  • You may have heard the word Minnesota in the news more in the past couple years than in your entire life prior - mainly related to crime and safety. If you had been thinking about making a move to Minnesota perhaps it’s got you second guessing that choice, or if you already live here perhaps you’re considering a move OUT.

    I lived in rural MN for 25 years without being a victim of crime. I moved to the twin cities and after only 4 months my car was stolen. I hear police and ambulance sirens constantly. There is litter everywhere. The twin cities are ugly and riddled with trash and poor roads.

    I lived many places. I've lived and worked in the twin cities for almost a decade. Lived in the worst and the best areas. Avoid the twin cities.

      Hey Rayden! Totally valid. I can't speak to the differences in crime statistics internationally. I would suggest comparing crime statistics between the different major metropolitans in the US. You can also compare the differences between downtown areas versus the suburbs and smaller communities, which may help you find a suitable place to live. Often what you'll find online is people telling of the horror stories, which can make people think it may be worse than it actually is - for ANY area.

    My sister and her husband were robbed at gunpoint on the Northstar (train) a few years ago. Since last years riots I've totally avoided anything to do with Minneapolis (especially north Minneapolis). I even recanted my admission to the U of M to go out of state for college it feels so dangerous (even after growing up in Elk River and wanting to go to the U since I was in middle school).

      The University of Minnesota is a very terrible school for the tuition, high crime, and rude/stuck up people. I have never attended the school but speaking from my dad who worked there as a bus driver in the 1990s and a friend who was robbed of his $700 phone at gunpoint way before the burning lootings murders. Things are now many times worse. Glad I am attending a school in a good area with no political agenda either.

      That explains why no one wants to buy a house in North of Minneapolis. Despite the slow market, no one is buying those homes!

    NOTE: But Remember you have to take into account more than Just stats: It's Actually (1) the Livability of the City (How well it's kept). And (2) Peoples Perception of Safety! For If people don't "Perceive" they're Safe? Then they Won't Believe they're Safe. Even if the numbers say so. Right?

    • @LivinginMinnesota

      I agree with a lot of what you say, and appreciate the comment. I would add that it's really important people try to keep themselves grounded and making decisions with facts and not just feelings. Not that our feelings don't matter or shouldn't be taken into consideration, but it seems like SO many people make decisions that hurt them because it was an incorrect perception based on inaccurate information. All about balance, right!

    • @cobbetlprogrammer1344
      @cobbetlprogrammer1344 Рік тому

      @@LivinginMinnesota Yes..Indeed. And your stats are accurate! My point is "there is a perception element" to the decision as well. For example; let's say you compare Texas to NY, or California. And let's say "IF the numbers show more Gun-Deaths are in Texas? However Texas has major State Laws supporting Constitutional Carry & Stand Your Ground Rights. So looking closer at the Gun-Death numbers -they include many more "Bad Guys" who were justifiably whacked by Good Citizen. So if only in Perception? Texas allows a citizen more ability for 'Self Defense' than in NY or California. So if Minneapolis crime numbers mean I can protect me self adequately compared to other places in general, then that's a good thing? Would you agree?

    Stats are a pretty static way of presenting reality. I grew up near Minneapolis in the 1980s and 1990s and moved to rural MN after college in the mid 2000s and have have never looked back. For a brief 7 month period my wife and I moved to the cities in 2006 where I had a sales and delivery position in the company I was working for at the time. My route was South Minneapolis, primarily the Lake Street neighborhoods. During those 7 months I encountered violence, victims of violence (including a store clerk who was recovering from being shot), threats, racism, public drunkenness during daytime hours, theft, vandalism and every other inner city stereotype you can imagine. I went into work everyday in such a state of depression where for the sake of my mental health I couldn't even look in the direction of the Minneapolis skyline when I wasn't working. I can't even imagine what Minneapolis is like 20 years later! I currently own land about an hour away from the metro area and couldn't be happier commuting to work passing through the rolling countryside filled with corn fields and hay bales. I seldom venture into the cities and completely avoid Minneapolis and St. Paul. I'm a born and raised Minnesotan and can't imagine living in any other state, but I'll never move back to the metro.

    I carry and do not feel safe at all when I walking in downtown or uptown in Minneapolis! I usually try to find one or two people who is also packing to come with me! Open displays of guns by thugs, especially at nighttime! 😵‍💫 Cops just stand around inside their SUVs. It seems they have orders not to interfere!

  • @chuckfinley4757
    @chuckfinley4757 3 роки тому +7

    How about you change your video to just report on the metro area versus all of Minnesota? The reason Minnesota looks safe is because of the 99% of it that isn't Minneapolis or St Paul.

    • @LivinginMinnesota
      @LivinginMinnesota  2 роки тому +1

      I serve a pretty large area, not just the immediate metro. Besides, if you look too narrowly at something you'll only see what you were looking to find, and can lose sight of the bigger picture overall.
