Navarre Marshall You speak the truth my friend. As a Jew I’ve often been told that I was born into privilege. What privilege? My father was a postal worker and my mother was a low-level hospital administrator. Dad had a massive heart attack in 1971 requiring a pacemaker to be implanted. He was forced to retire early and accept a half pension. From there we were on public assistance and food stamps. Most of my working life was spent as an auto mechanic (after trade school) and then as a blue-collar worker on a heavy truck assembly line. I worked a lot of overtime and sometimes a second job to benefit my family. Yet I was chided by coworkers saying “He’s a Jew! They always do better!“

I have black blood somewhere in my background, along with indigenous blood. I say this to let you know that although I have extensive European blood, I look like a brown man.
I've been reading Thomas Sowell since I was in high school in the 1970's. I've been a "conservative" since I could vote. Because of influences like Sowell, I have a 30-year, six-figure, career and a forward-looking attitude about life. I never looked at any of the racist moments I've faced as a hurdle. I looked at them as fuel for my ambition.
I work in a position that is far above any white person I work with. This exists because I never relied on anyone to "give me a chance". I took what I wanted and dominated the effort. People of color need to stop begging for scraps and feed their souls on their own.

@@c.marquez8821- Socialism is a universal ideology. Growing up in Mexico and going to school in the 70s/80s, most of my teachers talked to us about the "evils" of capitalism and the private sector. Yes, Mexico is not a socialist country, but since the 30s it's had governments that lean left.

Tony Brown is being a real journalist. I would not expect a modern host on most TV stations would treat Dr. Sowell with this kind of fairness.
Tony Brown asked questions and allowed Sowell to answer them. He had no comment either way. From this interview I have no idea what Tony Brown thought on the subjects presented, if he agreed or disagreed, or even if he liked or disliked Sowell. Exactly how an interview should be conducted.

Thomas Sowell is a mixed bag. On the one hand he gives valuable insights that are critical to understanding the realities of economics, race, and culture, but on the other hand he consistently makes blatantly biased (often unsound) arguments in favor of certain ideas in order to please those who hold certain political views.
They want us to read “White Fragility” but don’t want us to read “Discrimination and Disparities.” Unfortunately I guess that should tell us everything we need to know...

Sowell is the man! I find it funny that many public individuals like Jordan Peterson, Pinker, Haidt, and similar figures, are lauded for being brave and insightful for making powerful points about disparities, race, and inequality, and here we have Sowell, who said the same things decades ago! America would be much better off if his books were in the public school curriculum.
Where do you think they got their educated? Every generations need a Tom Sowell, today we have one in the face of Jordon Peterson for white people.

When I was much younger I wanted to learn about racial issues and disparities between blacks and whites just to educate myself and be a better human being. I found Thomas Sowell and Walter William's and I never turned back!!! In my 40's now and with everything going on in the world as of now I'm just like you need some Thomas Sowell in your dome lol...such an unbelievable brilliant mind and I'm a such a better man and human being for it because of the knowledge Thomas Sowell presented to me ✌

8:00, Sowell mentioned my tribe.. Amazing this interview was just less than 20 years after a bloody Civil War claimed millions of lives after a targeted pogrom that killed the thousands he mentioned. As part of the reconciliation program, all igbo men received 20 pounds, forfeited their properties and money, yet in less than 20 years became arguably the richest tribe again in post civil war Nigeria.
I tried to explain this to an African American who was gloating over the so-called Repatriation promised by Democrats and I was shut down.

At 13:08 Sowell concedes that the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s as something largely good that was achieved through politics, while maintaining that most of the time, avoidance of politics and instead working hard and saving money is what has been the primary factor for success. But many of the corrections that the Civil Rights Movement sought were reversals of rules, laws and discriminations that were *brought on by the use of politics in the first place.* So it's important to recognize that politics almost never solves problems brought on by free choice and markets; but when it *does* appear to solve problems, it is almost always "solving" problems that were created by politics in the first place.
Yes! And something I want to add is a quote from The Quest for Cosmic Justice:
"In politics, the great non-sequitur of our time is that 1) things are not right and that 2) the government should make them right".
So I think one of the consequences of this mindset, assuming the truth of his quote, is that whenever something is actually made right in society people will credit the government. This is true even when government is the main cause of the problem, and reducing government power is what solved it. Somehow government still gets credit. I mean Jim Crow, the Great Depression, or even the 2015 oil industry bust all snowballed directly from piecemeal government action, yet government is credited with these things being "made right"
Indeed the civil Rights movement was necessary to allow the free market to happen. Man economic regulations especially those brought about in the first half of the 20th century had racist overtones to keep minorities in poverty.
He subsequently pointed out that groups suppressed by politics were still able to succeed when they started businesses and hired each other. Not even politics can keep people down if they choose to rise up. Welfare is a problem caused by politics. Democrats today are promising everyone free stuff. Good luck getting rid of this problem with politics.

