes zero sense too.
My husband and I always fly Singapore Airlines hundred times, it's always a five stars flight, and this is from DFW to Philippines. always a very great flight. No one can predict the weather now so please don't blame no one. Our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Kitchen. as far as we know Singapore Airlines crews did their best and we applaude them. As to the pasengers no matter what airline you're in.....Always fastened your seatbelts unless you're going to use the lavatory. it's common sense. just saying.:)
So sad
Death, Injuries and Trauma suffered deserves adequate compensation. The passengers would've experienced extreme distress and thought they were in the last moments of their lives. The emotional toll of the free fall and emergency landing may well result in medical conditions in the near/short term.
The poor guy who died probably had a heart attack and may never have realised that the plane didn't crash. I was once in a plane over the Atlantic that hit turbulence and dropped for a few seconds (felt a lot longer but was probably just a few seconds). I braced myself between the seat in front of me and the back of my seat, held on hoping it would end soon. The moment I was sure we were going to crash I let out the weirdest high-pitched shriek that has ever emanated from my lips.
A moment later we stopped falling and laughter rippled through the cabin. I was slightly embarrassed because I thought everyone was laughing at my shriek.
😂😂😂😅 🙏
Great job for the Pilots. God is good❤
Always wear your belt
it's a long haul flight....what happens if you need to go to the bathroom? Do you suggest to just do it in your pants?
@karenmbbaxter dim, very dim.
You believe I think no one should get up for the toilet? Cmon.
Ideally yes
@@karenmbbaxter Man in the video explains it well: he had been to the toilet, came back, sat down, DID NOT FASTEN HIS BELT, and then he was launched to the ceiling.
Had he followed the advice, nothing would have happened to him. But he chose to not fasten his belt immediately after sitting down, not even when there was slight turbulence.

Rest in peace to that deceased, Geoffrey Kitchen!! My respects to the him and his family during this difficult time. My prayers are with the families of the rest of the victims as well! The victims' families should be offered Ex-Gratia for what they'd gone through.
This happened to my Mum’s flight back in the 1970’s. She said the plane hit an “air-pocket.” And the stewardess did a somersault in mid air.
Never apologise if its not your fault
I hope they pulled the circuit breakers on the flight data recorder so that it wouldn't be over-written.

It’s not a matter of whether the CEO is at fault or not. It’s about taking ownership of your company and, by extension, its operations safety and passengers safety. It’s also a large part about being a leader and a CEO.

Turbulence happens sometimes it can be routed round sometimes not. Some parts of the world and at some times of the year you are more likely to encounter it Keep your seat belt on even on long haul it doesn't have to be tight, stow all hand baggage when you are not actually accessing it.

Say that to flight SQ006. What an idiot
I read there was low pressure (depression) happening in the Bay of Bengal. Why don't airlines take weather events into consideration and alter flightpaths accordingly? Apologising is not enough.

The testimony of the interviewed man should be investigated, if he said the plane plunged and lost altitude fast, then the plane should also be inspected to make sure there was no mechanical issue while experiencing turbulence.
It goes to show your lack of understanding on clear air turbulence or downdraft

Why is he apologizing??! It’s not the plane’s fault!
Another Boeing airliner has done this before but only the cceiling was damaged.
It might be an issue with the plane.
Wave lift or sink might be another cause. This occurs when the air flows up and down as it goes along the earths surface and goes up and down the mountains etc.
