- The world of performance cars has entered a new era. After years of teasing the possibility, the elusive sub-two-second zero-to-sixty miles per hour time has finally been achieved. Porsche’s latest creation, the Taycan Turbo GT, has shattered expectations by reaching this milestone with a stunning 1.9-second sprint, powered by its incredible 1,092 horsepower.
This achievement builds on decades of incremental progress. Back in 2008, the Bugatti Veyron, with its four turbochargers and 1,001 horsepower, reached sixty miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. It was an impressive feat at the time, but the performance car world was just getting started. Porsche’s 918 Spyder, launched in 2015, cut that time to 2.1 seconds, sparking conversations about whether a sub-two-second run was on the horizon.
Since then, advancements in technology and electrification have brought cars closer to this milestone. The Ferrari SF90 plug-in hybrid, with 986 horsepower, clocked in at exactly two seconds. Meanwhile, electric sedans like the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire demonstrated how electrification could rival traditional hypercars, both posting times of 2.1 seconds.
Porsche’s Taycan Turbo GT finally broke through, but it is worth noting the conditions under which this record was set. The test, conducted by *Car and Driver*, involved a four-seat version of the Taycan Turbo GT, weighing in at 5,203 pounds. Unlike lightweight, stripped-down versions such as the Weissach package variant that saves 165 pounds, this car was fully equipped and ran on Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires.
During initial runs, the car’s launch control system, engaged by selecting Sport Plus mode, turning off stability control, and holding down both pedals, experienced slight traction issues. These early attempts revealed minor scrabbling of the tires as they searched for grip. However, once the tires were properly heated, the Taycan Turbo GT delivered consistently jaw-dropping performance.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the test was performed on a standard concrete surface, not a specially prepared drag strip. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the Taycan Turbo GT demonstrated exceptional capability, with an average zero-to-sixty miles per hour time calculated from two runs: 1.898 seconds in one direction and 1.910 seconds in the other.
The Taycan’s dominance, however, is most noticeable in the zero-to-sixty sprint. As speeds climb, its competitors begin to close the gap. The Taycan Turbo GT completed the quarter mile in 9.3 seconds at 150 miles per hour, tying with the 1,234-horsepower Lucid Air Sapphire and edging out the 1,020-horsepower Tesla Model S Plaid by one-tenth of a second. At higher speeds, the Taycan begins to fall behind due to its lower horsepower and fewer electric motors compared to the Sapphire. The Lucid Air Sapphire overtakes the Taycan by 0.7 seconds to 160 miles per hour and extends its lead to 1.1 seconds at 170 miles per hour.
Where the Taycan Turbo GT truly shines is in its braking and handling. The car achieved the shortest stopping distances among its competitors, halting from seventy miles per hour in 141 feet and from one hundred miles per hour in 274 feet. Its cornering capabilities are equally impressive, with an average lateral acceleration of 1.08 g on the skidpad, outperforming the Lucid Air Sapphire and matching the Tesla Model S Plaid.
This test underscores the Taycan Turbo GT’s unique balance of speed, precision, and usability. While it may trail slightly at extreme speeds compared to its rivals, it sets a new standard in acceleration, handling, and overall performance.
A general rule of thumb in the automotive world is that a reduction of one hundred pounds in curb weight can trim one-tenth of a second off a car’s zero-to-sixty miles per hour time. With that in mind, a lighter version of the Taycan Turbo GT, such as one equipped with the Weissach package, might achieve an even more astonishing time of 1.8 seconds.
This historic achievement by the Taycan Turbo GT, verified through Car and Driver’s rigorous testing, cements Porsche’s position as a leader in innovation and performance. As technology continues to evolve, it is exciting to imagine what the future holds for the world of high-performance vehicles.

Edmunds U-Drags race between Taycan Turbo GT and Sapphire proved EMPHATICALLY that the Lucid is MUCH quicker than the Porsche. NIce video though.
False! Tesla plaid S clocked 1.9 0-60. Rimac Nevera posted 1.7 0-60. You have no idea what you’re talking about
When my e tron GT lease is up, I’m getting a Taycan. These vehicles are so much fun; like driving Andretti go-carts in a street legal manner!
Porsche....best car manufacturer by far.
…may be for some of the legacy cars. But not for the 2.5 tons EV monsters…
@@schrimpfYou will see. Give it a little time. Overall performance though, there is no competition.
Amazing what you can accomplish by adding a turbo to an EV. Beats the crap out of those naturally aspirated EVs. Maybe they can add another electric motor to act as a torque gap filler to mask the turbo lag...
please tell me you're being sarcastic :')
😂😂😂
Wait until they bolt a supercharger onto one. Zero lag and instant torque!! And the next step will be a version of fuel injection called... electric injection!
Whats Really needed is a Flux Capacitor😶
Just listen to that turbo spool 🤤
It's called a turbo but there's no actual turbo lol
here i am having my first car that goes 0-100kph in under 10 seconds (9.7 seconds) thinking it is quick
You think that 0-60 is fast?
Just watch this car's depreciation over a year.
The depreciation of this car is „turbo fast“…..😮
The people that buy these type of cars are probably not worried about depreciation, most of them are multi millionaires.
@ obviously not all of them. Look at the sharply shrinking sales figures…
People that can comfortably afford cars like this one, care little to nothing about depreciation.
No better value than a second hand German car at 2-3 years of age.
Turbo? That has to be one of the dumbest things that anyone ever could have labeled an EV.
You forgot BMW calls their 4 door car a grand coupe. When you have no shame, you have no limit I guess
I legit forgot the Taycan was fully EV and clicked on this thinking it was a hybrid lol (and I know a lot more about cars than most people). From a marketing standpoint, I think it makes sense to call it a turbo. Most people have no idea what that means, they just think it means FAST. I've known people who get so excited when they see the word turbo attached to a vehicle's name, like they genuinely think their 2.0L turbocharged Mini Cooper is going to win them the Le Mans some day lol.
"Turbo" is a symbolic heritage name at Porsche, used for their highest performance flagship models. Just like Volkswagen, using "GTI" (grand tourer injection) for their high performance Golfs, which is clearly not a "grand tourer" car also all Golf engines are using fuel injection..
@@D0MIIN8T0R No, 'turbo' meant that the car had a turbocharger, but electric cars don't have turbochargers. They could have called the more powerful version of the car any number of different names, that they chose "Turbo" is just ridiculous.
@@PistonAvatarGuy "meant" exactly, just like I said with the GTI, now it has a different meaning. is it that hard to understand??
Still don't want one.
sure. Don't want = can't afford. Peace.
Don't buy it then, no one forcing you 😂