Even when marginalized and ostracized one can still find prosperity if they are left to only politic with themselves.The Mormons are another example of a group that was shunned by society as a whole and pushed out to the deserts of Utah where there was nothing, and they made it a thriving community. What is extraordinary about Dr. Thomas Sowell is he uses evidence to formulate is opinions, not emotion or tradition which has become the hallmark of most black political thought.
The disparity between racial groups is "because the incentives created by affirmative action and similar types of programs had made it too dangerous to take a chance."
For those who want affirmative action today this has already been the tested outcome.
Btw, what many black people don't know is when blacks were shut out of certain industries and whites wouldn't hire them it was Jews who would train and mentor some blacks to acquire the necessary training and/or experience in order to get the job or take the test to get the job.
Those same incentives are present among all races yet we see disparate outcomes still. That's because we evolved over tens of thousands of years to have differing abilities and traits. Sowell will never be honest about the genetic causes of differences because of his own identity.

Sowell is one of the all time great social economic thinkers in history.
@spot light he never rose higher because he stuck to his principles and DID NOT SELL OUT to the progressive elites in power positions within the university ranks. They are a bunch of pansies who sold out to the whole bullshit theory of "white privilege" that is required to be included among the elite. It's that crap that's tearing at our country's fabric. Black people are given more advantage than whites, so are foreign exchange students and all women, especially of color. Look around, their are approximately 4 whites to every one black person yet there is not a lack of black success stories. The biggest problem in every community is the loss of men raising children with the mothers. The second the extremely high drop out rate from high school, which most attribute to the number one problem and the third problem is unplanned sex leading to parenthood before being maturely employed. If a young person of any race wants to avoid poverty the fathers need to step up, the kid needs to excel or at least complete high school and avoid parenthood until financially stable. Simple as that. Racism is practically dead in America. I'm nearly 60 years old, I've seen the change.
Some people continue using the race card because it's their last weak attempt at controlling the narrative- the one where white people hold minorities back through "systemic oppression". Excuses are easier than efforts, the path to least resistance.
Sometimes people try to tell me I'm oppressed because I'm Latino, I tell them to fuck off.

I love the fact Dr. Sowell says in 12:12 that no group rises to affluence via politics. He goes on the say "work, skills and saving" result in affluence.
Thomas Sowell is one of the greatest American thinkers of our lifetime. He is an American treasure and his works should be approved for teaching methods across the American curriculum.

Dr. Sowell had the issues of black advancement nailed almost 35 years ago. No matter how many blacks have political power, it will have very little ability to advance the economic futures of the mass of black, although it will massively advance the welfare of blacks that are in power.
As an example, the Detroit public schools are run almost exclusively by blacks and the teachers are almost exclusively black, yet it's only those two groups that economically advanced. Teachers and administrators are paid some of the highest salaries in the nation while the schools are failing and falling further behind each year. Only about 40% of blacks graduate high school, and about 50% of the black population is functionally illiterate. Those are the structural problems that need to be solved, not the constant drumbeat that racism is to blame for everything. Unless black school administrators and teachers are racist against other black, there have to be other answers.
Black teachers and administrators are racist against other blacks blaming them for this ignorance when they are paid to teach them.
Nor is it unique to blacks. Look at the Irish in the mid 19th century in the US. They were stuck in poverty while some Irish leaders gained great wealth and power by exploiting their own people.

@spot light hiring people based on a demographic instead of ability is not a recipe for a successful business. Just because one is a minority does not mean one deserves a job, nor does it mean oppression when one is not hired.
The results of lawsuits are not concrete facts, especially where the laws are corrupt, the courts are corrupt, the entire legal system is based on who has more money. Our legal system is pay to play.
Stop being racist and look at facts, you are smarter than that.
The Biggest factor: Having BOTH caring parents present in the home. It's that simple. Love makes families successful. Race is irrelevant against this strength. That's why mixed families are doing great. (This view is from the supra-macro perspective)

A few hours ago I was perusing the Black Lives Matter website and found a statement claiming that BLM is fighting to deconstruct the Western family structure and replacing it with a communal/tribal/village aspect to family and child rearing. An interesting idea, no doubt. I wonder what comments Sowell would have on that idea.

Sowell is a remarkable fellow.
He was born into North Carolina Black poverty in 1930 and so turns 90 this year. His family moved to New York City around 1940. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army, rising to the rank of seargent and seeing action during the Korean War. He then attended Harvard and majored in economics. He later claimed that he was a Marxist during his Harvard years. At Harvard, he had a very bad economics lecturer, who made a lot more sense during his office hours. This lecturer advised Sowell to do his PhD at the University of Chicago. He put that advice into effect, finishing his PhD in 1968; George Stigler was his supervisor. A big hobby of Stigler's was the history of economic thought, and Sowell is his most distinguished student in that area. Sowell taught at UCLA for some years; my mentor Roger Kormendi took his hard course in the history of economic thought. For the past 45 years or so, Sowell has been at the Hoover Institution on Stanford's campus. He has written many books (I own a few of them), and is perhaps THE authority on the common sense economics of racial divisions. Sowell is probably the founder of respectable African American conservative social science. Walter Williams was one of his UCLA students. Shelby Steele surely has read Sowell. The right wing black UA-camr Candace Owens acknowledges Sowell, Williams and Steele as important influences. Sowell may have influenced Glenn Loury. UA-cam reveals that there are pro-Trump blacks. In my Chicago days and elsewhere, I have met very traditionalist blacks, who are full of disdain for the high rates of crime, drug use, single motherhood and carefree sex among African Americans.

I always love when he presents on the subject especially talking about the difference between political power and economic power. You can look at two different white ethnic groups who migrated to the US. Take the Irish and Germans. The Irish achieved massive political power however their economic rise was slow.
