Fun Fact: The SEGA-CD sound chip works exactly as the sound chip used in the SNES, so it plays instruments based in samples (soundfonts). This is why it sounds like a Yoshi's Island music, because it uses some of the same instruments.
@@gammaboost If the Nintendo PS ever existed, it would be like Sega-CD, but with a more powerfull Soundchip, just like the PSX one playing the Crash/Spyro OST. Even so, it would have a more complete variety of instruments and Synths to work with, so the possibilities are infinite.

@Alexander Gaudion I did 2 playthroughs of the game with the 2 soundtracks I ended up preferring the US soundtrack but the JP soundtrack is just as awesome
It's kind of impossible to do. The sounds are mixed together in one whole streamed sample. The reason the Past themes can be deconstructed is because they're porgrammed, so they're just music files with everything used to make it. The only way to decompose CD/streamed audio is if you have the original files, or you have a 100% accurate recreation of it. The furthest you can deconstruct streamed audio is the left and right stereo sound channels, and frequency cancelling.
Why do the pianos, both tine electric and acoustic, sound so good in this compressed, digitised form? It’s like the compression also gave the the samples more character.
do you mean limited number of sounds playing at the same time...? because up to 8 samples (7 + SFX here) can play at the time on the Sega CD's sound chip, whereas on the stock Genesis/MD it's 1 sample at a time plus 5 FM synth channels and 2 tone and 1 noise
I don't remember if Sonic Team was formed by this point, but I do agree that Masafumi Ogata and Naofumi Hataya both made phenomenal compositions for this game.
I love channel 2. On its own it’s very silent and almost invisible, but it serves as a massive improvement for when the main instrument comes. It just goes crazy and sounds amazing, putting a spicy tone to the mix
That's delay/echo chanel- basically duplicate of the 3rd channel but with delay and lower volume. number of Sega Megadrive/genesis games had that used.
Stumbled across while looking for palm tree panic remixes, and hearing all the channels used independently before being played together was actually really fascinating. I already loved this song, but this video gave me an even deeper appreciation of not only the song itself but the process of its composition. Thank you
Wow. I love this song, really sells the prehistoric feel. The bass is great, the Piano sounds a bit weird but still great. Whatever Channel 2 and 4 are doing, keep on keeping on. Channel 5 makes some unique wack sounds sometimes but it's still real nice. I like the way unused Channels become drums and percussion, smart move. Overall it's a jam and I love this soundtrack, I have THE ENTIRE THING (Including album versions, both JPN/PAL and US versions and Official Remixes and let me tell you. Not a waste of space.
great to see it deconstructed. the song always gave me an emptyness feeling, some kind of aesthetic instrument is making me feel this way the song just feels like the past you know? the weird thing is that this song dosnt realy compare to any of the past titles, even still being played thru channels, it dosnt have that sonic kind of style which is what makes it so good the song feels so surreal and out of place for a sonic game

@@DMARrecords Actually, I think that was a issue of the driver, because I made a few tunes using that chip and had the same issue (but the samples were normal).
For those who don't know and are confused - Sega CD is combination between Sega Megadrive/Genesis Yamaha sound chip + full quality CD MP3 player. Nothing like SNES. SNES is identical to MIDI, sample-based. Only thing- Sega Megadrive/genesis has two channels that allow use of samples. Sonic CD all PAST levels have music tracks on Megadrive Yamaha sound chip + using two sample chanels. The rest Sonic CD levels Present and BAD/GOOD future - full CD MP3 tracks. That's why you can have Oscilloscope Deconstruction only for "THE PAST" tracks, but not for Present and Future (Good/Bad) tracks - since those are MP3 stereo.
And I will also clear your confusion. The Sonic CD Past tracks aren't made using the Megadrive's Yamaha Soundchip but rather the Sega CD's Ricoh RF5C164 sound chip, which had 8 sample-based channels much like the Snes, but the main difference between it was that there was no filter on the sounds meaning they sounded much scratchier and generally compressed but did have higher frequences and were also less compressed than SNES samples. All the other Sonic CD tracks also play via Redbook Audio and not an MP3 player, which would be the equivalent to WAV files.
Question? Why does the music not include channel 6? Is it reserved for sound effects to make sure that single track SFX don't cut out a channel (like the normal genesis)?
My first play of the song was the version included in the Sonic Gems Collection, and I was surprised when I learned that it was played on the Sega CD's built-in synthesizer. The quality is not inferior at all when compared to the other songs on the CD.
Fun Fact: The SEGA-CD sound chip works exactly as the sound chip used in the SNES, so it plays instruments based in samples (soundfonts). This is why it sounds like a Yoshi's Island music, because it uses some of the same instruments.