In all? I think u mean in one. Also that wasn't the weisach pack edition.
Sad about the looks
What kind of bullshit was that opening! Rimac nevera already does 1.8

It is much heavier than a Tesla. Sporty…?
Now give us that performance under $30k, that’ll be impressive
At what point will idiots stop measuring 0 - 60 time?
Unless you drag race it’s meaningless for last 30 years once it was sub 5 sec
its funny how as soon as antiquated combustion powered vehicles got dropped by the EV hard...suddenly 0-60 isnt important anymore lol 😂
0 to 60 is literally the only performance metric that we can legally use in this boring world.
it can do that only for 1 year. then its gonna die in 4.
Love porsche but never want an electric sports car no fun have a turbo s super fast and love the down shifts and the handling electric feels dead that's just my opinion
Good to see Porsche not getting dropped in EV tech. The 911 is still pretty antiquated....its only a matter of time
Whats insane is that porsche only needed 2 motors to outperform its competition and this isnt even the weisach pack model !
Noise isn't everything
A real 1.9 second 0-60. Tesla still has to fake numbers for promotion as usual.
The point is that: what is the utility to reach 60 mph in under 2 seconds.... Maybe 2 or 3 times before battery starts to downgrade, but have less top speed, less cornering, big weight, no sound (and so, no soul)?.... Before Bev cars, in Europe no-one considered 1/4 mile et time something important to evaluate a supercar; now it seems the most important performance requirement. Remember that when ICE engine reaches the right torque speed grow up same as Bev ( see koenigsegg Vs rinac). Only propaganda to show superiority of bev car, enhancing the only aspect where the can beat a ice car.
Well it’s top speed is stil above 300kmh and is completely useless, it can’t be used anywhere except the autobahn. It still corners faster then 99% of all cars. I don’t know about you but I always evaluated sport cars for their acceleration. It’s not propaganda if it’s better on a 100 points and looses only on 3. It’s faster out of corners, it has way better tractions, you can actually beat the shit out of them without blowing a motor or gearbox. It’s cheap to run, gas is 2,20 per liter here. It has a full tank every single morning, you don’t have pussy it until the engine is warm , or wait after to cool the turbo.
@reapzvanreapz9687 even 0-100 in 1.9 is useless... Useless as a supercar with 400 kph top speed. Only engineering demostrator. But comparing apple to apple... I only say that a 650hp production Porsche gt2 is faster than a 1500hp prototype Xiaomi in nurburgring. And with a battery car you can make no more than one lap before battery start to down the performances.
Well exactly. That's why porsche opted for 2 motors and not 3. The taycan turbo gt isn't just a straight line boring EV. It also handles and breaks like a porsche. It did 7:07 around the ring which is only 2 sec slower then the 1900hp rimac nevera 2 door.
Nobody buys this car. As a used car impossible to find a buyer.
This is not the kind of car people buy used because of the EV aspect. EVs are too costly to repair to them buy them used.
I thought the Plaid did 1.99 way before everyone else???
No that was with rollout which is what American companies do to make their cars seem better. Without rollout it does 2.3 sec.
What about the Rimac?
Its electric so does not mean anything in the world of cars. Real cars have engines and can race all day long, these cannot. They are limited pieces of old electronic motor tech. Nothing new here, just a gimmick.
Ugly gets uglier at Porsche. The squat frog design doesn't cut it, unless you're part reptile.
And if you wait a year, you could probably get one for half off 😂
Top Dog
Rimac Nevera 0-60 = 1.74 seconds
Give Porsche a little time. They will soon past that too. There is no equal to Porsche. Just challengers.
It's cool and all, but I'll pass.
Why is 0-60 such a big deal anyway or near 200 MPH top speed?
I'm sure there's probably some antiquated reasons for its actual origins. But I think a big part of why it's still such a big deal is because in the states, 60 MPH is a nice round number that's fairly close to the speed limit on the highway. It's a number that anyone who's been in a car can wrap their head around. To me, it basically showcases "this is how long it takes to get my car from a complete standstill to a speed where I'm flowing with traffic." You don't wanna merging on the freeway in a car that takes 15 seconds to get up to speed.
err RIMAC anyone !!!
Lucid Air Sapphire has done 1.7 🤷🏾 This is still a nice car though.
proof plz?
Never understood why an electric car should be badged "Turbo".... 😳
For the same reason vacuums have Turbo in the name
