    That quote from Sowell's book near the end of the video - talking about the intelligentsia making "excuses for moral squalor and barbaric behavior" applies even more today than even in the 1960s. Now, you have an "intelligentsia" that has institutionalized, promoted, and protected "moral squalor and barbaric behavior" among black americans nowadays. I'm younger than Sowell, having grown up in the 60s/70s, but that "moral squalor" among black americans still was not so common at all. But today that squalor and barbarism is ubiquitous and now spills out into the mainstream of american social life, creating dangers that no civilized society should endure. The middle class democrat blacks and their white liberal fellow travelers provide nutrient for this aberrant behavior by defending and protecting it supposedly in the name of fighting racism. But they in fact make it impossible even to reach, much less teach and put on a straighter life path the young men and women most directly impacted by this moral squalor and barbarism. This is tragic and shameful.

      To me the whole idea of intelligence as measured by standardized tests needs to be re-examined. The sense is, some have argued, that overall intelligence involves far more than what is measured by standardized IQ tests. I don't think it can be denied that the tests can be usual...but only in a very limited way. After what I've seen of people over the past 2.5 years, particularly of people I once esteemed for their intellect, the whole idea of "intelligence" must be thoroughly reexamined. I watched smart and accomplished people accept all the crap coming out of the msm about the scam pandemic, BLM and George Floyd and Antifa, the white supremacy threat, the "safe and effective" vaccines for covid, and so on...simply swallowing whole, without the slightest question all the contradictory and inconsistent nonsense that was being pushed on them and everybody else. And even worse, I watched those same people even take up Biden's call to turn on and ostracize their own family members if they were unvaxxed...again without pausing to consider what was actually being promoted...which was the destruction of the family! Anyone who took the time to pause and examine the obvious lies, disinformation, and misinformation coming out of the msm (and still coming out) could immediately see that what the TV or the NYT were pushing was absolute propaganda garbage. By acting this way, these supposedly intelligent people are actually promoting their own demise and that of their offspring...as we're seeing everyday now. So yes, it's time to reassess the idea of "intelligence."

    I totally agree with Dr. Sowell that IQ tests can be very biased towards certain cultures. Questions coming from an unknown culture can skew things.
    I remembered living in KwaZulu, right in the tropics. An example about the effect of surface size in heat transfer was, "Why do you break ice in small pieces in order to cool your drink?" This was asked of students who have never seen ice or owned a freezer. The boy that I helped did not have a clue what was asked. -- Until I asked why he used small branches for kindling to start a fire. Immediately his face lit up and he gave the correct answer!
    The wording of a question makes a world of difference!

    As part of my firearms business I administer the test that must be passed before receiving a California Firearms Safety Certificate. Around 80% of the people who were born in Mexico fail the test on the first try. However, 95% of Hispanics who were born in the US pass the test on their first try. Both groups have the same racial makeup, but one group vastly out performs the other on this test. Why? Are Hispanics born north of the Rio Grand somehow smarted than their cousins born south of that river? Somehow I doubt it. I believe the reason could be that in Mexico legally owning a firearm is much harder than it is in the US, so most young people in Mexico have not been exposed as much to firearms, (and firearms safety). But, because a large percentage of the US population owns some type of firearm, most young Hispanics born in America were taught by dad, or uncle Joe, about the basics of gun safety at a young age.

By the way, of the 30 questions on the test, only 2 pertain to State law, (the other 28 questions are on gun SAFETY, NOT the law), and you can miss 7 questions and still pass. IQ between groups of people, separated by 1000s of miles, evolving for 1000s of years, in radically different environments, being exactly equal is an impossible and naive belief.

    • @alanlight7740
      @alanlight7740 2 роки тому +3

      Agreed. Although Dr Sowell makes good points about the way that culture can affect IQ, I think he dismisses the genetic side of things a little too quickly.
      His points about how various groups used to have the highest level of civilization only to be supplanted by others are worth noting, but I think he too quickly discards any genetic component because he - like the vast majority of people - does not give natural selection enough credit for acting rapidly. In fact, we have fairly solid evidence for very rapid evolution among humans in the last 10,000 years, and really advantageous genes can sweep through populations in just two or three centuries to become almost ubiquitous where they were formerly absent.
      When you combine this swift shift in genes with cultural innovations you will sometimes get very big changes in a short time. As just one example, circa 1500 my Scottish ancestors were widely (and probably correctly) considered half-savage, and by the late 1700s the Scottish enlightenment and Scottish engineering had changed the world for the better in rather big ways, both in politics and in material culture. Although seldom so quick and dramatic, similar shifts appear to have happened in multiple populations and there is no reason to believe that it won't happen again.
      My chief objection to progressive views on race is that they completely misunderstood the mechanisms by which intelligence and other useful traits were selected for, and many of their interventions - especially the interventions made in the 1960s - made things worse. Especially the welfare state - which takes from those who are productive and by depriving them of their wealth makes it more difficult for them to raise children, while giving to those who are non-productive thereby making it easier for them to have more children - is essentially a subsidy of negative traits accompanied by punishment of positive traits - and in just a few generations can wreak havoc on a civilization.
      By contrast, good incentives can improve a civilization considerably within a few centuries - though it may be that positive change takes a bit longer than negative change. The other great thing about a system of good incentives is that they work fairly well regardless of what the original stock is. Convergent evolution among multiple species has demonstrated to us that similar incentives tend to produce similar results regardless of original stock - which should be regarded as good news for anyone embracing true meritocracy. In this sense Dr Sowell is correct to emphasize culture, as the culture itself can improve the genetics - or make them worse. But no doubt that genetics do play an important role as well.

But if you measure the IQ of red bearded men in Ireland vs red bearded men in America you will find variability even in the same race. Is it significant? I don't think so. The human Genome unites us. Culture separates us. We are mostly equal at birth but society's norms (family, educators, business practices, etc.) will try to limit the development of each child. IOW Science is the open road approach, held back by humans who need to think they are in control. Hint: the most powerful society will be the one that best preserves human autonomy as part of the quest to extract the best from each individual. This requires _Distributed Systems_ and that means philosophically accurate _Democracy, Capitalism and Science:_ the three pillars of human excellence.

      I'm not familiar with him, but I do think Dr Sowell is a little too quick to dismiss the effect of genetics on IQ. On the other hand, I think most people are a bit too quick to dismiss the effect of culture on genetics. Good incentives matter, and the welfare state is about as bad as incentives get, as it forces the productive to subsidize the unproductive, allowing the unproductive to have more children while forcing the productive to reduce the number of children they can have. I have worked on many jobs where the best men all had one or two children at most because that was all they could afford, while some of the most useless helpers had eight or more children by several different women with the help of government assistance - paid for by the most productive members of society.
      One interesting point is that examples abound of convergent evolution, where similar environments have produced similar results even when starting with different stocks. History suggests that many populations could improve quite rapidly - at least, within two or three centuries - if they can maintain good incentives for that long.

If a member of this tenable group then clears the hurdle of ignorance and denounces the victim mentality they are considered to stupid because of race?
    Progress is extremely subjective, like success and happiness. Each is defined by the individual and vary widely. Each therfore is a feeling. Feelings are real, but they are not facts. Each of these feelings are important to One's own idea of self worth and production in society. I guess anyone could be a progressive they just gobbled up the name before someone else did... obviously the progress they bring is not in balance with the foundations of US political theory.
